Dear recentior of
Södermanlands-Nerikes nation,
TEXT: ANGELICA LINDQVIST FOTO: JONAS LOVÉUS
You have now set foot in a country of perhaps the weirdest traditions
you will ever encounter. Even more so, in Northern
Europe’s first student city, at a nation with traditions stemming
over 400 years back in time. Welcome to the country where
children and adults dance around a flower-embellished penis-pole
in hope of fertility in mid-June every year. Welcome to the city
where every student wastes hundreds of kronor on champagne only
to pour it over each other’s heads on the last of April (after voluntarily
entering a cardboard regatta down the filthy river with a guaranteed
swim). Welcome to the nation that encourages biting your
friends’ songbooks to pieces at the end of every dinner-party. Welcome
to Uppsala and welcome to your new home away from home!
Amanda and I (Angelica) are your International Secretaries
this semester. We’re two of the girls you’ve seen behind the
computers during registration hours. If you still haven’t met us,
you’ll see us many more times throughout the semester making sure
you have the time of your life here!
We’re here for YOU whatever you may need, be it a
fika date, directions to the closest Systembolaget, figuring out how
the medical care works or if you’re in need of our amazing matchmaking
skills. Please don’t hesitate to contact us with any concerns
or questions!
As the semester goes on, you’ll soon notice that the
vibrant student life of Uppsala never ends. There is always a nation
club open, a gasque coming up or a nation-wide event thrown. Just
be careful not to forget that there is so much more to Uppsala than
just the parties. Have a seat at our library for a couple hours of studying
and then why not check out some of the many clubs we offer?
Interested in sports? Contact IF Trikadien. Want to try out your
writing or photography skills? Write for this magazine! Want to try
acting or improve theatre or maybe perform with the spex at our
gasques? Want to sing or play in the orchestra or work in our bistro?
The sky is the limit and no previous experience is required!
Once again, a warm welcome to Snerikes and thank
you for making the winter darkness a little bit brighter for us. I am
however sad to tell you that you won’t be seeing any polar bears
walking the streets. And that Swiss cheese is, well, Swiss – not Swedish.
Sorry.
Lots of love from your International Secretaries,
Angelica & Amanda
