ALC MEMBERS SHARE MARKET INSIGHTS AT SPRING MEETING By Gary Miller Myrtle Beach, SC– Approximately 187 members and/ or guests of the Appalachian Lumbermen’s Club (ALC) attended the organization’s recent Annual Spring Beach Meeting, held here at the Ocean Reef Seaside Resort. A Texas Scramble golf game was played at the River Hills Golf Club. The winning golf team with an eight under par consisted of: Bryan Rutherford and Jeff Dougherty of Ally Global Logistics LLC located in Jacksonville, FL; Steve Leonard, Lawrence Lumber Company Inc., Maiden, NC; and Stephen Zambo, Ally Global Logistics LLC, Norwell, MA. Winner of Closest to the Pin was Mike Greetham, Consolidated Wood Products, Burlington, ON; and, Jeff Dougherty of Ally Global Logistics LLC located in Jacksonville, FL, finished first in the Longest Drive Competition. Early bird attendees of the meeting were treated to a cocktail party, and all enjoyed dinner together on Saturday night. Additionally, the ALC hosted a Kentucky Derby party on Saturday evening which provided guests an opportunity to dress up in Derby fashion and watch the horse race on a big screen TV. Ken Stephens of Associated Hardwoods was judged as being the best dressed male in Kentucky Derby attire, while his wife, Mary, was judged as being the best dressed female. Ken Stephens of Associated Hardwoods and Greg Pappas of Collins Hardwood won the horseshoe tournament; and Brian Ballard of Tioga Hardwoods Inc. and Michael Hilburn of Raelan, Grant, Jamie, Lizzy and baby Hughston Beasley, Beasley Forest Products Inc., Hazlehurst, GA Jeremy Pitts and Kim Watson-Pitts, BOLDesign Inc., Hudson, NC; Mary and Ken Stephens, Associated Hardwoods Inc., Granite Falls, NC; and Fabiola Gamarra-Hilburn and Michael Hilburn, King City Forwarding USA Inc., Floyds Knobs, IN 30 JULY 2019 n NATIONAL HARDWOOD MAGAZINE

Linwood Truitt, Beasley Forest Products Inc., Hazlehurst, GA; Rodney Lawing, Conover Lumber Co. Inc., Conover, NC; and Ray Turner, Beasley Forest Products Inc. The golf team that came in second place included: Cody Robbins, W.R. Hardwoods Inc. LLC, West Liberty, KY; Terry Robbins, TM Hardwoods LLC, Helenwood, TN; Connor Froning, Oaks Unlimited Inc., Waynesville, NC; and William Robbins, W.R. Hardwoods Inc. LLC King City Forwarding USA Inc. came in first in the corn hole tournament. Comments offered by attendees regarding the lumber industry were mixed. A salesman at a sawmill operation said, “We lost some time running our mills at the rate we wanted in late winter and early spring. During those two times of the year we really got close to running out of logs. Now we have plenty of logs.” He further commented, “The Common grades of Poplar seem to be doing really well up to this point, but FAS Poplar lumber has been weak for us. Of course, Red Oak lumber is continuing to struggle to some extent, and White Oak lumber seems to be holding its own.
