Ford Capri MkI

Adorable Imperfection

PROLOGUE

Hi there!

It's always a pleasure to welcome a fella on

board, because apparently we're sharing the

same passion. Whatever your age, gender or

profession is, wherever you live or whatever

car you drive, we already have at least one

thing in common. That's a good start. I wish this

magazine could provide direct backandforth

communication 'cause I bet we all could tell

some hot carrelated stories sitting by a

Cosmo. But nevermind, there are other places

available to do that and maybe we'll meet on

one of them. Untill then, let me start first.

I'm just a normal car enthusiastic guy in his late

20s from Hungary with a lifetime passion

towards modded cars and motorsports. And a

very lucky one, gotta tell. Looking back to my

childhood, I never had to contemplate for a

single second about what do I want to be when

I grow up. I managed to manifest my childhood

dream when I became a graduated car

mechanic. Probably this is gonna take its

blessingkindoftoll on the rest on my life.

Even my hobbies are related to it. I started

blogging about cars in November 2015 with

some minor, private successes but I gotta admit

that car magazines impress me more despite

they're getting to be oldfashioned rapidly

these days. I spent the majority of my pocket

money to car magazines when I was a kid,

daydreaming over them that I might have my

own mag when I grow up. Then boom, 14 years

passed and I made issue #0 in March 2019 and

the feedbacks were surprisingly blessing so I

thought it might be a cool side project to

continue. This is what you see happening right

now.

The Second Stage.

Most of the content in this magazine already

had published in my blog both in English and

Hungarian language so we can call this thing

some kind of an anthology but there are some

freshly written debutants as well. Of course,

future plans include 100% exclusive magazine

content with car features, event reports,

motorsport analysises, tech posts and whatever

untill it's hot and car related. Features are going

to be the core of this magazine for sure, 'cos I'm

really eager to show the magnificent diversity

of car culture, whether it's about JDMs, Euros,

Yankee muscles, tuned show cars, dropped rats,

roaring track cars, or silent sleepers. We are

unique and still the same. And it's awesome.

Everyone has to see that.

Oh, a few words about the language... well,

been learning English for like two decades, but

since it's not my mother tongue I use 24/7, it's

prone to show some kinks here and there. I'm

the CEO/writer/manager/editor/janitor/lawn

mower/sandwich maker in this project and so

the proofreader in one person. So dear native

speakers: sorry for any grammatic mistakes in

advance.

Chances are that there are better magazines

outside even on this amateur level. I'm aware

there's still plenty to learn. But writing brings

me joy. And I want to share it with you by

making this magazine. As I wrote on the front

page, 'Driven with peculiar style, fueled with

gigantic love'. I'm on it to keep myself to this

standard. Hope you're gonna enjoy it as much

as I enojoyed making it.

Wishing all of you a Merry Christmas, Happy

New Year and all the best for 2021. Take care

and stay safe!

FEATURE // FORD CAPRI MK1 (1969)

ADORABLE

Words by Roland Márk Nagy // Photos by Alberto Panadero Palacios

IMPERFECTION

 6

As photo manipulation gave a rise to the numbers in alleged UFOobservations,

social media similarly gave a major tailwind among many

to old, touchy stories of barn find cars. Barnfinds have actually become

some sorta reunboxings for car guys. And it's forgivable if there are some

blind spots in the background history as it winds back. Not in this case

though,'cos Alberto and his Ford Capri each have an adventurous

background story till these two met.

 7

A

lberto Panadero Palacios was given a

strong bond towards cars since the

beginning, as his childhood was mostly spent

among cars in his father's FiatLancia

dealership in Spain, where he saw some real

gems like Ferraris, Porsches, and BMWs as

well.

Still, Alberto chose to work in the media

growing up. He traveled the world around and

seen its both edges; from nice, exotic places to

conflicted areas, and time to time cars were

involved in his job too.

He was in the first Spanish TV crew to take

footage inside the Ferrari's and Lambo's

factories in Italy, and took part in some mad

projects as well. Like when he duelled a

Eurofighter Typhoon multirole fighter with a

Audi R8 on the air base of Albacete, and also

made content for the famous YouTube channel

Petrolicious. He even lived in Germany for a

while in his Volkswagen Campervan just to

stay the closest possible to his wife. How sweet

and cool is that!

 8

It was a light October day as the sun mildly

shined on the Capri's matte black bonnet when

she first left the walls of the factory in Cologne

in 1969. She was bought by a Spanish

gentleman to have some everyday wheels

moving to Switzerland, and to ride back to

Spain sometimes for some holiday visits and

fam reunions. At least the first years of the

Capri's life were something like that untill this

caballero passed it on to his son in the early

80s. Like father, unlike son 'cos this young

hombre apparently wasn't a delicate driver like

his old man was, and his reckless redlinings

resulted two burned head gaskets in a short

period of time. Sure daddy was not happy

about this so he eventually teached him a

lesson by taking the Capri back. Then bought

him brandnew Seat Panda instead. That's a

peculiar form of punishment, gotta tell...

But in retrospect, it was a wise decision. At least

the Capri got saved and returned back to his

old, calm ennui'd rest. The car got to a farm.

Then into a barn.

Then under dust.

 9

 10

So yeah, Alberto fortunately never lost

his interest towards cars entirely. He's

been working on cars as a hobby since

2014 and he collected a decent lineup at

home during the years: seven cars and

one moped, like a Ford F350, and an

original Land Rover Series 1 there are

good odds anyway that Alberto is

among the most enthusiastic Land Rover

fans in the world.

Then that seven turned eight when one

day he heard about a firstgen Capri

lying around on a nearby farm. Alberto

went, saw and faced a onetime deal.

"Okay, it has to be mine."

said Alberto muted in that barn, staring

at that Caprishaped 36yearold pile of

dust. Her brakes got totally stuck during

the last three and a half decades so it

was pulled out to the sunshine again by

a tractor.

Nevertheless the car was in quite an

okay shape, partly thanks to the

Southern climate as well, which was

merciful to the body.

The deal was made, work could start,

and Alberto put all his free time effort

into the Capri. Containing of course a

head gasket replacement, following with

the Ford Scorpio valves made in Madrid,

got a new alternator and a custombuilt

exhaustsystem, working paralelly with

the body. The interior, the brakes and

the rear axle were completely rebuilt.

Even though she doesn't have her fancy

untouched vibe anymore, this car is very

close to the factory state. And this is

actually true to the matte black bonnet

and the red leather interior 'cos bothl of

them are stock features right from the

factory. The alcantaracovered

dashboard just seems so, because that

was actually made by Alberto. The car

was made in Cologne, hence there is a

1.7liter V4 Ford Taunus engine inside.

Inline4 Kent engines were only built in

in the UK.

 11

Despite Capris have already reached

some cult status by now, it was really

hard to find proper parts for the car. Still

if you compare Alberto's particular

project to similar ones, Alberto wins the

contest big time, since this car got

finished in just five months. Gotta add

that some days Alberto spent like 16

hours working on the car. It's an

extremely tense working pace, but

looking at the final result, it's not bad

from a 50yearold lady.

Personally I think that this imperfect,

slightlyused but mehcanically flawless

shape fits it much better. And anyways,

there are more than enough sheltered

oldtimer treasures. If this car was one of

those ones, well that would be a real

waste. At least she does some occasional

workout when Alberto takes her to the

local events. But maybe they'll go on

seperate ways shortly, as Alberto's about

to sell the Capri to finance his next

project. Hoping that'll deserve a feature

too.•

Mm

L.

I

t's quite a sure thing that 2020 is

going to be a memorable year for

literally all of us though not the way we

actually wanted it. Concerning car

shows, events got cancelled or

postponed worldwide because of the

COVID19 pandemic, and this year's

SEMA Show was not an exception among

them either. Sadly but understandably

we all have come to accept by now that

last year's has remained as the most

recent SEMA Show at least untill next

year (fingers crossed).

Which means that it's still not too late to

scroll through the pictures of the 2019

SEMA show to keep up our spirits.

Luckily we have Antonio de la Hoz and

Dylan Young to save our souls. While

most of us were whinging at home, the

guys took a visit on last year's show.

 14

PoAntilH// Dl Yn

And meanwhile they were probably

holding each other's jaws cruising

around the venue, they took a few

dozens of photos as well. Many thanks

guys for sharing them with us!

Anyway there were a bunch of mad,

wild, cool and clean stuff again to place

our stares and to trigger a "musthave"

effect inside our head. From ratstyle hot

rods to widebody'd JDMs, a whole range

of different styles got together to

conquer in the Las Vegas Convention

Center for four days. No matter how

weird or sophisticatied taste you might

have, it's 99,9% of chance that there is a

corner where you will find something

here that winds up your clock. The next

few pages are about to prove it.

Maximum visual content, minimum

talking. Grab a beer and Enjoy! •

Supra A90s were highly

represented by multiple

exhibitors.

The VIP of the show: An original 1979

NFS: Underground intensifies. Honda brought a

F&Fstyle 1999 Civic Si to make some old gaming

memories vivid. The company celebrated their

60th year of presence on the US market.

 17

This is just a minor taste of Toyo Tires'

treadpass but they're still able to steal the

show even on these two pages, not only

they did on SEMA. They dressed those

wellknown Proxes R888s into some

insanely mad and wide wheels. And we

haven't said a single word about the body

kits, not even popped up any bonnets

yet... apart from that Hakosuka and that

carbed AE86 Levin.

unlocked the golden skin.

Aww, how cute! I'd have loved to watch Semir Gerkhan

chasing bad guys in this (g)lovebox on the '50s Autobahn.

Hello Mr. Squidward.

 21

If there were ANY worthy opponent to

challange Toyo Tires on SEMA, chances are that

it was Yokohama's twostory outdoor display

centered with the Supra A90 dressed into a

Pandem widebody and their traditional livery.

FEATURE // MAZDA MIATA MX-5 (1990)

Words by Roland Márk Nagy

Photos by Colby Hempel // Zach Stout

 24

Jinba ittai the Japanese term for the perfect symbiosis between horse and

rider was the design philosophy at Mazda during developing the MX5 Miata in

the late ‘80s, which covers five main requirements: compact and lightweight

design, two comfy seats, 50:50 weight distribution (that automatically means FR

layout), independent suspension at all four wheels, and solid chassisdriveline

connection for the sake of sharp and direct throttle response. No wonder it's a

secret crush for so many car guys to this day.

 25

C

olby Hempel is not an

exception either. Though

this cheekily young 21yearold

mate from Hainesport, NJ is

apparently a bit more of a car

guy material than most of us,

despite his age. Not only this

lad is talented carphotographer/core

member of

the local carclub Beyond

Limits, but the cherry on top is

definitely his LSswapped V8

Miata which is just as mad as

Ryan Tuerck’s Ferrari 458

swapped Toyota 86, the GT4586.

She's an exceptional love, but

not the first one. Colby's first

car was a 1999 Miata NB, which

slowly but surely got dragged

him into this world of modded

cars. Shortly after, just when

their relationship started to turn

exciting, poor cargot a hit by a

deer. Though the damage on

the car was not fatal, shortly

after Colby chose to let go of its

hands. He tasted other cars,but

as they say, there was no way

back: he bought another Miata

in August 2017. Why? Because

jinba ittai: cheap at price, cheap

at costs, lightweight, compact,

fun to drive – and easy to work

on.

 26

A TINY ANGRY VERSION OF

A CORVETTE

This LSswap saga wasn’t a clear

goal. Colby's initial aims now

sound quite reserved compared

to result. As he told,"The original

plan was to build a 1.8 with

forged internals and run a big

turbo but after doing research I

learned that the transmission

and the rear end would not hold

my power goals reliably. I was

going to have to swap them for

something stronger anyways so

may as well use the most

reliable and powerful engine I

could find.”

Eventually, that engine was GM’s

5.7liter V8, the LS1 built in by a

local garage Unit 12 Motoring.

Now there’s 400 horsepower in

the little Mazda’s nose being fed

through FAST racing fuel rails

while kicking back 400 Nm of

max torque to the Ford 8.8 IRS

through a T56 sixspeed

gearbox, though apparently the

driveshafts could deliver double

amount of that to the wheels. That

seems a clever oversizing. Feels

fairly robust even reading it, but

in real life this little jewelry box

still has some jinba ittai roots left:

the V8 did fit pretty decently into

the Miata’s little bay, moreover

Colby estimates the car’s weight

still barely over a ton. This

combo delivers a paradoxonic

feeling like you're driving "a tiny

angry version of a Corvette.”

 27

 29

TORETTO WOULD GIVE HIS

APPROVAL FOR THAT

This Miata could be a bloody

proper protagonist in the Fast

and Furioussaga – and take

that as an honest compliment

this time. Widened with a 2M

Technics Rocketbunny fender

kit, a set of 15” Felgenwerks

wheels, and body covered with

a consolidated Finelines

camouflage these handful of

humble mods are just enough to

express yourself. I’m taking a

guess that in a parallel universe

where Dominic Toretto really

exists, he'd chose this Miata

over that Dodge Charger.

On the inside a Hard Dog

rollcage supports some more

torsion stiffness, 4point G

Force harnesses for further

safety, and an NRG steering

wheel with a quick release.

Sure a project like this has some

kinks after the finishing

herself on its inagural mission,

right after it was able to hit the

road. Colby's first road lead to

TECHY-TECHY // SELECTIVE YELLOW HEADLIGHTS

Why And When

To Use Selective

Yellow

Headlights?

Words by Roland Márk Nagy

White headlights are brighter, and the car

looks more badass with that at night. Yellow

headlights are so retro so the car looks

more badass with that at night. These are

two of the reasons car guys mention when

they pick either color. And it's okay, I mean

both colors are completely legal and free

to use, though generally warm and cold

white headlights are the most common on

today's roads as they are brighter. But since

winter is here and the number of daylight

hours are much less, selective yellow

headlights can kick white light's ass under

some circumstances.

Photo by halfrain // Flickr.com (CC BYSA 2.0)

A

nyway, selective yellow

headlights are quite

retro indeed. Back in the days

this color was much more

common to be seen on

nighttime's roads. Moreover:

in France no other colored

headlights were allowed but

selective yellow on vechiles

from 1937 onwards. This is

why selective yellow is also

called 'French yellow'. Of

course there were road safety

reasons for that, but there's a

legend saying that this

regulation was meant to keep

French cars recognizable at

night. This may sound like the

French were playing fancy,

though World War II started

two years later and gotta

admit: it must have made the

French soldiers' job a whole

lot easier to see if there's a

friendly or an enemy vechile

approacing from the distance

only by the color of its

headlights.

Selective yellow headlights

ruled France's roads for over

50 years untill the

widespread availibility of

halogen lightbulbs and the

European Union's ISO

standards erased them in

1993. There is an unique

exception though: in the

World Endurance

Championship, the LMGTE

cars have selective yellow

headlights so you can easily

separate them from the

Prototypes at night.

Of course one thing is to use

them in motorsport, and it

looks trendy and authentic on

pre90s' French cars and early

BMWs. But it can make sense

to use them on the streets as

well. And the magic behind it

is the way we see things I

mean literally. So let's run

through the basics of optics.

 32

Easy ways to convert white into yellow: film and cap (via eBay)

Visible light, as part of the

electromagnetic spectrum is

an electomagnetic radiation

which you can sense with

your eyes. The spectrum of

visible light's wavelenght is in

between 390 and 750

nanometers you can see all

the colors within this range.

Including white: the mother of

all colors. Since white

contains all the colors of the

Driving in bad weather, like

rainy, snowy or foggy

conditions white light reflects

back more from these

elements, and this can cause

a blurry dazzle on your eyes.

Selective yellow light doesn't

reflect back such an extent,

therefore it improves

visibility. Especially on long

night stints, because you eyes

won't get tired that soon.

You can put a layer of

selective yellow film on the

lights or use yellow lens spray

paint or you can buy a pair of

yellow caps which you can

just put over the lightbulb.

Keep in mind though that this

slight modification reduces

the brightness by 1215%, but

it's cheap and if you changed

your mind, it's easily

reversable without damage.

rainbow, it reflects back the

whole spectrum of visible

light. If you want to see

selective yellow, you have to

take the colors with the

shortest wavelenght out of the

spectrum namely blue,

indigo, and violet. Why these?

Because the shorter the

wavelenght, the worse for

your eyes. It's harder for them

to process and see.

So the conclusion is that

selective yellow lights are

better to use as fog lights.

Selective yellow lightbulbs

are not in today's trending

searches, especially these

days when bright LEDs are

making H4 and H5 bulbs

obsolete. However there are

still some methods if you look

it up on eBay or Amazon or

Wish or AliExpress.

Long story short, selective

yellow lights are not just some

trendy passing fancy. It can

serve your eyes if the weather

is foggy. But please

remember: whatever color

your fog lights are, use them

only when the weather

conditions make it necessary.

Coming up next time...

Recurring readers might remember our Swedish brother Tony de la Hoz and his

Resistance Missile System in the previous issue including a 1000HP BMW

M54B30powered infamous but notorious 1990 Volvo 740 GLT sleeper called Leea.

Tony was enjoying the Volvo at its limits since her feature, but later on he was

about to get rid of her by tearing it down. Well, he eventually changed his mind.
