In Memoriam Dean P.

In Memoriam Dean P. Baker Dean P. Baker, 86 of Akron, IN, passed on Sept. 12, 2023, at his residence. Dean was born on March 2, 1937, in Canton, SD, to the late Edgar Paul and Annabelle Marie (Ellis) Baker. He married on June 6, 1959, in Clarion, IA, to Suzanne Turk, she survives. They moved to Akron from Clarion, IA, in 1964. Dean retired in 1999 as President of Pike Lumber Company of Akron, but he would tell you he was a forester from Iowa State University. He was a longtime member of the Akron United Methodist Church, where he served numerous roles. He also was an active member in the Akron Lions Club and various industry associations, which included, the Indiana Hardwood Lumbermen’s Association and the Indiana Forest and Woodland Owners’ Association. He is survived by his wife Suzanne Baker of Akron; son Chris and wife Darleen Baker of Rochester; daughter Sarah and husband Richard Solano of Akron; grandchildren Nathan Baker, Daniel and wife Sara Solano, Andrea Baker, Adam and wife Celia Solano, and Thomas Solano; and sister Lois Baker of Edina, MN. Dean was preceded in death by his parents. Memorial contributions can be made in his memory to the Beaver Dam Community Church/Wheels on Fire to assist the community members who are fighting cancer or to the Akron United Methodist Church Endowment Fund. Red Oak seems to have started to pick up and Poplar’s pricing is still a concern,” he continued. He sells to end use manufacturers, such as millwork, flooring and furniture makers, as well as distributors. “All of our customers’ business seems to have also dropped off to some degree. We are working 40 hours a week, we haven’t had to work short time, but we aren’t putting in over time,” he said. In Georgia a lumber representative said that his marketplace has been better than it has been over the past six months. He offers Red Oak in thicknesses of 4/4 and 5/4, Poplar in thicknesses of 4/4, 5/4, 6/4, 8/4 and 10/4 and White Oak in 4/4. “White Oak is my best seller in all grades. Red Oak is selling well in FAS and No. 2 Common, I just wish that there was more volume there. FAS Poplar is doing well and so is Poplar in No. 2 Common,” he said. He added that his biggest issue with Poplar is getting it into certain markets. “From a freight standpoint, I can’t match what people want to pay for it and also get it to port. When the price of Poplar loosens up I think that it will be just fine.” He sells to Hardwood distribution, domestic end use customers, such as flooring and cabinetry and to exporters. “I react to what my customers want to buy and it doesn’t matter what market I am selling into, the prices vary from customer to customer,” he mentioned. n Scan and sign-up to get all 13 digital issues of National Hardwood Magazine FREE and delivered directly to your inbox.
