KCMA’s new ESP 04-11 criteria became effective January 1, 2011. More than 140 companies/brands are ESP certified. Changes include: • The use of CARB ATCM compliant low formaldehyde emitting particleboard, Hardwood plywood and MDF panel products is mandatory. In order to qualify all products must be certified by CARB approved third-party certifiers (TPC’s). • Companies, which offer chain-of-custody sustainable forestry certification on at least one line of cabinetry, can earn additional points. • Encourages use of solid wood and plywood products certified through a recognized sustainable forestry program by doubling the possible points. • Companies who offer chain-of-custody sustainable forestry certification on at least one line of cabinetry earn additional points. The ESP awards points in five categories: air quality, product resource management, process resource management, environmental stewardship and community relations. Dick Titus, executive vice president of KCMA, said, “The KCMA board of directors reviews the ESP specifications annually and acts on the recommendations of its ESP Committee. Third-party verification continues to be a critical part of the program. By re-evaluating these specifications each year, we ensure that ESP maintains its credibility by keeping up with the latest technology, changes in industry standards and new federal/state regulations.” KCMA ESP certified cabinets could be identified by the ESP seal, located on sink bases and vanity bases of all certified lines. Proposition 65 identifies the substance as exposed from wood products when they are drilled, sawed, sanded, machined, or otherwise handled in a manner that will produce wood dust. The State of California granted a one-year compliance time, which means that the following information needs to be provided within that time frame from December 2010: 1.) Any manufacturer, wholesaler, or business entity that ships lumber to California or suspects that an interim wholesaler will ship lumber to California, must provide a warning that states: Drilling, sawing, sanding or machining wood products generates wood dust, a substance known to the State of California to cause cancer. Avoid inhaling wood dust by wearing a dust mask or other safeguards for personal protection. 2.) This warning must be placed in retail outlets in California as well. Non-compliance and if found in violation of Proposition 65 could mean a ,500 per day fine for each violation. • Tel: (506) 632-7777 Tel: (506) 992-9020 Fax: (506) 992-9021 FEBRUARY/2011 11
