The following set of Preludes, which are written perfectly ad
libitum, comprehend 20 of the most useful major and Minor
Keys, and will be found to embrace almost every kind of
Passage that a Pupil may expect to meet with in the course of
Practice: and as it may frequently happen, that by a sudden
transition from major to a Minor Key in the midst of a musical
piece or composition, the Scholar might be taken by surprise
from his not being sufficiently acquainted with their
distinctions. I would strongly recommend him to preserve in
the practice of each Prelude until he is so far master of them as
to be enabled to play them without the Book. 68
Exemplen användes alltså för att öva passager och figurer i olika tonarter, för att bygga
upp en ”repertoar” av treklanger, skalor och andra figurer.
De 22 preludierna i John Beales A Complete Guide to the Art of Playing the
German Flute från cirka 1815 går under beteckningen ”cadenzas” på titelbladet. 69 En
stor del av preludieexemplen från denna period skulle också kunna användas som
exempel på enklare solokadenser. Det är värt att notera att dessa läroböcker inte
innehåller exempel på solokadenser som uteslutande betecknas som sådana.
Joh. Wilhelm Gabrielskys preludier i Ninety Three Progressive Preludes for
the Flute från c. 1825 har liksom Louis Drouëts i 18 Preludes and 6 cadences in the Most
familiar Keys Composed for the Flute från 1829 ett mer romantiskt tonspråk än de ovan

Även artikulationen är i en senare stil med längre bågar och hos Drouët med utskrivna
expressiva accenter och dynamik typisk för det tidiga 1800-­‐talet.
