Release your kids’ inner innovator at Galileo Summer Camps
While it’s their 19th
summer of running awardwinning
camps in the San
Francisco Bay area, they’re
thrilled to be heading into
their fifth year in the Chicagoland
area. Galileo
engages every kid with an
engaging mix of handson
learning and summer
fun. Supported by the
boundless energy of the
best staff around, campers
from Pre-K through 10th
grade unlock their inner
design-thinker, learning to
creatively solve problems,
fearlessly try new things
and persist in the face of
challenges—all at your
neighborhood school.
Fueled by a process inspired
by the Stanford
d.school, Galileo instructors
unlock the innovation skills
campers need to thrive. The
heart of Galileo beats inside
our passionate people who
nurture and inspire campers
every day. They seek out
the best of the best through
our meticulous screening
process, and couldn’t be
prouder of our talented, professional
staff, so many of
whom return each and every
year. Galileo has been the
winner of 37 “best camp”
awards and 96 percent of
parents would recommend
Galileo to a friend.
“Not only is our son
gaining incredibly valuable
skills in risk-taking, grit,
collaboration and innovation
but he comes home every
single day with a huge
smile on his face and so
much to share! Thank you!”
said Betsy M. of Chicago.
Camp Galileo (pre-K–fifth
engineer incredible inventions
and have a blast playing
outside. Each thoughtfully
designed activity is
style schedule. In addition
to learning from amazing
Galileo educators, CITs
will spend part of each
week gaining new experience
in a series of journeys.
Glenview Park District
offers variety of fun
camp experiences
Make new friendships, lifetime memories,
find a new sport or take in all the wonders
of nature this summer at Glenview
Park District camps. Journey through our
camp brochure which offers something
for every child age 3-17 with the perfect
combination of fun, friendship, adventure
and safety.
Even children as young as two will benefit
from socializing prior to preschool in
a setting with mom or dad in You Are My
Sunshine (YAMS) day camp. Slightly
older kids will enjoy scavenger hunts and
other games on special theme days like
Olympics Day, Water Day, Carnival Day
and more. Our eight week camps offer the
best that summer offers like swimming,
sports, arts and crafts, theatre, dance,
Minecraft, claymation, outdoor games
and farming.
Glenview Park District staff provide
an environment that encourages kids to
step out of their comfort zone and build
self-esteem. After the eight-week session
ends on July 31, the fun keeps going for
one more week with Summer Extension
Camp. Seven to 12-year-olds had this option
last year, but this year, we are opening
it up to younger residents. It’s now
available for children ages 5-12 with optional
before and after care.
Another new camp this year is Camp
Glenview at Crowley Park for ages 11-14.
It includes several field trips each week
throughout the summer. Although the duration
of camp is eight weeks, participants
can sign up week to week. So, you pick
the weeks you want to attend.
We are entering our third year of Summer
Enrichment Programs in partnership
with Glenview School District 34. These
talented teachers are excited as ever to offer
classes at Attea Middle School including
Math Madness, Hooked on Crochet,
Tabletop Board Gaming, Safety City, Chess
Clinic and Higher Level Basketball Skills.
Speaking of sports, check out these
camps: Junior Titan Boys Lacrosse Clinic,
Extra Innings Summer Baseball, Football
Clinic, Mindset Girls Volleyball, Higher
Level Basketball Skills & Training, Superstar
Tumbling, Starlight Cheer, Premier
Poms Dance, Summer Swing Golf,
Tennis and Competitive Tennis Training,
Junior Paddle and Sports for a Lifetime.
The Glenview Park District offers flexibility.
Sign up for full or half day camps
ranging from two to five days a week. We
also have an “in-between” option for parents
who say, “My child isn’t quite ready
for full day, but could handle more than a
half-day camp.” The Young Adventurers
Camp for 5-6 year olds runs from 9 a.m.-
2 p.m. They experience field trips once a
week and will not visit the outdoor pools.
We want to remind parents that early
bird registration is the best way to go. Not
only are the fees reduced, but families can
also register with a deposit and pay in a
series of installments. Those who register
after March 15 must pay the regular fee
and pay in full at time of registration.
So, put down the technology and experience
Karzen family
combines tennis and
basketball day camps
The summer is a great
time to improve. Our
camps provide an enthusiastic,
positive playing environment
for students to
practice their skills, learn
how to compete and have
fun as they do it.
With more than 70 years
combined teaching experience,
Jerry and John Karzen
return to captain multiple
tennis and basketball
offerings for children of
all ages: 5-18 years old for
tennis, 4-14 years old for
basketball.
Tennis campers start in
our Little Sprouts program
(ages 5-7), then move on
to our tennis camp, (ages
8-13) then to our tournament
camp (ages 11-14),
our high school tennis
(ages 13-18) and finally
high performance classes.
Basketball campers start
in our Little Dribblers program
(ages 5-7), and then
move on to the junior basketball
(ages 8-14).
We keep a four-to-one
student-to-instructor ratio
for tennis, a six-to-one ratio
for basketball, and offer
flexible weekly or daily
Countryside Day School offers
‘awe-inspiring’ camp experience
Countryside Day
School, a renowned institution
in Northbrook for
more than 50 years, continues
to fill a niche in the
educational market by providing
students 16 months
through eighth grade with
an unique learning experience
that emphasizes not
only rigorous academic
studies but also the development
of critical character
skills essential for success
not just in school, but
more importantly in life.
Countryside is committed
to working in partnership
with parents to help young
people become more than
great students but also exceptional
adults.
Summer can be an excellent
time to find out
more about this world
class school. Camps are
offered for students 3–12
years old at two-week intervals
beginning June 15
and are taught by Countryside’s
highly experienced
and dedicated faculty.
Camps for children 3–6
years blend classroom experience
with themes like
the science of cooking,
study of safari animals, or
fundamental reading intensive
with outdoor play
and daily swimming in
their backyard pool.
For students 6–12 years
old, camp themes including
writing and performing
a children’s opera, Master
Chef Junior, coding and
gaming with Code Ninjas
in Glenview, and Pinewood
Derby — also with
outdoor play and swimming.
These programs are
all small group experiences,
not mixed in with
hundreds of campers.
Faculty at Countryside
understand education in a
broader and deeper context
than conventional schools.
They see school as an internship
to adulthood in
which students develop a
strong sense of agency and
empathy. Countryside students
feel a deep responsibility
to make a contribution.
This is accomplished
in classes that are “microsocieties”
designed to emulate
real life, with mixed
ages, the expectation to
take initiative, permission
to follow interests which
develops deep concentration
and an intrinsic love
of learning, and room to
learn that failing is necessary
in order to accomplish
great things.
This great work is
also accomplished with
uniquely strong one-to-one
student-teacher relationships
where teachers do
more than offer academic
content but also serve as
mentors to their students.
Teachers’ knowledge of
each individual student is
one of the most treasured
aspects of the Countryside
experience by both
students and parents alike.
It is also what makes the
role of teaching so inspiring
that Countryside Day
enjoys very little teacher
turnover.
The final piece of the
Countryside success strategy
is a close working relationship
with parents in
which faculty share observations
of their students,
seek information from
parents about what they
see at home, and make
recommendations regarding
parenting based on the
expert, collective experience
of master teachers.
The CDS faculty is keenly
aware of the changes in
culture that are impacting
children and families and
how these changes are affecting
the development of
young people.
Countryside’s website,
countrysideday.org, is a
great place to start your
research, but families say,
without exception, that
it is a visit to the classrooms
themselves that reveal
the unparalleled and
awe-inspiring educational
experience. Parents are
encouraged to schedule a
personalized tour anytime.
Kids become explorers and
creators at Noggin Builders camps
How do you build a
dunk tank? What can
cooking teach us about
chemistry? What kinds of
challenges would you create
if you made an escape
room? These are just a
few of the questions kids
explore in Noggin Builders
camps, where they
dive into different STEMrelated
themes each week
and follow their curiosity
along new pathways.
At Noggin Builders, we
have a blast creating and
experimenting in classes
all year round—but summer
is the time to really
dig in and have fun. Kids
collaborate with each other
on projects, and new
friendships are forged
It’s time to rock with Glenbrook’s School of Rock
Get in ahead of the rush to
secure your spot at School of
Rock — Glenbrook, opening
spring 2020. School of
Rock is the world’s leading
performance-based music
school, dedicated to helping
students of all ages and levels
reach their potential both
on and off stage.
We teach drums, guitar,
bass, keyboards, voice and
develop songwriters. Our
students attend both private
lessons and group rehearsals.
The team dynamic creates
a supportive, inclusive
and motivating environment
where kids feel inspired
to excel. We have
programs for ages 4 to 99
that will challenge and inspire
every step of the way!
As we like to say, we put on
shows to teach music. We
do not teach music to put on
shows.
School of Rock — Glenbrook
is brought to you by
the team that owns and operates
the company’s highest-performing
school in
Oak Park.
Summer Camp is a great
introduction to the School
of Rock method and community.
Our camps are
highly immersive and insanely
fun. We offer our full
slate of regular programming
and special workshops
all year long, but
summer also means camp
time. Here is what is on the
slate at School of Rock —
Glenbrook for 2020:
Rock ‘N’ Roll Boot Camp
(June 15-19, July 27-31)
Come in with a choice
of instrument and we will
get you started learning the
basics and actually playing
songs with others right
away. No experience necessary
— all it takes is the
desire to rock. Rock ‘n’ Roll
make-overs and a photoshoot
are included. Open to
voice, keys, guitar, bass and
drums. This session culminates
in a gig at our in-house
venue.
Beginner, all instruments,
ages 8 to 13, full day: 9
a.m.-3 p.m.
Rock Rookies Boot Camp
(July 6-10)
Rookies is an early music
learner’s program where
students will learn songs by
bands like Queen and Imagine
Dragons to gain fundamental
instrument learning
on appropriately-sized
gear, and learn the basics of
ear training, rhythm, pitch,
song structure, teamwork
and close listening. We use
a house backline of guitars,
bass, drums, keyboards, and
mics so instrument ownership
is not necessary. This
session culminates in a
showcase for families.
Beginner, all instruments,
ages 6 and 7, half day: 9
a.m.-12 p.m.
With the Beatles! Camp
(July 13-17)
Do you love everything
about John, Paul, George,
and Ringo? So do we. Our
song selection will be customized
to the playing level
of the students and will be
drawn from all of the Beatles’
albums. Ear Training
will be covered and learning
how to build a chord
with voices. We will provide
a great introduction to
the melodies, structure, and
musicianship that made up
this very special band. This
session culminates in a gig
at our in-house venue.
Advanced beginner and
up (please ask), ages 10 and
up, full day: 9 a.m.-3 p.m.
Green Day (Aug. 10-14)
In honor of this longtime
band that has carried
the punk torch for new generations,
we have designed
a camp that will not only
satisfy your urge to play
hard, fast, melodic poppunk
songs but also to unpack
the band’s approach
to songwriting. Understand
what inspires them, drives
their music and keeps their
songs fresh and relevant.
This session culminates in
a performance at our inhouse
venue.
Gow offers rich opportunities for dyslexic students
The Gow School is a college-prep
boarding school
for students, grades 6-12,
with dyslexia and similar
language-based learning
disabilities. Focusing on
small class sizes, 3 to 7 students
per class, and a low
four-to-one student to faculty
ratio, The Gow School
offers a multisensory approach
to teaching that enables
dyslexic students to
thrive. The Gow community
has a sense of belonging,
of equality, and of connection
born on common trials
and shared triumph.
Gow has a start fast, finish
strong mentality and
students typically start to
see progress soon after
they step foot in our classrooms.
Progress typically
comes quickly, soon after
they invest themselves
in the program. At the
school’s core is a structured
program designed to
help students navigate the
academic day and a daily
schedule designed to keep
students busy. Between
a packed class schedule,
after-school sports, study
hall and Saturday classes,
there is little unprogrammed
time.
The School is settled on
a 120-acre campus which
gives our students plenty
of room to learn and play.
Boarding school life does
not always allow lots of
free time, but it has plenty
of room for fun. Students
are so involved – playing
sports, going on trips and
hanging out with each other
– that they get the most
out of the rich residential
experience.
In July, the School’s coed
summer program is five
weeks of learning and fun
for ages 8 to 16. The Gow
School summer program is
for students who have been
experiencing academic difficulties,
or have been diagnosed
with dyslexia or
specific learning disabilities.
The summer program
runs from the end of June
to early August with morning
academics, afternoon
fun and games and weekend
adventures. The Gow
School summer program
gives students academic
tools and self-confidence
they can take with them
wherever they go; to the
classroom and beyond.
By combining a structured
program and environment
with flexibility,
individualization and room
for fun, Gow provides a
rich school experience that
is precisely what dyslexic
students need to learn and
to enjoy learning.
Past STEM Discoveries
included Coding, Grossology,
Baker’s own music master and
professional musician, Dr. Courville,
will lead campers through
a musical journey this summer.
types of sound, including percussion,
strings and winds, while
creating their own unique musical
instruments and soundscapes.
Our nature explorers learn
about ecosystems, animals and
their habitats, and the important
valuable job skills.
Weeks of Aug. 10 and Aug. 17
Feel the performer’s spirit at Music Theater Works
On five Mondays this
summer, a group of young
people will gather, and
they will share a single
thought: “Five days to
showtime!”
At the Music Theater
Works Summer Workshops,
performers ages
8 to 13 gather for a week
of rehearsals, singing,
dancing and acting in
preparation for a musical
performance on Saturday
fortheir friends and family.
Each week is a separate
session, and this year the
shows include “The Wizard
of Oz” (July 6-11),
“Seussical” (July 13-18),
“Legally Blonde” (July
20-25), “Guys and Dolls”
(July 27- Aug. 1) and
“Cinderella” (Aug. 3-8).
Putting together a show
in five days makes for an
exciting week, as all are
assigned parts, learn their
songs and practice their
dances until everything is
ready for the big show. It’s
a lot of work, but that has
never seemed to bother the
workshop participants —
they’re having too much
fun.
For many kids, the
workshops give them their
first taste of performing
in musical theater. Many
have gone in as absolute
beginners and emerged as
enthusiastic performers,
eager for their next challenge.
After last year’s workshops,
one mother wrote
to us that her daughter
“was completely taken by
her experiences in camp
last summer. It unlocked a
beautiful part of her and it
has allowed her to blossom
like nothing else she’s ever
experienced. Truly lifechanging.”
Workshop manager
Anya Plotkin is a big fan
of the workshops’ “tagteam”
casting style, in
which everyone is guaranteed
a part.
“Of course, we all want
to be the star of the show!
In our program, each and
every student has an equal
solo. All our kids get their
chance to shine, regardless
of prior experience,”
Plotkin said. “When we do
‘Annie,’ we may have seven
Annies and four Daddy
Warbucks and six Miss
Hannigans! The kids learn
that being part of a team is
a vital element to a great
performance.”
But Plotkin is convinced
the most important part of
the program is how it fosters
self-confidence in the
young performers.
“The rehearsal room is a
safe place for all our kids
to explore who they are,
without fear of censure or
discouragement,” Plotkin
said. “As they grow as
performers, they also grow
as people. They step into
someone else’s shoes, they
make new best friends,
they learn things they never
thought possible before,
we open them up to new
experiences and new ways
of thinking.”
“We help our students
every day, through a love
of music, dance, acting,
and each other,” Plotkin
added.
through Friday from
a final dress rehearsal on
Saturday at 2 p.m. and a
p.m. Registration can be
Soccer organization provides fun, competitive environment for youth
American Youth Soccer
Organization (AYSO)
425 was founded when the
recreational soccer leagues
from Glencoe, Kenilworth,
Northfield and Winnetka
combined their youth soccer
programs and joined AYSO.
Today, more than 1,200
children between the ages
of 4-14 participate in the
program. AYSO 425 is one
WeHaKee Camp for Girls is an all-girls
summer camp in Winter, Wisconsin.
Together, we create memorable, fun
experiences that will enhance each girl’s
strength, confidence, independence, and
compassion. Lasting relationships and
the adventure of a lifetime begins here!
of the strongest AYSO regions
in the country.
AYSO is celebrating its
53rd year as the largest
youth soccer organization
in the USA. AYSO was established
in the Los Angeles
area in 1964 with nine
teams. It was the dream
of a group of devoted soccer
enthusiasts who started
the organization in a garage.
Today, AYSO has
50,000 teams and more than
500,000 players nationwide.
Its goal is to provide
world-class youth soccer
programs that enrich children’s
lives.
AYSO is supported by
125,000 volunteers. Parents
donate their time as coaches,
referees, team parents,
administrators and sponsors.
Along with being a
volunteer-run organization,
AYSO is a partnership of
the area parks departments,
schools and the community.
As a youth sports organization,
AYSO recognizes
the importance of providing
a safe and healthy atmosphere
Banner Day Camp ‘has
it all’ in the North Shore
Banner Day Camp is
proud to offer the North
Shore’s premier day camp
experience and is so excited
to celebrate its 56th
summer in 2020. When
camp was opened in 1964,
Banner’s desire was to
build a community centered
on compassion, kindness
and joy. This remains
our desire. Over the years
Banner has become home
to so many campers; a
place where they are nurtured,
accepted and a part
of an amazing camp community.
The growth our campers
make socially and emotionally
is life changing.
There is nothing more important
during their formative
years of life than to
give them a place where
they develop deep and
genuine self-confidence
by learning and mastering
new skills, become
increasingly independent,
increase resiliency, practice
empathy and grow in
social skills like friendship,
sportsmanship and
teamwork – all while having
fun.
The facilities and activities
at Banner are second
to none. The wide variety
of activities at camp provide
unique opportunities
for campers to experience
new things. From adventure
activities like the high
ropes course, bungee trampoline
and bumper boats
to swimming in our pool
complex or at our lake,
Banner has it all.
Our team is dedicated to
creating a fun, growthful
summer and an experience
that will be cherished for a
lifetime. Our Leadership
Team – made up of teachers,
school administrators
and camp professionals
– provide unsurpassed supervision
while developing
partnership with the
parents and the providing
the very best care of the
campers. Banner’s amazing
camp staff undergo extensive
training allowing
them to lead groups and
specialty areas with enthusiasm
and skill.
We encourage you to
visit camp and see for
yourself! Banner’s office
is open weekdays all year
long. Call us at (847) 295-
4900 to schedule a personal
tour to see the facility
and meet our team.
the years, AYSO has created
many valuable pro-grams
and concepts. Most notably,
AYSO revolutionized youth
sports with its Everyone
Plays and Balanced Teams
philosophies.
In AYSO, each child who
registers is guaranteed to
play at least half of every
game. AYSO recognizes
that games are more fun
when the teams are evenly
matched, so teams are balanced
teams based on each
player’s skill level and the
overall ability of the team.
AYSO 425 teams up with
international and American
professional soccer trainers
to provide top notch soccer
instruction for AYSO’s
players and expand the
pro-grams that AYSO 425
offers. Throughout the year
AYSO 425 provides professional
trainers with fall and
spring training programs
for all ages, team coaching,
coaches clinics and afterschool
clinics.
AYSO’s camps for 2020
will run between July 13-
18 and Aug. 17-21.
