Time frames<br />
The operating life of a mine can be as short as several<br />
years or as long as several decades, depending on the<br />
volume of mineral resources. It can also be seasonal or yearlong<br />
and shipments can be seasonal if access is difficult.<br />
Overall revenues must also be able to recover exploration<br />
and construction expenses. Several factors affect how long<br />
a mine will operate:<br />
• Commodity price: demand, competition, and prices<br />
for the product in the world’s market<br />
• Production costs and production rates<br />
• Quality: grade and quantity of ore that is economic<br />
to mine in the deposit<br />
• Size and shape of the body of material to be mined<br />
• Best possible economic mining rates<br />
• Mining methods, equipment, and associated costs<br />
• Required depth of mining below surface<br />
• Ground conditions and ability to mine safely<br />
• Location of the mine<br />
With higher metal prices, lower-grade rock becomes<br />
valuable ore. However, when the price of metal is lower,<br />
only the higher-grade rock is affordable to be used as ore.<br />
The value of an ore body can grow or shrink as the demand<br />
and costs evolve and change.<br />
Costs<br />
Mining uses labour, capital, energy and other inputs,<br />
which all cost money. During mine operations, labour is<br />
usually the highest cost. Power supply, fuel and other consumables<br />
such as heavy equipment, drilling gear, spare<br />
parts, etc. are the next greatest expense.<br />
