Exploring the Pyrenees
on horseback takes us
back to older times, full
of sensations that can
never be transmitted by
a motor vehicle. It entails
an intimate experience
in contact with nature
With your foot in the stirrup,
one kick, and now your
sitting on a beast that is all
muscle. The ground looks a long way
down, more than two metres away. First
you walk. Then you trot. And then gallop.
There are a few basics to be learned before
you take a mountain route on horseback.
The path will be demanding, but will be far
exceeded by the rewards, the landscapes,
the adventure and the union between
horse and rider.
The relationship with the horse begins
by brushing it. Then comes the time to
adorn it, pack the saddlebags and set off
on your route. The animals retrace their
steps along the Sant Jaume de Llierca
pathway at a walk. They trot a while. Then
cross the river Fluvià and take a tributary,
the Llierca. It’s time to gallop. The
landscape becomes blurred and your heart
beats faster. The rugged and cobbled path
leads you down to the bridge over the
Llierca, a Romanesque arch. On the other
riverbank, each one finds a tree to leave
their saddle. The horses are unsaddled, the
tablecloths are spread out and the
saddlebags emptied. It is time for lunch,
and afterwards you’ll have time to put your
swimsuit on and bathe in a pond. The
afternoon continues along quiet
pathways. Finally the horses are in a
meadow. The harness and the saddle are
put away in case it rains during the night.
The morning is clear. Now the route
follows the Llierca, between vertical walls.
