In the course of 818 hospitalization episodes, a total of 384 (46%) infection episodes were observed and 79% of these were nosocomial. Febrile neutropenia (FN) was observed in 126 patients having 196 (51%) infection episodes. Acute myeloid leukemia was the most common underlying disease (n=35, 35/126, 27%) in patients with FN. Mean duration of neutropenia was longer in patients with an infection (16.2 days) when compared to those without an infection (8.2 days) (p=0.002). Corticosteroids were used in 215 (26.4%) of the admission episodes. Radiation therapy was performed in 5.1% (42) of hospitalization episodes. Unfortunately, we had no data about granulocyte colony-stimulating factor use in this study. Nonneutropenic episodes constituted 71.4% of all the hospitalization episodes and in 77.3% of these cases an immunosuppressive treatment, including corticosteroids, was used.
