GÖTEBORG
Every year more and more international
students come to Göteborg to explore
a different country and culture. Those
who were here last year still remember
a great year of making new friends, attending
parties, lots of traveling around
in Sweden, and the joy of visiting a traditional
so called “After Work” in a cozy
restaurant a dark winter evening. However,
summer holidays are over and
a new group of excited exchange students
has arrived to discover Göteborg.
They will face Swedish traditions like
“Lucia”, “Julbord and Julmust” as well
as “Midsommar and Strawberry Cake”.
Prior to their arrival in Göteborg, the
students organized their stay in Sweden
from home. They arrive in town during
the entire month of August. Some arrive
early in order to start with a language
course; others arrive prior to the
start of the reception period of Chalmers
International Reception
Committee (CIRC), or
at the latest, they arrive for
the registration day.
One of these students is
Bernardo Janson, a 21yearold
ERASMUS exchange
student from Porto in Portugal.
He was one of the last
students to arrive – he came
here on the 25 th of August
and he has planned to stay
for one semester. He made
up his mind to go to Sweden
four years ago, when he started
his studies in Computer
and Communications Engineering
in Porto.
– I was always curious about
Sweden and I know three
Portuguese students who attended
Chalmers, and they
loved it. According to him,
organizing his stay in Sweden
was done “very easily on
the internet”.
In the beginning of the
CIRC period a lot of activi
ties were on the agenda.
– We attended a Welcome Day that
exceeded all expectations. A lot of people
participated. A Surprise Party and
a volleyball tournament were some
of the events we
enjoyed. We also
took part of a few
nice cultural activities,
like a Swedish
Dinner and a trip
to the archipelago.
For those who still
missed some pieces
of furniture or kitchen utensils, a trip
to the Swedish furnishing company
that have student friendly prices, IKEA,
rounded up the entire event. The wellknown
“FestU” organization threw a
party on the 28th of September with
five dance floors, a bouncy castle, and a
lot of extraordinary features.
A reception period like this is not common
in Porto.
– There are a few activities, but nothing
comparable to this. To live in a student
apartment at Olofshöjd where late
night parties at Café
Olof are common, is
a quite different experience,
compared to
living at my parent’s
place that is located
close to the sea, Bernardo
continues.
So far, Chalmers definitely fulfilled his
expectations.
– I liked the CIRC activities and the
fact that everything is well programmed.
In the beginning I was somewhat
uncertain about taking two master program
courses in Interaction Design,
because they are given at Lindholmen
Campus. All my friends study
at Johanneberg Campus, but
on my first day I discovered
the amazing environment
Lindholmen Campus offers.
I think it resembles Porto in
many ways with its proximity
to the water. Sitting in the
sun at the Lindholmen ’harbor’
watching ferries come
and go while having lunch
is one of the specialties of
Lindholmen Campus. It is
also very easy to communicate
with people when relaxing
on the quay, Bernardo says.
His plans for his stay in
Sweden are to travel around
when possible. Finally he
says that he would like to
stay in Göteborg during the
second semester to do his
Master’s Thesis in cooperation
with a company.
