ABSTRACTM.Sc. ThesisINVESTIGATING THE VOLCANIC LIGHT WEIGHT AGGREGATEFORMATIONS OF AKSARAY REGION AND INDUSTRIAL USAGENükhet ŞAPCISüleyman Demirel University Graduate School of Applied and Natural SciencesDepartment of GeologhyThesis Committee: Prof. Dr. Fuzuli YAĞMURLU (Supervisor)Prof. Dr. Lütfullah GÜNDÜZ (II. Supervisor)Yrd. Doç. Dr. Ayşen DAVRAZYrd. Doç. Dr. Hakan CEYLANYrd. Doç. Dr. Ömer ELİTOKThe research area is Taşpınar Region and its near around. The region was located inthe south of Aksaray City at approximately 27 km away from the city. The baseformation is the old Miocene İnsuyu formation and Gördeles ignimbrite members areobserved place to place in the formation as an interval volcanic level. Late Plioceneaged Kışladağ formation is found in a discordant structure including limestone andclay stone levels on the top of the İnsuyu formation. On the top, II. Phase remnantstuffs of Quaternery aged Hasandağ volcanites are found. This tuff formation containsash, tuff and volcano clastic gravels and it covers the main formation as discordant. In this thesis, ignimbrites formations as a member of Insuyu formation located in theresearch area were experimentally analysed as to be a construction material in civilengineering sector and the research findings were evaluated. The geology of ignimbrites formations was analysed in this research. In addition, inorder to define their use as lightweight aggregates in engineering and industrialapplications, a series of comprehensive experimental analyses were carried outaccording to TS, TS EN and ASTM standards.According to the research findings, it was frankly defined that the ignimbrites couldbe used as lightweight aggregates and in production of cement base compositeplasters and composite mortars.Key Words: Ignimbrite, Lightweight Aggregate, Construction Element, Composite.2008, 141 pagesvi
