It is planned to launch in May/June and run for the rest of the year and will be focused around Red Oak, Maple and Cherry. • Helping specifiers: AHEC staff and consultants will continue to respond to technical inquiries from architects and designers. • Monitoring phyto and other trade issues: AHEC staff continue to monitor changes in phytosanitary and other regulatory barriers and issue alerts to the industry. Example of recent phyto updates include EU changes to Elm imports, Red Oak phyto declaration changes and changes to veneer phyto requirements along with updated Indian guidelines on KD requirements and changes Mexican Red Oak bark allowances. • Webinars for architects/designers: Using new digital platforms, AHEC will be rolling out a series of online webinars, starting at the end of April, presenting American Hardwood species, AHEC’s online tools, sustainability and legality of U.S. Hardwoods and some of AHEC’s pioneering projects. • New species guide: As well as our regular communication when launching a new publication, we will create a digital launch event where AHEC will present the new guide, explain the species and technical detail further and have a live Q+A session with the media. AHEC will be rolling out the new guide in English, Spanish, Italian, French, German and Polish over the summer, with other languages to follow including online presentations in the respective countries. • Webinars for the trade: I will deliver a specific presentation on the U.S. Hardwood industry, trade flows and the impacts of the coronavirus trade-wars and global economic slowdown. AHEC will also run online workshops for the Hardwood trade on demonstrating legality and sustainability for U.S. Hardwoods using AHEC tools such as the AHEP to be delivered by Rupert Oliver. • Podcasts: AHEC is partnering with Disegno magazine (and seeking additional global partners) to create a new podcast series ‘Words on Wood’ that will be focused around the forest and trees, tapping into the wider conversations that are currently going on in the media as well as some more focused episodes on the U.S. Hardwood resource. We will have the same host throughout the series

who will be speaking to various guests, experts in the industry, whether these are foresters, designers, scientists, authors, journalists, etc. who can offer interesting insider information on the forest and environment. • More social media activity and advertising: With many design weeks for the year being cancelled there has been a trend towards creating ‘virtual design weeks’ hosted on online magazines. AHEC will strategically place banner adverts during these digital design weeks to try and ramp up our website visitors. • Re-working video content: Working in collaboration with one of our best producers, AHEC will be reworking old video footage from our extensive archive to create a bespoke inspirational film about AHEC’s sustainability message and push this out to media, accompanied by exclusive interviews. • Further website development: AHEC will be updating the interactive forest map with the latest data sourced from the FIA (Forest Inventory Analysis) and keeping sustainability messages front and center of all press communication. The interactive map has already been updated to include links to each State’s “Forest Action Plan”. • Vietnam Red Oak promotion: AHEC has recently commissioned solid Red Oak furniture pieces from designer John Kelly designed to highlight the natural color and characteristics of Red Oak as well as staining/finishing potential. These pieces will be exhibited in AHEC trade show stands across Southeast Asia. • CLT trials: We currently have two manufacturers in Europe willing to trial Tulipwood CLT. AHEC is supplying 6m3 of ripped to width Tulipwood to each manufacturer, prepared in Italy from donated lumber. The first parcel is ready to be delivered to Spain but is waiting for the factory to reopen from lockdown. The second parcel will be machined once lock down restrictions are lifted in Italy. It is hoped that the trials can then take place in the summer. • Mexico Furniture Design Competition: The 2020 version of this bi-annual event remains on track with participating universities streaming AHEC “Introduction to American Hardwoods” seminars directly to design students. We expect to draw several hundred entries and the winning prototypes will be awarded and displayed in early 2021. n MILLERWOODTRADEPUB.COM NHLA NEWS Continued from page 17 are stronger together than we are alone. In lieu of flowers, mourners are asked to consider memorial donations to the American Cancer Society or the Alzheimer’s Association. n Barry Lester Cook Barry Lester Cook, director and state forester of the WV Division of Forestry, has passed away at age 70. After graduation from West Virginia University, Cook began his forestry career as a logging superintendent for Weyerhaeuser Co., then became procurement forester for J.P. Hamer Lumber Co. before joining Coastal Lumber Co. as procurement manager in 1978. He resigned in 2002 as vice president of operations to become president of Forest Products Group, an arm of Kimball International. Cook, who held an MBA from Duke University, and his wife, Donna, then bought and operated Indiana Hardwoods in Chandler, IN. The family relocated to Beckley, WV in 2007 so he could oversee the acquisition of Indiana Hardwoods by Cranberry Lumber Co. Since that time, he had consulted on forestry projects as owner of Cook Natural Resources. Cook was named WV State Forester in 2018. A Tree of Life Planting ceremony was planned in Morgantown, WV. In lieu of flowers, the family has established an educational expense fund for Cook’s children. Donations may be made to the Cook Children’s Education Fund and put in care of his wife at 900 Overlook Dr., Beckley, WV 25801.
