From The Fire Touched

From The Fire Touched Forests of California To Premium Lumber Ready to Be Used Klamath National Forest after the Antelope fire, prior to restoration work. Partnerships For Forest Health: The National Wild Turkey Federation (NWTF) and the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Forest Service are achieving what was once considered an impossible task. NWTF and the Forest Service signed a 20-year Master Stewardship Agree to combat our wildfire crisis, and we at Neiman couldn’t be more excited to be a part of it. The focus of the project is to identify high risk Photo courtesy of Ark Encounter, Williamstown, KY A feller-buncher clearing and decking dead timber to restore the landscape and later process into renewable wood products. areas that need forest treatments to be completed but lack the market for wood fiber that must be removed from the landscape to meet land management objectives. The first timber sale selected for the project was one turned back due to some of the catastrophic wildfires that affected California. Proof of Concept Before the official pilot project launched, we took it upon ourselves to test the concept of transporting timber by rail. While this concept isn’t new, it certainly isn’t a common practice in today’s day and age. Finding rail cars to retrofit was a challenge in itself. Believing fully in the mission of this project, we’ve invested over million to demonstrate the viability of transporting logs at a pace and scale needed to help address the wildfire crisis. This summer with the help of our Conservation Partners like NWTF and Transportation Partners, we have repurposed over 50 rail cars to expand our capacity to meet the needs of the forest. In April 2023 we signed our first contract with NWTF to help revitalize a project on the Klamath Nation Forest. The ponderosa pine and sugar pine are transported to our mill in Gilchrist, OR where it is debarked, and loaded onto rail cars, where it will be delivered to our operation in Hulett, WY. The burned and green timber will be utilized as ponderosa and sugar pine boards, pattern and shop. Tree Species that still have strong local markets like ESLP and fir are delivered to local mills to be processed in their operations. In June, the first logs from the pilot project arrived in Hulett. This project reduces the risk of wildfires, supports water quality efforts, and supports wildlife habitat restoration. But also boosts the local economies of the parties involved and helps create quality lumber products from a material that would have otherwise been tossed to the side. By salvaging fire-affected timber, we not only mitigate environmental impact but also unlock new possibilities for your business. We are turning crisis affected timbers into quality and premium lumber. Join us in transforming the aftermath of wildfires into a beacon of resilience and innovation.
