INTRODUCTION 1. Argentina Eduardo Falú, Villancico de la Falta de Fe (For a World Without Faith) The composer and guitarist Eduardo Falú (b. 1928) is one of Argentina’s most celebrated musicians. He has toured and performed throughout North and South America and across Europe and has a prodigious output of compositions, many of which have been recorded. Eduardo Falú has received honorary doctorates from the Universidad Nacional de Río Cuarto and the Instituto Universitario Aeronáutico de la República, and he is a member of the Argentinian National Academy of Music. The villancico is a popular form of religious song developed in Spain in the fifteenth century and later adopted in Latin America. Villancicos are traditionally sung by children on Christmas Eve, but they are also sung by adults, drawn by their deep mystical meaning and sincerity. A characteristic of the Latin American villancico is a focus on the material needs of the newborn child, which include instruments so that he may dance. Like many traditional villancicos, Villancico de la Falta de Fe has a simple syllabic melody with gentle cross-rhythms; in this case, the accompanying voices seem to imitate the sound of a guitar. for online perusal only 2. Armenia Movses Khorenatsi arr. Vahram Sargsyan, Khorurd Metz (Great Mystery) A graduate of the Yerevan Komitas State Conservatory (2003), where he studied with Ashot Zohrabyan, Vahram Sargsyan (b. 1981) is a composer principally of choral works. He is also active as a choral conductor in Armenia, and his music has been performed across Europe, and in North America at the Sixth World Symposium of Choral Music in Minneapolis (2002). Khorurd Metz is an Armenian sacred hymn for the feast of the Nativity. This form of hymn, or sharakan, was the principal genre of Armenian sacred music between the fifth and fifteenth centuries. Movses Khorenatsi, who wrote both the words and the melody, was one of the Armenia’s greatest sharakan composers, and his melody persists throughout this modal, polyphonic arrangement, passing from one voice to another. Vahram Sargsyan’s style is influenced by the choral music of Komitas Vardapet (1869–1935), one of the founders of the Armenian national school of musical composition. 3. Australia Stephen Leek, Southern Cross The Australian composer and conductor Stephen Leek (b. 1959) has been active at the forefront of developments in choral music in Australia since the early 1980s. His music captures the energies, rhythms, and colours of his homeland and is performed across the globe. For over a decade Stephen Leek has worked collaboratively with librettist Elizabeth Anne Williams, who is herself an acclaimed choral conductor and educator. He has received numerous awards, including the prestigious Robert Edler International Choral Prize (2003), and with his choir, The Australian Voices, he promotes the music of Australian composers around the world. On the oldest and smallest continent on the planet, the star formation of the Southern Cross is an important physical and symbolic icon for survival and encapsulates a national pride. The five stars have traditionally assisted sailors in navigating vii
