town of Valentia (Valencia da Alcântara?) andNorba Caesarina (Caceres), the neighbouringcivitas capital, following more or less the samecourse as the modern road from Marvão.Finally, a fourth road leaves town from the presumedgate in its northwestern walled side, withthe same orientation (45° NW) as the intramuralcardo maximus. It seems to connect Ammaiawith Aritium Vetus (Alvega?) where an importantcrossing of the River Tagus River is proposed,passing on its way Castelo de Vide and an areawith several Roman villae and farms. It is alsoseems to connect Ammaia to the main centralLusitanian road system and eventually to Olisipo(Lisbon) in the West.Along these roads, the main necropoleis (thefunerary areas) were located: geophysical surveyand legacy data identify some of them along thesouthern 35 and the northwestern roads, and infront of the museum, where the modern car-parkis located. Here the base of a monumental tombmade out of large granite blocks, found duringrecent excavations, is still visible 36.“Industrial” (quarrying of building stones andworkshops for metals) and agricultural (mainlyvegetable gardens) activities can also be locatedrespectively on the northwestern side, near thesteeper part of the slope of Malhadais hill, whereearlier research had wrongly presumed the presenceof a Roman theatre, and in the eastern areatoward the Sever river. Here the magnetic surveyalso revealed building structures, on both sidesthe main road leaving the town as a prolongationof the decumanus maximus 18.
