Be Proud By Kiara Neely<br />
Ian Brown <strong>The</strong> class of 2016 is excited for <strong>Senior</strong> Ian Brown explains, “It means to<br />
graduation; students have had a tough be proud of where you’re from because<br />
time getting through their last year of Brooke Point has a lot of kids from<br />

committed to play a sport at<br />
the college level.<br />
2016<strong>Senior</strong> Athletes<br />
<strong>Senior</strong> Austin Deberry<br />

<strong>Senior</strong>s in the class of 2016<br />
have worked hard and long<br />
during their four years at<br />
Brooke Point. At graduation, the<br />
valedictorian and salutatorian<br />
are recognized for their academic<br />
accomplishments. Meanwhile,<br />
other students have worked<br />
equally as hard throughout<br />
their four years and deserve<br />
acknowledgement. Graduating<br />
seniors such as Joe Nelson,<br />
Ricardo Acosta, and Amanda<br />
Young are leaving BP with the<br />
title of academic<br />
honors under their<br />
belts.<br />
<strong>The</strong>se students<br />
have done many<br />
different things to achieve<br />
success. <strong>Senior</strong> Ricardo Acosta<br />
says that paying attention is one<br />
of his biggest tactics to stay at<br />
the top. “I do most of my learning<br />
in the class room,” Acosta states,<br />
“I try to always make sure I am<br />
paying attention to what the<br />
teacher is saying.” Completing<br />
and turning in work on time is<br />
how senior Joe Nelson keeps his<br />
grades up. He comments, “It’s<br />
not anything that crazy, it’s just<br />
getting your work in on time,<br />
studying for tests. It’s a lot<br />
of little things.”<br />
Many of these students’<br />
accomplishments come<br />
from taking weighted<br />
classes, participating in<br />
extracurricular activities, and<br />
working toward their futures.<br />
Each student has their own<br />
reasons for working so hard.<br />
<strong>Senior</strong> Amanda Young mentions,<br />
“My parents are really supportive<br />
of me working hard. I also stay<br />
motivated by being around other<br />
people who are doing the same<br />
thing, and just seeing it pay<br />
off.” Nelson shared that his will<br />
to succeed, as well as getting<br />
into college encouraged him to<br />
accomplish so much. Acosta’s<br />
competitiveness drove him to<br />
work hard and do his best. “I have<br />
high standards for myself, I feel<br />
satisfied when I get good grades,”<br />
Acosta added.<br />
When students graduate, their<br />
hard work will not go unnoticed,<br />
as it will take them further in life<br />
and lead them to success.<br />

After graduation this June, some students<br />
will be departing to college, some will be<br />
leaping into the military, and other students<br />
will be diving straight into the workforce.<br />
One will be joining the workforce<br />
is senior Jake Harrison who will be<br />
working for Service Authority, which<br />
does maintenance work in Prince William<br />
County. Harrison’s biggest influence<br />
for joining Service Authority was his<br />
grandfather. Harrison explained, “My<br />
grandfather is 75 years old and retired; he<br />
spends every day of his life outside.”<br />
<strong>Senior</strong> Alex Scruggs will become a real<br />
estate agent. Scruggs shares, “Being a real<br />
estate agent will open opportunities for<br />

to fight, if I’m fighting they<br />

Someone once<br />
asked me, “What is<br />
journalism exactly?”<br />
Over the course of four years, I have learned that journalism<br />
is simply a group of students who work together to write<br />
about the news for the student body, staff members, and<br />
even parents. Our class meets for one block period, writes<br />
news articles, and gets involved with the current events of<br />
Brooke Point High School. But that’s not my favorite part;<br />
journalism to me is about the stress and pride in the final<br />
product. Journalism is sharing food with the people sitting<br />
around you. Journalism is a class that I look forward to every<br />
day because I know that the people and the environment<br />
is welcoming. So, “What is journalism exactly?” It’s exactly<br />
where one student can learn responsibility, have fun, develop<br />
new friendships, laugh a lot, and most importantly, feel part<br />
of a family.<br />
As Editor in Chief, this school year has been stressful, to<br />
say the least, but journalism has always been something that<br />
brings me joy. <strong>The</strong> 2015-2016 school year wouldn’t have been<br />
possible without the help of Regan Flieg, who will soon be<br />
Editor in Chief. I couldn’t possibly think of anyone more<br />
hardworking and deserving of such an honorable role than<br />
Regan. Thank you to Julie Gazzoli, who has stayed behind the<br />
scenes with little recognition, but deserves endless praise for<br />
all of her hard work. A big thank you to Ms. Bakum, whom I<br />
owe the <strong>Hawkeye</strong>’s success to. She was thrown into the job of<br />
journalism advisor, and has done so with impeccable grace.<br />
Thank you to my parents who continuously support all my<br />
endeavors.<br />
