With her innovative style, her Irish
humour and her use of different art
forms, Marguerite Donlon has won a
place in the German dance world and
beyond. The German dance critic and
editor Tanz, Arnd Wesemann wrote:
‘The cheeky Irish choreographer
removes the barriers and takes the man
in the street back to the theater. She is
far removed from all artistic ideologies
and never bores an audience. He
announced her as one of the thirtyseven
artists who carry hope and can
move the future of dance.’

‘My wish was to create for each
dancer a very personal solo, filming
a movement language which helps
to personify them as individual
people. They in turn shared their
own personal stories which we
then interwove into the piece. It is
about five young men who share a
‘way’ linking the past to the present
with their stories, allowing us for
a moment a glimpse of what made
them who they are.’

Strokes through the tail
In the foreword to an edition of the
score of Mozart’s Symphony in G KV
550, Marguerite Donlon read that Mozart
drew strokes over the notes in the
handwritten score to indicate a particular
way of playing. It gave the musician
the freedom to play the note long or
short, the idea of freedom in art is for
her very important.
The word ‘tail’ also refers to the back
of a tailcoat, and indeed tailcoats play in
the choreography. By means of tailcoat
and tutu, Marguerite Donlon demonstrates
how much we link our conception
of typically masculine or typically
feminine to defenceless objects. Or
better: how fast we perceive an object
as inappropriate when it is used outside
of its habitual context. Strokes through
the tail shows us that a half naked man
in a tutu can be not only really funny but
also markedly sexy. The same is true
for a woman in a tailcoat.`

Britten Dances
The Royal Ballet Flanders celebrated in
2013 the centenary of the great 20th
century British composer Benjamin Britten
with Britten Dances, a very special
programme that not only pays tribute to
this very British of composers, but also
unveils the dances that Britten’s music
continues to inspire.
The programme includes Jiri Kylián’s
masterpiece Forgotten Land and works
specially made on the Royal Ballet of
Flanders.
Ashley Page’s two short pieces by
Britten for the Royal Ballet Flanders: If
Memory Serves uses Britten’s Young
Apollo, which with its frantic energy
and speed in the music reflects all the
fun of a sun-drenched day by the sea.
In contrast, Courting the Senses is a
refined, stately dance reflecting the
grandeur of Britten’s arrangement of
Purcell’s Chacony.
Dream Weaver by Cameron McMillan,
explores the surreality of night and
the effects of insomnia, a half awake
dream state, where the subconscious
speaks. Britten’s remarkable guitar
piece Nocturnal is cut up and assembled
anew by leading contemporary
composer Larry Goves.
The Kamerorkest and Symfonieorkest
Vlaanderen conducted by
Benjamin Pope will accompany these
performances.
