Mudanças na mentalidade
O século XVIII foi um
período em que o repertório
de formas se enriqueceu e
toda uma paleta de cores se
aperfeiçoou. O colorido das
imagens barrocas transcrevia
êxtases, alegria de viver, ao
mesmo tempo que se
aproximava muito do gosto
popular pelas cores
simples e vivas.
A alegria que brotava das
cores, dos estuques, das talhas
e dos torneados, assim como o
poderio expresso pelas
colunas, pilastras e cúpulas
demonstravam que a arte
tinha, em si mesma, uma
razão de ser e sua justificação.
A arte da Contrarreforma
inventou o confessionário,
exaltou a Virgem e os santos
e opôs o triunfalismo católico
à modéstia e nudez da
Reforma Protestante.
O século XIX enriqueceria
mais ainda a vida dos baianos,
mas, sobretudo, com bens
materiais. As igrejas foram
atingidas pelos produtos das
novas tecnologias. Para ambos

combate aos protestantes,
hereges e gentios já não

During the 18 th century, the
repertory of shapes was
expanded, and the color
palette was enhanced. In
Baroque images, color was
used to translate ecstasy, joy of
living, and at the same time
communicate with popular
tastes through simple and
bright colors.
The joy emanating from the
colors, the stucco, the carvings
and turned wood, as well as
the might expressed by the
columns, pillars and domes
showed that art had its own
rationale. Counter-Reformation
art invented the confessional,
exalted the Virgin and the
saints and opposed Catholic
triumphalism to the modesty
and bareness of Protestant
Reformation.
In the 19 th century, the
lives of people in Bahia would
be even more enriched, but
mostly with material
possessions. Churches were
filled with the products of
new technologies. In both of
these centuries, ideas of
combating the Protestants, the
heretics and the gentiles were
no longer present.
