The Maker’s Eyes
After a five-year hiatus, Chen Wan-Jen elaborately staged his new solo exhibition
The Still Point of the Turning World at Double Square Gallery. As the curator of this
highly anticipated event, I was privileged to discuss with the artist and take the joy
of first experience before this series of brilliant artworks were made public. What
distinguishes his latest works from previous oeuvre is that the former shifted from
the artist’s habitual horizontal perspective to a bird’s eye view, from which people’s
quotidian routines such as walking and swimming were documented. Such shift of
perspective was inspired by the “aspect-to-aspect” commonly employed in role-playing
video games. Aspect-to-aspect, a seemingly simple act, is the most important element
in this solo exhibition. From the bird’s eye view, the spatial and temporal dimensions
are homogenized because the artist deliberately ceased to explore them. The bird’s eye
view also refreshed the artist’s observation skill, as if the Hawk-Eye system extracts
motions from myriads of temporal fragments and attaches meanings to them. Besides,
the artist captured the one-second fragment of each character’s life with images,
and allowed them to establish sui generis presence in the virtual space he created by
organizing and editing a concatenation of vocabulary that turned the characters into
symbols. In this way, the artist bears more than a passing resemblance to a maker
whose perspective shift transformed the observation process into a creative method.
The combination of the designed perspective and missed opportunities constitutes
the artist’s Weltanschauung. In this sense, the artist put the first question as to whose
perspective was changed through technology.
The Turning World
As the most prominent piece of work in this exhibition, The Turing World is installed
intentionally on the ground of the venue. A giant projection from four projectors greets
the visitors as soon as they enter the venue. Carefully observing this fantastic space,
the visitors may notice the characters beneath their feet invariably moving forward in
a single yet peculiar file without bumping into one another. The visitors’ perspective
is suddenly shifted to the bird’s eye view as that of the Maker. During the creative
process of the whole series, the artist’s camera lens was alienated, becoming not
only the window for him to observe things with detachment but also the extension of
his consciousness and perception. The artist’s previous oeuvre exhibited elaborately
composed calmness and sense of reality, while this new series features his clear mind
after pondering deeply on the nature of things and life.
“It is not what you photographed that matters, but your themes and
your presence.”
—Chen Wan-Jen

However, Chen is clearly aware of the fact that he creates as a mortal rather than God,
which is evident in his conscious choice of presenting himself and his family in his
artworks. The artist created numerous image loops along the linear axis of time as his
conscious intervention, making the characters in the projection miss all the chances
of encounter. This is strongly reminiscent of the Hollywood movie The Truman Show in
which the protagonist played by Jim Carrey is prevented from knowing that he is actually
living in a studio with a huge seaside town setting in a reality television program. In this
heterogeneous space created with images, the characters’ corporeality is pretty unique.
These characters seem to encounter yet have no connection with one another, simply
repeating the indifferent and mechanical movement alone. The detached perspective of
the bird’s eye view arouses the visitors’ desires to watch. The artist also suggests that
we have been watched all the time by monitors and other people and forced to perform
our part for the general audience. Accordingly, the moral aspect of privacy and visual
politics constitutes the second question the artist put in this solo exhibition.
The video installation Deep Royal Blue and the Swimmer Series consisting of five video
vignettes in this exhibition feature a group of swimmers of different age, gender, shape
and figure in the deep, glittering sea. They endlessly repeat their movement in the scene,
as if they are lost in a loop without beginning and end. “I directed and filmed these
nobodies for my own artworks,” said Chen Wan-Jen. As far as the artist is concerned,
the action of filming these swimmers embodied the imagery politics. Who are these
characters? Where are they? Where are they heading to? These are the questions
concerning identities the artist proposed here.
These abstract questions on identity are particularly important in the post-digital era.
Do these swimmers and pedestrians in the world of images the artist created have selfconsciousness?
Or, can the artist’s self-consciousness be presented in its integrity?
Do the spatial dimension and identities the artist constructed embody the one-of-akind
cyberspace he created? Before answering these questions, we should first of all
point out that the cyberspace is artificially constructed, in which the artist keeps each
character neutral, dictates their movement, and confines them to the endless loops.
Their identities and environment are not created by themselves but the imbrication of
images shot from the bird’s eye view with a drone and processed with editing software.
In this sense, how do we define their identities? Perhaps, we may construe their
identities as the coordinates that connect themselves with the world. Associating the
deep blue sea indicated by the artist with the mind of the visitors, we, including the artist
per se, may become characters in the cyberspace from which escape is nowhere on
the horizon, and ergo have no way of reclaiming our true identities in the real world. The
endlessly repeating inertial motions thus unfold in the intricate maze of simulacra.

Heterotopia
On a more specific basis, the artist in such a heterogeneous world is tantamount to
the Maker in a way that he creates heterogeneous spaces by following his personal
inclination and hunch. It is neither a utopia nor a dystopia. In my opinion, the world
Chen created resembles Michel Foucault’s idea of “heterotopia,” a world comprised of
“hetero-” and “-topia.” The fundamental difference between utopia and heterotopia is
that the latter is a physical space that provides a contrast to the real world and thereby
sets a benchmark for negotiating or criticizing the mainstream realities.
In his poem Burnt Norton, T. S. Eliot coined the phrase “the still point of the turning world,”
attempting to achieve the sublimation of human spirituality through the junction between
reality and eternity. As many others have said, this still point refers to the point of God.
Christian theology believes that God is static in contrast to the mutable world. On the still
point, time is condensed into eternity and turned into the kernel of spirit and existence.
At the still point of the turning world. Neither flesh nor fleshless;
Neither from nor towards; at the still point, there the dance is,
But neither arrest nor movement.
And do not call it fixity,
Where past and future are gathered. Neither movement from nor towards,
Neither ascent nor decline. Except for the point, the still point,
There would be no dance, and there is only the dance.
I can only say, there we have been: but I cannot say where.
And I cannot say, how long, for that is to place it in time.
In recent years, video art, together with sound art and performance art, has entered
the mainstream of time-based art. Unlike most video artworks that proceed on a linear
time base, Chen selected the junctions applicable to his artworks from the characters
he filmed with a drone, thereby making them move in continuous loops. If the cyclical
process is what the artist intends to pursue, then the end is only the beginning.
These characters come under mutual influence when steering their own paths, which
implies that they have been synchronized inside the time loops of the fantastic world
underpinned by Chen’s artworks. In my opinion, the time loops approximate Foucault’s
topological concept of “folds.” In the imagery world created by the artist, the being of
images renders themselves the internal folds that transcend their physical existence.
Each character represents a short span of time, and the imbrication of multiple
characters alters the displaced space-time dispositif. An absolutely virtual space is
opened up as a result. It is neither any figment of imagination nor a dreamland. The time
in this virtual space is self-referential, making “staying still” a sort of motion. This is the

first-order meaning that “time” carries in Chen’s artworks. The images you are admiring
are repeatedly driven by the conscious momentum summoned by the artist. In other
words, the time here is meaningful only when its elapsing is self-referential, because, in
this virtual space, what keep the characters moving in the time loops are actually the
entire spatial transposition and the eternal progression and regression of images.
Chen Wan-Jen on the Still Point
Chen meticulously collates his oeuvre created over the past decade and reassembles
his habitual techniques from bits and pieces specifically for the sake of this new solo
exhibition. Self-consciousness, poetic imagination and rational mind on one side, and
the aesthetic inquiry into the essence of space-time on the other, the two strands are
a dead ringer for an entangled, elusive double helix. This is exactly the ultimate cause
that every artist is committed to for a lifetime. Reflecting on himself, Chen realized that
his quotidian existence is his muse. It is not sheer imagination. It is neither a dream
nor any reproduction based on nothing, but a process of creatio ex nihilo in which
observation, feedbacks, reorganization and internalization are done by reference to
real-life experiences. Employing new media though, Chen mostly creates in a claborate
style. To put it another way, he tends to draw his inner sustenance from the laborious
creative process, as if he is producing realistic paintings or figurative sculptures.
The media that Chen applied do not nullify his artworks made of those media. The
artist ingeniously manipulated the time loops underpinned by the perfect fuse of his
aesthetic literacy and conscious observation, enabling his artworks to come into being
from the disintegrated fragments of time. After all, we can steer our path towards the
true essence of things only by observing from the still point.
Just like a well-placed spin jump shot, the shift of perspective marked the coming back
of Chen Wan-Jen, an artist par excellence who is strange but also familiar to us. And
this time, the elaborately created artworks in this solo exhibition even made a more
superb swish!

My encounter with them is based on random timing. Those straight and borderless
roads, going independently on their own. Running or jogging. At this moment, I
capture a second of human time, which makes them travel in circle and in replay. Their
subconscious habits are inherent in their physical movements, becoming the one of a
kind character on stage.
In that second, people carry their past and walk into the future.
No one knows where all this begins, without knowing when to stop. Pettily walking on
their own paths, intersecting, slowly rotating with the world in parallel.

Accidentally, I tried to paint a float.
Those swimming slowly flow between forms of gestures and seek a balance from

At one moment it was the past, and another the future.

What surrounds us is the ocean. An exhaustion of time.

The deep blue sea in the midnight is the one-way lane that tumbles into melancholy.

This is a piece that pays tribute to my initiation work The Reflecting Pool.
Staring into the vast waves and discovering the unwavering principal concerning the
pettiness of oneself and the disappearance of the individual. It never stops the world
from turning. Everything goes on as usual. The sparkling waters, as if looking back in
time, becomes the sung poetry of the paralleled time and space that lay before the
flapping waves with regular patterns, bringing up a déjà vu memory in front of the eyes.

In The Myth of Sisyphus and Other Essays, Albert Camus argued: to an absurd
man, his field is time. (Camus, 1995: 42) This notion refers to someone who
produces action within a limited framework of liberty that is restricted by a
confirmed limitation of time. Camus refers to Sisyphus as the embodiment
of such absurd man. Time is a physical rhythmic cycle, in which the world
operates. Cyclical actions of survival are repeated within the rhythmic loop.
This process constitutes the psychological terrain of Camus’s absurd inference.
Similar viewpoint is manifested in Chen Wan-Jen’s art works. Since the series of The
Unconscious Voyage in 2008 to Window at Tina Keng Gallery, and to You are my only
exception at VT salon in June 2011, Chen’s creative technologies and modus operandi
highly resembles the absurd action of repeatedly pushing the rock. One can see in Chen’s
works there is a forced dichotomy: a sense of desolation versus isolation, exhaustion
versus repetition, and existence versus nihilism Chen’s images created through a form of
cyclical actions. The above mentioned sense lingers without caving – no matter Chen’s
work resides in the streets or online, either digital or handmade, by the eyes or via cable.
These images characterized by “always loop” have no exception. The type of images
ranges from the endless sky, airport boarding area, computer home screen, to seaside
gym, street lanes, and seaport – without any exception, it all becomes the medium
where the artist leverages his massive bulk of body to repetitively demonstrate an
excessively accurate, delicate absurdity and a naked sense of nihilism. “Always loop” is
marked on the exhibition print material for every single piece of work. It is no doubt a
clear reference to the formal language of the imagery itself and has also denoted what
Friedrich Nietzsche referred to as the eternal return (die ewige Wiederkehr), where the
extreme exercise of nihilism comes in the form of eternal repetition, endless googling,
downloading images to remove backdrops, wandering around for photos, and to go
over all the details accurately again and again. Both Sisyphus and Chen Wan-Jen
demonstrates three axes of notions, including survival rhythm, repetitive recursion,
and spatial loop. What meaning does the repetitive rhythm create in practice? How
does the artist realize action? How does he produce rhythm to create linkage in his
everyday life and in the informational space? In this essay, I will try to respond and
explore the state of consciousness in Chen Wan-Jen’s works through the concepts
and quotes from The Myth of Sisyphus and Other Essays, as well as the idea of loop
in computer programming, recursive language, and Henri Lefèbvre’s view on spatial
rhythm and dressage.
Loop, Recursion, and Dressage
Lefèbvre once pointed out “gesture” does not in itself infer meaning. It is rather a spatial
practice. Artistic works are representations of spatial practices. Artists’ works engender

sexes for spaces, shape spaces, and are overlaid on top of its natural value of use.
This notion focuses on the fact that through the gesture and action of the body, social
spaces are appropriated, and culture thus is formulated. In the article “Space: Social
Product and Use Value,” Lefèbvre explored the ability of capitalist space as a means of
production. He noted “Space is a means of production: the network of exchanges and
the flow of raw materials and energy that make up space also are determined by space.
The means of production, themselves a product, cannot be separated from forces of
production, techniques, and knowledge.” 1 In the digital realm, space is an intermediary,
internal, third space – a field formed by a massive volume of bit strings, transistor units,
and semiotic system. Featuring multi-channeled fluidity, the digital space connects to
spaces in parallel to reality. Body that acts in the production of this space must depend
upon computer and programming language to unfold stimulatory practices. This allows
the world system of the subjective self to be directed to bit units and become threedimensional.
In a way, all production practice is a re-presentation of spatialization in the
third space – all bit programs and information transistors in time and in sight construct
and juxtapose with a three-dimensional semiotic system, where the subjective and
objective bodies are in coexistence. In this system, actions of production are completed
by a simple biological act of “click, input, output.” This action creates a link for the binary
interfaces of the individual/collective, perception/consciousness, biology/physiology,
tool/nature, technology/aesthetics, etc. It also interacts through the action of keying
in to create responses such as feedback, expression, involvement, presence, invasion,
deconstruction, and so on, in order to simultaneously open up more multi-dimensional
hybrid spaces. In a completely open field like the digital one, users can at their liberty
enter or delete, go online or offline, and even hack or reboot the system. The awareness
and consciousness toward information exchange relies solely on a simple biological
action. The action not only contains the concept program code as the creative subject,
holds the user as intermediary driving force, and retains the engineering structure
in itself, but also enables a mutually open bi-channel that allows the subjective
and objective bodies to travel back and forth without hindrance. Any language,
text, image, information – once enter the realm of the internet – will immediately
become an open-access source code that can be cracked or freely extracted.
To further the argument, the continuous repetition for the trinity of bodily act “click,
input, output” has appropriated, transported, plied between the semiotics of social
spaces as a means to re-create. What’s worth noting is that not only the production
of information here becomes a cyclical repetition for body actions, but also the many
languages existing in the space of information media are now instantly created through
the process of repetition. Recursion in the computer programmatic language of C++
takes place when a function calls out to a function of the same name to itself. The caller
will first be placed in a memory stack, before it is extracted from the stack to continue

the same function, until the called-upon function has completed the execution of its
task. What’s different from a loop is that no matter it is a direct (calling upon itself) or
indirect (calling others to return to itself) recursion, the process requires a continuous
calling of the original function to complete the recursion – namely, a plying and stacking
of memory. As to a loop, it only happens back and forth within a singular program.
Therefore, this difference in process makes recursion much more consumptive for
the memory, in order to complete the computing calculation. In other words, a loop is
a simple, clear, and concise self-repetition; recursion operates through calling a direct
or indirect parameter of the principal, in order to achieve repetitive, sequential spatial
structure which is constructed by the stacking of memory. Despite the fact that both
recursion and loop manifest themselves in the form of repetition, a loop is a singular,
progressive language, with a comparatively flatter and linear spatial dimension.
Recursion in comparison creates spatial layers and allows a back and forth, bi-way,
repetitive rhythm. What’s also important to note: 1) memory stacking enables recursive
function to construct a sense of space, 2) if the function does not pre-program an end
condition, the matrix will eventually collapse due to infinite stacking.
The imagery sources of Chen Wan-Jen’s works partly came from his shooting of
elementary units in everyday life, partly from post-producing downloaded images from
the internet. The production of each image unit involves with the help of the computer
program: each unit to be taken into several imagery segments, background removed,
and finally completed with continuous looping. Chen then places multiple units into a bit
space and starts the looping repetition. Body technique here is the node that transcends
the boundary of two spaces. From Lefèbvre’s perspective, Chen’s spatial practice in fact:
“its basis is the non-human subjectivity of the spider, who weaves his net, who weaves
and create his network, who secretes his network, his lattice, in the appropriation of
space. They secrete routes and roots: they produce at the same time as appropriating
space. In the beginning was…not the sign, but the body. The materiality, the tactility,
the texture of space is the place...” 2 The spaces in Chen’s work Passage begin with the
artist’s capturing of a wide variety of pedestrians, ranging from different identities, sexes,
and age groups. These pedestrians that travel bi-ways provides a signifying system
that concentrates on the traces of the artist’s subjective laboring, as well as the body
movements of the objective pedestrians and their single-way looping. This massive
amount of bodily traces is pit against a pitch black backdrop. Orientation in this space is
only made possible by the reflection of the walking pedestrians – which means a simple
space is made possible by the horizontal two-way movement of the body gestures.
There is an absence of spatial texture that belongs to a multi-layered structure. The daily
route of exercise is revealed, through the loop of a singular programmatic language,
and via its repetition of back and forth, as well as a flat spatial condition. This route is

secreted and woven by the nodes created by several nameless passerby. This is also
the spatial manifestation that belongs to the action (click, input, output) of the artistic
body.

In Chen’s 2008 works The Unconscious Voyage and Playground, the spaces that he
constructed started to become recursive, where memories were stacked into a multilayered
condition. The presentation called for the multi-layered texture in daily life and
everyday spaces, to construct a visual logic in perspective, but not in any sense logical.
The Unconscious Voyage attempted to indicate a touch of naturalism in the everyday
space, with the use of massive clouds and the removal of all signs of materialism,
such as building structures often seen in everyday life. The non-regular signifier being
repeated in Playground is the mini man jogging in loop on the platform. A breath of
unnatural anti-everydayness is thus rendered through this means of spatial anchoring,
which calls for a recursion that constructs a unique route. As Lefèbvre puts it: “here the
production of space, begin[s] with the production of the body… it can create networks
and links, symmetries and asymmetries. It is able to project beyond its own body those
dualities which help constitute that body.” (Lefèbvre, 1986: 75) In fact, the bodies in
Chen’s images are the “organisms” in the space. The bodies in Chen’s images are able to
orientate only when the body of the artist (as the subject of such artistic labor) repeats
the act of “producing space.” The bodies in the works therefore have a chance to realize
the symbolic space; at the same time, to evoke the viewers and their collective memory
of the everyday life. The process relives a repeated wandering of the body in spaces.
Similar memory stacking enabled by recursive images is referred to as site of “habitus”
by Lefèbvre. It becomes a spatial realization of daily life. Chen Wan-Jen uses the body
movements piled up by habitus and misappropriated signifiers in spatial structures, to
allow a perception related to a lack of time and a non-everyday body realization. This
said perception is made possible by an overt emphasis on the repetition of habitus,
which internalizes the spatial gesture and rhythm.
In his book Rhythmanalysis: Space, time and everyday life, Lefèbvre delineates through
dressage how human beings formulate rhythm by means of body movements and
how we gesticulate on this basis. Gesture is by no means natural – it is constructed by
socio-cultural environment, training, and dressage. One learns how to survive and enter
social groups, nations, or value systems. Body operation in dressage here indicates a
similar process where human being treats oneself in the same way animals are trained.
This process is formulated by sequential repetitions, which are characterized by unique
rhythms:
Breeders are able to bring about unity by combining the linear and the cyclical.
62 63
By alternating innovations and repetitions. A linear series of imperatives and
gestures repeats itself cyclically. These are the phases of dressage. The linear series
have a beginning (often marked by a signal) and an end: the resumptions of
the cycle [reprises cycliques] depend less on a sign or a signal than on a general
organization of time. Therefore of society, of culture. 3

In order words, the subjective creates rhythm by means of spatial realization to become
gesture through loop action and cyclical repetitive training. This process further realizes
an abstract symbol: culture. Lefèbvre explains the operation of rhythm with a trinity
of activity – repose-entertainment: (a) the internal activity of control. Under direction.
Punctuated by pauses (for repose…); (b) complete stop. Internal repose (sleep, siesta,
dead time); (c) diversions and distractions. Rewards. (A packet of cigarettes, a big prize,
a promotion, etc.) 4 The body operation and route constructed by the trinity enables
the objective to seek control and enter into the rhythm of cultural gestures. Despite the
fact that the rhythms are created via repetition, what’s different from habitus is that
habitus is the everyday spatial practice of the body (eg. loop); dressage is the control
and training of the body when entering the real of culture (recursion). In the space of
dressage, the animal (object) through the calling (gesticulation) of the trainer (subject)
repeats cyclical body technique in the spatial route (an internal control/instruction of
activity) and nodes (repose and entertainment) to enter gestures assigned by culture.
These gestures represent how loop action due to memory stacking of commands
(gesturing orders) calls for and returns to the spatial practice that becomes bigger than
the singular repetitive loop. Lefèbvre further argues that the body becomes fictionalized
memory and an unconscious inner brain signal, because of the rhythmization and
gesticulation of the body. Rather than hiding in every scene, the body inside the
rhythmic space does not loop into an overly simplified, materialist object because of
the influence of memory stacking. It instead becomes being-in-the-world in terms of
fleshism, which is a productive spatial practice where everyday gestures are expounded
in this realm and realize a space belonging to the psychic gesture that reconsiders a
recursion and goes beyond fleshism. Chen’s body technique expands in two axes in
his works: 1) the technique loop of the subject of art, 2) the loop of the object of art
and the issuing of order for the memory stack from the subject to form recursive body
acts. The former is similar to the everyday spatial practice of habitus; the latter is the
rhythmic gesticularized practice of dressage. The two both utilize the endless repetition
to complete the misappropriation of the signifier in social spaces and formulate unique
patternation. Slightly different from dressage, the abstractized process Chen’s images
and the small looped object formulated to enter cultural gestures does not present itself
with the assembly of “action-repose-entertainment,” but rather “action-lack of purposeabsurd
stacking of memory.” If culture resides in a multitude of signifying system (i.e.

novels, poetry, music, cinema) and its display of consumptive content is based on the
quality of its medium, we can then say the signifying system in Chen’s works remove
all possibility of directing to repose-entertainment, or we should say Chen leaves the
actual meaning the action should bear in a vacuum. With this process, it accurately dematerializes
all unrelated messages to present the body technique matter-of-factly.
Absurdity that was formulated by linear piling and cyclical repetitive actions becomes
the meaning itself – the same with the present existence Sisyphus expresses in the
mythological space.
Psychic Gesture
In The Myth of Sisyphus and Other Essays, Camus uses the absurd reasoning, absurd
man, absurd creation, and the mythology to initiate the absurd narrative. The emotional
writing at the end of the book, with the images of the ocean and sun, has not only allows
the obscure absurd philosophy to move into an abstracted signification of poetics and
naturalism, but also directs the propositional conclusion of suicide in Camus’s absurd
reasoning to a positive secularism – namely, refusal to end one’s life. These three axes
intertwine into the signifying system the absurd man depended upon for survival. The
rock that never stops to fail down becomes the embodiment of Sisyphus’s rebellion,
which completes him through a never ending repetition, to formulate a psychic gesture
of absurdity and rebellion. Chen’s You are my only exception solo show in 2011 had
incorporated signifiers of the sea, sun, and suicide. The object in the small loop is also
the alien presence of the absurd man. This essay uses the concepts in The Myth of

Sisyphus and Other Essays in juxtaposition, in order to construct linkages between two
modes of critique. This essay also attempts to formulate a mutually connected route
through the secreted texture from the nodes to travel back and forth between mythical
space and the space of images, making this article a literary texture of space that
manifests the physical gesture via the rhythm of the two spaces.

Several objects formulated by the loop of daily actions that coordinate around the
horizontal line. This axis reflects an internal space of the ocean in parallel with the
swimming pool, the dazzling sun in Chen’s image, wandering around without a purpose,
the plastic bag being blown back and forth, an oxymoronic silence brought up by
excessive noises, the overflowing not-knowing-what-to-do that floods the image,
unrealistic urban pastime, the consumption of romance based on a lack of feeling......
The presence of a ferry at a long distance seems to clearly evoke the voice of a burning
consciousness. Except for the heterogeneous spaces of the ocean and the swimming
pool in parallel with one and another, there is not a single observable clue that reveals
the transcendence of the everyday. Module of loop like this evokes our memory of the
rhythm that belongs to the city. Chen Wan-Jen constructs a déjà vu memory mirage:
with these low rhythm, life is “without appeal” as if looking at a 2-minute-40-second
parallel universe through a wormhole. From the fragments of time in chaotic disorder,
the artist attempts to reconstruct the daily images with the sense of déjà vu. Chen’s
technique explains a psychological attitude: the concept of infinity is established on
an absurd psychic status. They are of the everydayness, but not in it. The fragments
of reality in Chen’s works lose all familiar and old characteristics, and thus becomes a
“signal” produced by the artist’s body technique. The fragments of reality creep slowly
into the streets, leisure, daily life, and the natural beings Chen created. Instead of
constructing a spectacle, what is present in the images is only boredom – or one can
put it: a spectacle built upon boredom. Namely, the dual faces of survival. The length of
time has lost its use in these loops of actions. The small loops forever overlapping in
parallel retrieves the vertical depth of the experience related to the action involved, but
at the same time demonstrated a hidden madness. The sight of an infinite paralleling

universe reminds the viewer of what Albert Einstein said: “Insanity is doing the same
thing over and over again and expecting different results.” Sisyphus was punished by
gods for revealing the secret truth of life. For the gods, nothing is more horrifying a
punishment comparing to a repetitive, futile task. Camus believes the tragic element
of Sisyphus’s mythology lies in the fact that the hero was conscious when carrying out
the task, with a clear state of mind that is capable of processing his personal situation,
and the heavy expectation toward success, which eventually brings about insanity and
absurdity. Consciousness calls for a psychic gesture of confirmative statement that
declares “everything is fine.” No matter it is Chen Wan-Jen’s repetitive loop action of
searching, downloading, or removal of image backgrounds when managing his works,
or it is Sisyphus’s self-understanding of the absurdity in his punishment of forever
pushing the rock, both Chen and Sisyphus repeat the action lethargically, without any
appeal in order to seek perpetuity and immortality. Camus pointed out “human will had
no other purpose than to maintain awareness. But that could not do without discipline.
Of all the schools of patience and lucidity, creation is the most effective…It calls for
a daily effort, self-mastery, a precise estimate of the limits of truth, measure, and
strength.” (Camus, 1995: 73) Through a precise control of the lucidity of consciousness
and will, one is able to extract productive nodes from the forever repetitive actions
of the everyday, using the absurd creative gestures given by the subject in practice
and allowing the psychologically futile feelings of absurdity to contradict absurdity
itself, or to fully devote to absurdity. While the objects in the loop image seemingly are
undertaking the assembly of “action-repose-entertainment,” the objects instead form a
rhythm of “action-lack of purpose-absurdity due to the recursion.”
It happens that the stage sets collapse. Rising, streetcar, four hours in the office
or the factory, meal, street car, four hours of work, meal, sleep, and Monday
Tuesday Wednesday Thursday Friday and Saturday according to the same rhythm
– this path is easily followed most of the time. But one day the “why” arises and
everything begins in that weariness tinged with amazement. “Begins” – this is
important. (Camus, 1995: 9)
It is not an absurd work that is involved here, but a work that propounds the
absurd problem. (Camus, 1995: 71)
All that “for nothing,” in order to repeat and mark time. (Camus, 1995: 73)
The pigeons in Formula for Victory are object groups of linear progression, rarely seen in
Chen Wan-Jen’s works. The pigeons in the image are the embodiment of absurdity, an
authentic absurd thing. What is different from Sisyphus is that the pigeons lack passion
and humanity. They are more similar to the character Joseph K in Franz Kafka’s novel
The Trial, who were forced to sprint ahead on a pitch black race track, without knowing

the reason for his action. He bears a flag that signifies the trial against his success
and failure, without knowing the cause he is fighting for. He proceeds toward the same
direction in sequence, engaging flight and fight by turns, stopping and resuming with
a frail rhythm. Although the pigeons in Chen’s work did not end the same way with
Joseph K who finishes his last breath “like a dog” with his throat slit wide open as a vain
inference toward the judgment mechanism, the pigeons however resemble Joseph K
in terms of the bizarre and contradictory life episodes – the calmer the character is, the
more absurd the incidents become in contrast. Attitude-wise, the pigeons manifest a
Kafkian style of bizarreness with a lack of thrill. Action-wise, they are similar to Super
Mario that travels in a liner progression in a horrifyingly unbeatable loop – an immortal
body forever swinging between winning and losing, beating the game and restarting
over. Formula for victory creates a psychical space that enables a psychological
roundabout of weakness and frailty in the reality of life within the spatial signifier. On this
route, there is zero trace of any precise rhythmic node for action-repose-entertainment.
Lefèbvre’s trinity of bodily rhythm formulated by drive-stop-feedback functions as a
videogame with a linear progression, which allows the operator to form a desire toward
replaying within the cyclical route arrangement that travels from node A to B to C.
The gesture emerges from this gaming space is impulse-lethargy- re-driving, namely
a manifestation of the dressage and gaming competition. Extreme exercise Parkour
has the same practice of linear progression in the city. With the body’s continuous
trained action of jumping, climbing, running, and rolling that requires a strict control of
psyche and strength, Parkour achieves a speedy travelling from node A to B, ignoring all
obstacle of the buildings in the way within the shortest period of time. It is fair to say the
feedback node of Parkour is the extreme controllability of the body and psyche, which
invades the rhythm of the city space with the consumption of the body’s micro-quantum
to power the person’s action, and enables a new texture and a network of the body’s
psychic gesture in the city. The texture emerging from the exercise by definition is also
a linear “shaping” whose spatial practice and rhythm production appears through the
symmetry of the body, which holds the purpose of winning the game for triumph. Both
the object of loop in Formula for victory and Sisyphus secret an absurd context of basic
survivalism in the everyday life of men: lack of purpose, the rhythmic beat of impatience
and lethargy, to self-coronate for the curse of repetitiveness. In the route of the game,
when victory becomes a pre-programmed value rather than a probability, the essence
of life or the work will no longer lies in whether to gain victory or not, but the lucidity of
consciousness when clearly acknowledging the impossibility of the task and the absurd
action that combines logic and a false sense of exploration.
In the absurd world the value of a notion or of a life is measured by its sterility.
(Camus, 1995: 45)

For the absurd man it is not a matter of explaining and solving, but of

Kafka uses the description of “like a dog” to depict Joseph K’s psychic gesture of an
absurd human existence in the trial mechanism. Before the gesture is formulated, the
process includes a sequential action and experience of Joseph K being woken up,
arrested, subpoenaed, trialed, escorted, and finally executed. What’s worth noting is
the use of “like” which moves the mechanism from a depiction of reality to abstract
absurdity. Camus once commented: “Whoever would like to represent this absurdity
must give it life in a series of parallel contrasts. Thus it is that Kafka expresses tragedy
by the everyday and the absurd by the logical.” (Camus, 1995: 80) These actions need
to avoid exaggeration – by so doing, the sense of extremity and horrid brought by
dullness will become intensified. The reaction of an obscure, inexplicable, barren and
dry incident confirms the presence of desolation and absurdity. The effect described
above can be seen in parallel in Chen Wan-Jen’s Sweet dream. The behaviors of the dog
and the standing pigeon that occupy the left and the right of the image seem to take
up two completely immobile gestures: utter indifference and doing nothing at all. In a
culture, any gesture has an abstract meaning. Even if artistic works that has zero sense
of purpose, it still serves as the strongest defense for aesthetic value of having no
purpose and being forever in escape. If Kafka sculptured an absurd gesture by a series
of baffling trial, what “Sweet dream” reproduces is an existence of memorial that has
ossified and frozen in construction of the meaningless, after reading out loud all related
action and narrative. Instead of defiantly declaring the absurdity of human psyche, it
presents slightly and neatly like “a dog and a pigeon.”
There is but one truly serious philosophical problem, and that is suicide. Judging
whether life is or is not worth living amounts to answering the fundamental
question of philosophy. (Camus, 1995: 4)
The work of art…marks both the death of an experience and its multiplication.
(Camus, 1995: 61)
But without it [art], that renascence would be without forms and, consequently,
would be nothing. (Camus, 1995:126)
The floating looped object on the surface of the ocean, repeats an image of death. It is
in the middle of nowhere, not up nor down, floating and drowning, tossed by the waves
and a self-generated rhythm. Chen Wan-Jen explained that the piece Pluto’s tears is
inspired by Osamu Tezuka’s manga Astro Boy and titled after Naoki Urasawa’s later
work Pluto that revives Tezuka’s character Astro Boy, as the primary color composition

of the object floating around in Chen’s Pluto’s tears is the same color tone black,
nude, and red with the Astro Boy. A relaxed naming does not dilute the omen that the
looped object resembles a drowning dead body and further enhances a thick quality
of death, due to a hinted plot of resurrection in Urasawa’s Pluto. If the water we see in
the scene is the tears of Pluto, perhaps one can comment in Camus’s tone and say:
the melancholic tears of the subject keeps falling and finally submerge the sea in his
tears. If the appropriation in the work’s title indeed refers to an accident, maybe it also
includes the ultimate philosophical question for Camus’s absurd philosophy: suicide,
survival, death. One cannot tell what the subject of the image is doing. Is this his suicide
to death? Or is he enjoying a purposeless floating? Does the work title connote a death
experience and an image rebirth? Or a leap of logic that has no standard of value?
These senses of absurdity and existence needs to be pointed out in clear direction.
Concept or perception needs to be aroused, or to the very least, it requires a certainty for
hopelessness. However, the impatience and tiredness the situation of being in nowhere
evokes is a psychical confession the absurd gesture Chen’s work insisted on delivering.
A memory and logic judgment of the looped object and the viewer’s memory shows a
void of judgment, a void of answer. There is a void of questionings that belongs to the
philosophical basics concerning survival. What is present is only the ambiguous mime
of life that is always he-said-she-said and impossible to be comprehended. “Pluto’s
tears” has accumulated a philosophical space of suicide due to the pervasive death
symbolism, pushing absurdity and a sense of emptiness to the recursive place as a
practice and giving the viewers a prompt for their consciousness: suspension in midair
has defined an unsolvable anxiety, and how the anxiety precisely retrieves an absurd
and lethargic everyday rhythm when facing mechanic and inorganic movement that
is devoid of meaning. Even so, speaking of death and worldly existence is no doubt a
forever philosophical repetition, since not any single one of us has any real experience
of death for reference. One can only create perceptive illusions by means of art. In these
illusions, due to a lack of answer, anxiety is channeled in. The subject will then fall into
the temptation of a loop which strives to explain how death operates. Perhaps it is
Camus’s psychic gesture that makes him declared: “One does not discover the absurd
without being tempted to write a manual of happiness” and ultimately, “one must
imagine Sisyphus happy.” (Camus, 1995:78)
Absurdity is the relationship of the world and human. In an absurd situation, one
stares at absurdity and survives on. This inartificial psychic gesture that confronts
nothingness and cheers for a lack of meaning is the philosophical concept Camus
tries to deliver through the mythology in The Myth of Sisyphus and Other Essays. It is
also a corresponding strategy of an absurd survival that adopts hopelessness as food.
Sisyphus confirms the curse that brought about repetitive actions. The eternal return

pulls out the contradictory mechanic that belongs to the awakening of consciousness
and is the purest ode to survival, as well as the strongest rebellion in a largest scale
against absurdity and nothingness. I did not simply try to critique Chen Wan-Jen’s
work in juxtaposition with the words of Camus or Sisyphus, or using the Kafkian dog
to present a universal philosophical logic that does not allow exception – although
my process might appear like so. What I instead wanted to reflect is Chen’s physical
action of “click, input, output” that demarcates an absolute psychic gesture during the
creative process of his works. When absurdity is forever stacked up by the repetition
of a precise technical requirement, casual silhouette of life, a glimpse of the everyday,
and a purposeless display of image, the process itself becomes a form of realism that
needs to constantly self-orientate and self-align. Realism is constructed by the image
illusions of culture gestures, which madly repeats itself. The process is absurd, image
monotonous and blunt. Stemmed from such process, the works always successfully
dilutes and tosses out a sense of void as the result of the mechanism without any
exception. Namely, when absurdity is presented with such precision, one can put it
this way: the artist is conscious of the absurdity and at the same time is filled with the
demonstrability of nothingness. However, this demonstrability is not the victory in the
mythology of Sisyphus that was achieved through embracing the curse. It is rather a
process achieved via the display of absurd imageries to reveal a “repeating skillset” and
a “survival gesture” that transcends looping, recursion and rhythm. Lefèbvre pointed
out: “If space as a whole has become the place where the reproduction of the relations
of production is located, it has also become the terrain for a vast confrontation.” 6 One
should not try to understand the spatial production characterized by the body technique
in Chen’s works thought only the replay of the image. One must see Chen’s works
through the lens of a three-fold loop that the artist adopts when arranging the elements
of the images in his works: the subject’s repetition of his daily actions, the object of loop
in repetition, the group objects’ repetition in loop as a sum. This three-folded loop and
recursion has constructed the infinity of absurd rhythm that rebels in the three spaces
of “the everyday-the information-the consciousness.” The process eventually produces
an extreme exercise that will lead to the broke down of the memory body, to reflect our
daily absurd route that belongs to the survival psychic gesture constructed by recursive
spatial signifiers.
