on November 16, their target was the Independent Serb weekly
Novosti. It was referred to as a “sanitary problem” which “the Croatian
state has to solve in the name of Croatian people”. 23
The portal Croatian defence reading (Hrvatskoobrambenostivo.com)
stands out for its use of the most brutal hate speech and promotion of
Ustasha ideology. In an article entitled To stay silent before the Chetniks?

Croatia were threatened with violence: “Milorad, come to Vinkovci but
do not come alone…”

On January 10, Marko Jurič, the anchor and editor of a program on
the local z1 television entitled Markov Trg, warned viewers, especially
“mothers with children” to be cautious while walking across the Flower
square in Zagreb where the (Orthodox Serb) Congregational Church
of Transfiguration is situated. He said it was because “some of those
Chetnik vicars might come running from the church and, in the manner
of their notorious slaughters in the past, go on a killing spree on
the prettiest square in Zagreb, which should probably be marked with
signs “Beware, a fierce Chetnik in the vicinity”. Following complaints
from some 300 citizens, the Council for Electronic Media watchdog
suspended the z1 television’s broadcast concession for three days.
But after that the television continued to broadcast discriminatory content.
For example, z1 broadcast opinions that Jasenovac concentration
camp was a “working camp” and that the period of the Independent
State of Croatia (ndh) was a “period of prosperity”, while the Serbian
Orthodox Church in Croatia was “prone to lies” and should not be a
partner in discussions. Actor Božidar Alić, known for his radical rightist
political views, said in the z1 studio that “it was very unfortunate for us
that (the ndh) ended as it did”. He went on to call Partisans “occupiers
of Croatia, killers and cut-throats, an illiterate mob” and branded the
Serbian Orthodox Church a hotbed of Chetnikdom.” He reproached his
fellow actor of Serb origin, Rade Šerbedžija, “for still being alive” and
sent a message to the national minorities that “Croatia does not need
them”, nor does it need “Pupovac’s Chetnik club in the Croatian Parliament”.
Departing from the studio he greeted with the Ustasha salute
“For the homeland, ready”.
One of the most visible promoters of ethnic hatred against Serbs in
the media was Velimir Bujanec, the editor and host of the Bujica talk
