News from suppliers CANADIAN TRENDS about prices, trends, sales and inventories ONTARIO It has been busy for the Hardwood industry as companies either reopened, or rehired or added employees to increase production and return to a semblance of normalcy in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic that struck in March. For the industry, it is still in recovery mode, although at a slower pace than is preferred. A shortage of labor is not helping the industry to get back on its feet, both for manufacturers and end users. Demand for Hardwood products appear to be rebounding, noted contacts, with improved production being felt in the Hardwood flooring, cabinet and mouldings sectors. There is also the issue of finding adequate supplies as production had also been curtailed since the beginning of the pandemic. Logging and sawmill operations are trying to catch up to respond to demand. Some contacts also noted that sales on export markets were slower over the summer months to China, some European countries and to the Middle East. With reduced production, it also means making it harder to obtain kiln-dried inventories for certain species. Hard Maple which had been readily available earlier in the summer has suddenly become harder to find in needed quantities.
