CSUDH Osher Lifelong Learning 

Institute (OLLI at CSUDH) is a learningin-retirement 

organization for individuals 

50+. Faculty from CSU Dominguez Hills 

present lectures on an exciting variety of 

topics at community centers in Carson, 

Manhattan Beach, Torrance and the 

CSUDH campus. Participation in the lectures 

is included with OLLI’s annual membership 

of $30. 

Explore the pleasure of 

learning with OLLI at CSUDH 

OLLI classes, workshops, and discussion 

groups, on topics ranging from opera to 

aging, tennis to Tennison, and economics to 

iPads, are available on campus in Carson on 

a fee per class basis. Learning takes place in

offered through OLLI’s Omnilore program

The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute 

offers a unique opportunity for individuals 

who consider lifelong learning 

an integral part of retirement. Our 

program (known as OLLI at CSUDH) 

consists of a range of experiences 

including study groups, lecture series, 

cultural experiences, workshops, special events and travel. 

All adults are welcome to join OLLI at CSUDH. The organization 

is designed primarily for individuals 50 years of age 

or more. Courses and activities listed in this catalog respond 

to the requests and interests of OLLI members who desire 

to learn from each other as well as from University professors 

and community leaders. Learning occurs in a 

supportive environment without grades, tests or requirements. 

Additional benefits of OLLI membership include 

access to the University library, bookstore discounts, a 

student identification card, and newsletters. 

OLLI members represent all walks of life, a wide range of 

experience and diverse backgrounds. Under the guidance of 

the College of Extended & International Education, members 

work together to build the OLLI organization by volunteering 

for OLLI committees. Individuals also lead or facilitate classes 

and workshops. There are plenty of opportunities for selfexpression, 

involvement and personal enrichment.

• Discussion Groups – Discussions are often conducted in

meet in two modern computer labs with ample opportunity for 

hands-on practice. Additional fees may apply. 

• Field Trips – Members visit local museums, gardens, and

groups in which each member participates by presenting a topic

Let’s Read a Play! 

No stage or acting experience required! Join us for the opportunity 

to polish up your dramatic skills. Our director, Maria Ruiz, will 

introduce the authors and theater history before readings begin. 

We invite you to become a part of this interesting and interactive 

approach to enjoy a play. Expect some lively discussion 

about meaning and context.

Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, by Tennessee 

Williams, won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama 

in 1955. Set in the Mississippi Delta on the 

plantation of a wealthy cotton tycoon, the 

play examines the relationships among members 

of his family, primarily between his son 

Brick and Brick’s wife, Maggie the “Cat.” The 

play features several recurring motifs, such as 

social mores, greed, superficiality, mendacity, 

decay, sexual desire, repression, and death.

The Importance of Being Earnest, 

A Trivial Comedy for Serious People, 

by Oscar Wilde, is a farcical comedy in which 

the protagonists maintain fictitious personae 

to escape burdensome social obligations. 

Working within the social conventions of late 

Victorian London, the play’s major themes are 

the triviality with which society treats institutions 

as serious as marriage, and the resulting 

satire of Victorian ways. Its witty dialogue has 

made it Wilde’s most enduringly popular play. 

2 Mondays, November 21 & 28 

Glengarry Glen Ross, by David Mamet, won 

the Pulitzer Prize in 1984. The play occurs 

during parts of two days in the lives of four 

desperate Chicago real estate agents who are 

prepared to engage in any number of unethical, 

illegal acts—from lies and flattery to 

bribery, threats, intimidation and burglary— 

to sell undesirable real estate to unwitting 

prospective buyers. The title refers to two real 

estate properties: Glengarry Highlands and 

Glen Ross Farms.

Social Tennis for Seniors 

Tennis has been called the perfect sport. Come take part in our 

class and have fun, while enjoying all the excellent health benefits. 

The great thing about tennis is that anyone at any skill level 

can play. There is a moderate level of physical activity. We participate 

in light to medium stretching and warm up exercises. We 

will learn the basics of tennis, including the classic grip, forehand, 

backhand, top-spin, serve, volleys, and doubles play. To get started 

bring a tennis racket, tennis shoes, small towel, sunglasses, 

hat, and water. Class meets for 27 sessions by the CSUDH tennis 

courts and will remain available an additional week for practice. 

(Note: OLLI members are required to sign a waiver at first class 

session.)

Aging Gracefully 

Aging is inevitable. For as many seniors who are asked about 

the process of aging there are as many different perceptions and 

answers. What positive actions can we take on this road called 

“aging”? Attitudes, decisions, choices and acceptance are but a 

few topics to consider. We will discuss and explore various 

concepts, share techniques and consider how to age gracefully 

and successfully.

Traveling by Air with a Disability, Health 

Issue, or Special Need 

Many individuals with disabilities are reluctant to travel by air because 

of the challenges associated in getting around the airport 

and during the flight. The US Department of Transportation has 

addressed many of these challenges by issuing regulations to all 

airlines about how they must interact with passengers who have 

disabilities. Knowing what your rights are, as well as what your 

responsibilities are as a passenger, makes traveling by air a more 

pleasant experience. During the lecture we will address your 

rights with respect 

to seating, traveling 

with a respiratory 

device, and traveling 

with a service 

animal, among

The 2015 dietary guidelines are out. There is an update of “My- 

Plate” for older adults, and there are other changes. Where does 

the evidence for change come from? How do the many “other 

plates” or diets on the table, such as: Low Carb, Low Fat, MIND, 

Mediterranean, Vegan, and Paleo, compare to “MyPlate”?

This presentation and discussion will address these questions, specific 

controversies, such as dietary preventable diseases. We will review 

macro-nutrient and micronutrient information of whole foods. 

Then, you decide what might be missing from your plate or 

what you might want to remove from it.

Have you ever wondered about the trees, bushes and plants you 

see on the streets, lawns, business parks and open fields of the 

South Bay as you drive by? Or are they just “plants”? Some of 

these trees and bushes have colorful histories from the Wild West, 

the Middle East, or Medieval times. Some are good to eat, some 

are toxic, and some are just plain obnoxious, destroying sidewalks 

or displacing native species. They all influence the climate, the air 

we breathe, and the 

look of Southern 

California. Come

Howard Manning is 

a retired Cal/OSHA 

safety engineer with 

an MS in Safety from 

USC. He has been a gardener, naturalist and forager for over 50 

years. He is a past member of the Northern Nut Growers Association 

(NNGA). For several years, he owned and operated “Harvestin 

Howard LLC” which manufactured acorn tortilla chips, elderberry 

jelly, and a related comic book. 

Dr. Connie Vadheim, who has a passion for and a specialty in native 

plants, will join us during one of the class sessions. She will also 

treat us to a docent tour of Mother Nature’s Backyard in the 

Gardena Willows Wetlands.

America was founded. Mr. Rosenzweig will discuss how our ever 

changing surveillance programs are struggling to function within 

the bounds of the law. 

Paul Rosenzweig, J.D., is a cum laude graduate of University of 

Chicago Law School. He lectures on cybersecurity law and policy 

at George Washington University Law School. He asks the thought 

provoking question “Can technology, security and civil liberty coexist 

in the digital age?” Be a part of the discussion group to get a 

close up view of what information is being gathered on the average 

American citizen. 

During this lecture series you will delve into topics covering everything 

from the legal framework for surveillance, to the structure 

of the U.S. intelligence community, to the myriad technologies 

that capture and analyze data such as drones and cell phones. 

The course offers a framework for answering many of the 

security questions you already have, such as ‘Who watches the 

watchers?’ and ‘Who actually owns the data collected?’. While 

Mr. Rosenzweig’s lectures may not fully answer these and other 

question that arise regarding this subject, he does offer tools and 

examples to assist your ability to understand and draw your own

wealthy philanthropist Elizabeth Milbank Anderson, whose family 

was connected to the Borden Company, and the Chicago, Milwaukee

The Rancho Los Cerritos 

Ranch and Gardens 

Eleven cogged stones were discovered at the Rancho in 1930,

Goodyear Blimp Base 

Goodyear’s blimp base in Carson, California opened in January 

1968 and covers 27 acres. It has been home to eight Goodyear 

blimps since then but with just three different names: the Columbia, 

the Eagle and the Spirit of America. Every day, more than a 

million commuters drive past the base just to catch a glimpse of the 

Blimp — a phenomenon local Angelenos call “The Blimp Effect”. 

Join OLLI for a behind-the-scenes tour of the base. Visit a hangar 

and view a blimp up close. Hear stories about flying the blimp from 

one of the pilots. Learn about “blimp science,” and more! 

This field trip involves a lot of walking, so wear comfortable, 

closed-toe shoes.

The History of Classical Music 

from the Renaissance to Modern Times 

The history of classical music from the Renaissance to modern times 

with sound bites and an optional field trip to a free symphony 

orchestra performance. 

Sophia Momand, M.D., will give a campus Osher Lecture on 

classical music on October 26, 12:30 - 2:00pm. She performs cello 

with and currently serves on the Board of Directors of the Peninsula 

Symphony Orchestra. In addition, Dr. Momand has established her 

own orchestra ensemble called The Corelli Ensemble, which performs 

free baroque music concerts for the public. 

Then on October 30, 2016 everyone will have the chance to listen 

to classical music by attending the Peninsula Symphony Orchestra’s 

50th Anniversary Celebration at 7:00pm in the Redondo Union 

High School Auditorium.

OLLI’s Peer-led (Omnilore) Orientation 

The peer-led program of OLLI at CSUDH is known as Omnilore. 

The study/discussion group is the core of the peer-led program. 

Within the group, each member participates by choosing a topic 

related to the subject under study, doing research on it and then 

presenting the information to the group. Some study/discussion 

groups are structured around a book, which all members read 

and discuss as part of the meetings. Groups meet for two hours 

twice each month, 8 meetings for a total of 16 hours. The exact 

time of each class is set by the participants.

Berenice Abbott, Josepfa de Ayala, 

Elisabeth Virgee-Lebrun and many, many more 

have been major contributors to the artistic 

archives of various culture and eras. Explore 

the lives and creative output of some of these 

neglected artists. (We say “some” because there 

are far more women artists than can be covered in 

one Omnilore term!) But let’s dig in and see what 

treasures we find!

As computers put an ever-higher premium on expertise, what does 

the future hold for the workforce in the next generation or two? It 

has been said that with Communism, “We pretend to work, while 

they pretend to pay us.” It could equally be said of Capitalism that 

“We work hard enough to not be fired, while they pay us just 

enough so we don’t quit.” But what happens when laying off the 

average worker raises productivity and profit?

and minimal lifestyles, varieties of education, the evolving social 

contract.

Recently, the president of Cal Lutheran University, Tom Hoffarth, 

began teaching a history course using the history of baseball as the 

medium. He explains his premise that you can teach U.S. history

“If you want to understand America, you’ve got to understand a 

little bit about baseball,” the 60-year-old said, who grew up in New

This S/DG would follow Hoffarth’s lead and examine the beginnings 

and development of our national pastime in order to review and 

learn about our own history (and that of other nations, e.g. Cuba, 

Nicaragua…) since the 1830s.

(CUL) Reconciling America’s Cultures 

The American political scene is an embarrassing mess! Understanding 

the various perspectives and underlying value structures extant 

around the country is key to working our way out of this mess 

because compromises must be reached. First, the American population 

has been divided in foundational ways from colonial times 

with each group emphasizing different values, individualistic or 

communitarian, and different concepts of freedom. The USA is not 

a unitary society or nation-state as are some admired countries in 

Europe. Second, we have never resolved the enormous racial issues 

residual from plantation slavery. Third, the interaction of political 

structures and economic entities has become distorted and even 

corrupt. Fourth, the process by which we select and empower elected 

officials needs simplification and reform. Certainly we do not 

have one-person-one-vote. Fifth, the relevancy of all political parties 

has become questionable. 

This S/DG will review the cultural history of those who settled North 

America, how these cultures vary over the country, and the many 

conflicts that have always taken place. Then we will examine the 

different sets of values held most strongly by different portions of 

the “political spectrum.” Finally, we will examine selected proposals 

for improving our process. Maybe, we can find something realistic 

and plausible to improve our situation.

Portraits of the leading philosophers and writers who embodied 

the movements of 20c thought known as existentialism and 

phenomenology including Sartre, Camus, Jaspers, Heidegger, 

de Beauvoir and others. Using biographical narratives, the author 

examines not the large impersonal ideas, but the varied and 

conflicting truths found in the stories of individual lives. 

During the turbulent mid-century, these thinkers emphasized the 

experience of making choices and the wider question of what it

The nature of marriage and its place in American society is changing. 

Marriage, the time-honored way of promoting the interests 

of children, no longer works for many Americans. Nearly half of 

all marriages fail; more than 40% of American children are born 

to single mothers. Much of this change is due to economic factors. 

Marriage still works for the upper middle and higher income 

families, but not for those who are unskilled. This was foretold by 

Daniel Patrick Moynihan 50 years ago. A recent book, Growing 

Apart by Charles Murray, documented how all this is leading to a 

bifurcation of the country. This S/DG will examine the changing 

nature of marriage and ways in which greater unity and better lives 

for all children might be enhanced.

The Food Network and celebrity chefs are so common place now 

that we forget who got this trend started….Julia Child. Born in 

California, she reached out for challenges with intelligence, vitality, 

creativity and humor. After attending an Ivy League college on the 

East Coast, she joined the OSS during WWII and served overseas. 

While in Paris with her diplomat husband, Paul, she became the 

first woman to enroll in the famous Cordon Bleu School of Cooking. 

Her cook book, The Art of French Cooking, changed the 

perspective of modern cooking. Later, her pioneering cooking show 

on television would capture a nation of housewives and lead to the 

current interest in cooking and food. The suggested book is well 

documented and highly reviewed about all areas of her life. 

Possible presentation topics: Cooking schools and the competitive 

nature to enroll; women in the OSS of WWII; any number of celebrity 

chefs; economics of the food craze; how Michelin and Zagat 

star ratings are awarded; television and food; food critics, etc. 



(LIV) Be Here Now – Living A Mindful Life 

There is growing evidence that correlates the action of paying 

attention to your present moment with a reduction in stress, an 

increase in emotional intelligence, a growing sense of optimism and 

well-being, and an increase in neuroplasticity of the brain. It isn’t 

surprising that Beach Cities Health District is offering Mindfulness 

events and classes in their effort to promote health and wellness in 

the beach cities. 

This S/DG will be a chance to look into mindfulness-based emotional 

intelligence, what is it, how does one do it, why should one 

do it, and what scientific evidence supports it. We will use the 

book highly recommended by Gloria Kamler, a faculty member of 

the UCLA Mindfulness Awareness Research Center, entitled Search 

Inside Yourself. Written by Chade-Meng Tan, one of Google’s earliest 

engineers and now the head of GoogleEDU’s Personal Growth, 

it lays out a well-designed and tested way for development and 

application of emotional intelligence.

Radio brought us together as a nation in the ‘30s and ‘40s. It conveyed 

a sense of what was happening, rather than what had happened. 

We had a role in completing the picture, in giving meaning 

to the broadcasts. Radio required us to use our imagination, not 

only as individuals, but as a nation. Our goal will be to listen to a 

selection of recorded programs representing different types of listening: 

news, thrillers, drama, comedy, and sports. Some recordings 

will be historic, such as Orson Welles, War of the Worlds or FDR’s 

fireside chat on the eve of war with Japan. Others will be episodes 

from favorites such as Edgar Bergen and Charlie McCarthy; Jack 

Benny; Amos ‘n’ Andy; The Lone Ranger; Dimension X and The 

Shadow. 

Presentations might include: history of radio development; how we 

use radio; how radio shaped our ethnic, racial, and gender stereotypes; 

what makes listening appealing and understandable, such as

fame as a child star and then grew up to be one of Hollywood’s 

most admired directors. The class members will choose one of his 

many movies for their presentation - films such as: Splash, Cocoon, 

Apollo 13, A Beautiful Mind, In the Heart of the Sea to mention a 

few. The films will be viewed by all prior to the presentations date 

and will answer questions for class discussion generated by the 

presenter. We will learn that Howard loves the challenge of exploring 

different genres: domestic comedies, fantasies, sci-fi, suspense 

thrillers, historical dramas and big budget action films. No question 

that we loved seeing his rise to fame. The best part is that he is still 

making films for audiences today. 


Rain: A Natural and Cultural

(RSC) Rain – Science And Cultural 

Rain becomes a topic of conversation whenever we have too much 

or too little. We welcome rain as long as it doesn’t spoil our picnic 

or parade. The serious lack of rain is remembered in ‘the dust bowl’ 

and in areas without clean water access. Yet, countless floods and 

water damage is linked with rain during hurricanes and rivers overflowing 

from rain and snow melt. This S/DG would look at the scientific 

aspects of rain and efforts to control it or the water it brings 

forth along with the cultural aspects that evolved over history from 

raincoats to rain dances to diviners. 

Possible presentations include: water rights issues in California; 

de-salinization efforts; bottled water usage, current efforts to clean 

water in emerging countries; drought management; and rain water 

run-off options. 



(RUS) Unresolved Conflicts 

In The Former USSR 

Since the collapse of the Soviet Union, conflict in the former USSR 

has been a key concern for international security. This S/DG will 

study the violent conflicts within a region that contains all the 

modern ingredients for instability and aggression. It will examine 

current debates in international relations about power, interests, 

globalization, and the politics of identity as major drivers of contemporary 

war. Incidents such as the 2008 Russo-Georgian conflict, 

the wars in Chechnya, and Russia’s struggles over national identity 

and resources with the Ukraine and Moldova over the Crimea and 

the Trans-Dniester will provide ample material for presentations 

and discussions. With new issues like energy security, terrorism and 

transnational crime, and older tensions between East and West 

threatening to deepen once more, this is an important subject for 

addressing international security.

The Second American Revolution, 1783-1789 

The success of the American Revolution in 1781 secured the 

independence of the thirteen American colonies. The Articles of 

Confederation adopted shortly thereafter was not the creation of 

a nation so much as it was a mutual security pact between the 

thirteen newly sovereign entities. In our common reading, Joseph 

Ellis explores how a small group of prominent leaders were able to 

lead the transformation from a loose confederation of states to a 

nation-size republic. Ellis focuses on four of these transformational 

leaders: George Washington, Alexander Hamilton, John Jay, and 

James Madison. Along with several others (Robert Morris, Gouverneur 

Morris, and Thomas Jefferson) they managed to diagnose the 

dysfunctions of the existing system, force a calling of the Constitutional 

Convention, set the agenda in Philadelphia, orchestrate the 

debates in the various ratifying states, and draft the Bill of Rights to 

ensure state compliance with the constitutional settlement. Join us 

as we review the achievements of these men and this period, which

Did you read comic books as a child? If so you might like to try 

the adult analogue, the graphic novel. This course will look at the 

recent history of Singapore, a very interesting place itself, though 

the words and drawing of a unique book. Part graphic novel, part 

art book, part narrative essay, The Art of Charlie Chan Hock Chye is 

a look at Singapore unlike any other before. By reflecting on the life 

and work of a comic creator whose career spanned half a century, 

the book comments wryly on Singapore’s past and present while 

honoring comics as a storytelling medium. This book is a #1 seller 

on Amazon’s Art of Comics and Manga. Presentation topics could 

relate to Singapore as well as other aspects of graphic novels or different 

graphic novels. 



(SHK) Shakespeare: All The World’s a Stage… 

With players standing and with a few props, we propose to do 

reading walk-throughs of Henry VI, Part 2 (continuing our excursion 

through the 8 contiguous History plays, this being the 6th), 

Cymbeline, and Macbeth — subject to affirmation at the premeeting 

in August. Class members will learn how to research all 

perspectives of Shakespeare’s works — sources upon which the 

Bard builds rich characters and enhances the plots, how to play 

each character “in character,” themes, symbols, images, motifs, 

and commentary on issues of the day. Members will leave this class 

with a fuller understanding of the masterful story construction, 

realistic characters with depth and humanity, and the rich, 

evocative language which have earned William Shakespeare the 

title of greatest writer in the English language. 


Selected Plays 

(TFS) The Fatal Shore 

For 80 years between 1788 and 1868 England transported its 

convicts to Australia. This punishment provided the first immigrants 

and the work force to build the colony. Using diaries, letters, and 

original sources, Hughes meticulously documents this history. All 

sides of the story are told: the political and social reasoning behind 

the Transportation System, the viewpoint of the captains who had 

the difficult job of governing and developing the colonies, and of 

course the dilemma of the prisoners. This is a very thorough and 

accurate history of Australian colonization written by the Australian-born 

author of the book. Possible topics for further research 

and discussion could include: differences between Melbourne and 

Sydney; who were the convicts; the political and cultural circumstances 

of transporting convicts to Australia; the Aboriginal Australians; 

how does the convict history affect Australians now; relationship 

then and now between Australia and Great Britain.

economist Joseph Stiglitz. It is composed of focused writings published 

over the past seven years, with each group introduced by a 

new chapter explaining and updating these analytical articles. The 

themes of his diagnosis are the reasons for the changing economic 

conditions of the last thirty years, the economics of increasing 

disparity, the nexus between the vicious circle of political inequality 

and economic inequality, the handling of the 2008 financial crisis,

We will discuss Stiglitz’s analysis of the causes and solutions for the 

increasing divide in the United States. This should make for intense 

and lively debates. 


William Trevor: 

The Collected Stories 

(paperback, 1993) 

(WTS) William Trevor Short Stories 

Irish author William Trevor is best-known for his short stories. Tim 

Adams, a staff writer for The Observer described him as “widely 

believed to be the most astute observer of the human condition 

currently writing in fiction.” According to The New Yorker, “Trevor 

is probably the greatest living writer of short stories in the English 

language.” 

The characters in Trevor’s stories are usually those who cannot 

accept the reality of their lives and create alternative worlds into 

which they retreat. The author’s wry humor offers the reader a 

tragicomic version of the world. 

You will find that one reason that short story S/DGs are so popular 

is the fascinating differences in interpretation by your presenters 

and classmates. 


UNIVERSITY COURSES for OLLI Members 

A program for OLLI members who want to 

participate in University courses. 

Eligibility to enroll in regular campus courses through the OLLI 

University program for a significantly reduced fee is one of the 

membership benefits of OLLI at CSUDH. 

The OLLI University program allows individuals to enroll in regular 

campus classes without being admitted to the University. Transcripts, 

application and other documentation are not required. However, 

instructor permission is required to participate in a course, and 

OLLI University students are accepted on a space available basis. 

The regular Open University fee is $266 per unit, but OLLI 

members may audit courses for only $30 per unit. 

The process is easy. 

1. Pick up an Open University class schedule from the 

Extended Education Registration office. 

2. Find the course you would like to enroll in. 

3. Fill out the registration forms in the Open University 

class schedule. 

4. Bring the completed registration form to the first class 

meeting and ask the instructor to sign the form. 

5. Then return the signed and completed form to Extended 

Education Registration office and pay fees. 

6. You will be enrolled in the course on an audit basis 

and receive an “AU” on transcript for the course. 

Note: Enrollment as an auditor 

means the student does not take tests 

or complete graded assignments. 

At the discretion of the instructor an 

auditor may be required to participate 

in classroom activities.

OLLI is Looking for Volunteers 

If you want to get involved with the university, joining an OLLI 

committee is a wonderful way to make this happen. OLLI is a 

volunteer organization that depends on the involvement of its 

membership to function and grow. We are looking for individuals 

that would like to lend their skills to the day-to-day administration 

of classes, and to planning courses, activities, and publications. 

Five OLLI committees currently exist, and they are… 

Newsletter Committee: members of this committee will publish 

one newsletter each semester: spring, summer and fall. Members 

will write articles for the letter, covering topics such as recent or 

upcoming events, focus on a class, focus on a member, etc. 

Members will also publish a flyer each semester to publicize OLLI 

for the Marketing Committee. 

Marketing Committee: members develop a marketing plan, advertising 

and choosing the appropriate media to promote OLLI. This 

may involve distributing flyers, holding campaigns and contacting 

newspapers with notices of OLLI news and events. 

Event Planning Committee: members are responsible for planning 

special events at OLLI. The special events include the Members 

Meeting, held in the spring, the OLLI Celebration, held in the fall, 

the Juneteenth celebration held in the summer, and other events 

throughout the year. 

Ambassador Committee: members assist with special events, 

reminder phone calls, special mailings, survey reviews, etc. Committee 

members support OLLI instructors in class and represent OLLI at 

designated South Bay events. Committee members are also responsible 

for greeting OLLI members at meetings and special events. 

Curriculum Committee: members develop ideas for courses, 

lectures, computer workshops, discussion groups, and field trips, 

identify instructors from CSUDH faculty, community experts, and 

OLLI members. Develop class schedules, and publish the OLLI catalog 

each semester. 

Other skills are needed and everyone brings valuable knowledge 

and experience to the organization. Look for calls for volunteers, 

or call our OLLI office at (310) 243-3208 to say that you are 

interested in becoming an OLLI volunteer.

Instructor Profiles 

Amlan Chatterjee, Ph.D. 

Desktop Supercomputers 

Dr. Amlan Chatterjee graduated from the 

University of Oklahoma with a Ph.D. in 

Computer Science in December 2014. Prior to 

moving to Oklahoma, he completed his M.S. 

in Computer Science from the State University 

of New York at Buffalo, and Bachelor of Technology in Computer 

Science & Engineering from West Bengal University of Technology 

in India. Dr. Chatterjee’s research interests are primarily in the areas 

of high-performance computing and big-data, with potential collaborative 

work across multiple disciplines. His current projects involve 

analyzing large graphs, specifically online social networks, using commodity 

multi-core hardware such as graphics processing units (GPU). 

Dr. Chatterjee is also a professional member of IEEE and ACM. 

Brian Gregor, Ph.D. 

Virtue, Vice, and the Pursuit 

of Happiness 

Dr. Gregor teaches courses in the history of 

philosophy, philosophy of religion, and religious 

studies. His research concerns the relation 

between religious faith and human subjectivity. 

This interest has motivated his work in post-Kantian Continental 

philosophy (especially in such figures as Kierkegaard, Bonhoeffer, and 

Ricoeur), as well as his interest in ancient and medieval models of 

ethical and religious formation. His first book, A Philosophical Anthropology 

of the Cross: The Cruciform Self (Indiana University Press, 

2013), focuses on philosophical interpretations of the cross and their 

significance for understanding what it means to be human. He is currently 

working on the sequel, which will focus on religious practice 

and the art of living.

Chet Hanley, retired, 37-year teacher, program 

coordinator, and administrator for the Los 

Angeles Unified School District. Former lecturer 

in the College of Education, CSUDH. Currently 

a lecturer for DHTV at CSUDH, teaching a class 

entitled Jazz in the Modern Era, which is broadcast on Cable Station 

LA36, and the internet.

Brenda is an inspired songwriter who 

has written songs recorded by Aretha 

Franklin, Ray Charles and Prince. 

She is also a gifted vocalist, and has 

performed with some of the most 

important artists in American music 

history: Stevie Wonder, Diana Ross, 

Donny Hathaway, Roberta Flack, 

Graham Nash and the inimitable 

Ray Charles. 

Like so many other greats, Brenda 

began her musical career in church. 

With a secure partnership between 

her music and her spiritual path, 

she moved to Chicago and landed 

the coveted female lead with Jerry 

Butler’s Motown group, and was 

featured in his famous hits “Ain’t 

Understanding Mellow” and “(They 

Long To Be) Close To You.” 

What makes Brenda such a powerful 

writer and lyricist is her understanding 

of the relationship between 

storytelling and the song. Every song 

retains a compelling narrative – a 

deep sense of humanity encapsulated 

in the melody and lyric. 

Brenda has also penned several 

theatrical shows, and collaborated 

with Catherine Kinsman and Ben 

Dowling to write the musical Spiral, 

about civilization and its relationship 

with nature and indigenous cultures.
