MLG-2: DETECTS ANY OBJECT. EVEN THE INVISIBLE.
Diffi cult to grasp – what the second generation of our measuring automation light grids MLG captures, even
when it is practically invisible. Thanks to the “high-speed scan” function extremely fast objects are detected
as well as especially small objects with the function “high measurement accuracy” – and transparent objects,
with the function “transparent mode”. What is just as captivating as the reliable detection: the robust performance,
even under diffi cult conditions. Specifi cally with dust or ambient light. Thanks to a smart assembly
concept and the easy setting of parameters, even the initial operation is so simple, you’ll fi nd it simply impossible
to believe. We think that’s intelligent. www.sick.com/MLG-2

KROHNE introduces OPTIQUAD-EOF
4050 W for the continuous inline
measurement of free fatty acids (FFA),
total polar material (TPM), peroxide
value (POV), moisture or dirt. The optical
spectroscopic analyser system is aimed
at frying and other edible oil as well as fat
applications.
OPTIQUAD-EOF 4050 W measures
directly in the pipe: analysis is achieved
via an optical window mounted in a
standard VARINLINE measuring section.
The readings of FFA, TPM, POV
moisture or dirt are provided instantly for
process control or dynamic control loops
via four 4...20 mA outputs.
Depending on the application,
measurement of anisidine value (AV)
and iodine value (IV) are possible.
Compared to conventional laboratory
methods used to obtain these values,
OPTIQUAD-EOF 4050 W reduces the
need for sampling, sample transport and
handling, and the associated sources of
error and costs.
The optical spectroscopy analyzing
method allows for a wide range of use
in edible oil applications, such as oil
extraction, oil refinement and frying
processes up to oil recycling, as well as fat
processing.
For example, the continuous inline
measurement of FFA content in frying oil
helps to minimize the addition of fresh
oil: the FFA value can be kept below a
defined limit whilst allowing to maintain
a high level of quality. It also provides a
wide measuring range, e.g. 0…98% for
FFA, and an accuracy of RMSEp: ±0,03%
up to ± 1% FFA, depending on the
measurement range.
OPTIQUAD-EOF 4050 W
spectroscopic analysis system consists
of the analyser unit (protection rating
IP65/NEMA4X) and the operating unit,
an industrial PC with touch screen
display for parameterisation and
automatic calibration in a stainless steel
housing (IP65/NEMA4X), optionally
built into a switch cabinet. It uses up to
four measuring methods (transmission,
scattering, fluorescence and refraction)
with up to 12 wavelengths from
ultraviolet to infrared. The underlying
calibration is calculated automatically
from reference data specific to the
application. OPTIQUAD-EOF 4050 W is
the successor of OPTIQUAD-FFA 4050 W.
system (DCS) helps industrial
producers across multiple
industries modernise their plants
and reduce time-to-market.
New system capabilities
include a more productive
design environment to enhance
automation productivity; easier
adoption of new enabling
technologies to improve user
experience; and enhanced
control capabilities to help meet
operational goals.
The latest release of the
modern DCS platform focuses
heavily on improving automation
productivity. The system now
includes pre-built process control
strategies to help users greatly
reduce the effort and risk to deploy
new applications, which helps
improve their time-to-market.
Increased Automation
Productivity: To provide operators
with reliable and accurate
system configuration, the
PlantPAx system now includes
Announcing the release of
the EJXC40A digital remote
sensor, a newly developed DPharp
EJX® series differential pressure
transmitter.
Equipped with two pressure
sensors that are connected with
an electric cable, the EJXC40A
offers superior performance in the
measurement of liquid levels in
large tanks and large differential
pressure with high-pressure fluids.
This new addition to the
DPharp EJX series will meet a wide
range of customer needs.
Development Background
Differential pressure/pressure
expanded estimation, design and
development guides. The updated
documentation and design
capabilities help dramatically
increase automation productivity;
decrease the time required
to deploy a maintainable and
modern system; and reduce lifecycle
costs. New pre-built control
strategies developed within the
library of process objects provide
a consistent user and maintenance
experience.
Improved User Experience:
Leveraging
network
improvements and built-in
mobility, the PlantPAx system
delivers an improved, reliable user
experience. Expanded industrial
Ethernet switches support Layer 3
topologies, enhancing scalability
for a variety of applications.
Smaller control systems can
now be integrated into larger
enterprise networks with a
common, fully supported network
infrastructure.
The network switches include
embedded Cisco technology to
4
integrate and translate operations
technology (OT) and information
technology (IT).
This makes it easier for process
operators to configure and
manage system networks.
The PlantPAx system also now
includes a mobile component that
enables users to create displays
and interact with process data
across any HTML5-compliant
mobile platform. The software is
responsive to the user’s specific
device, allowing operators and
plant managers to access and view
performance metrics and data
analytics in their preferred format.
Enhanced Control: New
built-in control features – such
as integrated PlantPAx model
predictive control (MPC),
alarm management and batch
management – now operate in a
common environment, helping
to improve plant efficiencies and
operational performance.
Control-based PlantPAx MPC
provides the ability to predictably
manage external and complex
Measurement of liquid levels in large tanks and the
differential pressure of high-pressure fluids
transmitters are widely used in the
oil, petrochemical, and chemical
industries in applications such as
oil and gas wells.
By measuring the difference
in pressure at two points in a tank
or pipe, these transmitters can
calculate the level, flowrate, and
density of liquids, gases, and
steam. In applications where a tank
liquid or gas or a pipe fluid cannot
be introduced into the pressurereceiving
unit (diaphragm) of a
transmitter, diaphragm-sealed
differential pressure transmitters
are used.
A transmitter of this type
is connected to two separate
pressure-receiving units by a
capillary tube that is filled with
silicone oil or some other fluid.
Although such transmitters
are capable of precisely measuring
high-pressure fluids with a high
resolution, they are not suitable
for use with large tanks because
of limitations in the allowable
length of the capillary tubes.
In addition, they are not ideal
for fine differential pressure
measurement because the
fluids in the capillary tubes are
susceptible to changes in the
ambient temperature.
Product Features
The EJXC40A consists of two
separate pressure sensors that
are connected to each other by an
electric cable.
Based on the difference in
pressures measured by each
sensor, the EJXC40A determines
the liquid level, flow rate, and
pressure of liquids, gases, and
steam. The EJXC40A is ideal for the
following applications.
1. Liquid level measurements
in large tanks
The electric cable connecting
the two pressure sensors can be
up to 45 meters in length, enabling
the measurement of liquid levels
with very large tanks and tall
distillation columns.
2. Fine differential pressure
measurement
19.3
process disturbances, and
maximise process performance up
to process constraints. This allows
continuous improvements within
the process while reducing waste
and variability.
The updated system also
leverages the recently introduced
batch application toolkit to
help reduce the risk, time and
cost of implementing batch
control systems. Containing
documentation, application
examples and sample code, the
toolkit gives engineers a starting
point to build and maintain a
consistent batch control system.
It also provides flexibility to
customise system elements for
increased functionality.
The expanded capabilities
of this modern DCS platform
continues to improve enterprise
integration, scalability and open
communication via EtherNet/IP
and local support for customers.
cbuys@ra.rockwell.com
Since the two pressure sensors
are connected only by an electric
cable, their measurements are
not influenced by changes in the
ambient temperature.
There is no need to correct for
changes in temperature when
performing fine differential
pressure measurements with gas
tanks and other applications.
This ensures stable
measurements.
3. Measurement with
high-pressure fluids having a
high differential pressure
As the two pressure sensors
can be set to measure different
pressure ranges, the EJXC40A
digital remote sensor can measure
high differential pressures of up to
70 MPa, something that is difficult
to do with a single sensor unit.
The smallest transit time sensor in the world
The world’s smallest transit time
sensor measuring 22 x 32 x 12
mm is ideal for checking presence
and position monitoring in the
tightest of spaces.
At the same time, the device
offers an enormous working range
of 1000mm.
Millimeters can make all the
difference when it comes to
the stability of cranes and lifting
platforms.
When safety is jeopardized,
cranes can tilt or even topple over.
If loads are lifted unevenly, this
can result in strain and damage.
What are needed in these cases are
easily integrated measurement
solutions with a good priceperformance
ratio and first-class
product quality. SIKO has solved
Equipped with Wenglor’s
WinTec technology which allows
for interference-free detection
of black or glossy objects, even at
extreme inclined angles, Wenglor
can confidently claim leadership
in the field of photo electronic
sensors with this new P1KY001
Transit Time Sensor.
The device includes numerous
capabilities which permits
use in complex automation
applications. For example, the
high performance triple-dot
laser diodes (laser class 1) detects
objects with high precision at a
switching frequency of 1000 Hz.
Capable of operating in
temperatures ranging from -40
to +50° C, the P1KY001 is even in
demand in extremely adverse
environments, such as in cold
storage facilities.
Its large 1000 mm working
range, two switching outputs
(antivalent) and the 270 degree
potentiometer assure excellent
performance, complimented by
user-friendly, intuitive operation.
In addition, the two LED
displays which are visible over
nearly all axes provide information
on power supply, switching status
and error diagnostics.
Blinking signals inform the
user if the sensor is contaminated,
has been incorrectly mounted or
has not been properly adjusted to
the object to be detected.
This Transit Time Sensor has
been successfully integrated
and tested in shuttle systems
in automated small parts
warehouses, at manual
workstations in the automotive
industry and in industrial saws
in the woodworking industry, to
mention a few applications.
Wire-actuated encoder for crane arms and lifting platforms
this task by developing the
impressive SG 30 wire-actuated
encoder with its extremely
compact yet robust design and
wide range of applications.
SIKO has developed and
produced innovative wireactuated
encoders for a wide
spectrum of applications with
measurement lengths ranging
from 600 millimeters to 40 meters.
The functional principle of the
wire-actuated encoders is fairly
simple: A measurement wire is
wound onto a drum. When the wire
is pulled out, it causes the drum to
rotate. A sensor connected to the
drum axle records this rotation
and generates a measurement
signal proportional to the wire
movement of the drum, which
indicates the position.
When extending crane arms,
exact position detection of the
supports is essential in order to
prevent the crane or truck from
tilting or toppling over. This is done
by measuring the current values
of the extended supports and
comparing them directly with the
length of the extended crane arm.
This means that complete
extension of the crane arm is only
possible if the supports are also
extended to the maximum width.
Special case: lifting platforms
Wire-actuated encoders are
not only used for cranes operating
at great heights. Optimum
precision is also needed when
extra-long loads have to be
lifted. Wire-actuated encoders
ensure even lifting e.g. of trains,
underground trains or trams
using a lifting platform. Failure
to observe this can cause strain,
which can result in damage to the
entire construction.
Space-saving and resistant to
cold
A redundant system is often
necessary for safety reasons and in
space-constrained situations. With
these precision requirements in
mind, SIKO has developed the SG
30 wire-actuated encoder with its
particularly slim, compact design.
Despite its space-saving size
and lightweight of approx. 500
grams, no compromises have been
made with regard to stability. The
outer housing is made of sturdy
zinc die-casting and the spring
housing of fiberglass-reinforced
plastic.
Another unique feature of the
SG 30 is its wide range of workingtemperatures,
which enables it
to be used from minus 40 to plus
80 degrees Celsius. Four lockable
aeration holes are integrated to
avoid condensation. The wire
outlet has a special protective
seal. The wire pullout is flexible,
so that 100 % alignment with the
extension direction of the outlet is
not absolutely necessary.
The SG 30 has a measurement
range of up to 3,000 millimeters.
A high degree of measurement
accuracy over the whole
measurement range is ensured by
winding the wire on the drum in
just a single layer.
The SG 30 is ready for
connecting encoder types CAN/
CAN-Bus, MWI and MWU. One
particular advantage offered by
the standardized connection
method is the Plug & Play system,
which guarantees swift, easy
installation and immediate use.
been modified to improve
compatibility with CENTUM CS,
CENTUM CS 1000, and CENTUM
CS 3000 hardware and software,
thus easing the system upgrade
process and reducing associated
risks.
(1) Compatibility with existing
cabinets, terminal blocks, and field
instrument cables
The primary components of
a CENTUM system are the human
interface stations (HIS) that serve
as a monitoring and control
interface for operators in a central
control room and the field control
stations (FCS) that control the
actual operation of plant facilities.
Each FCS has a controller
and numerous IO devices that
are connected to valves and the
sensors used to measure flow
rate, pressure, temperature, and
other variables of the production
process.
The functions and shape of
the CENTUM VP R6.03 IO device
have been modified so that it is
fully interchangeable with RIO,
the IO device used with CENTUM
CS, CENTUM CS 1000, and certain
CENTUM CS 3000 systems.
The modified CENTUM
VP R6.03 IO device is thus fully
compatible with the FCS cabinets
and terminal blocks used with
these earlier CENTUM systems.
Upgrading to the new CENTUM
VP IO is simple: just replace the
existing IO module in each FCS
cabinet with the new IO module.
There is no need to reconfigure
the wiring that connects the IO
to sensors and valves. Thanks
to the modifications made to
the CENTUM VP R6.03 IO, users
of legacy CENTUM integrated
control systems can perform quick
and minimum-risk upgrades to
CENTUM VP.
(2) Enhanced compatibility
with application software
developed for earlier CENTUM
releases
CENTUM VP R6.03 has been
modified to ensure enhanced
backward compatibility with the
application programs used with
CENTUM CS, CENTUM CS 1000,
and CENTUM CS 3000.
The HIS graphics and control
logic programs developed for
these earlier CENTUM systems
can also be used with CENTUM VP
R6.03. This allows for increased
efficiency in the use of application
programs, facilitates quick and
minimum-risk system upgrades,
and reduces plant downtime.
In the development of
CENTUM VP, the following
four innovations have been
emphasized:
1. Advanced operation
Empowers operators to make
smarter decisions
2. Smart engineering
A new engineering ecosystem
that delivers certainty and
confidence
3. System agility
Flexibility, adaptability, and
extensibility for plant upgrade
and expansion, changes in
plant operations, and business
exigencies
4. Sustainable plant
Robust pressure-resistant position sensors with pressure up to
500 bar for steel detection
The new MFH series sensor is
suited for flush mounting in
various steels. With its 1.8 mm
sensing range it shows reliable
switching characteristics.
The new operating principle
of this unit is based on a magneticinductive
technology that detects
only ferromagnetic metals (e.g.
steel). It is sealed by means of
an O-ring and a supporting ring
towards the pressure area.
Besides use in hydraulic
cylinders, the sensor is also ideal
for other hydraulic components
such as valves or pumps. MFH
operates reliably for the lifetime
of the cylinder. Furthermore, it is
used in mechanical engineering
processes, e.g. in plastic injectionmoulding
or process industry
applications. Its attractive
price means the sensor can
also be considered for simple
components where this option
used to be too expensive.
The MFH with its standard
M12 housing can be installed
and adjusted on many different
hydraulic cylinders. That is why
most cylinder types are covered by
only one sensor.
Due to its end stop the M9H
allows quick mounting. The
processing / installation time
is reduced if always the same
cylinder type is used.
Discharge limits under control
Liquiline System CA80CR, the
new colorimetric chromate
analyser, supports electroplating
and tanning companies in
keeping their discharge fees at bay
and achieving environmentally
compliant processes.
Documented compliance with
limit values in industrial wastewater
Electroplating
and
tanning companies generate
contaminated wastewater that
must be treated before it can be
released into the sewage system.
These companies often operate
their own wastewater treatment
plants to reduce the contaminants
to limits that meet the stipulated
discharge values. To achieve
these values for chromate, they
require absolutely reliable, precise
chromate (Cr(VI)) monitoring
and full documentation of the
measured values. Liquiline
System CA80CR offers optimum
support for these companies.
It uses the standardised
colorimetric diphenyl carbazide
method ensuring compliance
with discharge regulations. The
analyser also features detailed
logbooks that provide continuous
documentation of the chromate
values.
Detailed monitoring of chromate
reduction
Chromium VI compounds
are highly toxic and must not end
up in surface waters under any
circumstances. Liquiline System
CA80CR enables effective online
monitoring of the treatment
process and thus allows precise
supervision of the integrity of
ion exchangers and membrane
filtration systems.
It also supports optimised
dosing of reducing agents such as
sodium hydrogen sulfite and helps
plant operators to swiftly rectify
process disturbances remotely
via its advanced diagnostics
using modern communication
protocols. Liquiline System
increases the safety of the
chromate reduction process.
Precise chromate measurement
in potable water
Liquiline System CA80CR also
offers waterworks the security that
no chromium(VI) will end up in the
distribution network and supports
them in providing detailed
documentation of the chromate
values to the water authorities. The
World Health Organisation (WHO)
stipulates a total chromium limit of
0.05mg/l for potable water.
Low reagent consumption and
simplified maintenance
Operating costs of a
colorimetric analyser is dependent
on the consumption of reagent
and calibration standards over
its lifetime. Liquiline System is
designed with highly precise
dispensers for reagent dosing to
guarantee reduced consumption.
The reagents of Liquiline System
CA80CR last up to 3.5 months at a
measuring interval of 10 minutes.
Automatic cleaning and
calibration functions ensure
that the analyser and its sample
preparation work reliably and
without manual intervention
over a longer period of time.
Maintenance tasks can be carried
out easily and with minimal tools,
reducing maintenance costs and
increasing process uptime.
Easy operation and commissioning
Liquiline System shares the
user-friendly operation that plant
personnel already know from
other online analysis parameters
such as pH or turbidity as it has
the same hardware and software
interfaces - operating errors are
virtually eliminated. The analyser
can be easily upgraded to a
complete measuring station by
connecting Memosens sensors.
Liquiline System then adopts
the transmitter functions, which
reduces the total number of
devices in the plant.
Memosens communication
also allows full control of the
sample preparation systems by
the Liquiline System analyser,
speeding up commissioning
and operation. The CAT860 and
CAT820 sample preparation
systems are perfectly adapted to
the rough conditions in industrial
wastewater as they feature
chemically stable membrane
pumps and hoses and corrosionresistant
ceramic filters.
Liquiline System chromate
analysers and sample preparation
systems help managers of
electroplating and tanning plants
to comply with strict discharge
limits and keep discharge fees
under control, while making daily
life easier for operators.
Tasteful water: Iron control optimised
Drinking water not only has
to be free from harmful
substances and tolerable but
must be aesthetically pleasing and
tasteful.
At concentrations commonly
found in drinking water, dissolved
iron is not harmful to human
health. However because it
impairs water taste and color,local
authorities stipulate strict
containment limits for iron.
Elevated iron concentrations
can also lead to build-up
of deposits and settling of
microorganisms in distribution
systems and household water
supplies.
This is undesirable for
consumers and utilities
responsible for treatment of water
for industrial processes, as iron
deposits can cause corrosion
or encrusting of pipes, turbines
and vessels leading to expensive
repairs or even complete system
replacement.
With the Liquiline System
CA80FE, waterworks and plant
managers can rely on highprecision
online monitoring of
iron.
The analyser uses the
standardised ferrozine method
to deliver regulation-compliant
measured values and features
detailed logbooks that allow
comprehensive documentation of
the iron values.
Plant managers are well
prepared for audits and can prove
compliance to water authorities at
any time.
Saving energy in iron removal
Iron removal is acchieved by
oxidising iron to form iron oxide
hydrate which is insoluble and
can be removed by filtration or
sedimentation.
Liquiline System CA80FE
monitors the iron removal online
and delivers measured values fast
– helping to optimise the control
of air blowers and thus save energy
in the oxidation process. Fast
measurements also help plant
operators to detect potential
process disturbances quickly and
advanced diagnostics with remote
access support them in prompt
analysis and remedy.
Low reagent consumption and
optimised maintenance
Liquiline System analysers
are designed with highly precise
dispensers for reagent and
standard dosing guaranteeing
reduced consumption and low
operating costs.
Automatic cleaning and
calibration functions ensure
that the analyser and its sample
preparation and reagents work
reliably and without manual
intervention over a longer period
of time.
Maintenance tasks can be
carried out easily and with minimal
tools, reducing maintenance costs
and increasing process uptime.
Easy operation and integration
Liquiline System shares the
user-friendly operation that plant
personnel already know from
other online analysis parameters
such as pH or chlorine - operating
errors are virtually eliminated.
Its integration into process
control systems is also seamless
via Modbus, PROFIBUS and
EtherNet/IP digital fieldbuses.
Additionally, Liquiline System can
be easily upgraded to a measuring
station by connecting up to four
Memosens sensors.
The analyser then adopts the
transmitter functions resulting in
a reduction of the investment costs
in the plant.
Flexible sample preparation
The self-priming version
of Liquiline System CA80 is the
best choice for particle-free
water. It is ready for operation
without any additional settings.
For applications where sample
preparation is needed, the
CAT810/ CAT820 sample
preparation systems are available.
They are fully controlled
by the analyser via Memosens
communication und thus easy to
commission and operate.
Liquiline System CA80FE helps
waterworks and plant managers
keep their water treatment under
control and comply with the strict
regulatory limits, while making
daily life easier for operators.
Heavy-duty connectors for confined spaces
The heavy-duty Heavycon
EVO connectors feature the
patented EVO-Lock system.
This allows flexible adjustment
of the cable outlet direction on
site. The EVO series now includes
the low-profile sleeve housing in
sizes B16 and B24 and a B6-TWIN
housing with two flexible cable
outlets and a lever locking system.
These new products are
particularly suitable for use in
confined spaces.
They are made of robust highperformance
plastic with impact
resistance IK09 and degree of
protection IP66, NEMA 4X. They
are also industry-standardcompatible
and can be combined
with all standard commercial
aluminum housings.
As well as the new B6-TWIN
housing the product range also
includes TWIN housings in sizes
B10 to B24 with lateral lever lock.
A great advantage of the EVO
19.3
series is reduced storage costs.
Up to 75% reduction in housing
size because the matching cable
glands with bayonet interlocking
allow both a lateral and a direct
cable outlet direction with one
housing.
seanh@phoenixcontact.co.za
Reliable level
detection in
hazardous
areas
LMT sensors reliably detect
levels in storage tanks in
explosive areas. They can be used
in zones 2 and 22.
The sensor with its high-quality
housing materials such as highgrade
stainless steel (316L / 1.4404)
and PEEK meets all requirements
for hygienic areas. This includes
approvals such as EHEDG and FDA.
The LMT can be adjusted to
almost all liquid and viscous media
as well as powders.
The distinction between two
media in the same application
is possible due to the two
switching outputs which can be
set independently. Convenient
parameter setting is made via IO-
Link.
Applications for these sensors
include liquids, viscous media and
powders.
Radar level measurement with four switch points
The Kobold NGR that works on
the principle of Time Domain
Reflectometry (TDR, also known
as guided Microwave or guided
Radar) and offers a robust and lowmaintenance
solution for level
measurement and monitoring.
Conventionally, capacitance
level meters have been used in
small tanks. The disadvantages of
capacitance level meters are their
dependence on medium dielectric
constants and a specific probe
calibration in tanks. NGR offers a
more cost-effective alternative,
eliminating these disadvantages
and offering a minimal dead
band of just 25 mm at process
connection.
The NGR offers a standard
reaction time of better than 400
ms and can detect level changes
19.3
of up to 500 mm/s without any
problems. The advantages of NGR
in small tanks are unmatchable.
Unlike older technologies,
TDR offers measurement readings
that are independent of chemical
or physical properties of the
process media and a measuring
performance that is not affected
by the density or conductivity of
the fluid, making it consistently
accurate even for deposit-forming
and foaming liquids. The NGR
offers a cost-saving solution for
accurate level measurement and
monitoring in oil- and waterbased
fluids, coolants, grinding
and hydraulic oils or blends
containing cleansing, degreasing
and cleaning agents. The NGR´s
easy to read display and menu
guided operation allows realtime
level and status information.
The analogue output is flexible,
using either 4-20mA or 0-10V
switchable, with two or optionally
four PNP/NPN outputs.
The NGR has a stainless steel
probe with a maximum shipping
length of up to 2000 mm that can
be easily changed (users may
adapt the length to install their
own probe - up to 4000 mm) or cut
to length. Commissioning is also
made easier by the sensor`s ability
to simulate levels even when no
fluid is present.
NGR is suitable for applications
including factory automation,
machine tool and machine
building, water and process
industries, building services and
plant engineering etc.
Push-in terminal blocks in desk design for considerable space
savings
The new PTS 4 terminal block
range saves a lot of space
due to its compact and angled
design. Angled conductor entry
is required in particular for
underfloor wiring systems.
The front connection enables
wiring in a confined space. Up to
four conductors can be connected
quickly and easily using Push-in
connection technology. Wiring
is carried out easily and tool-free
using conductors with ferrules or
solid conductors.
A high degree of flexibility for
potential distribution, e.g., of a
three-phase system or for testing,
is provided thanks to up to four
function shafts. A test point is also
available on all terminal blocks.
The terminal block range
consists of two, three, and fourconductor
terminal blocks with
ground terminals, all of which are
the same shape.
The terminal block range
also features large-surface
marking options. Uniform Clipline
complete system accessories are
also used, which reduces logistics
Hybrid laser analyser for continuous gas analysis
Announcing the release of
the Rosemount CT5100
continuous gas analyser, the
world’s only hybrid analyser to
combine Tunable Diode Laser
(TDL) and Quantum Cascade Laser
(QCL) measurement technologies
for process gas analysis and
emissions monitoring.
The CT5100 is the latest
offering in the CT5000
series, providing the most
comprehensive analysis available
as it can detect down to sub ppm
level for a range of components,
while simplifying operation and
significantly reducing costs.
Unlike traditional continuous
gas analysers, the CT5100
can measure up to 12 critical
component gases and potential
pollutants simultaneously within
a single system – meeting local,
state, national, and international
regulatory requirements.
The CT5100 operates reliably
with no consumables, no infield
enclosure, and a simplified
sampling system that does not
require any gas conditioning
to remove moisture. The new
gas analyser is ideally suited for
process gas analysis, continuous
emissions monitoring, and
ammonia slip applications.
The increase in regulatory
requirements worldwide, along
with the decrease in experienced
personnel in industrial plants, have
paved the way for the emergence
of a new generation of faster,
more accurate, and easier-touse
measurement technologies.
The CT5100 represents an
important next step in that
direction, providing unmatched
sub-second response time for
precise, reliable measurement of
complex gases and emissions to
ensure regulatory compliance and
prevent costly fines or unexpected
shutdowns.
The CT5100 is a unique
combination of advanced
technology, high reliability, and
rugged design. Its “laser chirp”
technique expands gas analysis
in both the near- and mid-infrared
range, enhancing process
insight, improving overall gas
analysis sensitivity and selectivity,
removing cross interference, and
reducing response time.
The laser chirp technique
produces sharp, well-defined
peaks from high resolution
spectroscopy that enable
specificity of identified
components with minimum
interference and without filtration,
reference cells, or chemometric
manipulations.
The CT5100 was designed
to give the plant more for less.
Solid-state components and
the unique modular design with
up to six lasers inside a single
enclosure simplify start up and
commissioning and reduce field
maintenance costs during the
analyser’s lifecycle.
A sensor for any situation
single sensor delivers reliable
A measurements of low and
high conductivity values.
The same sensor can be
used in the laboratory, process
development and in the process
itself. This is all possible with the
new Memosens CLS82D fourelectrode
conductivity sensor. Its
EHEDG-certified aseptic design
for applications with the most
stringent hygiene requirements is
also globally unique.
Particularly in the life sciences
industry, conductivity must be
measured over a wide range;
from average to high values in the
process to low values in rinsing
processes with ultrapure water.
The new Memosens CLS82D four-
electrode conductivity sensor is
the right choice.
Sensors with four electrodes
compensate for the polarisation
effects that occur at high
conductivity values and lead
to inaccurate measurement
results. Compensation ensures
consistently reliable values over
the entire measuring range. The
new Memosens CLS82D fourelectrode
conductivity sensor is
not only exceptionally reliable and
accurate but also offers certified,
aseptic design.
Reliable products and
processes
A unique feature of the new
Memosens sensor is its innovative
sensor element made from
ceramic with platinum electrodes.
The advantage of these materials
is their similar temperature
expansion behavior. Even during
extreme temperature changes the
material bond stays tight so that no
gaps occur at any time. The device‘s
unique hygienic design not only
guarantees cleanability but also
aseptic hygiene. It has EHEDG and
3-A certification and complies with
the pharmaceutical requirements
of the FDA and USP Class VI.
The Memosens CLS82D
sets new standards in terms
of process safety thanks to its
innovative Electrode Connection
Surveillance. This feature ensures
that a message is immediately
displayed at the transmitter if the
connection between the sensor‘s
electrodes and the electronics in
the sensor head is ever interrupted.
Combined with the advanced
diagnostic functions of Memosens
technology, you benefit from
reliable, end-to-end monitoring
over the entire measuring chain.
Furthermore, data storage directly
in the Memosens sensor head
supports you with documentation
in compliance with all applicable
regulations and ensures
traceability of your data.
Increased plant availability
Using Memosens technology,
process downtime is kept to a
minimum. The sensor’s plug &
play capability means that you
can integrate the Memosens
19.3
CLS82D in your process in the
shortest possible time. This
simplifies commissioning and
maintenance. In conjunction with
the Memobase Plus software, you
can calibrate your sensors in the
laboratory under ideal conditions
for improved sensor and quality
management.
Data consistency from the
laboratory to the process
The new Memosens CLS82D
also allows you to use the same
sensor in the laboratory, the
process development and the
production process. Thanks
to its compact design, a wide
selection of process connections
and reliable values over a broad
measuring range, this sensor
is the right choice for a wealth
of applications. Universal use
of the same sensor guarantees
standardised, simple operation
offering consistent data and
accurate measured values at all
times.
The power of light in industrial process management:
spectroscopy
Process analysis technology
(PAT) is an essential
prerequisite for the management
and control of processes which
is optimal both technically and
economically.
Optical spectroscopy is a
well-established method for
quantifying compositions. It
also allows to maximise the
performance of a system, for
example, the so-called "spacetime
yield": in addition to
the use of "classical" process
measuring technology (flow, level,
temperature, etc.) PAT tools are
increasingly being used to achieve
this aim.
The requirements for PAT are
very different; batch processes
require a temporal extension
of the measurements across all
concentration ranges.
The composition of the
substance on the probe changes
constantly. In continuous
processes, however, the same
composition or the same
concentration often appears in
only one point in the production
chain and the measurements take
place according to the various
process steps.
The ideal state of always
knowing all relevant information
or data would mean a great
expense even in a small plant.
With well-placed PAT measuring
points, on the other hand, a higher
level of control technology can be
achieved and previously unused
potential realized.
The OPTIQUAD optical
spectroscopy systems have been
developed for applications with
milk, wastewater and edible oil and
fat. Typical applications include
the continuous measurement of
protein, fat, lactose and total solids
in milk products, chemical oxygen
demand (COD) in the wastewater
flow of dairies or cheese factories,
as well as free fatty acids (FFA), total
polar material (TPM), peroxide
value (POV), moisture, dirt and
other values in edible oil and fat
processing.
The OPTIQUAD uses optical
spectroscopy to measure the
contents of milk products
continuously and without contact.
In the process, light of varying
wavelengths is coupled into
the product through an optical
window.
The system simultaneously
determines the values of up to
four optical effects (transmission,
scattering, fluorescence and
refraction) which manifest in
different ways depending on the
substances in the product, and
then uses them to calculate for
example in dairy applications the
amounts of protein, fat, lactose
and total solids. The measurement
is tailored to the application with
up to 12 wavelengths from UV to
IR. The measuring cycle lasts only a
few seconds.
Typical applications for dairies
include strategically increasing the
protein content in cheesemaking
milk/vat milk, standardising the fat
content in drinking milk or setting
a constant ratio of fat to protein in
cheese production.
Unlike bypass devices which
are sometimes costly to clean, the
OPTIQUAD M measures without
contact directly in the pipeline: the
system is connected to the process
via a standard VARINLINE process
connection (nominal sizes DN 40
to DN 150).
The measuring section is
FDA-compliant and is cleaned
using CIP. There is no need for
daily recalibration thanks to the
long-term stability of the optical
measurement, which requires no
moving parts.
In addition, operating and
maintenance costs are lowered
as there is no need for chemicals,
reagents or cleaning products.
Operating the device requires no
special knowledge.
Economical submersible waste water pump
The highly efficient range of
Amarex KRT submersible
motor pumps handle municipal
and industrial waste water in
an effective and cost effective
manner.
Taking their cue from previous
models, the engineers have
further improved the operating
reliability and hydraulic efficiency
to squeeze more out of the pump.
By focusing on the typical
operating ranges of waste water
pumping stations the developers
have adjusted the impellers’ free
passages to not only comply with
the applicable standard, but also to
allow the pumps to offer as broad
a range of applications as possible.
Available with four different
improved impeller types, the
submersible motor pumps can
achieve a maximum flow rate of
10,080 m³ per hour and a head of
120 m. With 850 kW of power on
tap, it offers the highest standard
motor power available on the
market today.
Despite this, the electric drives
for these modern submersible
motor pumps are ultra-efficient.
Depending on a system’s load
profile, users can choose a highly
efficient motor variant which
corresponds to the IE3 efficiency
level for standardised motors in
accordance with the IEC-60034-30
standard.
Such motors are particularly
interesting for powerful pumps
with a high start-up frequency.
Two bi-directional mechanical
seals reliably protect the motor
space against ingress of water.
A chamber filled with
environmentally friendly oil
ensures cooling and lubrication
of the mechanical seals even
when gas-laden fluids have to be
pumped.
Generously dimensioned ball
bearings sealed for life support
the stainless steel shaft with a
special focus also being placed
on the design of the cable gland.
Individual conductors stripped,
tinned and sealed in resin ensure
that the cable gland is absolutely
watertight even in the event of
damage to the cable sheath or the
insulation.
This also effectively protects
the pump from short circuits.
To ensure that the pumps can
be easily dismantled even after
years of operation under tough
conditions, all wetted screwed
connections are made of stainless
steel.
For transporting acid waste
water, too, the company also
supplies pumps made from highgrade
stainless and acid-resistant
duplex steel.
Stroke measurement in hydraulic cylinders - say goodbye to
drilling pistons
Whether it’s agricultural
machinery, construction
equipment, or municipal
vehicles, intelligent sensors are
indispensable throughout the
mobile machine market.
Accurately recording
paths and angles is an integral
component of intelligent
operating concepts and functions.
These functions improve not only
the convenience, but also the
safety of mobile machines. Using
intelligent sensors also increases
the performance and efficiency
of mobile machines, allowing
repetitive work processes to be
automated and therefore relieving
machine operators at the same
time.
the cylinder is used to measure the
stroke.
The cable of the Bowden
cable mechanism is mounted in
the piston head. If the cylinder
is extended, the cable, which is
wound up in a cable drum, is pulled
out. The rotation of the cable drum
that is thereby created is detected
without contact by the sensor
electronics and used to calculate
the linear travel. This makes it
possible to detect the position
of the cylinder precisely and
completely at all times.
The magnets that are used to
detect the rotation are scanned
by the electronics through the
pressure-resistant base plate
of the SGH10. The electronics
are fully encapsulated on the
unpressurized side of the system.
This means the entire measuring
system is built into the cylinder
and is optimally protected
from external environmental
and the multi-award-winning
Automotive Oscilloscope Kit.
Pico Technology offers
innovative, high quality and
affordable alternatives to
traditional bench-top test and
measurement equipment,
designed and built under the
19.3
conditions.
This provides a clear
advantage: in contrast to a
measuring system mounted
externally on the cylinder,
the sensor system cannot be
influenced or damaged by
loose parts or by environmental
influences.
Piston drilling unnecessary
Another revolutionary
aspect is the reduction of costs for
integrating the system into the
cylinder. This is because in previous
measuring systems, the sensor
rods had to be integrated into the
piston over the entire measuring
path; this often required long and
highly precise bore holes in the
piston.
This is not only expensive,
but also weakens the structure
of the piston. In the SGH10 stroke
measuring system, just one small
thread is needed in the piston to
mount the cable.
This allows the system to offer
major potential cost savings,
which affects production times
and, ultimately, overall costs for
hydraulic cylinders. The greater
the stroke length, the greater
the potential for monetary
savings. Cylinder manufacturers,
mechanical engineers and enduse
customers reap the benefits.
Also integrates into telescopic
cylinders
Another highlight is that,
in contrast to the alternative
measuring systems described,
the SGH measuring technology
can even be used in telescopic
cylinders.
It provides design engineers
with entirely new options
when developing forwardthinking
assistance systems and
supplemental functions in mobile
machines.
New photoelectric sensor: Bridging the gap
Now products can be counted
and detected on the conveyor
in a way that was not possible
before. Without gaps. Without
delays. The DeltaPac accurately
detects and differentiates
between successive packaging
items on the fly. This ensures faster,
smarter and more economical
production. In other words:
The DeltaPac is a patented
technological world first.
What makes this possible is the
patented Delta-S-Technology®.
The functional principle
of DeltaPac utilizes the edge
contours of objects. In the gapless
transition from one object to
the next, the edges change the
reflectance behaviour of the
package surface. This change in
direction of reflectance is used for
outputting switching signals.
Object contours with radii of
up to 20mm are thus detected
reliably. The high-precision
evaluation characteristic of
DeltaPac ensures detection of
even the smallest changes in
angle.
Vert Energy has been appointed a distributor in Southern
Africa for ASCO Power Technologies.
Vert Energy has been appointed a
distributor in Southern Africa for ASCO
Power Technologies.
Michael Navarria, sales manager for
ASCO Power Technologies (left) with
Vert Energy’s managing director, Grant
Robertson
ASCO power switching
and control components
now form part of Vert Energy’s
extensive range of electric power
generation (EPG) products for
generator set builders, panel
builders and for numerous
applications that require
switching between different
power sources.
Through ASCO, advanced
solutions are provided to
efficiently handle the transfer of
critical loads from a primary to
a secondary and or emergency
source.
These flexible components,
designed for the protection
of critical loads, significantly
enhance Vert Energy’s specialist
solutions service to diverse
sectors, including data, financial
and telecommunications centres,
as well as process manufacturing,
transportation, fire pump
applications and healthcare
facilities.
In the event of an interruption
to electrical power or a complete
power failure, life safety, financial
loss, valuable information and
convenience can be compromised.
Mission-critical applications
depend on reliable automatic
power transfer switches(ATS) to
ensure a seamless load transfer for
continuous power.
For this reason, the range has
been expanded to include ASCO
transfer switches and controls,
along with Froment and Avtron
load banks.
ASCO ATS’s are the only power
transfer switches available that
conform to stringent IEC60947-6-
1 regulations which specify that
transfers at full load for both AC
and DC currents, must be done
seamlessly. This was a compelling
factor for Vert Energy in selecting
this range. According to Michael
Navarria, sales manager for ASCO
Power Technologies, the use of
circuit breakers, contactors and
load break switches commonly
used in industry, are not compliant
with IEC60947-6-1 specifications.
The extensive range of
ASCO ATS’s encompasses the
Series 230, which consists of
an intelligent controller and a
modular load transfer switch that
automatically transfers the load
to the emergency power source.
This happens in the event that the
normal power source is detected
to be under/over voltage, under/
over frequency or phase loss. The
230 Series has a maximum capacity
of 800 A and is available from 208 V
to 415 V, 50 Hz and 60 Hz.
The ASCO 7000 Series is
available up to 4000 A and from
208 V to 600 V.
ASCO surge protection
products complement ATS’s to
ensure optimum protection of
ancillary equipment used in critical
power applications. Froment
and Avtron load banks, which are
designed to replicate working
load conditions, provide electrical
loads for testing power sources
that include generators and
uninterruptible power supplies
(UPS). These devices are also
used to reduce ‘wet stacking’ and
glazing problems in diesel engines
of power generating systems.
Vert Energy is the exclusive
representative in Southern Africa
for other premium electric power
generation brands including,
Leroy Somer alternators, DEIF
generator controls and Covrad
heat exchangers.
The company’s service
to the electro-mechanical
power generation sector also
encompasses a repair and
maintenance facility.
Vert Energy has made a
substantial investment in skills
training to ensure technicians
are able to efficiently service and
support products throughout the
region.
In addition, the company
holds a comprehensive range of
standard products and spare parts
to support the local market.
Highly skilled technicians
assist with inspections,
diagnostics and repair procedures;
re-assembly, installation and
commissioning, as well as the
implementation of preventative
and predictive maintenance
programmes.
New technology turns I/O devices into field logic controllers
(FLCs) for flexible, cost-effective control
Engineers, OEMs and integrators
have struggled for years with
how to balance the cost of PLCs
with their I/O needs, and the new
ARGEE technology solves this
challenge.
ARGEE
empowers
manufacturers to add logic to
compatible I/O devices without a
PLC, driving down the cost per I/O
point and increasing flexibility in
control. The ARGEE environment
is accessible via an HTML5-
compatible web browser, which
eliminates the need for complex
third-party software or licensing
common with PLCs.
Inside the ARGEE
environment, the user can set
condition and action statements
that can be carried out by the I/O
device. The application’s intuitive
de¬sign includes a flow chart,
similar to ladder logic, which
allows for easy programming by
users of all experience levels.
By taking advantage of ARGEE
on Turck’s multiprotocol Ethernet
I/O devices, manu¬facturers are
able to realize a better control
solution – field logic controllers
(FLCs).
FLCs benefit small- to mid-size
OEMs and manufacturers who
are looking to add logic without
investing in a PLC. FLC can be used
in one of three ways:The FLC stands
alone: FLC performs all the logic as
a standalone application with¬out
a PLC.
The FLC backs up the PLC: If
the FLC loses communication with
the PLC, the FLC can take over and
either shut down the process, or
keep the process going.The FLC
and the PLC work together: The
FLC can monitor an application
and send defined variables and
updates back to the PLC.
With FLC powered by ARGEE,
engineers can add control
capabilities and I/O points to
applications without having to
invest in or upgrade a PLC. Because
the I/O devices carry advanced
ingress ratings, logic can move
outside the panel and onto
machines for local control and realtime
performance monitoring.
Specific features of ARGEE
include:
• Toggling bits, utilization
of timers and counters,
performing arithmetic functions,
monitoring of program status via
Segment Coupler 3 with PROFINET
gateway and advanced diagnostics.
Gateway can be configured via web
interface or FDT/DTM frame
No sooner has digital
communication arrived in
the process industry than the next
technological revolution is around
the corner.
Profibus DP is now regarded
as an established standard that is
tried and tested and has become
commonplace in many process
plants. Profinet goes one crucial
step beyond.
This is not a complete
reinvention of the wheel, nor is it a
revolution that brings everything
that has gone before into question.
In fact, Profinet uses the same
tried-and-tested technologies
that proved themselves with
Profibus DP. Evolution would
therefore be a more appropriate
term for this than revolution.
Similarly, plant operators
are presented with good
opportunities to gradually
move into the future and to rely
on future-proof infrastructure
components for modernizations
and new installations with the
Profinet gateway.
Profinet is basically an
industrial Ethernet variant that
has been specifically expanded
to include the Profibus DP
functionality and has already
become extremely well
established in factory automation.
This allows communication at
the control level to be integrated
seamlessly into the rest of
the company's IT landscape.
Communication with Profibus PA
at the field level is implemented via
Profinet gateways.
The specially defined proxy
technology enables simple
and practical integration of bus
systems established in process
automation such as Profibus PA.
From Big Data to the Internet
of Things
There is another reason why
Profinet is the way to the future.
In a process plant, intelligent field
devices generate large volumes of
data.
However, a large part of this
data is currently still untapped.
This data can easily be converted
into concretely useful information
via big data solutions.
The information is then
available anywhere via Ethernetbased
systems, opening up a
wealth of new applications that are
only just beginning to emerge.
The strict separation between
the IT environment and industrial
automation has made consistent
use of this data considerably more
difficult, since the transparency
of the process plant does not go
beyond the control center. Profinet
is the key to eliminating such
limitations.
Significantly Reduced Complexity
A consistently homogeneous
system is of course much less
complex than a heterogeneous
environment consisting of
specialized system landscapes.
Profinet is ideal for eliminating
the previously strict separation
between the automation
environment and IT.
The field level still
communicates according to the
proven protocols, standards, and
technologies, while gateways
create the direct connection to an
industrial Ethernet-based control
level.
The manufacturers of
infrastructure components have
recognized this development
trend and are increasingly starting
to prepare their solutions for the
Profinet environment.
Power Hub with Profinet Gateway
The Power Hub concept
is one of Pepperl+Fuchs' core
technologies. The company has
now thoroughly overhauled this
concept and put the entire product
family on a new foundation.
The keywords here are:
extremely compact design,
different redundancy concepts,
and, for the first time, a Profinet
gateway.
The fact that line redundancy
and the S2 system redundancy
of Profinet are supported is
particularly interesting.
The latter is based on the
principle that a gateway is

27
19.3
connected to two separate
masters via separate
communication paths. The result is
a high-availability system without
the need for additional hardware.
If one communication path fails
due to a cable break, the second
path is automatically used and
communication is maintained.
Profinet also offers system
redundancy for high-availability
communication with up to four
communication paths.
Transparent Communication in
a Compact Format
It is always crowded in the
switch cabinet. The manufacturer
has therefore pulled out all the
stops with the latest generation of
its Power Hub solution to further
reduce the form factor of its
components.
For example, the previous
Segment Couplers 2 and 3 have
been replaced with a new model.
This requires less space while
offering significantly enhanced
functionality.
The new basic Segment
Coupler replaces the previous
Segment Coupler 1. It is only 20
Proficloud.pdf 1 2016/05/27 12:19:08 PM
mm wide and thus four times
smaller than the previous solution.
Up to four fieldbus segments
can be connected.
This reduces the number
of switch cabinets. Because
of the low power dissipation,
active air conditioning is not
required, further improving the
energy performance and system
availability as a whole. The fieldbus
segments also require significantly
less engineering and installation
work.
Remote Configuration and
Explosion Safety
The new Power Hub
allows remote configuration
and diagnostics via a device
type manager or web server.
Configuration tools for integration
into virtually any automation
system are also available.
The advanced diagnostic
module enables the Power Hub to
be incorporated into the ongoing
monitoring of the physical fieldbus
level.
Of particular interest for the
chemical industry is the option
of an intrinsically safe power
supply for Zone 0 – 2 (Division
1/2) hazardous areas and field
devices according to the Ex ia, Ex
ib, and Ex ic types of protection. In
conjunction with the high-power
trunk concept, the Power Hub
allows an intrinsically safe power
supply to the instrumentation
according to IEC 60079-11—and
for a large number of end devices,
even if they are connected via long
cable runs.
DART technology is available
as an alternative. This effectively
prevents ignitable sparks in
hazardous areas.
Due to the high active power
available, DART provides the
intrinsically safe high-power
trunk, the ideal combination of
achievable cable length, multiple
devices, and safety.
Profinet ensures that technical
development never stops. It
does not take much imagination
to envision a possible scenario
in the near future: a field level
networked using Profibus PA that
communicates with the Ethernetbased
Profinet control level via
gateways.
One thing is certain: This future
will start with completely novel big
data applications that have so far
been the stuff of dreams.
The benefits of 80 GHz radar in level measurement
applications
A radar beam with 80 GHz only
reflects from the product surface. A 26
GHz beam also reflects signals from
agitators and internal fixtures.(picture
of Tank)
Small process fittings make 80 GHz
sensors effective on small tanks.(Fig
4 FA)
Two of the process control
industry’s most recognizable
names recently announced
plans to launch 80 GHz radar
instruments for liquid level
measurement.
This development signals
a brave new world in level
measurement, one where radar
can go where it has never gone
before. This
is truly an
exciting era in
automation.
With highfrequency
devices on the
rise, now is a good time to examine
why radar technology is coming
into its own and the benefits
of using these new sensors in
automated processes.
Advancements create
availability
The availability of 80 GHz
radar sensors is a function of
cost and innovation. Microwave
development has advanced to
the point that it’s comparatively
affordable, and the decreased
expense has led to increased use
across multiple industries. Just as
computer hardware prices dipped
low enough to put a PC in every
home, it is now possible to put 80
GHz radar in every plant. This was
thought impossible a mere 20
years ago.
Yet cost wasn’t the only thing
stopping plant operators from
using high-frequency radar before
now. On their own, high frequency
sensors don’t stand up to harsh
process conditions as well as their
lower-frequency cousins, which
are adept at penetrating foam and
performing through condensation
and buildup. However, modern
radar instruments are engineered
to overcome these obstacles
with large dynamic range and
software algorithms that filter out
interference. These innovations
have made the affordable
technology relevant to real
applications.
Now that 80 GHz radar is
available and practical for liquid
level measurement, users should
get accustomed to sensors with
better focus, versatile size, and
enhanced resolution.
Focus
This is the alpha benefit of 80
GHz radar; the one that makes the
others possible. In every process,
signal focus is crucial to accurate
level measurement, and these
new instruments emit the most
focused signals on the market.
Plant operators have
struggled with unfocused radar
for decades. The wide beam
angle of 26 GHz sensors (and 6
GHz sensors before them) made
it difficult for radar signals to miss
agitators, heating coils and other
vessel internals. The reflections
from these installations distorted
the echo curve and users were
forced to make adjustments to
monitor the true liquid level. The
new high-transmission models
have narrower beams that miss
vessel installations—it’s as if
they aren’t even there. That is
welcome news in chemical and
food production, where obtrusive
internals are the norm and space is
at a premium.
Superior focus makes for
accurate measurement without
adjustment, but it also opens the
door for two other major benefits.
Size
Because their focus is amped
up, 80 GHz sensors have small
antennas. The new VEGAPULS
64, for example, has the world’s
smallest antenna and doesn’t
require a large horn to focus its
beam at the measured material.
The instrument’s small size makes
a huge impact, particularly as it
applies to retrofitting. Plants can
now integrate the most advanced
radar devices into their process
without shelling out thousands
for modifications to their vessels.
Smaller instruments, however,
aren’t just good for old vessels;
they can also help manufacturers
stay nimble and marketresponsive.
There’s a trend in the
pharmaceutical and chemical
industries toward batch
production. Batching allows
operators to produce seasonal
and low-volume products with
less financial investment. Small
batches are produced in small
vessels, where conventional
wisdom says using radar is
impossible due to small process
connections. Thanks to the
compact design of 80 GHz radar
sensors, that is no longer true,
and operators no longer have to
sacrifice accurate measurement in
the name of space.
Resolution
Imagine looking at the picture
on a standard definition television
next to that of an HD TV. The high
definition picture would be
clearer, sharper, and more detailed
due to enhanced resolution.
Users will see a similar difference
switching from low-frequency to
high-frequency radar sensors.
When the level of liquid in a
vessel gets low enough, 26 GHz
radar reads the echo from the
material and the echo from the
tank bottom as one echo. This
tells the user the vessel is empty
when it isn’t and presents a natural
handicap to process efficiency.
80 GHz devices measure liquid
down to the last millimetre, giving
users accurate data they can
use to optimize their processes.
Greater resolution is particularly
important for shipbuilders, who
count on precise level in large
ballast tanks.
Conclusion
High-frequency radar sensors
are the next big thing in level
measurement. They are the
proverbial giant leap, a marker
in time after which the process
industry will never be the same.
Their excellent focusing makes
them perfect for vessels crowded
with internals, their small size
makes them ideal for retrofitting
and batch production, and their
unrivalled resolution allows users
to get every last drop of space
from their tanks. The future of level
measurement is here.
Pressure transmitters for any application
Adding more pressure
transmitter versions to a range
of fluid sensors - the compact PT
series was developed to meet the
demanding pressure measuring
requirements in the machine
building sector.
Their robust design allows
high-precision wear-free pressure
measuring and long term
stability even in harsh operating
conditions.
The entire PT series is UL
certified and approved for Ex
areas, as well as drinking water
applications and maritime
applications.
The units are available with
the typical process connections,
various output signal types,
ceramic and metal measuring cells
and in the standard measuring
ranges between -1 to 1,000 bar as
well as in the low pressure ranges
Narrow
switches
for large
distances
The particularly narrow Smart
Managed Narrow Switches are
now available with fiberglass ports
for covering medium and large
distances.
Thanks to two integrated FO
ports (multimode or single mode),
the switches for use in Profinet or
EtherNet/IP applications cover
distances of up to 15 kilometers.
They therefore also enable the
connection of widely distributed
network parts.
Thanks to the integrated
Profinet device, the switches
are ideal for use in control
environments in Profinet
applications. This enables the user
to configure and diagnose the
switch via the controller.
Furthermore, easy device
replacement is also possible
thanks to automatic detection of
the neighborhood relationships
and transfer of the configuration
settings.
When switching to EtherNet/
IP mode, the switch automatically
activates the relevant multicast
functions for EtherNet/IP. This
minimizes multicast traffic in the
Mini PLC’s suitable for varied applications
The Velocio ACE and Branch
series of mini PLC’s have the
smallest footprint of any PLC. At
63mm x 63mm x 13mm Ace is the
smallest PLC on the market. It’s
less than half of the size of the next
smallest PLC.
These pocket sized PLC’s do
not compromise on power or
flexibility despite being so small
and are feature rich and available
in a wide range of models and
configurations. With innovative
features such as …
Subroutines - the ability to
break projects up into manageable
chunks and allow program reuse.
Objects - isolate data and create
logic components to greatly
improve development efficiency,
maintainability and reliability.
Linked Subroutines - specify
that multiple subroutines should
use the same Objects. Maybe
you’ve got an initialization routine
you’d like in one subroutine, and a
process you want in another. They
can share an object, so you don’t
have to pass data between the two.
The real power of the Velocio
PLC’s lies in the development
software for your projects and
logic, the vBuilder. Using vBuilder
you can rapidly create flow chart
and/or ladder logic applications
with a comprehensive function
set that is powerful and easy to use.
vBuilder also warns and displays
errors in real time so there are no
surprises at build.
Velocio also have a software
based HMI/interface where
simplicity is the name of the game.
Velocio want you to get your
application up and running as
soon as possible.
Plug in your programmed PLC
and vFactory will gather your tags,
know which are read-only and
which are writable. You’re ready to
fill pages with graphs, numbers,
labels and value adjustment
tools from vFactory’s simple, yet
powerful set of 12 tools.
These units are programmed
through a standard Mini-USB cable
and require no additional drivers
or tools.
Best of all, both vBuilder and
vFactory are free!
Velocio are serious about
delivering the easiest to use, most
productive PLC’s and software.
All Ace and Branch PLCs come
standard with a super-strong,
2-sided adhesive strip which
bonds well with painted metals,
plastics and glass. This substance is
used to attach skyscraper windows
to their frames.
But, if you want to attach it to
a DIN rail, screws, or bolts you’re
in luck! They have a great add-on
that helps you attach your PLC to
a 35mm Din rail, or #8 screws or
bolts.
Ace PLCs come with small,
high quality spring-cage capture
connectors made for 20-26 AWG
wire. These connectors along
with built in protected inputs and
transistor outputs work well in
most cases, but sometimes you
need something more. In that case,
using a supplied cable, additional
IO boards such as opto-coupled
and relay outputs and even larger
screw expansions can be added in
seconds.
All terminal boards have a
built in mount for 15mm DIN rail
or #8bBolts and connect to IO with
screw-type terminals (30-16 AWG
stranded or solid wire.)
This cheaper, smaller and
easier to use PLC is offered as a
solution to multiple fields, users
and industries.
From the hobbyist and/or
home project enthusiast who
doesn’t require and cannot
afford the complexities and
costs involved in most PLC
deployment options; to system
integrators, industrial engineers
and technicians who need faster,
more flexible and repeatable
deployment solutions.
The radar sensor for all applications in liquids
Setting new standards with 80 GHz
VEGAPULS 64 is the first radar sensor for liquids that operates at a frequency of 80 GHz. This delivers superior focusing of the
radar beam. This means this level sensor can deliver reliable measurements even in vessels with internal installations such as
heating coils and agitators. The narrow radar beam avoids these obstacles altogether and buildup on the vessel wall has no effect
on performance either. The larger the dynamic range of a radar sensor, the wider it’s range of application and the higher it’s
measurement certainty. With the smallest antenna of it’s kind, VEGAPULS 64 is unbeatable for use in small storage or process
vessels.
