Contributors AUTUMN 2020 Avril Groom “Writing in a lockdown has emphasised how different one’s imagination can be from reality. Still-life pictures don’t always explain scale,” says Centurion’s contributing fashion editor on researching table clocks for Watching Time (p30) “It was only on Zoom, with experts showing me certain pieces, that I discovered just how large the Jaeger- LeCoultre Atmos is and how tiny many of the early Cartier guirlande clocks are – scarcely bigger than travel clocks and more like jewellery.” Claire Wrathall “It’s not surprising that people are favouring villas over hotels this year, nor that hotels are increasingly turning to villa rentals, whether it’s to boost their inventory or take on Airbnb,” says the London-based travel writer, who reports on some of the world’s most inspiring private escapes for In Search of Solitude (p74). “Either way, there’s nothing like a villa that’s been specced by the owner of a fabled hotel for their own use.” Wrathall is a frequent contributor to the Financial Times. ILLUSTRATIONS PAUL RYDING Lanie Goodman Born and raised in New York, the writer of Monaco’s Glittery New Allure (p20) is an arts and travel writer based in the South of France. “Breakfast at Mada One, with a view of the newly revamped beige-on-beige Casino Square, was not only a prime people-watching spot but its scrumptious munegu – a traditional Monegasque brioche-like lemony cake filled with raspberry jam – was a real stunner.” Goodman regularly pens stories for Condé Nast Traveller, Forbes and Wallpaper*. Lisa Grainger “I don’t think there is anywhere as beautiful as Scotland in the UK – precisely because it’s so wild, so bleak, and roofed with such enormous skies,” says the author of The Rewilding of Scotland (p15), who also writes for Travel + Leisure and Condé Nast Traveller. “What I found so unexpected is that the enormous heather moors and the barren hills are man-made – because we cut down all of the forests over centuries. It feels only right that there is now a movement to return the land to its natural habitat. It’s inspiring that philanthropists are turning their fortunes over to restore ancient parts of our world.” Corrina da Fonseca-Wollheim A music critic for the Wall Street Journal and The New York Times, the Breaking the Sound Barrier (p34) author has written about avantgarde work such as chamber music made from recorded vacuum-cleaner gurgles. But even she was amazed by the inventiveness of Esa-Pekka Salonen, the Finnish principal conductor of the Philharmonia Orchestra of London. “Technology allows composers to send sounds whizzing about an auditorium,” da Fonseca-Wollheim says. And in the world of classical music, “Salonen may be the most tech-friendly conductor there is”.
