OITA CITY OUTLINE 2015

Oita city overlooks the Seto Inland Sea at the eastern end of Kyushu, being
geographically blessed with rich green mountains, blue seas and rivers. Since
ancient times, it has played a significant role as a place of strategic importance to
east Kyushu.
With the designation as a new industrial city in 1964, the transition of the core of
the city in 1997 and through the merging of Saganoseki and Notsuharu in 2005, it
has solidified its foothold as the prefectural capital that is full of various charm and
vitality.
In 2015, the face of Oita, the Oita station Funai Chuo Gate Plaza and “JR Oita City”
opened. Also opened were the Oita Prefectural Art Museum and the Higashi
Kyushu motorway between Oita and Miyazaki. The appearance of a new Oita is
steadily emerging.
However, with the decrease in birthrate, the aging population and decline in
population, a decline in local vitality is of concern. For community building, the
local government is seeking the creation of a sustainable and autonomous society
using the characteristics of the region.
Under these circumstances the citizens, who play the leading role in the city
administration, must aim to become a truly abundant city. The five themes are, “The
Oita city that is kind to all citizens”, “A city full of vitality and prosperous creations”,
“Administrational services that work for the citizens”, “Promoting projects that will
give dreams, hope and pride for the future” and “Using the opportunity of the Tokyo
Olympics to promote the area”. We will work actively to make this a reality.
Through this summery, we hope there is a greater understanding of the status and
vision of our city, and we hope for your help to create a further extended municipal
The once-in-a-hundred-year large-scale project in the creation of “the new Oita city” has brought a big change to the city’s history.
In 2015, the Oita Station Funai Chuo Gate Square, the Oita Station Building “JR Oita City” and the Oita Prefectural Art Museum opened.
Connecting the city center to the north and south has created an excursion route, giving new prosperity to the city.
From the latest trends to the artistic culture, content that resonates with a wide range of ages has been put together and dispatched from the center.
“Community development is the development of character.”
The happiness of the young people responsible for the next generation fills the city.
Working on protecting the citizens from disasters.
Developing a safe and secure city that begins with
regional cooperation.
災 害 とは、 思 わぬ 時 に 訪 れるもの。
1 通 信 指 令 センター( 消 防 局 )Communication Command Center (Fire Department)
The center has a large multi-monitor set up to simultaneously confirm the situation of
vehicles and images of Oita city in order to arrive at the scene of a fire or emergency
3 救 命 講 習 Lifesaving Classes
To an environment where each person’s individuality is
nurtured and they never forget “learning”.
These lifesaving classes are regularly held to learn cardiopulmonary resuscitation
and how to use an AED in case of emergency.
Disasters come when you least expect it.
For that reason, we have increased disaster prevention awareness with disaster
prevention training in communities and schools. We are prepared for such times
with the latest equipment in emergency and disaster systems.
さまざまな 環 境 を 整 備 して 取 り 組 んでいます。
We want to be a society that encourages the feeling of wanting to learn for every age.
With that wish, we have developed a variety of environments for people of all ages to
nurture their individuality and sensibilities.
The Pledge of Oita Citizens
This spring-like hometown, Toyo no Kuni Oita City is aiming to
become “a nature-rich people’s city” where western culture
flourished from. We, the Oita citizens, hold a limitless amount of
affection and pride for this city and pledge the following to
create a better city.
1. We will love nature and create a nature-rich city.
2. We will have enjoyment for working and create a city full
of vitality.
3. We will help each other and create a city with an
understanding of everyone’s wellbeing.
4. We will love our hometown and create a city where
people can be joyful and live at ease.
5. We will open our eyes to the world and create a
progressive city with different cultures.
Established on July 14, 1983
Oita Peace City Declaration
Permanent world peace is a common hope for all of humanity.
However in recent years, the expansion of nuclear weapons
continues still, gravely threatening world peace and humanity.
Our country was the first country affected by the nuclear bomb.
We must keep telling the rest of the world about the terror of
nuclear weapons and the need for abolishing them, in order to
prevent a repeat of the disasters of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. On
the foundation of the ideology of permanent peace stated by
the Constitution of Japan, we the citizens of Oita city will obey
the Three Non-Nuclear Principles and pledge to do our utmost
for the peace and safety of Oita citizens, hereby declaring this a
“Peace City”.
