Who’s Who in Softwoods Galen Smith Collins, located in Portland, OR, recently announced that Galen Smith has rejoined the company as project manager. Smith attended Willamette University, located in Salem, OR, from 2002 to 2006, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts degree in history. He went on to attend the University of Washington’s Michael G. Foster School of Business, from which he earned a Master of Business Administration degree with a finance focus in 2013. Smith started his career in the forest products industry in Pleasant River Lumber’s Spruce sales manager is Mikelle Davenport. The company is headquartered in Dover-Foxcroft, ME. Pleasant River Lumber produces 300 million board feet annually of Spruce and Pine lumber. Lumber is sold in 2x4’s (6, 8 and 10-inches); 1x3, 1x4, 1x5 and 1x6’s in No. 1, 2 and 3 grade, PMO and ECO in No. 3 and Better. Pleasant River Lumber operates two Spruce mills and two Pine mills, giving flexibility to ship mixed loads. Pellham American Wood Council Volunteers for Responsible Deconstruction AWC and Second Chance work together to make a more sustainable building environment By: Robert Glowinski, President & CEO of the American Wood Council In November, staff from the American Wood Council’s (AWC) Washington, D.C. and Leesburg, VA offices volunteered with Second Chance, a Baltimore-based nonprofit that provides people, materials and the environment with a “second chance.” The organization deconstructs buildings and homes, salvages usable materials and makes those - and other donated items - available to the public for reuse in their 200,000 square feet of retail space. With the revenue the retail side generates, they are then able to provide job training and workforce devel- APA – The Engineered Wood Association has updated its Wall Bracing Calculator. The tool, designed to simplify the design of residential structures, has been amended to include the 2018 International Residential Code (IRC) wall bracing requirements along with the 2009, 2012 and 2015 requirements.
