做 為 這 次 展 出 最 主 要 的 一 件 作 品 旋 轉 世 界 藝 術 家 刻 意 陳 設 於 展 區 的 地 面
步 入 空 間 後 由 四 部 投 影 機 組 成 的 巨 幅 投 影 馬 上 映 入 眼 簾 當 觀 者 步 入 這 奇 特 的
異 質 空 間 定 神 細 看 位 於 你 腳 下 的 這 些 人 物 則 以 一 種 特 殊 的 比 例 運 動 方 式
進 行 著 周 而 復 始 的 慣 性 卻 不 交 錯 的 魚 貫 行 進 觀 者 身 份 也 突 然 被 轉 換 抽 離 到 高
高 在 上 俯 瞰 人 間 的 造 物 者 視 角 在 這 整 系 列 創 作 過 程 鏡 頭 的 異 化 延 伸 成 為
藝 術 家 冷 眼 觀 察 事 物 的 窗 口 更 是 作 者 意 識 與 知 覺 的 延 伸 過 去 陳 萬 仁 的 影 像

在 創 作 過 程 中 藝 術 家 是 絕 對 的 造 物 者 可 以 藉 由 任 何 的 主 題 與 元 素 擷 取 創
造 出 種 種 可 能 但 陳 萬 仁 清 楚 意 識 到 自 己 是 以 一 個 凡 人 而 非 上 帝 的 姿 態 扮 演
這 工 作 從 作 者 刻 意 將 自 我 妻 兒 展 現 在 作 品 之 內 的 主 動 選 擇 即 可 證 明 做 為
創 作 者 的 意 識 介 入 陳 萬 仁 自 覺 地 從 時 間 的 線 性 軸 上 創 造 一 個 個 的 影 像 迴 圈

The Maker’s Eyes
After a five-year hiatus, Chen Wan-Jen elaborately staged his new solo exhibition
The Still Point of the Turning World at Double Square Gallery. As the curator of this
highly anticipated event, I was privileged to discuss with the artist and take the joy
of first experience before this series of brilliant artworks were made public. What
distinguishes his latest works from previous oeuvre is that the former shifted from
the artist’s habitual horizontal perspective to a bird’s eye view, from which people’s
quotidian routines such as walking and swimming were documented. Such shift of
perspective was inspired by the “aspect-to-aspect” commonly employed in role-playing
video games. Aspect-to-aspect, a seemingly simple act, is the most important element
in this solo exhibition. From the bird’s eye view, the spatial and temporal dimensions
are homogenized because the artist deliberately ceased to explore them. The bird’s eye
view also refreshed the artist’s observation skill, as if the Hawk-Eye system extracts
motions from myriads of temporal fragments and attaches meanings to them. Besides,
the artist captured the one-second fragment of each character’s life with images,
and allowed them to establish sui generis presence in the virtual space he created by
organizing and editing a concatenation of vocabulary that turned the characters into
symbols. In this way, the artist bears more than a passing resemblance to a maker
whose perspective shift transformed the observation process into a creative method.
The combination of the designed perspective and missed opportunities constitutes
the artist’s Weltanschauung. In this sense, the artist put the first question as to whose
perspective was changed through technology.
The Turning World
As the most prominent piece of work in this exhibition, The Turing World is installed
intentionally on the ground of the venue. A giant projection from four projectors greets
the visitors as soon as they enter the venue. Carefully observing this fantastic space,
the visitors may notice the characters beneath their feet invariably moving forward in
a single yet peculiar file without bumping into one another. The visitors’ perspective
is suddenly shifted to the bird’s eye view as that of the Maker. During the creative
process of the whole series, the artist’s camera lens was alienated, becoming not
only the window for him to observe things with detachment but also the extension of
his consciousness and perception. The artist’s previous oeuvre exhibited elaborately
composed calmness and sense of reality, while this new series features his clear mind
after pondering deeply on the nature of things and life.
