has done, quickly and radically”. Furthermore, newspaper 7Dnevno regularly
publishes discriminatory content in which it rehabilitates Ustasha
and the ndh regime. In one of the articles published on February 19,
Ustasha leader Ante Pavelić was called a “patriot”, while the Ustasha
movement was described as “freedom-loving and ecumenical”.
Glas koncila, a Roman Catholic weekly issued by the Zagreb Archdiocese,
ran a supplement in several instalments which tried to prove that
only several hundred people had died in Jasenovac, mainly from various
illnesses. It called for a removal of the monument in Srb and wrote that
all those who disagreed with the Catholic Church’s assessments of
Cardinal Alojzije Stepinac were “anti-Croats”. 30
As for the commercial mainstream dailies, the greatest number of discriminatory
articles were found in Večernji list (whose editorial policies
are close to the right wing and the Catholic Church), in the columns
by Milan Ivkošić. In early March he published an article titled By saving
Pupovac from prison, Tuđman showed that no one is perfect. In October
Večernji list published an article entitled Once we set up the ‘Croatian
Pits’ company, will the number of Serbs in those pits play a role in discussions
about forming the government?
/1.4 Social networks
Social networks, primarily Facebook, were used as the largest platform
for transmitting most of registered threats and hate speech in 2016.
For example, actor Božidar Alić published in January two short video
clips showing his attempts to persuade his underage son to shout the
Ustasha salute “For homeland ready”. The video was viewed 40,000
times. Next, journalist Velimir Bujanec threatened the government on
Facebook: “I promise you: if you replace Hasanbegović (culture minister)
with Pupovac, the media and the war veterans will give you hell!”
Facebook is also often used to distribute pictures of Ustasha flags and
insignia, local celebrations commemorating the ndh or participation
in rallies wearing Nazi uniforms. 31 Media reported that singer Marko
Perković Thompson took part in a religious round table in a primary
school in Šibenik on April 16. During the event they played his song
Bojna Čavoglave which contains the Ustasha salute “For the Homeland
Ready”. 32 All of this was posted on Thompson’s Facebook page. Radical
right-wing political parties (a-hsp, hčsp, hsp 1861) and war veterans’
organisations (Croatian Defence Forces, IX hos Battalion Rafael Vitez
Boban) frequently used Facebook to spread hate speech on their profiles.
There were other pages with similar content including: “For the
Homeland Ready”, “Black Legion”, “Some of us are still ready for the
homeland”, “Association Urban Right”, “I admit, I am Croat!”, “Inde-
