ABSTRACT
NUYAN, Elif. Art of Cinema and Philosophy for Eisenstein and Tarkovsky, PhD.
Thesis, Ankara, 2010
In this thesis, the cinema theory of Eisenstein, which investigates the essence
of art by analyzing its techniques, is compared with the cinema theory of
Tarkovsky which delves into the essence of art by examining its aim.
Both artists have concerns about the state of humanity in the 20 th century.
Eisenstein believes that the Marxist world view will be the saviour of humankind
from its inevitable depression. He emphasises the transforming effect of the art
release of humankind will not come from Soviet socialism which he himself
gladly escaped, due to its oppressiveness. In its crisis period, instead of
imposing an ideology on humankind, Tarkovsky attempts to confront humankind
with themselves by the means of cinema. According to Tarkovsky, an artist is
responsible for confronting men with their own state of being.
Eisenstein, in his theory, primarily focuses on the technical challenges and
emphasises analyzing the challenges of editing. Nonetheless, Tarkovsky
