According to a company representative, Baker Banding Notch Groovers, also known as banding strap machines or military notchers, create strips of wood with a groove notched out down the length of the strip for banding straps. These are used to protect goods as well as the pallets on which they are packaged. The Baker Band Notch Groover, Version I, will cut 2x6’s (or up to 10”-wide material) into two 2”-wide banding strips with a 3/8”-deep groove down the middle of each. The Banding Notch Groover I will cut the wood it receives into individual boards, the Baker Bandking Notch Groover II will accept precut boards up to 8 inches wide and notch a groove wherever necessary. The representative said the new Notch Groover I and II are fully adjustable to accommodate different board thicknesses and widths. LEED CERTIFIED GREEN BUILDING REACHES 1 BILLION SQUARE-FEET The total footprint of commercial projects certified under the U.S. Green Building Council’s (USGBC) LEED Green Building Rating System recently surpassed one billion square feet. Another six billion square feet of projects are registered and currently working toward LEED certification around the world. “This traction demonstrates the transformation of the way we design, build and operate buildings,” said Rick Fedrizzi, President, CEO and Founding Chair, USGBC. “Not only does green building contribute to saving energy, water and money, it also creates green jobs that will grow and energize our economy.” “The impact of these one billion square feet can be seen in communities around the world,” said Peter Templeton, President of the Green Building Certification Institute, the certifying body for LEED projects. “The use of LEED represents a growing global commitment to improving our environment for future generations.” According to the U.S. Green Building Council, since it was first introduced to the marketplace in 2000, over 36,000 commercial projects and 38,000 single-family homes have participated in LEED. By consuming less energy, LEED-certified buildings save money for families, businesses and taxpayers; reduce greenhouse gas emissions; Mixed Truckloads Surfacing S2S Double End Trim Inspection Services Dry Kilns (400,000 ft cap) Export Packaging Container Loading Yard Storage Dry Storage Rail Siding Straight Line Rip Multi Line Rip Resaw Complete export preparation at our wholesale distribution yards with milling facilities at Greensboro and Pleasant Garden, NC. EPA CONSIDERS AMENDMENTS TO BOILER RULE The Hardwood Federation and many other wood products organizations submitted comments to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in objection to its proposed “Boiler MACT” ruling, which would regulate wood residue under the same category as fossil fuels. The rule would require all boilers to achieve “Maximum Achievable Control Technology” (MACT), minimum levels of pollutants that are beyond what boilers on the market can achieve today. Many organizations have worked to educate members of Congress on this issue, and it was a priority during the Hardwood Federation “Fly- In” meetings. A grassroots effort generated 43 letters to 35 Congressmen. Both the House and the Senate sent letters to EPA Administrator Lisa Jackson objecting to the new ruling and 114 House Members and 41 Senators signed on to the letter. Receptive to the push, EPA is considering amending the ruling. Meetings have been arranged with wood product industry representatives. According to sources, EPA is considering allowing some flexibility for pollutants that are demonstrated to pose no public health threat. The coalition will continue to keep pressure on the Agency as the final ruling is due later this month. If the ruling goes through as it currently stands, most boilers used by the Hardwood industry would have to be upgraded or replaced, and it would provide a significant disincentive to use wood residue instead of fossil fuel. STANLEY FURNITURE SALES FALL BRINGING SHARE OFFERS Stanley Furniture Company Inc., headquartered in Stanleytown, Va., recently stated it would distribute to the holders of its common stock rights to purchase .322226 shares of common stock at .00 per share according to Woodworking Network. The furniture company expects to generate million if fully subscribed. The company recently reported net sales of .9 million, a drop of 9.3 percent from the same time period last year. Net loss was reported at .9 million, compared to a net loss of .1 million in 2009. Once manufactured overseas, the company has begun to produce all of its Young America furniture line domestically. “The increased prices on this product line and the improved operating efficiencies at our Robbinsville, N.C., plant drove the improvement in our operating results,” President and CEO Glenn Prillaman said. Stanley Furniture’s adult product line is moving to be completely globally sourced. “We anticipate operating inefficiencies stemming from the wind-down of this plant and the disruption created by this move may reduce sales and increase our operating loss,” Prillaman predicted. “However, our partner factories overseas are already making a significant portion of this product line, and we anticipate a smooth operational transition as we shift our remaining domestic production to these suppliers.” • www.bingamanlumber.com 12 Species Logs Lumber Strips Dimensions Ripping Surfacing More Than 10 Million Board Feet of Inventory More Than 1 Million Board Feet of Kiln Capacity Consistent Quality Decades of Experience Commitment to Service Bingaman & Son Lumber, Inc.
