GÖTEBORG<br />

Every year more and more international<br />

students come to Göteborg to explore<br />

a different country and culture. Those<br />

who were here last year still remember<br />

a great year of making new friends, attending<br />

parties, lots of traveling around<br />

in Sweden, and the joy of visiting a traditional<br />

so called “After Work” in a cozy<br />

restaurant a dark winter evening. However,<br />

summer holidays are over and<br />

a new group of excited exchange students<br />

has arrived to discover Göteborg.<br />

They will face Swedish traditions like<br />

“Lucia”, “Julbord and Julmust” as well<br />

as “Midsommar and Strawberry Cake”.<br />

Prior to their arrival in Göteborg, the<br />

students organized their stay in Sweden<br />

from home. They arrive in town during<br />

the entire month of August. Some arrive<br />

early in order to start with a language<br />

course; others arrive prior to the<br />

start of the reception period of Chalmers<br />

International Reception<br />

Committee (CIRC), or<br />

at the latest, they arrive for<br />

the registration day.<br />

One of these students is<br />

Bernardo Janson, a 21­yearold<br />

ERASMUS exchange<br />

student from Porto in Portugal.<br />

He was one of the last<br />

students to arrive – he came<br />

here on the 25 th of August<br />

and he has planned to stay<br />

for one semester. He made<br />

up his mind to go to Sweden<br />

four years ago, when he started<br />

his studies in Computer<br />

and Communications Engineering<br />

in Porto.<br />

– I was always curious about<br />

Sweden and I know three<br />

Portuguese students who attended<br />

Chalmers, and they<br />

loved it. According to him,<br />

organizing his stay in Sweden<br />

was done “very easily on<br />

the internet”.<br />

In the beginning of the<br />

CIRC period a lot of activi­<br />

ties were on the agenda.<br />

– We attended a Welcome Day that<br />

exceeded all expectations. A lot of people<br />

participated. A Surprise Party and<br />

a volleyball tournament were some<br />

of the events we<br />

enjoyed. We also<br />

took part of a few<br />

nice cultural activities,<br />

like a Swedish<br />

Din<strong>ner</strong> and a trip<br />

to the archipelago.<br />

For those who still<br />

missed some pieces<br />

of furniture or kitchen utensils, a trip<br />

to the Swedish furnishing company<br />

that have student friendly prices, IKEA,<br />

rounded up the entire event. The wellknown<br />

“FestU” organization threw a<br />

party on the 28th of September with<br />

five dance floors, a bouncy castle, and a<br />

lot of extraordinary features.<br />

A reception period like this is not common<br />

in Porto.<br />

– There are a few activities, but nothing<br />

comparable to this. To live in a student<br />

apartment at Olofshöjd where late<br />

night parties at Café<br />

Olof are common, is<br />

a quite different experience,<br />

compared to<br />

living at my parent’s<br />

place that is located<br />

close to the sea, Bernardo<br />

continues.<br />

So far, Chalmers definitely fulfilled his<br />

expectations.<br />

– I liked the CIRC activities and the<br />

fact that everything is well programmed.<br />

In the beginning I was somewhat<br />

uncertain about taking two master program<br />

courses in Interaction Design,<br />

because they are given at Lindholmen<br />

Campus. All my friends study<br />

at Johanneberg Campus, but<br />

on my first day I discovered<br />

the amazing environment<br />

Lindholmen Campus offers.<br />

I think it resembles Porto in<br />

many ways with its proximity<br />

to the water. Sitting in the<br />

sun at the Lindholmen ’harbor’<br />

watching ferries come<br />

and go while having lunch<br />

is one of the specialties of<br />

Lindholmen Campus. It is<br />

also very easy to communicate<br />

with people when relaxing<br />

on the quay, Bernardo says.<br />

His plans for his stay in<br />

Sweden are to travel around<br />

when possible. Finally he<br />

says that he would like to<br />

stay in Göteborg during the<br />

second semester to do his<br />

Master’s Thesis in cooperation<br />

with a company.<br />
