ARTISTAS, MÁQUINAS E
A INVENÇÃO DO COTIDIANO
ambiente digital.

estudos e pesquisas no âmbito da arte contemporânea.
Boa leitura.

OI FUTURO
Reunindo artistas locais,
nacionais e internacionais, o centro cultural focaliza a experiência artística e cultural
supostamente seriam nossas necessidades e anseios.
As ações dessas

gracejo.
Deslocando a

Inicialmente, a obra pareceria

do humano.
Trabalhando no escoadouro dessa “Grande Máquina” 12 social, o grão-mestre gambiólogo
Superando a oposição antagonística,

deveria buscar, no cotidiano, o estranhamento, o jogo, o movimento, o ludus perdido.
Atualmente, encaixotamos as brincadeiras.
signos do capital tecnológico. Consideramos, o tempo todo, principalmente nos dias

4 No ensaio “Brinquedo e brincadeira:
Observações sobre uma obra monumental”,
Benjamin retoma brevemente
a teoria freudiana. “... ao contrário dos
pesadelos traumáticos e das neuroses
de guerra, que constituem o plano
maior do ensaio freudiano, em que o
retornar compulsivo às cenas de perigo
são sintomas patológicos da sujeição
dos indivíduos àquilo que não
conseguem elaborar e que, por isso
mesmo, retorna sem consentimento,
a brincadeira repetitiva das crianças
é orquestrada por elas mesmas e se
torna fonte de prazer. Freud observa
que elas gostam de ouvir as mesmas
histórias, sempre do mesmo jeito, para
reviver aquela primeira sensação de
leitura. Já quando os adultos escutam
a mesma piada uma segunda
vez, a graça se perde. A novidade é,
para eles, condição indispensável da
fruição e do deleite. Assim sendo, ao
deixar-se para trás a infância, perde-se
também a capacidade de encontrar o
novo pela repetição”. (BINES, Rosana

“The way things go” (Do jeito que as coisas andam) no arquivo do Guggenheim 7 .

no dia a dia.
“O movimento
é estático! O movimento é estático porque ele é a única coisa imutável. (...)
57
A única certeza é que o movimento, a mudança e a metamorfose existem. (...) Acredite
O algoritmo
da grande máquina improvisa (?) da pior maneira possível. Ficou famoso, no
Paulo Nenflídio, no

Descobrimos as artimanhas do Eterno (louvado seja Seu nome), roubamos suas
no controle.

a resposta, desconfie.
fazendo.

As 720 conexões elétricas dessa
montagem mecânica silenciosa formam o núcleo do projeto
O título do trabalho

trabalharam a pedra e construíram armadilhas 2 .
tramar, urdir, trair, conspirar, causar intriga.

Surgiram novas
máquinas e, consequentemente, novos enunciados, e vice-versa.
artificial conturbam novamente o panorama.

novo status.
“Classical art was about the behaviour of form, even the form of things, and today it’s
about the form of behaviour. […] it’s not about the creation of things anymore, it’s about
the creation of relations, what we do with things” 12 .
O movimento “Arts and Crafts” busca se contrapor
recursos, espalha falsas promessas, exclui as margens e programa a obsolescência.
a sociedade contemporânea.

contexto atual, a obra ganha novas leituras.
antebraços buscassem me convencer a fazer parte do sistema, provavelmente me

No senso comum, o tempo
O HOMEM E A MÁQUINA 75
Ele apresenta a instalação site-specific “Ocupação ZP
A segunda
Completam a
Solus”, obra do escritor e poeta Francês Raymond Russel.
concretismo e do neoconcretismo brasileiros e variações latino-americanas exemplificadas
nas obras de Jesus Rafael Soto, Carlos Cruz Diez e Julio Le Parc. A obra
tela do computador, a tipologia remete instantaneamente à estética do design gráfico

A exposição descontrolada a tais tecnologias vem deixando evidentes as nossas
O HOMEM E A MÁQUINA 77
a radiação de fundo do universo quanto o impertinente ronco de motores produzindo
A poética de Milton Marques sempre me pareceu perturbadora.
do mineral.
no papel do criador.
A inclusão do vídeo “The way things go” (Do jeito que as coisas andam), de Fischli e
no percurso.
maldade, tudo claro e evidente, causal. Ética, cada um tem a sua.

Conspirando
o mundo ao redor (GRAU e VEIGL, 2011, pág. 5).
Duas escolhas certeiras da curadoria fortalecem a exposição: a inclusão da
performance audiovisual “Pareidolia”, do grupo Kallpp, e a museografia.
desmistificando a “caixa-preta”.

MOTTA & LIMA
A parceria de Gisela Motta e Leandro Lima, paulistanos
nascidos em 1976, inicia-se no final dos anos 1990.
Desde então, eles utilizam diversas linguagens, como
vídeo, objeto e gambiarras, empregando padrões, medidas,
estruturas e suas variações, para criar situações
altamente construídas. Nelas, elementos naturais,
matemáticos e artificiais emulam o comportamento
orgânico, sintetizam fenômenos naturais e criam certa
ambiguidade, apesar da aparente objetividade. A dupla
explora justamente a região ambivalente entre o
sintético do natural e o natural do sintético.

The Art & Technology Collection scores its 123
titles with the publication referring to the exhibition
“Maquinações”, which took place from
June 4th to August 5th, 2018, at Oi Futuro,
flying to Belo Horizonte, São Paulo and
Piracicaba soon after, in partnership with other
cultural centers. The exhibition, based on the
concept of Gambiologia, developed by theoretician,
artist and curator Fred Paulino, presented
13 artists and some collectives from
Brazil and abroad, operating from the idea
that low-tech remodeling can generate new
scientific parameters in today's world.
The artworks and installations gravitated
from small, popular and everyday solutions to
robots created by artists dedicated to this
segment. All materializing, in diverse ways,
the concept of the “science of makeshifts”.
Now everything resurfaces in these photographic
records and theoretical texts. With this
book, we believe that Oi Futuro is contributing
to the dissemination of new issues, studies and
researches in the field of contemporary art.
Enjoy the reading.

CULTURAL EXECUTIVE MANAGER
OI FUTURO
The combination of art and technology allows
for intense experiences. Technological development
and recent means to record and
archive digital information seem not to be
aware of time or space limits, and have been
transforming not only humanity´s daily life, but
specially, artistic experience in its countless
possibilities of enjoyment, production, creation,
mediation and consumption.
This new relationship of the observer and the
work, and all sorts of thoughts raised by it, are
the guiding element of the curatorial axis Art
and Technology, which Sesc Palladium presents
to the public in the second half of 2018.
Bringing together local, national and international
artists, the cultural center focuses on
the artistic and cultural experiences mediated
by technology, in an intense and diverse program,
crosswise translated across all artistic
languages and also through seminars and lab
experiments that promise to agitate the public.
In this sense, it seems at least controversial
that Maquinações, a collective exhibition
curated by Fred Paulino, takes center stage in
this special program, since it promotes a technological
(de)construction and values interaction
over interactivity, pointing to analog solutions
developed by “inventists” in “an offline,
non-algorithmic, non-virtual environment”.
The reason for this assumed controversy lies in
the exaltation of affectivity found in the analog
experience, which, even when it is converted
to the digital environment, brings to viewers
feelings of identification and belonging, so
different from those found in binary systems,
often aseptic and foreign to the observer.
Maquinações is the third edition of the international
collective "Gambiologists", which
presents artists whose work is at the intersection
between art and invention. Their production
is based on the use of technological
devices and ordinary objects, arisen from a
subtle observation of everyday life. In developing
these gadgets, these “inventists” propose
new possibilities for the use of materials,
often subverting their original function.
With this exhibition - an important culmination
of the Art and Technology axis -, Sesc invites
everyone to a lively and dynamic experience,
of displacements, in a time when past and future
are mixed, in a process of constant reflection
on the now and its infinite opportunities.
SESC EM MINAS
MACHINES IN ACTION
The expression that gives the title to these
lines represents one of the main emblems of
modernity, in view of the technological and
industrial revolutions established in the last
centuries. Through them, Western civilizations
began to increasingly intervene in the environment
and natural processes, shaping them
for the sake of what was supposed to be our
needs and longings. Today, it is well known
that such a development project produces
dramatic consequences for life on the planet.
Among the side effects generated by the omnipresence
of the machine in our daily life, we
highlight an unexpected as well as an absurd
development: if, at first, technical apparatuses
are created and disseminated so that we can
use them, on the other hand, it is quite common
that the opposite happens, since we are
often subject to the designs of such devices.
In this case, it is the machines that use us in
function of their programs.
Facing this paradox involves conceiving
forms of humanization of technology, which
involves playing with their purposes, sometimes
displacing them from the prescribed
applications. In presenting experiments by
artists dedicated to unusual appropriations
of mechanical and electronic equipment, the
Maquinações exhibition puts on the scene
machines that “act” on unthinking records. The
actions of these machines are here delineated
according to poetic purposes, definitely unrelated
to their instrumental vocation.
The socio-educational work of Sesc has in the
“Spaces of Technologies and Arts” a favorable
platform to approach both criticaly and
inventively problems like this. In this case, it’s
the opportunity to observe the universe of
technological constructs from another angle,
through combinations capable of suspending
the naturalness with which we incorporate the
machines to our interaction with the world.

ARTISTS, MACHINES AND
THE INVENTION OF EVERYDAY
Until the mid-1980s, electronic artworks were based on analog platforms - from televisions,
antennas and their transmissions to analogue recording media such as cassette
or Betamax. From the 1990s, this production started to operate mostly on the
digital environment. The conversion of the audiovisual to digital media, besides the
universalization of computers and Internet migrated this production almost entirely to
the binary world and, more recently, to mobile computing.
However, even after the Internet boom and amid the chaos of social networks, there
are artists who use digital technology but also manifest an increasing interest in the
use of analog, mechanical, improvised and low cost solutions. They are creators who
develop technological works in an offline, non-algorithmic, non-virtual environment.
They do not give up using technical devices (and playing with them), but propose new
possibilities about their use, often subverting the original function of the components
themselves. In a sense, they focus on interaction rather than on interactivity, and in
doing so, they propose a more humane approach to technology.
These “inventartists” act at the intersection between art, science, technology and life.
They transform their studios in workshops, their workshops in labs, their labs in extension
of their lives. From the (de)construction of contraptions, inaccurate systems,
inventions with or without utility, they stimulate human symbiosis with technique and
present an art without an instruction manual. They propose peculiar machinations
about the artistic medium and the technological universe. They relate their creative
practice to play, to education, to social, to invention, with their hands-on while feet on
the ground. They act on the machines to turn machines into actions.
FRED PAULINO
CURATOR
André Mintz
Machines can be defined as mechanisms that acquire
a degree of independence from those who have created
them 2 . They are technical objects typically characterized
by their productive capacity and autonomous
functioning, which would allow them to replace
certain human competences. Perhaps this is why,
from the Antikythera mechanism in ancient Greece,
through the automatons of Mesopotamia´s first renaissance
3 , to Babbage, Lovelace and Turing analytical
machines, they seem to have been created to deal
with the founding puzzles of our experience: measuring
and taming time, recreating life and the movement
of bodies, externalizing thought. They would wind up,
it seems, the weird alterity of technical beings, as if,
even having being created by us, they could establish
a reality that is foreign to us.
Facing the imaginary which surrounds contemporary
computational machines - ‘bots’ and ‘algorithms’ – the
present seems to be, before anything else, machinic. It
doesn´t seem this way, however, that this theme comes
to the exhibition Maquinações (“Machinations”). Fred
Paulino’s curatorship makes a different gesture than of
this deepening of the split between humans and machines,
thus fissuring the imaginary of autonomy. Taking
new steps into his curatorial research started in 2010,
with the exhibition Gambiólogos, his interest lies in an
art that is critically or ironically using technologies, in the
setback of the discourse of innovation - an approach
in line with others that have been described as ‘technophagics’
by Giselle Beiguelman at that time 4 . Today,
such a view unfolds into a more specific interest in the
artists’ inventive gesture in the construction of everyday
machines ‘on the ground floor‘. The works in “Machinations”
thus point to a way of living with the contradiction
- only apparent - of simultaneously autonomous and
dependent machines; weird but still as how we are.
96
1.
“Metacircuit” (2015) by Paulo Nenflídio elaborates, at
first, the self-affirmation of a machinic alterity that addresses
us as a difference: “see how I speak”, “see how
I think”, the machine tells us. Yet, it exposes itself inside
out. The open box with wires and circuits on display
seems to contradict the cybernetic denomination of the
“black box” - the metaphor of an opaque enclosure in
which internal operations are concealed, defining itself
only by what it takes as input and offers as output. In
this artwork these aspects are confused in a machine
with its interior exposed, as a construct of wires and circuits,
while at the same time, through texts and sounds,
it claims its difference and autonomy.
The exposure of the objects constitution is an emblematic
aspect of gambiologia theme – an aesthetic proposition
taken up by the curator in 2008. Aiming at the
opposite of the smooth surfaces of digital gadgets,
gambiologia is inspired by inventive practices of makeshifts,
creating objects revealed as tangled threads of
technical and symbolic excesses of inlaid parts. While
the becoming autonomous of the technological machine
presupposed an organic integration of its parts,
makeshifts - as proposed by Gabriel Menotti 5 , inspired
by Simondon 6 - is situated halfway, with the whole and
its parts playing equal prominence. In a similar perspective,
Fernanda Bruno 7 describes makeshifts by their
“shameless” character, which reveals their guts and
multiplies the appropriations and combinations that
compose themselves.
In Azucena Losana’s “GIF: Generator of InterFerence”
(2016), this gesture emerges both as a machine building
strategy and a decomposition of animated images from
the internet. The GIF animation is recreated by the art-
ist with a handcrafted projection machine, where each
frame is displayed separately by imperfectly aligned
projectors and sequenced by an electronic circuit. In the
version of the piece presented in the exhibition, the image
is an excerpt from a television show in which Michel
Temer (former Brazil’s President) hands Silvio Santos
(TV show presenter) money, as if in jest. The precariousness
of the projection apparatus exacerbates the
artificiality of this short loop, cracking the image and
the political economy of GIF circulation on the internet 8 .
The click sounds in the circuit mark the emergence of
each frame, individualized in its sordidness - machine
decomposition, image and figurative gesture.
2.
In veteran Abraham Palatnik’s artwork it is not just about
exposing an underlying mechanism to the machine, although
it is all displayed in a transparent box. With a refined
balance between unity and fragmentation, in “Kinetic
C-5” (1968) the totality would only be found in the
dance of its parts, none of them secondary to the whole.
Without any other purpose, the machine only translates
the rotary motion of an engine into multiple smooth
motions of its components, arranged in a handcrafted
mechanism. Displacing the machine from the usual demand
for productivity, Palatnik’s artwork gives it another
choreography and speed, far from those characteristics
of machine’s application in the industry.
Located at the entrance of the gallery, the piece also
seems to point out that machines don´t come to the exhibition
to demonstrate their efficiency and it wouldn´t
be appropriate to evaluate them according to technical
parameters - as sometimes it happens in tech art. Otherwise,
it may be more appropriate to understand machines’
operation in an approximation of the concept of
performance, whose definition, by Richard Schechner 9 ,
is precisely in opposition to fulfillment. In the meaning
proposed by this author, performance would be understood
fundamentally as an action performed as an
exhibition of itself. Taken as performance, the operation
of a machinic work would be expressed by a dysfunction
of the technological machine, which, at one extreme,
would be exhausted in its own movement and,
displaced from any utilitarian function by the inventive
gesture of the artists, would open itself to other modes
of apprehension.
In “Antonyms machine” (2018) by Sara Lana, this subject
seems to be implicated in the constituent role of failure
in experience. Initially, the piece may seem to propose a
plain and autonomous machine, with its synthetic voice
responding, accurately, with the antonym of what we
say. This tentative perception soon fades, however, due
to the incongruous responses that inevitably emerge
in the interaction — if not by chance, by the testing of
its limits that we seem seduced to do as a way of attesting
our superiority to the machine. Failure, though,
is not ignored in the elaboration of this artwork, which
is not fully committed to proper functioning. Unthought
of technique, failures haunt state-of-the-art technology
with the prospect of imminent outburst. In everyday machines,
however, they are not fully purged. They remind
us that the supposed machinic autonomy is a transitory
and performative 10 product of constant adjustments
and adaptations making approximations to an idealized
condition that is never fully up to date.
3.
From the performance of the machine to the performance
of the body, “Little great actions” (2003) by Guto
Lacaz presents itself as an inventory of small gestures
elaborated in the historical couplings between bodies
and industrial objects. The series of prints features
pictograms similar to instruction manuals that illustrate
everyday actions such as striking a match or rewinding
a cassette tape with a pencil. These small thoughtless
movements, made “automatic” by repetition, become
vernacular gestures of postindustrial societies. As evidenced
by Lacaz, this repertoire is denaturalized and reflexively
taken, opening the industrial materiality to the
organicity of human bodies, which are transformed, to
some extent, to components of the use and standardization
of these products.
In his extensive review of the theme of the machine in
twentieth-century art, Andreas Broeckmann emphasizes
a certain autopoietic quality as a defining trace of
machinic beings 11 . There would be, he suggests, something
unsettling about the way we confront machines,
encounters he describes as antagonistic but also erotic.
In this sense, although typically understood by their autonomy
and closure, machines are approached by Broeckmann
with emphasis on their approximation or distance
from the human. Deepening this aspect, from an
anthropological perspective, Lucy Suchman 12 , before
Broeckmann, elaborated that the autonomous movement
of machines doesn’t happen in isolation from
transformations of the human. Especially in the proposition
of artificial intelligence and humanoid robots, the
development of machines is mutually linked to constant
reformulations, as to what would define intelligence
and the human. More than asking ourselves about machine’s
proper mode of existence, perhaps it is the case
to reflect upon how they would transform our own way
of being, our daily gestures and practices.
97
4.
Taking us to the last movement of this text, “Creed”
(2018) by Paulo Henrique ‘The Goose” Pessoa stands
on the world of industrial production and, precisely, on
its daily machinations in order to transform the world’s
landscapes. Working in the outflow of this “great social
machine” 13 , the gambiological grand master appropriates
from wastes of all sorts and resituates them in the
cultural memory of the consumer society. His weird
“valise objects” epitomize the capital’s disposable icons
in a tiny museum of surplus and accumulation. Parts
of gears, toys and dummies compose the installation,
which returns the impersonal results of the industry to
human scale and within reach. Seeming only to surround
the subject we have been dealing with, his work
is not devoted to any particular machine. However, it
tactically weaves itself into the proper territory of machines
that, far from exist in isolation, are arranged in
large productive chains, forming a great machine the
artist desecrates.
“To machine”, in its literal sense, would be synonymous
with ‘plotting’, ‘planning’. The playing with words embedded
in the exhibition title otherwise suggests ‘machining’
as machine action, or machinic action. If we propose
to take the word in a non-literal sense – or even in the
sense that preceded its modern use – the technological
machine may perhaps serve as a metaphor for other
processes and triggers formed by integrated parts that
have gained autonomy and thus operate as a machine.
In a sense contrary to the imagery of machine autonomy,
machination may then be thought as a process of
becoming machine or of being like machine; ‘machining’.
Perhaps in this sense, the work of The Goose, along with
the machinations of the other artists, can be understood
as instances of rupture with the supposed closure and
autonomy of technological machines, and also of the
totalizing character of the “machination of the world” 14 ,
opening gaps or reflexive margins to such processes.
Overcoming antagonistic opposition, they express the
constitutive mutuality of the implied terms. They are expressions
of - speculative - ways of machining against
and also, in a way, toward machines and machinations.

In 1928, the German philosopher Walter Benjamin wrote
two short articles after he had intellectually thinned out
“art history”, exhorting the ways artists should turn their
attention to in the following ages. The twentieth century,
the one of working machines, was brutalizing civilization
and then, generously, Benjamin advises us: “For play
and nothing else is the mother of every habit. Eating,
sleeping, getting dressed, washing have to be instilled
into the struggling little brat in a playful way, following
the rhythm of nursery rhymes” 1 . Every artist from this
century onwards should seek, in daily life, strangeness,
gaming, movement, the lost ludus.
When visiting the exhibition “Machinations” at Sesc
Palladium in Belo Horizonte, the first movement we
98
encounter is exactly in this Benjaminian call. At the entrance,
we find ourselves facing the installation “Creed”,
a posthumous tribute to Paulo Henrique “The Goose”
Pessoa, where the widow Birimbica Potter and his
daughter Laura Pessoa, alongside with curator Fred
Paulino, worked in the mimesis of a “hermetic garage”,
a playing workshop by the recently deceased artist. The
Goose had been the perfect embodiment of the “ludology”
preached by Benjamin. In his garage we see spiritualistic
objects, toys and gadgets of all kinds that add
to his belief that “I am not compulsive, I am cumulative,
creative accumulation 2 ”. For is there a more repetitive
act than playing (which never repeats)? The same play
gains different versions and, likewise the artistic process,
gets lost in the maze of movement.
We are currently boxing our playing. Movement is separated
into boxes which follow a large, praised system,
which appropriates of gesture, this stolen from its original
meaning (if this ever existed) and makes us point our
phones everywhere, with kittens, puppies and infantilized
filters, but sneaked in brothel sales of our bodies
and glances. We understand this as technology, but
why, ubiquitously, does such technology become increasingly
childish? Why some do point to technology in
an ironic way, with their lips full of “cuddly capitalism” 3 ?
Art was born taking itself very seriously. The concept
of technology alike. Capitalism is indeed cute, hashtag
#butnottoday. Is playing also a source of violence? 4
When it comes to art as play and art as movement (not
as historical or avant-garde) of creative gestures – those
of machinations – what we saw in the works exhibited
was a very attentive selection of artists with a playful
glance into excess, which we ignore and dismiss with
ordinary ease. All excess is also repetitive, the gesture
of art as a displacer of the technological capital’ signs.
We ever consider, especially today, the digital as a synonym
for technology. However, the analog can be given
to children, who will find it weird and transform it into
another kind of toy: technological surplus or new habit,
free of atavisms? Without judgment, we are enslaved
victims of consumer screens. In an utopia, it is up to artists
to take hold of this excess and turn them into new
plays. By the way, I witnessed fascinated children visiting
the exhibition, full of analogical makeshifts, and this
experience seemed to answer my question about new
and old technologies set before new generations.
In this scenario I invoke the etymology of the word
‘technology’, which in ancient Greek is named Techne
and which also means ART. Despite the term’s coagulation
both for technique and art, in the notion of ancient
Greek art the crisis among two representations
has ever ruled: being realistic or not 5 . This opposition,
which has haunted us for centuries and, in the construction
of art history in particular, has driven us away
from a symbiosis that could only be rescued in the
twentieth century, is now ingrained in everyday life,
invisibly, wickedly. Even in art itself it escapes us, yet
suffering from a historicist revision that frees it from a
western and colonialist perspective.
We play with fire at all times (and unknowingly?), as
the video recorded in 1987 by the Swiss duo Fischli
& Weiss seems to propose, in which they think of the
idea of entropy through a network of traps moved by
a pyrotechnic force. “Through sheer determination
and hours of trial and error, they composed cinematic
sequences in which objects careen into one another,
light each other on fire, and fly from place to
place in an endlessly unraveling chain reaction 6 : this
is how the video “The Way Things Go” is described in
the Guggenheim archive 7 . If we think of the work as a
metaphor for reality, do we perceive the infinite arrow
of time in which we are wrapped, unable to stop, or
are we living in an entropic system, denying it since
post-Socratic times? Realizing reality is illuminating
or pyromaniac. The work doesn’t give answers, but it
opens wide the truth that everything is movement.
Guto Lacaz, one of the most renowned Brazilian artists
in the art and tech field, in his work “Little Great
Actions” (2003) does not use any “machinic” artifice
to talk about perpetual and repetitive movements
that we make in everyday life. In the series, using silkscreen
(an analog technique), the artist screenprints
repetitive movements that we make with technical
apparatuses: rewinding a cassette tape with a pencil;
striking a match. We are eternal children who imitate
the movement of adults, or adults who repeat the
movements learned as children. “Movement is static!
Movement is static because it is the only immutable
thing. (...) The only certainty is that movement, change
and metamorphosis exist. (…) Believe in change. Do not
pin-point anything! Everything about us is movement.
Everything around us changes” 8 , said Jean Tinguely,
well known for creating abstract machines. In Lacaz’s
prints, these small movements around analog objects
change us when we access them, although they being
paralyzed; they ask us if nowadays we access them
more by memory than by body gesture.
In 1955, Hungarian painter and sculptor Vitor Vasarely
(1908-1997) published the “Yellow Manifesto” on the occasion
of his participation, along with other artists such
as Marcel Duchamp, Alexander Calder, Jesús Soto and
Tinguely himself, from the Le Mouvement exhibition
in Paris, emphasizing that art needs to be movement.
The manifesto, inspired by the Bauhaus Constructivists,
postulated that visual kinetics, as proposed by the canon
of Brazilian kinetic art Abraham Palatnik, present in
Machinations, should always be based on the viewer’s
side 9 . In 1968’s “Kinetic C-5”, Palatnik does the opposite
of Guto Lacaz and seems, by the addicted eyes of art
students, to animate the machinic-pictorial conception
of Vasarely and Tinguely. One more experimental play
by the artist who, in 1951, had his “Kinechromatic Apparatus”
- a lightbox with moving colored bulbs - almost
banned of São Paulo Biennial, because the organizers
did not know how to categorize it.
Art cannot be an habit, as Benjamin also claimed. And
we could say to some extent that about this statement
there is a “too late”. If the premise was totally the opposite,
we would not have the mysterious Banksy self-de-
99
structing his millionaire auctioned work 10 . Was it only
irony what was left to us? We give thanks to such art
tricksters, so that the game remains.
Today, surrounded by machines, we watch them having
their subjective surges: disobeying algorithms, like resisting
artists. Or they simply imitate us in our haughty
system, eliminating subjectivities from it. The big machine
algorithm improvises (does it?) in the worst possible
way. In 2018, the story of Google’s racist algorithm
became famous 11 . Some say the next political revolution
will be to control algorithms 12 . Or is it already? Is
it being? The algorithms of the big machine don’t play.
But those of art, yes they do. Sara Lana wraps Ariadne’s
thread 13 with her commissioned installation “Antonyms
Machine”, where “a microphone records spoken sentences
and a system exchanges each of the words
spoken by its antonym.” 14 . Paulo Nenflídio creates, in
“Metacircuit”, a living machine whose algorithm is never
complete, turning sounds into meaningless questions.
Milton Marques, in his Untitled work, shows the perpetual
movement of an artificial landscape, created in a
glass container with an animal skull, filming the one certain
thing in life: the constant movement toward the end.
In “Machinations” we have these artificial organisms, artworks
where the movement asks us all the time to end
utilitarianism in art and in our bodies. There is a space for
immersion within the improvisation of playing, but never
forgetting that, constantly, we are threatened by previous
generations of machines that we face daily, without
even realizing. Are we forever employees of the glance
and of coded surfaces? If we learn by playing, why do
we stop playing for only to make?
We discovered the tricks of the Eternal (praise His
name), we stole his cooking recipes, and now we
cook even better than Him. Are we really in a new
story? How was the short story of Prometheus and
the stolen fire? Perhaps we believe that we are simply
sitting in front of the computer, while we are actually
confined in the Caucasus? And maybe some
birds are already there sharpening their beaks,
preparing to eat our liver. (FLUSSER; 2007; p. 79) 15
We have, with the exhibition, a breath of relief, because we
do not see play as opposed to art, the gesture as opposed
to the glance. At the opening, the interdisciplinary Neville
DÁlmeida and the artist Juliana Porfírio promoted, in collaboration
with a ballet dancer, the performance “Utopic
Body”, an intervention based on a wearable electronic
containing a camera and a display, which shoot and play
people and situations around. In this action, which shifts
the gaze from its function to the body through cameras,
the artists ask us to what extent we are really in control.
And besides, they remind us: have we ever been in control?
Who’s been kidding us all this time?
I do not mean to answer that question. I will never succeed,
and if anyone brings the answer, be suspicious.
The exhibition is this machine that boost questions – an
art mission for some. For me it brought memories of
playing, learning by making. I am sure that, in a context
where machines decide political scenarios, we increasingly
need to stop thinking of technology, and especially
art, as something apart from us. And stop thinking of
them as separate instances in purposes and servitudes.
On the opposite: to have the spirit of The Goose, present
in small portraits brilliantly scattered throughout the
exhibition space, joking through objects that we tend to
see only as excess and repetition, not as an act of creation,
an act of life.

4 In the essay Toys and play: marginal notes on a monumental work, Benjamin briefly
brings back the Freudian theory. “... unlike traumatic nightmares and war neuroses,
which constitute the major realm of the Freudian essay, where compulsive return to
the scenes of danger are pathological symptoms of the subjection of individuals to
what they cannot elaborate and which, therefore, returns without consent, children’s
repetitive play is orchestrated by themselves and becomes a source of pleasure.
Freud notes that they like to hear the same stories, always the same way, to relive that
first reading sensation. But the fun is lost when adults hear the same joke a second
time. Novelty is for them an indispensable condition of enjoyment and delight. Therefore,
leaving childhood behind also means losing the ability to find novelty through
repetition”. (BINES, Rosana Kohl. Childhood ghosts with Boltanski and Benjamin.

Introduction
“[…] Novelty passes,
and what remains is frustration.“
Lucas Bambozzi 1
There was a day when the first human being (maybe
two or three) rubbed pieces of wood with the intention
of making fire. Prior to this, groups of Sapiens worked
the stone and built traps 2 . And meanwhile, the first cinematic
experience may have taken place in some unknown
cave some 30,000 years ago.
Machine, from Latin machina, is a device, a structure or an
assembly that enhances human capabilities and abilities
and has its genealogy intertwined with human history.
In the semantic cloud orbiting the word “machine” we
find other derivations, such as: mechanism, apparatus,
artifact, device, gadget, invention, tool, and instrument.
These words structure the symbolic realm of the “machine”
and work as territorial extensions contaminating
and expanding its domains.
Derived from “machine”, the verb “to machine”, which
names this exhibition, means to plot, warp, betray, conspire,
cause intrigue. Although the machine is commonly
associated with a “good morality,” its genetics reminds
us that we maintain a traumatic relationship with these
artifacts and devices.
Already in ancient times, Egyptians, Greeks, Chinese
and other peoples developed a series of inventions,
mainly mechanical and hydraulic, using levers,
weights and more or less complex multipart mechanisms
3 . The Chinese puppet theater, with its automata,
and Ctesibius’s organ (Bautista Paz et al., 2010, p. 42
and 49) are some examples that art has always been
related to technology.
Taking a big leap in history’s timeline and dribbling the
great inventor of machines Leonardo da Vinci was, the
true revolution of machines will come in the industrial
age. The speed and magnitude of changes in daily life
and the impact on the environment have become definitive.
The legacies: alienation about productive processes
and acceleration of the perception of time.
Another technological revolution is consolidated
throughout the twentieth century, with the progressive
control of electricity. Electronics emerge, and from
them, the augmented and virtual reality machines that
radically transformed our lives. Definitely, where there
are humans, there are machines, plots, intrigues and
conspirations making the world go around.
The Greeks, for example, thought of the universe as a
mechanism of celestial bodies. Later, with the emergence
of modern science, nature 4 and the human body
came to be understood as a machine (composed of
parts with specific functions, “assembled” in order to
work in sync, obeying predictable causal relations).
This mechanistic perspective allowed us to study
the universe and life by reducing phenomena to their
constituent parts. But as technical and technological
advances allowed new measurements of the physical
universe, such a strategy proved insufficient to account
for the true density of things in the world. New
machines emerged and, consequently, new statements,
and vice versa.
The idea that ‘the whole is more than the sum of its
parts’ goes back to Plato and Aristotle and permeates
the history of philosophy 5 , from Marx to systems and
complexity theories. Holistic, dialectical, systemic and
complex thinking offered alternatives to mechanistic
determinism, especially from the second half of the
nineteenth century on. Reducing a phenomenon to its
constituent parts may be useful to some extent, but in
order to really approach the object of study we need
to connect the parts to a complex, undetermined,
emerging entity 6 .
Pause. As various circles of knowledge begin to embrace
complex thinking, state-of-the-art machines and
their artificial intelligence algorithms cloud the landscape
once again.
Recent neuroscience research has verified that our choices
might not be the result of supposed free will, but rather
of a particular ability to recognize patterns (HARARI, 2018).
Supercomputers analyzing big data have been providing
revealing, if not definitive, evidences in this regard. The
Cambridge Analytica scandal is a good example of how
one can remotely manipulate the behavior of large hu-
101
man groups based on their ideologies. The scope of this
social technology (only to name it somehow), in which
supercomputers guide or manipulate people’s lives, is
still restricted to some aspects of human life. It wouldn’t
be unwise to wonder that, as powerful new computers 7
come into circulation and larger volumes of data become
available - from human behavior to climate phenomena -,
we will enter the age of techno-determinism.
Although the curatorial project of the exhibition “Machinations”
is specific, I thought it would be appropriate
to bring this succinct, incomplete, partial and schizophrenic
introductory report, in order to recall human’s
troubled interdependence relationship with machines. I
believe that in one way or another, the topics presented
are tangent to the statements of this show.
Machines and art
While “Machinations” is located within in the macro context
of human-machine relationship, on the other side
it fits into a particular niche in art history, that which involves
the symbolic production with machines, whose
history certainly doesn´t fit into this brief text 8 . Let’s be
reminded that beyond the countless possible associations
between machines and art 9 , it won´t be until the
twentieth century this realm would gain new status.
Beyond instrumental bias, machines are gradually considered
works of art 10 . From Tinguely’s self-destructive
contraptions to Theo Jansen’s automata, from Wim Delvoye’s
machines simulating digestive system to Refik
Anadol’s algorithmic artificial intelligence animations,
we are faced with a particular epistemological, logical,
ethical and aesthetic field, which had been exemplarily
summarized by Peter Weibel based on the idea of
“performative turning” 11 : “Classical art was about the
behaviour of form, even the form of things, and today
it’s about the form of behaviour. […] it’s not about the creation
of things anymore, it’s about the creation of relations,
what we do with things”. 12
Another issue to bear in mind is that art and culture are,
in general, constantly crossed by the clash between
progress and tradition, in which, without a doubt, the machine
plays a central role. Baudelaire’s flaneur revolts at
the speed of the city of light. The “Arts and Crafts” movement
seeks to counteract industrial design. “Machinations”
puts its pillars down in this swampy terrain, standing
critically against status quo positivism. This mainly
because its curator’s Fred Paulino (alongside with Paulo
Henrique Pessoa - the “Goose”, and Lucas Mafra) is one
of the founders of Gambiologia, a movement of resistance
to a certain idea of flattening progress that erases
the past, wastes resources, spreads false promises, excludes
margins and programs obsolescence. One fact
102
catching the eye and that can be considered a statement
is that, with the exception of Sara Lana’s piece,
there are no interactive artworks in “Machinations.”
And it is precisely Sara´s “Antonyms machine” that reveals
the techno-assistentialist tendency of our time, in
which even the use of toilet paper is assisted by sensors
and motors. This artwork is composed by a jumble
of tube TV sets, on whose screens we see oscillating
wave designs and static electricity variations. There is
also a microphone that triggered by visitors initiates a
translation system, which analyzes the speech and answer
with a contrary sentence than of that heard by it. In
the age of superintelligent machines and clever artificial
intelligence algorithms, noise persists in mediating the
human-machine relationship. Sara explores, in an extremely
poetic way, what is lost in the process: the residues,
the inaccurate character of the language, the imprecision
of the machine, the difference in repertoires.
In this sense, Zaven Paré’s “Tribute to Chocolate Grinder
Repairers,” in which 180 plastic forearms revolve around
its own axis, represents, in my point of view, a counterpoint
to the “ode to click” in which contemporary society
has become. Although the artist had been inspired
by Leonardo da Vinci’s biomechanical studies and Duchamp’s
enigmatic machines, in our current context
this artwork have new readings. There is an effort being
made, cyclically and repetitively, that could cause me a
contemplative, meditative, or Zen experience, but that
gives me a double anguish. On the one hand, it makes
me think of consumer society and its aggressive marketing
techniques: It’s as if these 180 forearms were trying
to convince me to be part of the system, probably
showing me some amazing product that I couldn’t live
without. On the other hand, I feel anguish to realize they
don´t leave their places. The “motor age” crowd, hostage
to the cognitive capitalism plots, as in the blindness of
social networks bubbles.
File and memory
Paulo Henrique Pessoa, the “Goose”, had a private cabinet
of curiosities and it is with it he is generously represented
in the exhibition. “Creed” is a site-specific installation
of psychedelic collecting. Goose was a compulsive
collector of images and all sorts of objects, preferably
those able to be unusually reused. Among displayed
items is the helmet designed in partnership with Paulino
and Mafra for the former Arte.mov (International Festival
for Mobile Media Art) in Belo Horizonte. The birth of this
analogic object/gadget in such a particular setting - a
festival dedicated to the most avant-garde technologies,
bears an extra symbolic and affective value, since
it had led to the founding of Gambiologia.
I recently had the opportunity to visit the Fundação Casa
Grande — Memorial do Homem Kariri 13 , in Nova Olinda,
Ceará. Among various social, educational and heritage
protection activities promoted by the institution, the
project of Organic Museums particularly caught my attention.
Designed by Alemberg Quindins and his team,
they are museums that seek to rescue masters of local
culture when they are still alive and they are set up in the
honorees’ houses. Goose´s installation made me think
about this unofficial collective memory hidden in every
house and every garage, and which is often hard for us
to discover and value.
Guto Lacaz’s participation in the exhibition points to another
type of memory, which is related to the body. The
sequence of images suggests instructions for performing
everyday activities, such as lighting a match, opening
a package of super glue, unrolling a plastic food
wrap, extracting a print from a Polaroid camera, using
a level tool, and rewinding a cassette tape. In fact, none
of these actions would need instruction for generations
born in the 1970s and 1980s. Lacaz’s ironic commentary,
being him an acute graphic chronicler of our time, is
meant to reveal, on the one hand, the cyclical condition
of time, and on the other how much our body can be
shaped by technology. Today, when cassettes and Polaroids
are back on the scene and repairing equipment
can be more expensive than buying a new one, Lacaz’s
images take on new meaning. In common sense, time
would be represented by a continuous line where the
past would be on the left, the future on the right, and
the present somewhere in between. The story is much
more capricious. Like time, it is illusion, it accelerates,
slows and loops at the most unexpected moment.
In this nucleus, it is also worth talking again about Zaven
Paré, another compulsive collector of objects and images.
He presents the four-part site-specific installation
“ZP Occupation 3.0”. In the first, he brings a series of assemblages
that took me to the Afro-Brazilian imaginary:
“pure coincidence”, according to the artist. The second
part is a wall composed of randomly arranged circular
objects, which looks like the transposition of the artist’s
studio into the exhibition room. Completing the work is
a showcase of relics and a weird (or surrealistic?) machine
that keeps a ping-pong ball floating in the air, an
installation referring to “Locus Solus”, the work of French
writer and poet Raymond Russel.
As in Goose’s work, there is a disruptive look at everyday
life, the chronology of time, the essence of things. An
attempt to reorganize the world into arrangements that
seem to rescue subjectivity and human scale, beauty
and poetry hidden in banal things.
Abstraction and movement
Abraham Palatnik takes part in the exhibition with “Kinetic
Object C-5” and a collection of sketches and notebooks.
His production falls within the scope of Brazilian abstractionism,
concretism and neo-concretism and their Latin
American variations exemplified in the works of Jesus
Rafael Soto, Carlos Cruz Diez and Julio Le Parc. Palatnik’s
work has already been studied and reviewed in exhaustion
14 and is well known for introducing three-dimensionality
into the pictorial object, for the physical exploration
of the light phenomenon and for the insertion of movement.
The highlight in “Machinations” is the inclusion of
Palatnik’s sketches and annotations that, in the context
of the exhibition, explain the forms of artistic making that
emerge when it meets the artworks’ technologies of
present time. Sketching and scribbling give way to plans,
calculations, project. Not that this is new in the field of
art, but the blurring of boundaries between disciplines is
consolidated in the twentieth century, and the formation
of transdisciplinary teams becomes a necessity. By diving
into other fields, the artist adheres to new techniques
and ways of thinking, documenting and designing close
to engineering and science.
Daniel Herthel’s work updates and shifts an almost endangered
craft, marquetry, a technique derived from woodwork
and goldsmithing, traditionally used in the manufacture
of furniture, props and ornaments. Because the
pieces are installed on the wall, it is inevitable to think of
them in their relationship with painting. Whether due to the
characteristic of the technique, somewhat limited in the
expression of detail, or the themes chosen by the author
- a synthesizer, for example -, they cause some strangeness.
Materialized anachronism of a past time memory.
Xande Perocco’s mural, based on the typography created
by him as the logo of the exhibition, inspires a journey
through time. When applied to a print or computer
screen, the typology instantly refers to the aesthetics
of contemporary computer-aided graphic design. But
when transformed into a mural, it refers to the origin of
design and propaganda in Russian constructivism. It is
in this communicational ambivalence that the work expands
itself in the context of the exhibition, creating a
gap between the idea of progress and tradition.
Contraptions and makeshifts
Paulo Nenflídio’s production is established on the border
between art and life. He is a machine craftsman, an
inventor artist, a scientist poet. In his works, he explores
the most diverse materials and phenomena, in order to
build what he calls inventions, unusual, playful and interactive
objects, most of the time, with sound.
103
The “Instruments to calculate horizon” series, which
he calls sculptures, are actually three fully functional
levels. One of them features a technical innovation: a
reduction mechanism that allows greater accuracy in
measurements. Moved by generosity and the desire to
confuse the boundaries of art, Nenflídio presented a
worker who worked on the renovation of his house with
one of these sculptures.
“Metacircuit n2”, also of his own, is a sound object, a
machine/instrument with its viscera exposed that, before
the presence of the visitor, pronounces a monologue
about its own machinic nature. Nenflidio’s works
initially seduce us by the eccentricity and exoticism of
his assemblies, but in a second instance, we are surprised
by the fact that it leaves bare its very essence,
mediating the experience of the sensitive in a subtle
and pleasant way.
What did Azucena Losana want to tell us with her analog
image sequences produced by precarious slide
projectors made out of cardboard and discarded components?
Never before so many imaging and projection
devices have been available as today, and we have never
produced so many images in a single day. We have
equipment that can exceed 50 megapixels of resolution
and shoot up to 8k, and telescopes that can see the
ends of the universe. From a positivist perspective, we
might think that all this paraphernalia would be available
to a communication model in which information
flows like the waters of a river and mankind sails in “fair
winds and following seas“. But the effect seems to be
just the opposite. The uncontrolled exposure to such
technologies has made evident our deficiencies and
weaknesses as individuals and as a collective. It is in this
gap that the artist calls us to reflect on the urgent need
to rethink our relationship with technological devices –
especially those of image production – in order to think
of strategies that allow us to circumvent the enchantment
of the brave new world. Only in this way can we
create identity and belonging in a system that exploits
our weaknesses.
Mauricio Zelada’s “Oracle” is a real contraption. Mixed
sculpture, musical instrument and lamp, it resembles a
spaceship about to take off. The resulting sound from
the machining of its components is a drone that can
point both to the background radiation of the universe
as to the impertinent roar of engines producing 24/7. Its
slender figure, while static, embodies the tension and
power of a possible takeoff, an extraordinary allegory of
contemporary conflicts.
Poetics of Strangeness
Milton Marques’ poetics always seemed disturbing to
me. Not because it’s perverse or uncomfortable, but
because it’s unclassifiable. With his particular methodology
of subverting the original, being it a motor, a camera,
or a printer, he creates systems whose meaning escapes
our immediate experience.
By seeing unusual possibilities in sets designed with everyday
elements, Marques is able to create visualities,
sounds and atmospheres to which we have no immediate
reference. As in Nenflídio’s works, in the search for
logic that illuminates the meaning of his propositions, we
are seldom suspended for a moment in an ambiguous
and destabilizing symbolic limbo though it’s extremely
poetic and suggestive.
Marques’ machines produce boucles and recurrences,
but the artist’s know-how in their design makes neither
loop equal to the other. This inevitably leads us to think
about time and its pitfalls. Such is the case with the
“Untitled” work in which we see an animal skull turning
among grains of sand. The ephemeral time of life contrasted
with the geological time of the mineral. A potent
metaphor of nature’s cycles. But in this case, the driving
force of such a routine is a printer motor, placing the human
being in the role of the creator.
In the other piece by this artist, also untitled, we see an
audiovisual contraption whose lens oscillates between
two focal points. At the end of the loop, you can read
the phrases “critical point where it no longer responds”
and “on the hardest days.” A tangle of hair complements
both images. Despite decades of machine art history,
Milton’s work points to the untapped frontiers of the so
called obsolete equipment.
The man and the machine, utopia or dystopia?
The inclusion of the video “The Way Things Go” by Fischli
and Weiss introduces, if not a dystopian perspective, a destabilizing
component in our course. In this masterpiece
of the Swiss duo, we see a clumsy contraption in which
weird and unlikely events follow one another in a long
take which isn’t it (the images were shot during two years).
In the end, there is no moral of the story. The energy expended
fades into the air when a handful of dry ice falls
into a basin of water. In my view, this is the most beautiful
parody of man’s relationship with the machine. Without
optimism or pessimism, it presents things as they really
are. Hits, mistakes, doubt, naivete, malice, all clear and
obvious, causal. Each has its own ethics.
104
Plotting
I left the work of Motta & Lima to the end, as it materializes
the expansive and liberating potential that can
emerge from man’s encounter with the machine.
The image of a hummingbird in flight, projected on
the blades of a fan, shows an optical phenomenon
that reveals the nature of light. Beyond the aesthetic
domains of art, we might think that we are facing
a knowledge device containing key elements that allow
us to decode reality and to order the world around
(GRAU and VEIGL, 2011, p. 5).
Two accurate curatorship choices strengthen the exhibition:
the inclusion of the Kallpp group’s audiovisual
performance “Pareidolia” and the museography. Kallpp
artists create and improvise with their own synthesizers.
During the performance, they open the devices, making
the sensors, mechanisms and flows explicit so demystifying
the “black box”. In the symbolic field, they provoke
us to make sense of unusual sounds and, like other
works in the exhibition, explore the poetry of everyday
life. The museography is simple but straightforward. A
maze made of wire mesh walls resembling a workshop,
factory or supply store environment.
Finally, reinforcing the idea that this text, rather than
explaining such dense issues, is intended to be a trigger
of ideas, and conscious of having used the word
machine more than 40 times, I would like to make one
last reflection.
Faced with the constant virtualization of the world,
“Machinations” is a manifesto in favor of craft, materiality
of things, economy of resources, individual and collective
creativity, conscious acting and the art of encounter.
It is also a reminder of how good it is to get lost in order
to find yourself renewed in the process. “Machinations”
is a warning that calls us to keep ways of being alive in
the world that are in danger of extinction. After all, not
everything that shines is gold, “novelty passes, and what
remains is frustration.”

ARTISTS / ARTWORKS / PERFORMANCES
ABRAHAM PALATNIK
He was born in Natal (Brazil) in 1928. He lived and
worked mostly in Rio, where he passed away in 2020.
He was a pioneer and the most seminal figure of
Brazilian kinetic, optical and tech art. His work has
been shown in several exhibitions internationally, including
eight editions of the São Paulo Biennial, Brazil
(1951-1969) and the 32nd La Biennale di Venezia, Italy
(1964). His work is part of important institutional collections,
such as: Rio de Janeiro Museum of Modern Art
(MAM-Rio); São Paulo Museum of Modern Art (MAM-
SP); Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium; and The
Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), New York, USA.
Kinetic Object C-5

Kinetic Object K-07
Electromechanical sculpture. 50 x 150 x 50 cm. 1968
COURTESY: Sesc Art Collection
Kinetic Objects, together with Kinechromatic Apparatus
and Ludic Objects series, integrate the most renowned creative
period of the artist, one of the pioneers of Brazilian and
world kinetic art. Through minimalist color charts, sophisticated
compositions and intentionally exposed mechanical
systems, Palatnik proposes a three-dimensionalization of
abstract painting in motion, with delicacy and great visual
appeal. His vigorous artistic production has for decades integrated
sculpture, drawing, technology, physics and design.
Notebooks
Sketches on paper. Variable dimensions. n.d.
Rare collection of Palatnik original documents, consisting
of technical drawings and patent illustrations made by him
in Israel and Brazil in the 1940s and 1950s. The set includes
sketches of Kinetic Objects, some of which are exhibited in
the editions of “Machinations.”
ARMATOST
Colombian collective formed by Julián Conde “Kilelé”
(visual artist and musician) and Julie Mart (journalist
and set designer). Their work is developed from
everyday objects, reuse of materials and gambiologia,
under the premise of “urban archeology” in material
culture. They held individual exhibitions such as
“Cacharraçoes” at MAT, Colombia (2018) and joined
collective exhibitions such as “Maquinations” at Sesc
Palladium, in Belo Horizonte, Brazil (2018). They
were awarded multiple grants in Colombia. They are
currently working on the UN-FIXED project, a performance
that incorporates sculpture, installation
and fashion.
Kick (La Patadita)
Mechanical sculpture. 100 x 150 x 200 cm. 2018
Interactive sculpture created from the reuse of mechanical
industrial objects, in a Colombian “gambiological” style. The
piece is a dysfunctional humanoid robot made using scrap,
which lends itself to offering only a kick aimed at the interacting-spectator
himself. The sudden mechanical “selfie”
kick irreverently denotes the need for other modes of existence
- and resistance - in everyday life.
AZUCENA LOSANA*
She was born in Mexico City (1977). She lives and
works in Buenos Aires. Her work comprises experimental
cinema, installations and video. She conducts
TAPP project (“Precarious Projectors Workshop”) in
partnership with Carolina Andreetti. Some prizes
she got include 3rd place in the Mamba Telefonica
New Technologies Award (2009), exchange scholarship
from the University of São Paulo / UNA (2015),
honorable mention at the Salón Nacional de las Artes
de Argentina (2016) and the individual creation grant
from the Fondo Nacional de las Artes of Argentina and
the National System of Creators FONCA Mexico (2017).

Marquetry made with natural wood veneers and shellac
over naval plywood. 48 x 48 cm / each. 2018
Marquetry, an old and traditional technique of composing
drawings with different wood cut-outs veneers, is revisited
in Daniel ‘s work in dialogue with his creative universe of mechanical
inventions, drawing and his constant research on
woodwork. The dimension of time is very present as well as
metaphysical issues, the notion of values and the recognition
of a space and his way of working.
GANSO - PAULO HENRIQUE PESSOA
He was born in Martinópolis, Brazil (1955) and lived
most of his life in Belo Horizonte, where he passed
away in 2018, shortly after the opening of the first edition
of “Maquinações” in Rio de Janeiro. With a background
in industrial design, during his life he worked
with design in print, fashion, TV and cinema. He was
especially recognized for his work in lighting design
using antiques and reused materials. He conceived
and produced the concept space “Bar do Ganso”,
at Instituto Inhotim (Brazil), in permanent exhibition.
He was one of the founders of Gambiologia Collective.
Creed
Site specific installation of psychedelic collecting.
Variable dimensions. 2018
The restless and irreverent Goose has been a reference character
in art and in the night of Belo Horizonte since the 1970s, participating
in several experimental art scenes in the areas of scenography,
fashion, illustration, graphic design and art direction
for film and TV. He was a compulsive collector of objects and images.
In his later years, he received special recognition as one of
the founders of the Gambiologia project and, mainly, as a product
designer and lighting artist, having conceived the “Bar do Ganso”
concept space in Inhotim, which remains there. “Creed” is a
seminal installation of “psychedelic collecting” (as coined by the
artist himself) launched as a work-in-progress at the first edition
of “Machinations” in Rio de Janeiro in June 2018, a few days before
the artist passed away. The original installation was reproduced
in different ways in later editions of “Machinations,” always
under the coordination of his daughter Laura Potter.
GUTO LACAZ
He was born in São Paulo (1948). He is an architect and
visual artist. He explores the technological possibilities
in art and consumption with humor and surprise.
As a graphic designer, he creates logos, books, magazines,
catalogs, posters, illustrations and exhibitions.
He received the awards: Unusual Object, Guggenheim
Scholarship, APCA Graphic Work, APCA Borders of
Architecture, April Journalism and Graphic Excellence
Award. He has published the books “Desculpe a letra”,
“Gráfica”, “omemhobjeto” e “80 desenhos”, among others.

Screen printing on paper. • 100 x 70 cm / each. 2003
This set of prints is part of an extensive series by the artist.
The illustrations suggest “instruction manuals” of simple
everyday actions of extreme utility. A graphic satire about
the routine and complexity of technical apparatus, exploring
the extent to which man’s action in dealing with industrial objects
around melts into pure intuition.

KALLPP
Sound art trio formed by Marcelo Kraiser, Rafael
Carneiro and Frederico Melo. Their work wander between
ambient music and noise art, between melodic
sounds and random atonality, as well as the use of voice
with emphasis on improvisation. The trio researches
theoretical and technical aspects of sound and their
interaction with space, performance and image, using
especially electronic and electroacoustic instruments.
Pareidolia
Sound performance. 2019
It is an improvised performance made up of four distinct
planes that reverberate and interact with each other: body,
sound, light and thought. Each leads to developments in
processes that feedback actions and concepts such as visual,
sound and moving body landscapes. Due to the absence
of hierarchies, we have captures that admit error, chance,
and their balanced and unbalanced risks, resonating with fog
images, dusty images, atmospheric sounds, noise. Fleeting
mixtures of bodies that crystallize and dissolve into materials
that quiver, strain, stretch, compress, dilate, breathe, illuminate
and meet electronic and electroacoustic sounds.

MAURIZIO ZELADA
He was born in São Paulo (1963), where he lives and
works. He’s been interested in mechanisms and electronics
since childhood. He studied architecture, but
eventually replaced the drawing board and office for
the workbench and the workshop. He uses both earliest
mechanisms as well as sophisticated microprocessors
and sensors to propose artworks that respond to stimuli,
with behavior not always predictable. The interaction
with the public and the autonomy of the work are strong
presences in his works. In addition to his own production,
he develops and implement technical solutions for
other artists.
Oracle
Steel sculpture, electronics, laser and smoke.
Variable dimensions. 2019
Electronic sculpture formed by light, sound and air. The work
is a machine composed of five interrelated modules, which
produce and consume information translated into sounds.
In the Oracle, a green laser goes through an intermittent
and chaotic column of smoke. The generated light activates
sensors whose continuous variation feeds processors that
synthesize a sound flow in real time.
Discorsi
Set of electromechanical sculptures.
Variable dimensions. 2018
“I discorsi li porta via il vento”. If conversations are discarded
by wind, on the other hand, they are wind. This installation
uses moving airflows to activate electronic and mechanical
sensors, just as eardrums are stimulated with sound. The
work consists of modular machines that talk like people:
they bring air waves to the membranes of the other machines,
which in turn process and emit more air waves that
sensitize other membranes, and so on, in a cyclic chain. The
content of conversations is not accessible to us.

MILTON MARQUES
He was born in Brasilia (1971), where he lives and works.
His work has as its starting point the use of unused
machines and technological devices, devoid of their
original function and displaced from everyday use.
So they resurface as part of singular mechanisms of
construction of moving images.

15 x 15 x 25 cm. 2012
Milton Marques’ poetic projection machines are gadgets created
from re-functionalized simple technologies: low-tech
optical and mechanical systems with high sensorial impact.
His work is formed from deconstructions that evidence
social dynamics and a policy of technical image. In the pieces
presented in “Machinations”, the artist develops mechanical
loop systems: in one of them, the camera focus in pointed
to a rotating animal skull that, when projected, is abstracted
in sand; in the other, he develops a precarious projector that
zoom human hair over written sentences, in a composition
that makes us remember the Brazilian national flag.
MOTTA & LIMA
The partnership of Gisela Motta and Leandro Lima, both
born in São Paulo in 1976, began in the late 1990s. Since
then, they have used various languages such as video,
object creation and makeshifts, employing standards,
measures, structures and their variations in order to create
highly constructed situations. In these environments,
natural, mathematical and artificial elements emulate
organic behavior, synthesize natural phenomena,
and create certain ambiguity, despite their apparent
objectivity. They precisely explore the ambivalent region
between the synthetic of the natural and the natural of
the synthetic.
Hummingbird
Video installation with single chip DLP projector, tripods,
DC motor and propellers. Variable dimensions. 2013
Two tripods support a projector and a motor that rotates
propellers of irregular shapes, on which is projected the
animation of a hummingbird. The propellers fragment the
projection in several colors, as on a Newton disc in reverse.
One sees the image of a bird the wings are confused with
the propellers; their color travels through all the colors of the
moving spectrum, once the propeller speed is higher than
the projector’s frequency.
PAULO NENFLÍDIO
He’s got a BA from ECA - USP and a degree in electronics
from ETE Lauro Gomes. His production is composed
by sculptures, installations, objects, instruments and
drawings. Sound, electronics, movement, construction,
invention, randomness, physics, control, automation
and makeshifts are also frequent in his works, which
look like animals, musical instruments or science fiction
machines. In 2011, he received the CNI SESI Marcantonio
Vilaça Visual Arts Award and, in 2013, the Funarte Marcantonio
Vilaça Award. In 2017, he exhibited in BienalSur.

The work is metalinguistic: the phrases generated
by the object explain the operation of the circuit itself, in an
uncomfortable process of humanization of the machine.

PETER FISCHLI & DAVID WEISS
Fischli was born in 1952 and Weiss was born in 1946,
both in Zurich. They began to collaborate in 1979.
Resisting any specific style, medium, or material, their
work include photographs, videos, slide projections,
films, books, sculptures and multimedia installations.
Their production explores the poetics of banality — the
sublimity of the objects and events constituting everyday
life. They had solo exhibitions at Center Georges
Pompidou, Paris (1992) and Tate Modern, London
(2006–07), among others. In 1995 and 2003, they represented
Switzerland in the Venice Biennale, receiving
the Leone d’Oro award. Their work also appeared in
Documenta, Kassel, Germany (1987, 1997), and at the
Guggenheim Museum (2002–03-04). Weiss died in
2012 in Zurich, where Fischli continues to live and work.
The Way Things Go
Video. Color, 30’’, Stereo. 1987
Already a classic in video art, it features 30 minutes of documentation
of a “Rube Goldberg Machine” built from precarious
objects and structures which are sequentially activated, in
109
an empty warehouse. In addition to the numerous mechanical
interactions between the components of this micro-city installation,
chemical reactions and pyrotechnics are also used
as triggers. Through sheer determination and hours of trial and
error, the artists have created film sequences in which materials
intertwine, ignite in flames and fly from place to place in a
finite unraveled chain reaction. Objects, imminently collapsing,
seem to move on their own accord, free from their usual
functions and reveling in the pleasure of their misbehavior.
SARA LANA
She has had her academic career traced in mathematics,
coding and engineering schools. Since 2007 she
develops projects permeated by sound, art and technology.
In general, her work is oriented to the research
and development of technological paraphernalia,
experimenting with different approaches to digital
interfaces and analog devices. She has participated in
several residences and her works have been presented
in Brazil, Chile, Mexico, Spain and France.

Interactive installation that uses electronics, coding and
reused objects to respond to speech in an unusual way.
The machine “listens” to sentences spoken by the public in a
microphone and, using open source translation libraries and
computational voice, generates counter phrases. The inaccuracy
of the system, in addition to its playfulness, highlights
the constant failures of even the most complex technological
systems. In version 2.0, hacked tube TVs emit light signals
in sync with the sound response.
XANDE PEROCCO
Designer, artist and illustrator. He lives and works in Belo
Horizonte, Brazil. Since the 2000s, he has been integrating
initiatives in street art and print. He was one of the
founders of Azucrina Collective. He is the art director of
prominent projects in the Brazilian cultural scene, such
as Cura (Urban Art Circuit) and Gambiologia.

Site-specified installation. Collecting, sculptures and electromechanical
object. Variable dimensions. 2018/2019
Installation composed of four parts: a set of assemblages of
materials collected from different origins, which are sources
of inspiration for the artist; a showcase of relics; a shelf of
totemic figures for memory; and an in situ sculpture that
refers to “Locus Solus”, by Raymond Roussel.
Tribute to chocolate grinder repairers
Kinetic sculpture. 180 x 180 x 180 cm. 2017
Kinetic sculpture composed of 180 forearms in a smooth
rotating motion, like rays of a black star. Each hand holds a
gear, lost in the race of time. The 720 electrical connections
of the silent mechanical assembly form the nucleus of this
project of celestial body. The work is an allegory dedicated
to pronossupination, a movement that consists of the rotation
of the forearm and was the most complete study of biomechanism
in Leonardo da Vinci’s work, present in his notes
on morphology and in the pointing finger of his paintings’
characters. The title of the work refers to Marcel Duchamp’s
“Broyeuse de chocolat” (1914), a machine also replicated
in his great work “La Mariée mise à nu par ses celibataires,
même” (1915-1923). “Tribute to chocolate grinder repairers”
evokes the maintenance work of this type of machine, for the
greater pleasure of mechanics and even celibates, among
others. Besides the chocolate lovers, specially.
