(computerized 250 points, on Internet 100 point), IELTS of at least 6.5,
including at least 6.5 for the writing, or Cambridge Advanced certificate in
English. This requirement does not apply to students with a Bachelor´s degree
from an English-speaking university, or to students having passed the equivalent
of English level B at a Swedish or Nordic upper secondary school.
Note! This programme will not be given in fall semester 2011, but it will be
given again in the future. The masters programme in systems biology offers a
challenging, multi-disciplinary education for the science student aspiring to be
in the forefront of modern biology. The programme is open both to students
with a biology background and to students from mathematics, engineering,
computer sciences, physics and chemistry, who wish to apply their knowledge
to solving biological systems.
Innehåll
This programme leads to a Master of Science degree with a major in Systems
Biology, which is an excellent foundation for a professional career in different
sectors of the bio-industry and the pharma industry, as well as in academia.
Following the era of sequencing genomes, biology is now moving from describing
phenomena to understanding design principles of biological systems,
entire cells, and even organisms. This move to study biological systems, rather
than individual molecules, is driven by technological advances and close collaboration
of scientists from different disciplines such as biology, physics,
chemistry, engineering, mathematics, and computer sciences. An important
part of systems biology is to analyze the components of a biological system
and their interactions in mathematical terms. Understanding properties of a
biological system in the new field of systems biology holds significant promises
for drug development, treatment of diseases or improving bioprocesses. The
field requires education of what is called "new biologists" that have received
training in more than one discipline. It is foreseeable that industry and academia
in the future will require scientists of this new generation.
The masters programme in systems biology addresses this need and offers
an interdisciplinary and challenging education. The main focus of this programme
is on the cellular level and to a lesser extent on the organism level.
Graduating students are expected to have developed skills in interacting with
other scientific disciplines and in solving of complex biological problems.
There are two alternative entries: Students with a background in biology
or molecular biology will be given an introductory course in programming,
whereas students with a background in other disciplines will be given an introductory
course in biology.
Examen: Masterexamen
Förkunskapskrav: Bachelor´s degree in Science or equivalent in biology,
molecular biology, biotechnology, bioengineering, mathematics, computer
science, physics or chemistry. Students with a biology background must have
taken a course in cell biology. Applicants must prove knowledge of English
B level or English proficiency equivalent to IELTS 6.5 no part under 5.5 or
TOEFL 575 p, TWE score 4.5 is also required.
