10 14 How do they study? Almost every student of the Economic faculty has heard about the Erasmus program at least once. A lot of us also used the program and tried to study at universities abroad. It is understandable. Who wouldn’t want to know how is everything going in other countries? Almost all students say they would like to leave Ostrava at least for a few months. And yet, we meet foreign students in the University corridors every day and they chose our university voluntarily. They come here to get to know our country. Is it incomprehensible for you? Why did they choose Ostrava? And do they like it here? What is it like to live and study in the Czech Republic? Sokolska 33 figured it out for you. We asked several Erasmus students to evaluate their Erasmus stay in Ostrava. Students who were asked come from Turkey, Portugal, Spain and Poland. They study various modules at the Faculty of Economics. Why did you choose the Czech Republic for the Erasmus program? “Erasmus scholarship is not an everyday opportunity and, for this reason, it is very important to choose the destination very carefully. The priority was study program. I was able to choose from various modules and pick those that most suited me and that are the best for my future career.” ČASOPIS EKONOMICKÉ FAKULTY VŠB-TU OSTRAVA “I chose this faculty because I liked the fact the culture is very different from mine. I also took into consideration the fact that Ostrava is situated in the heart of Europe and this is a great opportunity to enrich culture by visiting all interesting places and cities around Ostrava.” “First of all, I always wanted to visit Czech Republic and just to travel across. Secondly I have got fine references about the Faculty of Economics.” How would you evaluate your studies here? “I must admit that the thought of studying in another country in a foreign language was frightening at the beginning, but we were treated so well that I feel like home now. What I most liked here is that everything is practical, all theory is explained with study cases and this way helps to understand the concepts. I also appreciate so much the way that we were treated, the fact that all persons are very kind and friendly to us.“ “So far I don’t have any complaints. The teachers have empathy of any problems that we might have.” Erasmus students at the Faculty of Economics What are the main differences between educational system at the Faculty of Economics and your home faculty (university)? “Some courses are easier here and some courses spend more time and effort for students and course.” “Overall, I think that the system is pretty much the same.” “The main difference is that the lectures at my university are held in for 150 students and it is difficult to interact with the students and assess their knowledge objectively. At Faculty of Economics, lecturers have the possibility to assess students properly because of the smaller groups.” How do you like Ostrava? Have you attended any cultural or sports events here? Have you visited any interesting locations in the Czech Republic or in the Central Europe? “Ostrava transportation is cheap and easy. The first day after my arrival my feelings about the city were mixed but now I think that it is a nice city.” “I like very much that there is a lot of green places, it is a very good and responsible way of compensating for the pollution of an industrial city. I also enjoyed visiting the former mining town. It is very interesting to find out the history of the city and its evolution. At the beginning of my stay here, Ostrava seemed to be so huge, but now, after visiting it all, it looks so familiar. Stay in Ostrava is an experience I will always remember.” “I have visited Prague, and I loved it. It is a beautiful city, very romantic, has great history and nightlife is also good! Later I will visit Poland, Slovakia, Austria and Germany! Here, in Ostrava I watch every game of the Ostrava basketball team NH Ostrava. I went to an ice hockey game and, every Tuesday and Wednesday, I play basketball close to my hostel.” “First, when I came to Ostrava, I wasn’t impressed very much. Now my opinion changed! Maybe because I’ve found many friends here and the weather became more pleasant too, the
sun is shining and you just are happy that the spring came. Ostrava is an industrial city, so there is a lack of beautiful places. But I like the nightlife. And it is really very active here: especially places like Stodolni Street, Fabric, and Alexandria.” What surprised you during your stay in the Czech Republic? “One thing that cost me quite an effort was getting used to getting up early. Actually Spanish people are a little bit lazy from this point of view. I also enjoyed the Czech cuisine, but I must confess that Marlenka cake is by far my number one and I am surely going to miss it when I leave. One of the things that surprised me was the quantity of beer that Czech people drink.” “Sure, the fact that the bread is not packed and the people can move and choose what they want, and I’ve seen people drop the bread on the floor and then picking it up and put it next to the other, I think a little unsanitary. The hours of lunch and dinner, usually in Portugal, we lunch at 12.30/13.00 and dinner at 20.00/21.00!” “In Lithuania it’s forbidden to drink alcoholic drinks in public and to smoke in café, bars, pubs and clubs. Here it is allowed. In Lithuania we have no trams, so that was a new experience for me. But the biggest surprise was that only few people understand English or Russian. Even in places like banks, where we tried to open an account!” “I was surprised by the amounts of snow and the freezing temperatures in the winter. I expected prettier town and more kind and polite society. Food here is much different than from my country.” How do you perceive Czech people? “Czechs are cold at the beginning but, after a while, they start to smile at you.” “I think people are the same everywhere you go. Czech people are nice and, actually, Czechs and Koreans have a lot in common. But sometimes Czech people seem like they don’t want to meet people from other countries. Or they just do not want their country to change? Maybe.” “Generally Czech people are nice but not helping each other. In the bus I saw many times people don’t help others with heavy luggage or older people to get into the bus/train.
