Buyers were being cautious about purchasing Red Oak as some anticipated further price declines for this species. Flooring manufacturers had also reduced their Red Oak flooring production. The seasonally adjusted annual rate of housing starts was 187,200 units in November 2010 according to Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC). This is up from 167,800 units in October of that year. “Housing starts moved higher in November primarily due to a strong increase in urban multiple starts in Ontario,” said the Chief Economist at CMHC’s Market Analysis Centre. “The increase in housing starts in Ontario in November was more than enough to offset declines in all other regions of the country.” The increase in the level of multiple starts recorded in Ontario in November relative to October was attributed to the start of a number of major apartment projects located mainly in the Toronto area. Looking ahead into 2011, housing starts will gradually become more closely aligned to demographic demand, which is currently estimated at about 175,000 units per year. The seasonally adjusted annual rate of urban starts increased by 14.6 percent to 163,100 units in November. Urban multiple starts went up by 20.9 percent in November to 101,800 units, while single urban starts moved up by 5.5 percent to 61,300 units. Multiple unit starts went up 29,900 units from October to November in Ontario, while it remained relatively stable in the Prairie Region and decreased in other regions. November’s seasonally adjusted annual rate of urban starts increased by 82.8 percent in Ontario. Elsewhere, urban starts decreased by 24 percent in Atlantic Canada, by 21.3 percent in British Columbia, by 15.2 percent in Quebec and by 1.5 percent in the Prairie Region. Rural starts were estimated at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 24,100 units in November. • ONTARIO TRENDS - Continued from page 8 “The global economic recovery is proceeding largely as expected, although risks have increased,’’ the statement said, citing renewed concerns that European debt woes will spill into global financial markets. The bank said demand in the U.S. remains weak, and even generally robust emerging markets such as China and India are seeing a deceleration of economic activity. “The recovery in Canada, in the second half of 2010, appears slightly weaker than the bank projected largely as a result of falling exports,” it added. “This underlines a previously identified risk that a combination of disappointing productivity performance and persistent strength in the Canadian dollar could dampen the expected recovery of net exports.’’ Canada’s annual inflation rate slowed more than expected in November 2010 from a two-year high in October, providing relief for the central bank as it seeks to keep interest rates low to support the still-fragile recovery. The Consumer Price Index edged up 0.1 percent in the month for an annual rate of 2 percent, Statistics Canada said. That was down from 2.4 percent annual inflation in the previous month and below the market forecast of 2.2 percent, pushing the Canadian dollar to a session low. Overall, Statistics Canada’s leading indicator index in November 2010 was up 0.3 percent versus October, the same month-to-month percentage climb as in the period before. Canada’s third quarter GDP growth was only 1.0 percent. It fell below the U.S. level (+2.5 percent) for the first time since 2009’s third quarter. 56 Hardwoods...A Renewable Resource

ONTARIO TRENDS - Continued In November 2010, the index recei ed a particular boost from the housing sector (+2.0 percent), as both existing home sales and new home starts stabilized after faltering in the middle months of 2010. Canada will be monitoring inflation as well for a too-rapid advance. With third quarter growth in Canada weaker than in the U.S. (+1.0 percent annualized), the Bank of Canada will be uncomfortable with any thought of having to resume interest rate hikes. • Modern Cross Circulation Kilns • Quality Millwork 10,000,000 BF Air Dried Yard P.O.
