The Department of Banking and
Financial Markets held the 4th Congress
of Young Scientists, open to
both young scientists and representatives
of research and academic centres
in Poland and abroad.
IV Congress was held under the theme
of “Trust in Social, Economic and
Financial Relations” in Sunny Beach,
Bulgaria, on 7–9 September 2015.
The congress has become a regular, international
meeting for representatives
of economic sciences, offering them an
opportunity to present research results
and exchange opinions. The main theme
of the congress revolved around creating
a strong foundation for economic
and financial stability, both on global
and national scales. The sources of stability
and further growth were sought
in banking and finance, organisation
and management, marketing, economic
policies, and selected interdisciplinary
areas.
The congress attracted participants
from Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia,
Serbia, Ukraine, Bulgaria, Russia,
and Germany. Polish academic centres
were represented by researchers from
the Poznań University of Economics
and Business, the Nicolaus Copernicus
University in Toruń, the University of
Szczecin, the Maria Curie-Skłodowska
University in Lublin, and the University
of Economics in Katowice. The congress
is followed by the publication entitled
“Challenges, Research and Perspectives.
Trust in social, economic and
financial relations”, edited by Prof. Günter
Hofbauer and released by a German
publisher Uni-edition GmbH in Berlin.
During thematic panels, the participants
discussed the issue of trust in
economic sciences. It was indicated
that trust was important for an efficient
financial system, in particular, trust in
the banking sector and financial markets.
Lack of trust may increase the risk
if financial instability, the consequences
of which will also affect the real economy.
On the other hand, the loss of
trust in financial institution contributes
to their destabilisation, leading to impaired
liquidity and a threat of insolvency.
Another issue under discussion was
a growing significance of responsible
business in the area of an organisation’s
communication with stakeholders as
a foundation of long-term relationships.
Trust was also identified as a factor
determining enterprise competitiveness
and a source of competitive advantage.
Discussions also dealt with current
changes in the banking sector and
financial markets, especially evolving
business models of banks, new regulations
of the Basel Committee on Banking
Supervision, the significance of
communication in monetary policies,
transformations in deposit guarantee
schemes following the financial crisis,
and the responsibility of important
financial institutions for the stability
of financial markets. The participants
also talked about early warning systems
in modern central banks, which can
identify major areas of risk threatening
the stability of the banking sector.
The absence of early warning systems
adequate for the current situation was
pointed out. It was argued that they
should be developed in order to build
trust in the banking sector. The speakers
also presented the results of their
research in the area of financial markets
and enterprise and household finance.
The discussion on pension planning as
an element of personal finance management
unfolded. The participants indicated
both advantages and disadvantages
of pension systems in their countries.
Another issue that was raised was trust
in local government, illustrated with the
situation in Poland, and the effect of
trust on the competitiveness of Polish
enterprises.
Over the four years, the congress has
attracted increasing interest from
young scientists, PhD candidates, and
experienced researchers, who want to
discuss their observations, opinions and
conclusions in an international setting.
The congress is also an opportunity to
initiate cooperation between European
centres. The participants expressed their
appreciation of the scientific and social
value of such meetings.
