Vincent van Gogh en de liefde - Theses

Summary
The main theme of my bachelor thesis is the role of love in life of Vincent van Gogh. In this
regard are the most important topics his love for family, women, books, religion and art. According
to this I have divided my work into the individual chapters. I used Vincent´s correspondence to his
brother Theo as the main source of information.
The aim of my paper is to give a new view on Vincent´s life, mainly through his emotions and
passions. Vincent van Gogh was surely a very passionate and complicated person and that greatly
influenced his life and work. He often made impulsive decisions and wasn´t taking much care
about opinions of his surroundings. Changing of moods and strong depressions led even to his
suicide. In my opinion it was Vincent´s unusual character which was the main cause of creating
such a unique work of art. Van Gogh´s paintings are full of energy and reflect his emotional life. He
was always painting with overwhelming speed and that shocked not only his teachers but also other
painters. But thanks to this speed he precisely expressed his emotions and let also us to come into
his own inner world.
The whole life of Van Gogh was influenced by his love for family. His father inspired him by
religion, mother and dear brother Theo by art. In my opinion Theo was the most important and
beloved person in Vincent´s life and his long-lasting support helped to create Vincent´s
extraordinary work.
Very interesting part of Vincent´s life was his love for women. After careful study of his life are
some things obvious. Vincent considered especially older women being attractive and it was often
hard to distinguish the feelings of love from the feelings of compassion.
Important part of Vincent´s life was also books and his enthusiasm for reading. Among the
books which influenced him the most were L´Amour by Jules Michelet concerning love and in
relation to religion of course Bible and The Imitation of Christ by Thomase à Kempis.
Religion was also very important in Vincent´s life. Vincent was a fanatic believer in one period
of his life and that influenced not only him but also his relations with his father.
After study of life and passions of Vincent van Gogh it´s obvious how much he loved the art
through his whole life. Even in times, when he was fanatic believer and refused food, clean clothes
and soap, he decorated the walls of his rooms by prints. Already his first work was in the artistic
