Night Watch emulates the hues of nature. PPG Promises Beauty That Lasts Continuing an annual trend, PPG recently announced the company’s Color of the Year, which for 2019 is Night Watch. Pittsburgh, PA–Innovation and quality continue to be the driving priorities for PPG Industries Inc., headquartered here. In 2019, a particular focus will be expanding the use of the next generation technologies that the company has perfected during the company’s 135-year history. Namely, this will be apparent in the launch of the new Duracolor MAX, which will debut this spring. David Jeffers PPG TrueFinish Building Products’ national segment manager for North America, stated, “Duracolor is our star performer for pre-finishing a wide variety of exterior building materials. The next generation will retain and build on the high performance it has always been known for. We’re using advanced technology to make it suitable for application on multiple substrates and taking the performance to new levels.” The technologies backing this new generation of Duracolor MAX have been utilized by PPG in a variety of ways across the segments of the business, some of which include vehicle and aerospace-grade coatings. With coating products for nearly every surface you can imagine, for any industry you can picture, you can expect to find PPG finishes on everything from the walls and doors of your home “ We have a deep knowledge of the pre-stain, pre-prime and pre-finishing segments of the building products industry. -David Jeffers, national segment manager for North America, PPG TrueFinish Building Products “ to the wings and bodies of airplanes. According to Jeffers, Duracolor MAX is a prime product for the building materials industry. And there is a trio of ways that it and other PPG TrueFinish Building Products’ coatings are sold. The first opportunity, Jeffers stated, is the actual manufacturers or remanufacturers of building material substrates who have the ability to apply coatings to bring an added value proposition. He explained, “These are manufacturers who operate automated coating lines that can prime and pre-finish their products so that building materials, including siding and trim, can be distributed throughout their selling network for ready to install instant availability.” The second category is building material distributors who operate their own coating line. Jeffers noted, “While these are not the manufacturers of the products they are selling, they are capable of priming and pre-finishing products for jobs that want the instant curb appeal that our coatings offer.” The third selling opportunity for PPG TrueFinish Building Products is thirdparty pre-finishers. Jeffers said, “Third-party finishers can be considered the best option for some large projects due to the fact that they’re often running 24/7 and coating various materials in large job lot orders. They don’t manufacture or own the substrate being coated, so they can instead focus all of their attention on perfecting the coating process.” It is only through these manufacturers/distributors and third-party finishers that PPG TrueFinish Building Products’ coatings and finishes are offered. No directto-consumer sales are made. For instance, you won’t find one of the company’s newest products, MACHINECOAT® Waterborne Weathering Stain, on any retail shelf. MachineCoat Waterborne Weathering Stains are volatile organic compoundfree (VOC) coatings that, when applied to new Cedar shingles at the OEM manufacturer’s facility, offer a greatly accelerated weathered effect to the color of the wood. Within a few months of being coated with MachineCoat Waterborne Weathering Stain, the Cedar shingles will have aged to the prized gray/silver ap- Continued on page 46 Page 8 Softwood Forest Products Buyer n January/February 2019
