Foreword
前 言
On the occasion of Hong Kong’s iconic ‘Le French May’ annual cultural festival,
Opera Gallery is delighted to present this diverse panorama of works featuring
artists from our native France. The selection is eclectic, spanning different styles
and movements from post-war and historic classics such as Marc Chagall, Bernard
Buffet, Jean Dubuffet, André Lanskoy and Georges Mathieu to contemporary
masters like Pierre Soulages, Chu Teh-Chun, André Brasilier and Robert Combas.
The month of May à la française, be it passionate or delicate to your liking, is
close to our roots and heart, and we hope to bring to you with this presentation
celebrating art a French touch to everyone’s life.
We are delighted to welcome you, at the time of renewals and lilies of the valley,
a French Maze in which we hope each visitor would wander and find something
they enjoy!

Jean Dubuffet (1901 Le Havre, France - 1985 Paris, France)
is considered the founding father of Art Brut. Dubuffet’s
oeuvre includes paintings, collages, sculptures and
monuments. Retrospectives of his works have been held
at the Palazzo Grassi in Venice, the Tate in London, the
Centre Pompidou in Paris and the Solomon R. Guggenheim
Museum in New York. During the last ten years of his life,
Dubuffet made a series of works with coloured pencil and
felt-tip pen on paper. In the artist’s own words, these works
were ‘excursions of the mind into no man’s land.’
讓 . 杜 布 菲 (1901 法 國 勒 阿 弗 爾 – 1985 法 國 巴 黎 )
是 非 主 流 藝 術 運 動 的 創 始 人 。 他 的 創 作 涵 蓋 油 畫 、

André Lanskoy
安 德 烈 . 蘭 斯 科 伊
André Lanskoy (1902 Moscow, Russia - 1976 Paris,
France) arrived in Paris in 1921 and decided to devote
his life exclusively to painting. He spent several years
involved in the Abstraction movement of the 1940s and
was considered a leading figure of the School of Paris.
Rejecting the austerity of Geometric Abstraction, Lanskoy
opted for a style characterised by lyricism, gestural
spontaneity and immediacy. Lanskoy exhibited regularly in
Paris since the beginning of his career.
安 德 烈 . 蘭 斯 科 伊 (1902 俄 羅 斯 莫 斯 科 – 1976 法 国
巴 黎 ) 於 1921 年 移 居 巴 黎 , 從 此 全 身 心 投 入 繪 畫 創
作 。 他 在 四 十 年 代 曾 參 與 抽 象 運 動 , 是 巴 黎 畫 派 中
的 代 表 人 物 。 他 拒 絕 遵 守 傳 統 的 幾 何 抽 象 , 其 風 格

Marc Chagall
馬 克 . 夏 加 爾
Rubbing shoulders with Fauvism, Cubism and Surrealism,
Marc Chagall’s (1887 Vitebsk, formerly the Russian Empire -
1985, Saint-Paul-de-Vence, France) dreamlike hues and
whimsical subjects distinguished his work from the Cubist
artists of the time. His works can also be found adorning
landmarks such as the Opéra de Paris and the Metropolitan
Opera in New York City. The Musée National Marc Chagall
in Nice was inaugurated in 1973 and retrospectives of his
work have been held in major museums worldwide including
the Musée du Luxembourg, Paris, the Jewish Museum of
New York, the Tate Modern in London, the MoMA in New
York and the Grand Palais in Paris. His works are found
in the most important public and private collections in the
world.

Chu Teh-Chun
朱 德 群
Chu Teh-Chun (1920 Anhui, China - 2014 Paris, France)
moved to Paris in 1955, and turned towards abstraction
and quickly became one of the masters of action painting.
The works of Chu Teh-Chun are expressive, evoking
spontaneous strokes that mirror the artist’s mental
landscapes and are nourished by both Eastern and Western
influences. His work has been exhibited in the André
Malraux Museum in Le Havre (1982), the Taiwan Museum
(1991) and the Hong Kong Museum (1997), the city of
Cannes has organised a triple exhibition tribute in 2004,
the Year of China in France, at the Marlborough Gallery in
New York (2006), the Pinacothèque of Paris (2013) and at
the Fondation Monticelli in Marseille (2014).

André Brasilier
安 德 烈 . 布 拉 吉 利
André Brasilier’s (b. 1929 Saumur, France) paintings,
primarily oil on canvas, reflect the influence of Expressionist
artists as well as the strength and serenity of Japanese
prints. His stylised compositions feature a range of themes
and motifs, notably horses. As he said “Horse, I really
like this animal, as much for its beauty, for the harmony
that it has with nature. In nature, the horse gives a sense
of scale.” His wife Chantal is his lifelong muse and is
portrayed in many of his paintings where he captures an
intimate, deep, loving and enchanted communion. His
works have been exhibited in important institutions such as
the Château de Chenonceau, the Musée Picasso-Château
Grimaldi in Antibes, Russia’s renowned State Hermitage
Museum in Saint Petersburg in 2005 and at the Museum
Haus Ludwig in Germany in 2007.

Pierre Soulages

Pierre Soulages (b. 1919 Rodez, France), was influenced
by prehistoric and Romanesque art. Soulages is one of the
pioneers of post-war Abstract painting and is considered
one of the most innovative painters of the 20 th century.
As of 1979, Soulages devoted himself to what he called
‘outrenoir’ (ultra-black) paintings. “I work with the light
reflected off a black surface. Light is made more dynamic
by the strokes.”

Georges Mathieu

Georges Mathieu (1921 Boulogne-sur-Mer, France - 2012
Boulogne-Billancourt, France) is considered the leader
of the post-war artistic movement Abstraction Lyrique.
Mathieu vehemently developed his theories in favour of
fostering a powerful artistic presence in public institutions,
a part of his legacy, alongside his contributions to painting,
tapestry, advertising and architecture. Mathieu’s works
were exhibited internationally since the 1950s in galleries
and institutions, with retrospectives held at Grand Palais
and Jeu de Paume in Paris.
喬 治 . 馬 修 (1921 法 國 濱 海 布 洛 涅 – 2012 法 國 布
洛 涅 比 揚 古 ) 被 視 作 戰 後 抒 情 抽 象 藝 術 運 動 的 領 導

Bernard Buffet
貝 爾 納 . 布 菲
Bernard Buffet (1928 Paris, France - 1999 Tourtour,
France) was a well-known Expressionist painter and
member of the anti-abstract art group ‘L’Homme Témoin’
(The Witness Man). He was a young man during World War
II, the profundity of which greatly affected his childhood
and stayed with him throughout his life. His restricted
palette, the melancholic nature of his protagonists and
his unique sketched style with its black, angular strokes,
are visible characteristics which embody the contradictions
of the human condition. In 1973, the Bernard Buffet
Museum was inaugurated in Japan. Ever since, the artist’s
work has been featured in the most prestigious modern
art collections around the world including the MoMA,
New York, the Musée d’Art Moderne, Paris and the State
Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow.
貝 爾 納 . 布 菲 (1928 法 國 巴 黎 – 1999 法 國 圖 爾 圖 )
是 著 名 的 表 現 派 畫 家 , 他 還 是 「 目 擊 者 」 反 抽 象 藝
術 團 體 的 成 員 之 一 。 二 戰 時 期 他 仍 然 年 幼 , 但 這 場

Robert Combas
羅 伯 特 . 孔 巴
Robert Combas (b. 1957 Sète, France) lives and works in
Paris. He is one of the founding members of the Figuration
Libre movement that started in the 1980s. References
from popular culture are numerous in his works. Robert
Combas wields images to ‘provoke, that is, to trigger a
reaction in the spectator’. Combas has exhibited prolifically
throughout his career in galleries and museums, not only in
his native France but also all over Europe and extensively
in Asia.
羅 伯 特 . 孔 巴 (1957 年 生 於 法 國 賽 特 ) 居 住 並 工 作 於
巴 黎 。 他 是 八 十 年 代 自 由 具 象 運 動 的 創 始 人 之 一 。
他 的 作 品 經 常 取 材 於 流 行 文 化 。 他 希 望 圖 像 有 「 挑
