ART & DESIGN CLASSICS

ART & DESIGN CLASSICS REINVENTED founded the Josef Rainer Shakermanufaktur with gold- and silversmith Klaus Lohmeyer (jr-shaker.com). Since 2009, he’s been creating bar accessories that are treasures in the truest sense of the word. “I got the idea as I was translating Jerry Thomas’s Bar-Tender’s Guide,” says Rainer. “Thomas is considered the forefather of cocktail culture. A gold digger, entertainer and barkeeper in 19th-century America, he apparently had his own bar tools made of gold and silver.” It took two years until Rainer was satisfied with the quality of his first gem, a Boston shaker made of sturdy sterling silver. “A piece like this should last a lifetime and must remain absolutely solid even after the thousandth use,” he explains, then quips: “Before we found the optimal shape, we produced many expensive flower vases.” Today, you can buy his Meisterstück shakers in various styles rendered in gold and silver – though the latter is also coated with the former on the inside to ensure hygiene and taste neutrality. No less artful is Rainer’s 44cm-long bar spoon, created from a single piece of metal, as well as the new JR Cup – also made of sterling silver and ideal for cocktail staples like mint juleps. Martin Gräbeldinger and Jonas Dieterle are similarly keen to encourage the creation of well-mixed cocktail classics with their company Siphon Manufaktur, founded in 2011 (siphonmanufaktur.de). These tools for carbonating water were omnipresent in the 1920s and 1930s, even Clockwise from top left: a silver Meisterstück JR Cup; detail of a Meisterstück Gold Shaker, with JR hallmark; the titular adornments of the Meisterstück JR Skull; a restored Berlin soda siphon from Siphon Manufaktur; previous page: Klaus St Rainer in the Golden Bar at Munich’s Haus der Kunst PHOTOS FROM TOP: KATJA HIENDLMAYER (3), © DIE SIPHON MANUFAKTUR 64 CENTURION-MAGAZINE.COM
