TRADE TALK VALUE ADDED SERVICES Color Sorting Pulled to Width Sorting Ripped to Precision Widths SLR1E S4S Proprietary Grades SCOTLAND NECK, NC—Josey Lumber Company Inc., based here, which celebrated their 30th year as a Hardwood lumber manufacturing business last year, recently installed a third dry kiln from SII Dry Kilns, based in Lexington, NC. Joey Josey, company owner and president, said, “This additional SII Dry Kiln has a capacity of 120,000 board feet per charge, which will bring our new kiln capacity to 260,000 board feet per charge.” He continued, “Our dry kilns are presently operating on a 150 horsepower Hurst propane boiler at Joco Lumber Inc., which is a division of Josey Lumber Company.” Both companies are located on the same tract of land. Joco Lumber Inc. also has a new 400 horsepower Hurst wood fired boiler that furnishes the steam to run their dry kilns. Last year Josey Lumber Co. purchased an 80,000-square-foot metal building situated on 12 acres adjacent to its Hardwood band mill operation. This building houses 4,000-square-feet of new office space and the company’s dry line equipment, which is utilized to process their kiln-dried lumber. Joco Lumber also installed a fully enclosed warehouse last year for storing the company’s bundles of kiln-dried lumber. Today Josey Lumber Company Inc. has 30 employees at its sawmill operations; and 10 employees at its new kiln-dried lumber division, Joco Lumber Inc. Joey’s two sons, Tripp and Logan, work with him in the Hardwood lumber business. Tripp Josey is a vice president in charge of log procurement, scaling and accounting. He also is a relief sawyer for his family’s band mill facility. Logan Josey is a vice president, as well, who is in charge of the lumberyard, maintenance, the dry kilns and boilers. Logan also helps manage the personnel and is second in command to Plant Manager Gary Browder, who has been with Josey Lumber Company Inc. for 20 years. The firm cuts approximately 10 million board feet a year that includes Hardwood lumber, cants and timbers. This operation manufactures and sells lumber in these species: Red and White Oak, Soft Maple, Ash, Poplar and Cypress. Their lumber is sold green, air-dried and kiln-dried, rough or surfaced. The company currently has 10 SII Design dry kilns and two steamers, each at 100,000 board foot capacity. Missouri Walnut manufactures 15 million board feet of kiln-dried Walnut lumber, offering the product internationally as well as domestically. Missouri Walnut also has a warehouse in Ontario, CA, to service the distribution market on the West Coast. The company recently expanded into the imported lumber business offering 4/4 and 8/4 high-grade Teak, plain and quartersawn. Inventory is available at both locations.
