FATHERS BLESSINGS AND THOUGHTS....
“Why do you look for the living among the dead?
(Luke 24:5)
“I came that you may have life, and may
have it abundantly”. (John 10-10)
Death has always been the focal point of human tragedy.
Science defines death as the cessation of all biological functions
that sustain a living organism. Humans have struggled to prove
nature wrong by creating Pyramids and mummifying people who
were declared immortal. Death however continues to puzzle humans today. This plague
began in the Garden of Eden when God declared that we would begin to die because
Adam lost communion with Life.
The verses above show us that our understanding of life and death are totally
different from that which God considers life and death. Starvation is one of the sure
ways for unavoidable death; when someone is actively dying; the sure sign that death
is near is when the person stops eating and the body starves to death.
Perhaps that is why after creating humans God commanded them to eat. After
the creation was complete God put all of it under human supervision and said “They
will be yours for food” (Gen. 1:23). Apparently, however, food did not only give life
but also caused death because there was something which we were warned not even
to taste.
Both in the Genesis story and the account of Christ’s temptations in the desert
we find clear difference between the “Life Giving Food” and the food that sustains
life only temporarily. In the Garden of Eden, the evil one distracts humanity from the
communion to the source of Life and in the desert Our Lord defeats the evil one by refusing
to turn stones in to bread. Here Christ equates the material food that sustains
our life to the Word of God without which we would starve to death spiritually.
In the Gospel according to St. John, Jesus speaks about food again. This time
he makes it clear that “The Heavenly
Bread” is far superior even to
the manna that the Israelites ate in
the desert: “Your ancestors ate
the manna in the wilderness,
yet they died. But here is the
bread that comes down from
heaven, which anyone may eat
and not die”. (John 6:49-50)

FATHER’S BLESSINGS AND THOUGHTS ....
As we can clearly see Our Lord’s definition of the living and
the dead does not at all coincide with our understanding. The Galileans,
for example, were very much alive in the eyes of their contemporaries,
but Christ said they were sitting in the darkness and the
shadow of death.
On the other hand, He declares that God is the God of the
living because God is the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob who
were dead in the eyes of His oblivious and ignorant audiences but
very much alive and in communion with Him.
In order to understand the whole picture about authentic life and the unnatural reality of death, we first need to
understand the difference between the food that Christ gives us in the form of the Word of God also His Body and Blood
and the food that we seek for every day. Only after recognizing the importance of these two essential necessities for the
fullness of our existence can we understand the meaning of His commandment to his disciples: "Follow me, and let
the dead bury their own dead." (Matt. 8:22) St. Luke adds also this “but you go and proclaim the kingdom of
God". (Luke 9:60) By this commandment they were called to understand that the reason for all evil and death is ultimately
in ignorance and spiritual starvation and that it is their job to deliver the good news of the Heavenly Banquet to
his lost sheep. It is in the Kingdom of God that the Heavenly Bread is distributed to those who are spiritually
starved.
Unfortunately, some find the way and some are led astray; some lose their way in the darkness and some do
not even look for it, many are called but only few choose answer Christ’s call to be chosen. So, the epidemic of secularism
is sweeping through human society today. Those who have deprived themselves of the Living Bread are sitting in
the shadow of death. It is heartbreaking to hear every day the news of dozens of tragic deaths by drug overdoes,
through active shooting in public schools or massive terror attacks in the streets of big cities. In whatever form it may
be if death is forced upon God’s creation, it is invited to fill the space that belongs to Life. The legacy of Cain continues
to distort the image of God and it spreads death among the innocent children of God by those who have lost communion
with the source of Life.
What can we do to stop the raid of the evil one? How can the desire for death be replaced with a desire for Life
in human hearts? Perhaps this was the question His disciples were asking while witnessing His passion and his crucifixion
seeing Life being swallowed by death.
For almost 2000 years the Holy Catholic and Apostolic Orthodox Church travels the journey of the first humans
from the Sunday of the Forgiveness to the Sunday of Resurrection every year during Great Lent and reminds us that the
Lord has said: “I came that they may have life and have it abundantly”. (John 10:10)
Our Mother Church invites us every day to experience:
that the tomb is empty, and Life is triumphant
that the Heavenly Light has overcome the darkness of the grave,
that we cannot prefer darkness like the Galileans
that we all have a journey and like the prodigal son we too need to get up and walk
that like Zacchaeus we are to seek the light diligently
and that when we find the light it will come and dwell in our homes
and that when it enters into our homes it will enlighten our lives
and that we all have a mission in this life
and that we cannot ignore the call to serve Him by hiding the burning lamp under a bushel
And that we are to shine that Light in the world so that all those who see it will not be in the darkness
and the shadow of death anymore but will glorify God who is in Heaven.

Και στα Ελληνικά ....
«Γιατί ψάχνετε τους ζωντανούς ανάμεσα στους νεκρούς; (Λουκάς 24: 5)
«Ήρθα για να μπορείς να έχεις ζωή και να την έχεις άφθονα». (Ιωάννης 10-10)
Ο θάνατος πάντα ήταν το επίκεντρο της ανθρώπινης τραγωδίας. Η επιστήμη καθορίζει ως θάνατο την παύση όλων των
βιολογικών λειτουργιών που υποστηρίζουν έναν ζωντανό οργανισμό.
Οι άνθρωποι έχουν παλέψει για να αποδείξουν οτι η φύση είναι λάθος δημιουργώντας τις Πυραμίδες και μουμοποιώντας
ανθρώπους που κυρήχθηκαν αθάνατοι. Ο Θάνατος όμως συνεχίζει να προβληματίζει τους ανθρώπους μέχρι και σήμερα.
Αυτή η μάστιγα ξεκίνησε από τον Κήπο της Εδέμ όταν ο Θεός δήλωσε οτι θα αρχίσουμε να πεθαίνουμε επειδή ο Αδάμ
έχασε την κοινωνία του με την Ζωή.
Οι παραπάνω στίχοι μας δείχνουν ότι η κατανόησή μας για την ζωή και τον θάνατο είναι τελείως διαφορετική από αυτήν
που ο Θεός θεωρεί ζωή και θάνατο. Η πείνα είναι ένας σίγουρος τρόπος που οδηγεί στον θάνατο, όταν κάποιος παθαίνει
ενεργά, ένα σίγουρο σημάδι ότι ο θάνατος πλησιάζει είναι όταν το πρόσωπο σταματάει να τρώει και το σώμα λιμοκτονεί
στο θάνατο.
Ίσως αυτός είναι ο λόγος που ο Θεός αφού δημιούργησε τους ανθρώπους τους διέταξε να φάνε. Μετά την ολοκλήρωση
της δημιουργίας του ο Θεός ανέθεσε τα πάντα κάτω από ανθρώπινη επίβλεψη και είπε «Θα είναι δικά σας για τροφή»
(Γεν 1:23). Προφανώς, όμως, το φαγητό δεν έδωσε μόνο ζωή αλλά προκάλεσε και θάνατο επειδή υπήρχε κάτι το οποίο
είχαμε προειδοποιηθεί ούτε να το δοκιμάσουμε.
Στην ιστοία της Γένεσης καθώς και στην αφήγηση των πειρασμών του Χριστού στην έρημο, βρίσκουμε σαφείς διαφορές
ανάμεσα στο «Φαγητό που δίνει Ζωή» και στο φσγητό που συντηρεί την ζωή προσωρινά. Στον Κήπο της Εδέμ το
κακό αποσπάει την ανθρωπότητα από την κοινωνία που είναι πηγή Ζωής και στην έρημο Ο Κύριος μας νικάει τον κακό
επειδή αρνείται να μετατρέψει τις πέτρες σε ψωμί. Εδώ ο Χριστός εξισώνει το υλική τροφή, που υποστηρίζει την ζωή
μας, με τον Λόγο του Θεού, χωρίς τον οποίο θα είχαμε λιμοκτονήσει πνευματικά.
Στο Ευαγγέλιο, σύμφωνα με τον Άγιο Ιωάννη, ο Ιησούς μιλάει και πάλι για την τροφή. Αυτή την φορά το κάνει ξεκάθαρο
οτι το «Ουράνιο Ψωμί» είναι πολύ ανώτερο ακόμη και από το μάννα που έφαγαν οι Ισραηλίτες στην έρημο: «Οι
πρόγονοί σας έφαγαν το μάννα στην ερημιά, και πάλι πέθαναν. Αλλά εδώ είναι το ψωμί που προέρχεται
από τον παράδεισο το οποίο μπορεί να φάει οποιοσδήποτε και να μην πεθάνει». (Ιωάννης 6:49-50)
Όπως μπορούμε να δούμε ξεκάθαρα ο ορισμός του Κυρίου μας για το τί σημαίνει ζωντανός και πεθαμένος δεν συμπίπτει
με τον δικό μας. Οι Γαλιλαίοι, για παράδειγμα, ήταν πάρα πολύ ζωντανοί στα μάτια των συγχρώνων, αλλά ο Χριστός είπε
ότι κάθονταν στο σκοτάδι και στη σκιά του θανάτου. Από την άλλη πλευρά, δηλώνει ότι ο Θεός είναι ο Θεός για τους
ζωντανούς επειδή ο Θεός είναι ο Θεός του Αβραάμ, του Ισαάκ και του Ιακώβ, οι οποίοι ήταν νεκροί στα μάτια του
ανύποπτου κοινού του Κυρίου, αλλά ήταν πάρα πολύ ζωντανοί και σε κοινωνία μαζί Του.
Για να γίνει κατανοητή όλη η εικόνα σχετικά με την αυθεντική ζωή και την αφύσικη πραγματικότητα του θανάτου, πρώτα
πρέπει να κατανοήσουμε την διαφορά μεταξύ της τροφής που μας δίνει ο Χριστός σαν τον Λόγο του Θεού καθώς και το
Σώμα και Αίμα Του και το φαγητό που αναζητούμε κάθε μέρα. Μόνο αφού αναγνωρίσουμε τη σημασία των δύο βασικών
αναγκών γαι την ολοκλήρωση της ύπαρξής μας, θα μπορέσουμε να καταλάβουμε την σημασία των εντολών Του στους
μαθητές του: «Ακολουθήστε με και αφήστε τους πεθαμένους να κειδέυσουν τους πεθαμένους τους».
(Ματθαίος 8:22) Ο Άγιος Λουκάς προσθέτει επίσης «αλλά πηγαίνετε και προκυρήξτε την Βσιλεία του Θεού»
(Λουκάς 9:60) Με αυτήν την εντολή κλήθηκαν να κατανοήσουν ότι ο λόγος για κάθε κακό και το θάνατο είναι τελικά η
άγνοια και η πνευματική λιμοκτονία και ότι είναι δική τους δουλειά να παραδώσουν τα καλά νέα για το Ουράνιο Συμπόσιο
στα χαμένα πρόβατα του. Στη Βασιλεία του Θεού διανέμεται το Ουράνιο Ψωμί σε όσους λιμοκτονούν
πνευματικά.
Δυστυχώς, κάποιοι βρίσκουν τον δρόμο και κάποιοι
παραπλανούνται. Κάποιοι χάνουν το δρόμο τους στο σκοτάδι
και κάποιοι δεν τον ψάχνουν, πολλοί καλούνται αλλά μόνο
λίγοι επιλέγουν να απαντήσουν στο κάλεσμα του Χριστού για
να είναι οι εκλεκτοί. Επομένως, η επιδημία του λαϊκισμού
διαπερνά την ανθρώπινη κοινωνία σήμερα. Εκείνοι που έχουν
στερηθεί από το ζωντανό ψωμί κάθονται στη σκιά του
θανάτου.

Είναι θλιβερό να ακούμε καθημερινά τα νέα για δεκάδες τραγικούς θανάτους
από υπερβολική κατανάλωση ναρκωτικών, μέσω ενεργών πυροβολισμών σε
δημόσια σχολεία ή μαζικών τρομοκρατικών επιθέσεων στους δρόμους των
μεγάλων πόλεων. Σε οποιαδήποτε μορφή κι αν είναι, ο θάνατος επιβάλλεται στη
δημιουργία του Θεού, καλείται να γεμίσει το χώρο που ανήκει στη Ζωή. Η
κληρονομιά του Κάιν συνεχίζει να παραμορφώνει την εικόνα του Θεού και
διαδίδει το θάνατο μεταξύ των αθώων παιδιών του Θεού από εκείνους που
έχουν χάσει την κοινωνία με την πηγή της Ζωής.
Τι μπορούμε να κάνουμε για να σταματήσουμε την επιδρομή του κακού; Πώς μπορεί να αντικατασταθεί η επιθυμία για
θάνατο με την επιθυμία για Ζωή στις ανθρώπινες καρδιές; Ίσως αυτή ήταν η ερώτηση που έκαναν οι μαθητές Του
ενώ παρακολουθούσαν το πάθος Του και τη σταύρωσή του βλέποντας τη ζωή να καταπείνεται από το θάνατο. Για
σχεδόν 2000 χρόνια η Ιερά Καθολική και Αποστολική Ορθόδοξη Εκκλησία ταξιδεύει το ταξίδι των πρώτων ανθρώπων
από την Κυριακή της Συγχώρεσης έως την Κυριακή της Ανάστασης κάθε χρόνο κατά τη διάρκεια της Μεγάλης
Σαρακοστής και μας υπενθυμίζει ότι ο Κύριος είπε: «Ήρθα για να έχουν ζωή και να την έχουν άφθονα ».
(Ιωάννης 10:10)
Η Μητέρα Εκκλησία μας καλεί καθημερινά να βιώσουμε:
ότι ο τάφος είναι άδειος και η ζωή είναι θριαμβευτική
ότι το Ουράνιο Φως έχει ξεπεράσει το σκοτάδι του τάφου,
ότι δεν μπορούμε να προτιμήσουμε το σκοτάδι όπως οι Γαλιλαίοι
ότι όλοι έχουμε ένα ταξίδι και σαν τον άσωτο γιο πρέπει επίσης να σηκωθούμε και να περπατήσουμε
ότι όπως ο Ζακχαίος πρέπει να αναζητούμε το φως επιμελώς
και ότι όταν βρούμε το φως θα έρθει και θα κατοικήσει στα σπίτια μας
και ότι όταν μπαίνει στα σπίτια μας θα φωτίσει τη ζωή μας
και ότι όλοι έχουμε μια αποστολή σε αυτήν τη ζωή
και ότι δεν μπορούμε να αγνοήσουμε το κάλεσμα να Τον υπηρετήσουμε κρύβοντας τη λάμπα που καίει
κάτω από ένα μπούσελ
Και ότι πρέπει να λάμψουμε αυτό το Φως στον κόσμο, ώστε όλοι όσοι το βλέπουν να μην
είναι πια στο σκοτάδι και στη σκιά του θανάτου, αλλά θα δοξάσουν τον Θεό που είναι στον Ουρανό.

Dear Βrothers and Sisters in Christ,
FASTING, CONFESSION & COMMUNION
I am so glad that you are in a place spiritually where you desire to challenge yourself to draw closer to our Lord
during this Holy Week. In our culture, the true meaning of fasting is slowly fading away. We abstain from meat and call
it fasting, where that is just the beginning of fasting. The true orthodox process of fasting is a multi-legged stool. The
goal of fasting is to get closer to God (Communion). Because God is infinitely far and infinitely close to us, our getting
closer to God does not have to do anything with distance, but it has to do with direction. When we turn our face (heart)
away from God we are infinitely far, when we turn our face (heart) towards Him and we keep the eyes of our heart on
God then there is only a finite space between us and God.
So what do we do to draw closer to God?
We make a U-turn by turning away from worldly things, and instead of traveling away from God, we start traveling
towards Him. We need to remember that we do not turn away from the world because it is evil, but because we
humans can give full attention to only one thing at a time, and in this case, it is either God or the world.
We usually start our journey of U-turn by abstaining from food because our life is consumed by the process of eating.
Eating we do more than anything else. Eating is the second hardest passion humans wrestle with next to
fame and glory. So lessening attention towards food could be the easiest because it is ever-present in our lives
and the hardest because it is the inseparable part of our life. We can not do without it yet we need to limit our
relationship with it.
Fasting is not limited to abstaining from meat and dairy but it is about lessening the amounts of food we consume
daily. The reason we lessen the consumption of food is that most of the time, less food is better for us both
physically and spiritually. How much food is good enough? Saint John Chrysostom says if we eat and we are
desiring to rest and take a nap we have eaten too much. If we desire to spend time praying after we have eaten
it means we have not eaten too much. When we are fasting we are supposed to eat less than enough
(considering health and other unique life circumstances).
So then the next leg of fasting during Great Lent and Holy Week is spending less time with other things that consume
our attention and instead spend greater amounts of time in prayer. When we turn away from the world
we need to fill the emptiness created by the absence of the world with something else. The best thing to fill the
void in our life with is God. The best way to invite God into our life is by prayer. In this case, prayer is an uninterrupted
remembrance of God. Like a mother can not take her mind away from a newborn baby, we are supposed
to keep our mind with God at all times. This does not happen at once but it is a gradual process and
Great Lent and Holy Week is a good time to practice doing this. The best prayer for exercise is the Jesus Prayer.
"Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, Have mercy on me a sinner". Sinner in this prayer does not mean that
we have done something bad but it means that our mind and our life gravitates away from God. In this prayer,
we ask the Lord to bring us to Himself with the help of His abundant mercy. The ultimate form of prayer that
Christ teaches us to use is to ask for His Kingdom.
After abstaining and redirecting our attention from other things towards God, the next thing we need to do is to
give alms. Remember when I said fasting is not only about staying away from meat but cutting the amounts of food and
the number of times we eat? So one of the reasons for that is that we can share what we did not eat or spend with
those who did not have any. Without almsgiving, our fasting is meaningless because when we give alms we give to the
Lord Himself. He is present in this world through everyone who is in need. Giving to the poor and needy is another form
of communion with Him. As fasting is done in many ways so is giving. We give not only food and material goods
that we have saved by abstaining and spending less but we also give the extra attention that we have cut off from other
things. Certainly giving can go beyond what we have saved (by abstaining from
food) if we are blessed with much, however, we need to remember that the best
gift is the one that we are able to give by sacrificing much. In this modern world,
the most needed and hardest thing to give is our undivided attention and it can
start with our family members and friends.
Now getting back to the second part of the question. What should we do when preparing
to receive communion?
Like physical food is sustenance for us so that we can work and live our life so

is communion for our spiritual life of fasting, praying, and almsgiving. Without
communion, it is very hard to have a spiritual life that is why we have
more opportunities to receive communion during lent by having Presanctified
Liturgies.
In order to receive communion, our tradition requires us to have a
holy life and in order to be able to live a holy life, we need to receive
communion more frequently. This sounds like a chicken and an egg
problem but it is not, if we remember another tradition that is fading away:
The sacrament of confession.
Although it is not practiced as widely anymore, the prerequisite of communion is confession. Confession is the hardest of
all sacraments for me at least. This is a time when a person stands in front of Christ in the presence of Confessor and
asks for God’s Mercy for the things that become roadblocks in our journey towards Him, or tortures our conscience, or
creates a feeling of guilt in our heart.
For continued communion with God, we need prayer, fasting, and almsgiving. While we pray, fast, and give alms, we
need to constantly check our hearts for things that can separate us from God and clear the way by confession. This is
our Spiritual life in a nutshell.
Now, because the ultimate goal of our life is Communion with our Lord, please do not allow any of the things that I
mentioned above to keep you away from Him. All I have mentioned above is achieved over a period of time during
which we need communion with the Lord, so that we can get stronger in our spiritual life. All of what I mentioned is not
done one after another in any particular order but all of them at once. When it seems too much we do not cut one or
another thing out but we do it all in small portions and take baby steps based on our ability and place in our journey.

Είμαι τόσο χαρούμενos που βρίσκεστε σε ένα μέρος πνευματικά όπου θέλετε να προκαλέσετε τον εαυτό σας να
πλησιάσετε τον Κύριό μας κατά τη διάρκεια αυτής της Μεγάλης Εβδομάδας. Στον πολιτισμό μας, το πραγματικό νόημα
της νηστείας εξαφανίζεται αργά. Απέχουμε από το κρέας και το ονομάζουμε νηστεία όπου αυτό είναι μόνο η αρχή της
νηστείας. Η πραγματική ορθόδοξη διαδικασία της νηστείας είναι ένα σκαμνί με πολλά πόδια. Ο στόχος της νηστείας είναι
να πλησιάσετε τον Θεό (Κοινωνία). Επειδή ο Θεός είναι απείρως μακριά και απείρως κοντά μας, το να πλησιάζουμε τον
Θεό δεν έχει να κάνει τίποτα με απόσταση αλλά έχει σχέση με την κατεύθυνση. Όταν γυρίζουμε το πρόσωπό μας
(καρδιά) μακριά από τον Θεό, είμαστε απείρως μακριά, όταν γυρίζουμε το πρόσωπο μας (καρδιά) προς αυτόν και
κρατάμε τα μάτια της καρδιάς μας στον Θεό τότε υπάρχει μόνο ένας πεπερασμένος χώρος μεταξύ μας και του Θεού.
Τι κάνουμε λοιπόν για να πλησιάσουμε τον Θεό;
Κάνουμε μια στροφή στρίβοντας μακριά από τα κοσμικά πράγματα, και αντί να ταξιδεύουμε μακριά από τον Θεό,
αρχίζουμε να ταξιδεύουμε προς αυτόν. Πρέπει να θυμόμαστε ότι δεν απομακρυνόμαστε από τον κόσμο επειδή
είναι κακός, αλλά επειδή εμείς οι άνθρωποι μπορούμε να δώσουμε πλήρη προσοχή σε ένα μόνο πράγμα κάθε
φορά, και σε αυτήν την περίπτωση, είναι είτε ο Θεός είτε ο κόσμος.
Συνήθως ξεκινάμε το ταξίδι μας με στροφή 180 μοιρών, αποφεύγοντας το φαγητό γιατί η ζωή μας καταναλώνεται
από τη διαδικασία του φαγητού. Τρώμε πιο πολύ από ότι κάνουμε οτιδήποτε άλλο. Το φαγητό είναι το δεύτερο
σκληρότερο πάθος που παλεύουν οι άνθρωποι δίπλα στη φήμη και τη δόξα. Έτσι, η μείωση της προσοχής στην
τροφή θα μπορούσε να είναι η ευκολότερη επειδή είναι πάντα παρούσα στη ζωή μας και η δυσκολότερη επειδή
είναι το αδιαχώριστο μέρος της ζωής μας. Δεν μπορούμε να το κάνουμε χωρίς αυτό, αλλά πρέπει να
περιορίσουμε τη σχέση μας με αυτό.
Η νηστεία δεν περιορίζεται στην αποχή από κρέας και γαλακτοκομικά προϊόντα, αλλά αφορά τη μείωση των
ποσοτήτων τροφίμων που καταναλώνουμε καθημερινά. Ο λόγος που μειώνουμε την κατανάλωση τροφής είναι
ότι τις περισσότερες φορές, λιγότερο φαγητό είναι καλύτερο για εμάς τόσο σωματικά όσο και πνευματικά. Πόσο
φαγητό είναι αρκετά καλό;
Ο Άγιος Ιωάννης Χρυσόστομος λέει ότι αν φάμε και θέλουμε να ξεκουραστούμε και να πάρουμε έναν υπνάκο τότε
έχουμε φάει πάρα πολύ. Αν θέλουμε να ξοδεύουμε χρόνο προσευχόμενος αφού έχουμε φάει αυτό σημαίνει

ότι δεν έχουμε φάει πάρα πολύ. Όταν
νηστεύουμε πρέπει να τρώμε λιγότερο από το
αρκετό (λαμβάνοντας υπόψη την υγεία και άλλες
μοναδικές συνθήκες ζωής).
Έτσι λοιπόν, το επόμενο σκέλος της νηστείας κατά τη
Μεγάλη Σαρακοστή και την Μεγάλη εβδομάδα
είναι να ξοδεύουμε λιγότερο χρόνο με άλλα
πράγματα που καταναλώνουν την προσοχή μας
και αντί να ξοδεύουμε μεγαλύτερο χρόνο στην
προσευχή. Όταν απομακρυνόμαστε από τον
κόσμο, πρέπει να γεμίσουμε το κενό που δημιουργείται από την απουσία του κόσμου με κάτι άλλο. Το
καλύτερο πράγμα για να γεμίσουμε το κενό στη ζωή μας είναι ο Θεός. Ο καλύτερος τρόπος να
προσκαλέσουμε τον Θεό στη ζωή μας είναι με προσευχή. Σε αυτήν την περίπτωση, η προσευχή είναι μια
αδιάκοπη ανάμνηση του Θεού. Όπως μια μητέρα δεν μπορεί να απομακρύνει το μυαλό της από ένα
νεογέννητο μωρό, έτσι πρέπει να διατηρούμε το μυαλό μας στον Θεό ανά πάσα στιγμή. Αυτό δεν συμβαίνει
αυτόματα, αλλά είναι μια σταδιακή διαδικασία και η Μεγάλη Σαρακοστή και η Μεγάλη Εβδομάδα είναι μια
καλή στιγμή για να το κάνουμε αυτό. Η καλύτερη προσευχή για άσκηση είναι η προσευχή του Ιησού. "Κύριε
Ιησούς Χριστέ, Υιέ του Θεού, ελέησε με τον αμαρτωλό". Ο αμαρτωλός σε αυτήν την προσευχή δεν
σημαίνει ότι κάναμε κάτι κακό, αλλά σημαίνει ότι ο νους και η ζωή μας απομακρύνουν από τον Θεό. Σε αυτήν
την προσευχή, ζητάμε από τον Κύριο να μας φέρει κοντά του με τη βοήθεια του άφθονου ελέους Του. Η
απόλυτη μορφή προσευχής που ο Χριστός μας διδάσκει να χρησιμοποιήσουμε είναι να ζητάμε για τη Βασιλεία
Του.
Αφού απέχουμε από άλλα πράγματα και ανακατευθύνουμε την προσοχή μας προς τον Θεό, το επόμενο πράγμα
που πρέπει να κάνουμε είναι να δώσουμε ελεημοσύνη. Θυμηθείτε όταν είπα ότι η νηστεία δεν αφορά μόνο το
να μένουμε μακριά από το κρέας αλλά να μειώσουμε τις ποσότητες φαγητού και τον αριθμό των φορών που
τρώμε; Έτσι, ένας από τους λόγους για αυτό είναι ότι μπορούμε να μοιραστούμε αυτό που δεν φάγαμε ή
ξοδέψαμε με εκείνους που δεν είχαν. Χωρίς ελεημοσύνη, η νηστεία μας δεν έχει νόημα γιατί όταν δίνουμε
ελεημοσύνη δίνουμε στον ίδιο τον Κύριο. Είναι παρών σε αυτόν τον κόσμο μέσω όλων όσων έχουν ανάγκη.
Το να δοθεί στους φτωχούς και στους άπορους είναι μια άλλη μορφή κοινωνίας μαζί Του. Δεδομένου ότι η
νηστεία γίνεται με πολλούς τρόπους, έτσι είναι και το δόσιμο. Δίνουμε όχι μόνο τρόφιμα και υλικά αγαθά που
έχουμε σώσει από την αποχή και ξοδεύοντας λιγότερα, αλλά δίνουμε επίσης την επιπλέον προσοχή που
έχουμε αποκοπεί από άλλα πράγματα. Σίγουρα το δόσιμο μπορεί να ξεπεράσει αυτό που έχουμε σώσει (από
την αποχή από το φαγητό) εάν είμαστε ευλογημένοι με πολλά, ωστόσο, πρέπει να θυμόμαστε ότι το
καλύτερο δώρο είναι αυτό που μπορούμε να δώσουμε θυσιάζοντας πολύ. Σε αυτόν τον σύγχρονο κόσμο, το
πιο αναγκαίο και πιο δύσκολο πράγμα να δώσουμε είναι η αδιαίρετη προσοχή μας και μπορεί να ξεκινήσει με
τα μέλη της οικογένειας και τους φίλους μας.
Τώρα επιστρέφοντας στο δεύτερο μέρος της ερώτησης. Τι πρέπει να κάνουμε όταν προετοιμάζουμε να
λάβουμε κοινωνία.
Όπως η φυσική τροφή είναι τροφή για εμάς, έτσι ώστε να μπορούμε να εργαστούμε και να ζήσουμε τη ζωή
μας, έτσι και είναι και η κοινωνία για την πνευματική μας ζωή της νηστείας, της προσευχής και της ελεημοσύνης.
Χωρίς κοινωνία, είναι πολύ δύσκολο να έχουμε μια πνευματική ζωή και γι 'αυτό έχουμε περισσότερες ευκαιρίες να
λάβουμε κοινωνία κατά τη διάρκεια της νηστείας, έχοντας προ-αγιασμένες Λειτουργίες.
Για να λάβουμε κοινωνία, η παράδοση μας απαιτεί να έχουμε μια ιερή ζωή και για να είμαστε σε θέση να
ζήσουμε μια ιερή ζωή, πρέπει να λαμβάνουμε κοινωνία πιο συχνά. Αυτό ακούγεται σαν ένα κοτόπουλο και ένα αυγό,
αλλά δεν συμβαίνει αν θυμόμαστε μια άλλη παράδοση που ξεθωριάζει:
Το μυστήριο της εξομολόγησης.
Αν και δεν ασκείται πλέον ευρέως, η προϋπόθεση της κοινωνίας είναι η εξομολόγηση. Η εξομολόγηση είναι το
πιο δύσκολο από όλα τα μυστήρια για μένα τουλάχιστον. Αυτή είναι μια στιγμή που ένα άτομο στέκεται μπροστά
στον Χριστό παρουσία του Ομολογητή και ζητά το Έλεος του Θεού για τα πράγματα που γίνονται οδοφράγματα στο
ταξίδι μας προς αυτόν, ή βασανίζει τη συνείδησή μας ή δημιουργεί ένα αίσθημα ενοχής στην καρδιά μας.

Για συνεχή επικοινωνία με τον Θεό, χρειαζόμαστε προσευχή,
νηστεία και ελεημοσύνη. Ενώ προσευχόμαστε, γρήγορα, και κάνουμε
ελεημοσύνη, πρέπει να ελέγξουμε συνεχώς τις καρδιές μας για πράγματα
που μπορούν να μας χωρίσουν από τον Θεό και να καθαρίσουν τον δρόμο
με εξομολόγηση. Με λίγα λόγια, αυτή είναι η πνευματική μας ζωή.
Τώρα, επειδή ο απώτερος στόχος της ζωής μας είναι η Κοινωνία με
τον Κύριό μας, παρακαλώ μην αφήσετε κανένα από τα πράγματα που
ανέφερα παραπάνω να σας κρατήσει μακριά από Αυτόν. Όλα όσα ανέφερα παραπάνω επιτυγχάνονται για μια χρονική
περίοδο κατά την οποία χρειαζόμαστε κοινωνία με τον Κύριο, έτσι ώστε να μπορούμε να γίνουμε πιο δυνατοί στην
πνευματική μας ζωή. Όλα όσα ανέφερα δεν γίνονται το ένα μετά το άλλο με κάποια συγκεκριμένη σειρά, αλλά όλα
ταυτόχρονα. Όταν φαίνεται πάρα πολύ δεν κόβουμε το ένα ή το άλλο πράγμα, αλλά τα κάνουμε όλα σε μικρές
μερίδες και παίρνουμε μικρά βήματα με βάση την ικανότητά μας και τη θέση μας στο ταξίδι μας. Παρακαλώ
ενημερώστε με αν μπορώ να σας εξηγήσω καλύτερα τα πράγματα που δεν εξήγησα αρκετά.

PRESIDENTS REPORT ...
Dear Parishioners,
Christ is Risen! Last year we traveled the road of Lent as individuals and did not have the chance to gather as a
community. We were physically isolated from one another. We have been precluded from gathering freely in our
church and embracing in person in our faith. We have worshipped in our homes via live-stream. We have gotten together
in prayer and for meetings, only virtually. When we have gathered, we are required to “socially distance.” But
what has this experience done to our faith, my faith, your faith; is it stronger after what we have experienced?
It appears we are on the verge of turning the corner and I have allowed myself to think we are returning to a
level of normalcy. I can’t wait until our church is back to functioning 100% normal and COVID-19 is a distant memory,
but we seriously need to think what this has done to us at least at the spiritual level.
In this past year, the world has discovered new ways as to how to connect and communicate. The virtual way!
Zoom and YouTube is now part of everyone’s household and life. In a way, it can be good and in many ways it can be
very bad, especially in our spiritual lives. The virtual way, is great, if one Sunday, we are not feeling well or the weather
is bad or for whatever other good reason, we cannot participate in the liturgy physically. It’s a convenience, but we
should not replace Sunday Church Services with YouTube permanently. We need to be part of the whole experience,
such as smelling the incense, venerating Icons being together as a community in the presence of God in the house of
worship.
God asked Adam in the garden of Eden where he was because he wanted relationship with His creation. It is a
question that is important to us all because we need to know where we are in a relationship with God being secluded
and away from church for so long. Let us remember also Zacchaeus and like him accept Christ’s invitation and come
down from our tree. We can make small and permanent changes to come closer to Christ.
Easter and spring are about resurrection and rebirth. This is the perfect time to take steps and return back to
our church, to our community. The Parish Council recently spoke about resuming scaled down coffee hours after Easter.
This is also another small first step to building back up with fellowship. Please reach out to your family and friends and
invite them back.
As our Lenten season came to an end and Holy Week began, our church doors were open to all the faithful. It
was so pleasing to once again see old and new faces praying together during one of the most-holiest weeks of the year.
It was so nice to see so many children participating on Good Friday and through-out Holy Week, whether it was helping
decorate our Epitaphio or simply just helping the adults with whatever needed to be done to get ready for Christ’s burial
and resurrection. Reach out to our PTO, and inquire as to how to further involve your children. They have done a tremendous
job in creating events for our children, where they can make long lasting relationships. It was also so nice to
see a lot of children serving in the altar please continue to bring them. Let us teach our children the traditions of our
Orthodox faith so that they will continue to serve one way or another throughout their lives. They are the future, if we
don’t start now, tomorrow might be too late.
Hopefully 2021, will be the last year that our annual fundraisers will take place at a scaled down level. Seeing
what great success, we had last year with the pre-order gyro day, the Parish Council has decided this year to do another
one. Therefore, gear-up because this year it will be the weekend of May 22nd and 23rd. As always, we need everyone’s
help, especially our GOYA and their friends, who were a tremendous help last year. Please reach out and we will
put you to work. At this time, it looks like our annual festival will not be taking place due to the city’s restrictions, but
most likely we will be having a much scaled down version. Details to follow.
Once again, this year we couldn’t gather together for our annual Palm Sunday Fish Dinner, but we successfully
sold Fish Dinners to-go. Thank you to all who helped in any capacity to make it
a success, especially to Stelios Sfikas, who cooked the meal. Thank you to
Nick and Helen Boulas for donating all the items that were purchased from the
fish all way to the containers that were used to serve the dinners. They have
been donating the Palm Sunday Dinner now for a few years. Another “thank
you” needs to go out to Vangelis and Marlene Kechris for donating an additional
$5 per each meal sold, bringing the dinner selling price from $15 per person
to $20. Thank you all!

A quick update on the capital improvement project that we are about to undertake. For those of you that were
not at our Special General Assembly that took place this past March 7 th , we are in the process of getting building permits
from the city. Covid-19 has delayed the process tremendously with the City of Somerville, and keep in mind that the
City is still shut down and they are still working with limited staff. We still have not heard back from them as far as waiving
the approx. $143K building permit fee.
Bill Galatis and I have spoken to four banks regarding securing the one-million-dollar loan, which was approved
by the General Assembly and have received term sheets from 4 banks. The finance ministry will make a recommendation
to the Parish Council as far as, which one is the best and the Parish Council will have the final approval. Our attorneys
(Anderson and Krieger) have reviewed the construction contract and shortly, I will finally sign it and put the wheels
into motion.
The moment we get the building permit and a loan is secured the construction will begin. As you all heard from our construction
contractor at the March 7 th Special General Assembly, God willing it should be in a very short few weeks. It has
been a very long and mind-numbing process, but we are dotting our “i” and crossing our “t”, every step of the way. I
cannot wait to see the fruits of our tedious labor finally come to fruition and completed once and for all.
Some of you may have heard that we have hired an additional employee to work in the office. Her name is
Athena Pandelidou and she will be Father Anthony’s right-hand pastoral assistant. There are not enough hours in the
day for Father Anthony to do all that he needs to do. He needs to focus 100% on his pastoral ministry. Ms. Athena has
taken over all the administrative things that Father did, such as the website, google calendars, email services through
constant contact, You-Tube publishing and live streaming services and Facebook communications and many other of his
administrative tasks. Since she is fluent in Greek, she will also be a big help in translating to Greek all the text that goes
out of the office and with her extensive bookkeeping skills she will be taking over a lot of the things that Cookie does in
the office. In the few short weeks that Athina has been with us we have seen a huge potential where our community
can go administratively.
As the renovation project gets underway, and the fundraising ramps up, she will also be keeping track of all the
donations, etc., that are associated with the project. Now that we have fully transitioned to stewardship, she will be
taking over everything that is associated with that function. I truly believe that she will be a big asset to this community
and will bring us to the next level of professionalism.
In closing, I want to thank the Parish Council for all their continued support and the ministries for all their hard
work. Thank you to all the Parishioners who continue to support the church with their generosity. Last but not least,
Fr. Anthony for all the hard work and effort that he continues to put into his ministry in our Dormition Church. I, along
with Father Anthony and the Parish Council are striving towards what is best for our church. Please let us know how
we are doing and let us know in what areas you would like us to improve in. As always we continuously need your support.

Αγαπητοί Ενορίτες,
Χριστός Ανέστη! Πέρυσι, ταξιδέψαμε στο δρόμο της Σαρακοστής ως μεμονωμένα άτομα και δεν είχαμε την
ευκαιρία να συγκεντρωθούμε μαζί ως κοινότητα. Απομονωθήκαμε φυσικά ο ένας από τον άλλο. Μας είχε απαγορευτεί να
συγκεντρωθούμε ελεύθερα στην εκκλησία μας και να αγκαλιάσουμε προσωπικά την πίστη μας. Λατρεύαμε στα σπίτια μας
μέσω ζωντανής τηλεοπτικής αναμετάδοσης. Συγκεντρωθήκαμε για την προσευχή και τις συναντήσεις, μόνο διαδικτυακά.
Όταν είχαμε συγκεντρωθεί, ήμασταν υποχρεωμένοι να «απομακρυνθούμε κοινωνικά ». Αλλά τι έχει κάνει αυτή η
εμπειρία στην πίστη μας, στην πίστη μου, στην πίστη σας; Είναι ισχυρότερη μετά από αυτό που έχουμε βιώσει;
Φαίνεται ότι είμαστε στα πρόθυρα να στρίψουμε τη γωνία και επέτρεψα τον εαυτό μου να σκεφτεί ότι
επιστρέφουμε σε επίπεδο κανονικότητας. Δεν μπορώ να περιμένω έως ότου η εκκλησία μας επιστρέψει στη λειτουργία

της 100% κανονικά και το COVID-19 είναι μια μακρινή μνήμη, αλλά πρέπει σοβαρά να
σκεφτούμε τι μας έχει κάνει τουλάχιστον σε πνευματικό επίπεδο.
Τον τελευταίο χρόνο, ο κόσμος ανακάλυψε νέους τρόπους σύνδεσης και επικοινωνίας.
Τον εικονικό τρόπο! Το ζουμ και το YouTube είναι πλέον μέρος της οικογένειας και της ζωής
όλων. Κατά κάποιο τρόπο, μπορεί να είναι καλό και με πολλούς τρόπους μπορεί να είναι πολύ
κακό, ειδικά στην πνευματική μας ζωή. Ο εικονικός τρόπος, είναι υπέροχος, αν μια Κυριακή, δεν
αισθανόμαστε καλά ή ο καιρός είναι κακός ή για οποιονδήποτε άλλο καλό λόγο, δεν μπορούμε
να συμμετέχουμε στη λειτουργία. Είναι μια ευκολία, αλλά δεν πρέπει να αντικαταστήσουμε
μόνιμα τις Λειτουργίες της Εκκλησίας της Κυριακής με το YouTube. Πρέπει να είμαστε μέρος
ολόκληρης της εμπειρίας, όπως μυρίζοντας το θυμίαμα, προσκυνώντας τις εικόνες. να είμαστε
μαζί ως κοινότητα στην παρουσία του Θεού στο σπίτι της λατρείας.
Ο Θεός ρώτησε τον Αδάμ στον κήπο της Εδέμ που ήταν, επειδή ήθελε να έχει σχέση με τη δημιουργία Του.
Είναι ένα ερώτημα που είναι σημαντικό για όλους μας γιατί πρέπει να ξέρουμε πού είμαστε σε σχέση με τον Θεό
επειδή είμαστε απομονωμένοι και μακριά από την εκκλησία για τόσο καιρό. Ας θυμηθούμε επίσης τον Ζακχαίο και σαν
αυτόν να δεχθούμε την πρόσκληση του Χριστού και να κατεβούμε από το δέντρο μας. Μπορούμε να κάνουμε μικρές
και μόνιμες αλλαγές για να πλησιάσουμε τον Χριστό.
Το Πάσχα και η άνοιξη αφορούν την ανάσταση και την αναγέννηση. Αυτή είναι η ιδανική στιγμή για να
κάνουμε βήματα για να επιστρέψουμε στην εκκλησία μας, στην κοινότητά μας. Το Ενοριακό Συμβούλιο μίλησε
πρόσφατα για συνέχιση μιας μειωμένης ώρας του καφέ μετά το Πάσχα. Αυτό είναι επίσης ένα άλλο μικρό πρώτο βήμα
για την οικοδόμηση της συντροφικότητας. Επικοινωνήστε με την οικογένεια και τους φίλους σας και προσκαλέστε
τους πίσω.
Καθώς η περίοδος της Σαρακοστής μας έληξε και άρχισε η Μεγάλη Εβδομάδα, οι πόρτες της εκκλησίας μας
ήταν ανοιχτές σε όλους τους πιστούς. Ήταν τόσο ευχάριστο να βλέπουμε για άλλη μια φορά παλιά και νέα πρόσωπα
να προσεύχονται μαζί κατά τη διάρκεια μιας από τις πιο ιερές εβδομάδες του έτους. Ήταν πολύ ωραίο να βλέπουμε
τόσα πολλά παιδιά να συμμετέχουν τη Μεγάλη Παρασκευή και όλη τη Μεγάλη Εβδομάδα, είτε βοηθούσαν στη
διακόσμηση του Επιταφίου μας είτε απλά βοηθώντας τους ενήλικες με ό, τι χρειάζεται για να ετοιμαστούν για την
ταφή και την ανάσταση του Χριστού. Επικοινωνήστε με το PTO μας και ρωτήστε για την περαιτέρω συμμετοχή των
παιδιών σας. Έχουν κάνει τεράστια δουλειά στη δημιουργία εκδηλώσεων για τα παιδιά μας, όπου μπορούν να
δημιουργίσουν μακροχρόνιες σχέσεις. Ήταν επίσης πολύ ωραίο να βλέπουμε πολλά παιδιά να υπηρετούν στο Ιερό,
παρακαλούμε συνεχίστε να τα φέρνετε. Ας διδάξουμε στα παιδιά μας τις παραδόσεις της Ορθόδοξης πίστης μας, ώστε
να συνεχίσουν να υπηρετούν με τον ένα ή τον άλλο τρόπο καθ 'όλη τη διάρκεια της ζωής τους. Τα παιδιά είναι το
μέλλον, αν δεν ξεκινήσουμε τώρα, αύριο μπορεί να είναι πολύ αργά.
Ας ελπίσουμε ότι το 2021, θα είναι η τελευταία χρονιά που θα πραγματοποιούνται οι ετήσιοι έρανοι σε
μειωμένο επίπεδο. Βλέποντας πόσο μεγάλη επιτυχία, είχαμε πέρυσι με την προ-παραγγελία γύρου, το Συμβούλιο της
Ενορίας αποφάσισε φέτος να κάνει άλλο ένα. Ως εκ τούτου, προετοιμαστείτε γιατί φέτος θα είναι το Σαββατοκύριακο
στις 22 και 23 Μαΐου. Όπως πάντα, χρειαζόμαστε τη βοήθεια όλων, ειδικά το GOYA και των φίλων τους, οι οποίοι
ήταν μια τεράστια βοήθεια πέρυσι. Επικοινωνήστε μαζί μας και θα σας βάλουμε στη δουλειά. Προς το παρόν, φαίνεται
ότι το ετήσιο φεστιβάλ μας δεν θα πραγματοποιηθεί λόγω των περιορισμών της πόλης, αλλά πιθανότατα θα έχουμε
μια πολύ περιορισμένη έκδοση. Λεπτομέρειες θα ακολουθήσουν.
Για άλλη μια φορά φέτος δεν μπορέσαμε να συγκεντρωθούμε για το ετήσιο δείπνο Ψαριού την Κυριακή των
Βαϊων, αλλά πουλήσαμε με επιτυχία τα γέυματα ψαριού. Ευχαριστούμε όλους όσους βοήθησαν με οπιοδήποτε τρόπο
για να το επιτύχουμε, ειδικά στον Στέλιο Σφίκα, ο οποίος μαγείρευσε το γεύμα. Ευχαριστούμε τον Nίκο και την Ελένη
Μπoύλας για τη δωρεά όλων των αντικειμένων, που αγοράστηκαν, από το ψάρι μέχρι τα δοχεία που
χρησιμοποιήθηκαν για το σερβίρισμα των γευμάτων. Χαρίζουν τα έξοδα του δείπνου Ψαριού της Κυριακής των ΒαΪων
εδώ και μερικά χρόνια. Ένα άλλο «ευχαριστώ» πρέπει να πάει στον Βαγγέλη και την Μαρλέν Κεχρή για τη δωρεά 5
επιπλέον δολλαρίων ανά κάθε γεύμα που πωλήθηκε, αυξάνοντας την τιμή πώλησης του δείπνου από $ 15 ανά άτομο
σε 20 δολλάρια. Σας ευχαριστούμε όλους!
Μια γρήγορη ενημέρωση για το έργο βελτίωσης κεφαλαίου που πρόκειται να αναλάβουμε. Για όσους από εσάς
δεν παρευρεθήκατε στην Ειδική Γενική Συνέλευση που πραγματοποιήθηκε στης 7η Μαρτίου, βρισκόμαστε στη
διαδικασία λήψης αδειών οικοδομής από την πόλη. Ο Covid-19 καθυστέρησε πολύ τη διαδικασία με την Πόλη του

Somerville και λάβετε υπόψη ότι η πόλη είναι ακόμα κλειστή και εξακολουθούν να εργάζονται με
περιορισμένο προσωπικό. Ακόμα δεν έχουμε ακούσει από αυτούς σχετικά με την παραίτηση πληρωμής του τέλους
των $143K για άδεια οικοδομής.
Ο Βασίλης Γαλάτης και εγώ μιλήσαμε σε τέσσερις τράπεζες σχετικά με τη διασφάλιση του δανείου ενός
εκατομμυρίου δολαρίων, το οποίο εγκρίθηκε από τη Γενική Συνέλευση και έχουμε λάβει φύλλα όρων από 4 τράπεζες.
Η Διακονία Οικονομικών θα υποβάλει σύσταση στο Συμβούλιο της Ενορίας, ποιο είναι το καλύτερο και το κοινοτικό
συμβούλιο θα έχει την τελική έγκριση. Οι δικηγόροι μας (Anderson και Krieger) εξέτασαν το συμβόλαιο κατασκευής
και σύντομα, θα το υπογράψω και θα θέσω τους τροχούς σε κίνηση.
Μόλις λάβουμε την άδεια οικοδόμησης και εξασφαλιστεί ένα δάνειο, η κατασκευή θα ξεκινήσει. Όπως
ακούσατε όλοι από τον εργολάβο κατασκευών μας στην Ειδική Γενική Συνέλευση στης 7ης Μαρτίου, με το θέλημα
του Θεού, θα είναι σε πολύ λίγες εβδομάδες. Ήταν μια πολύ μακρά και μουδιαστική στο νου διαδικασία, αλλά την
τελειοποιούμε σε κάθε βήμα. Ανυπομονούμε να δούμε τους καρπούς της κουραστικής εργασίας μας τελικά να
καρποφορηθούν και να ολοκληρωθούν μια για πάντα.
Κάποιοι από εσάς ίσως έχετε ακούσει ότι έχουμε προσλάβει μία επιπλέον υπάλληλο για να εργαστεί στο
γραφείο. Το όνομά της είναι Αθηνά Παντελίδου και θα είναι το δεξί χέρι του πατέρα Αντωνίου. Δεν υπάρχουν αρκετές
ώρες την ημέρα για να κάνει ο πατέρας Αντώνιος όλα όσα πρέπει να κάνει. Πρέπει να επικεντρωθεί 100% στην
ποιμαντική του Διακονία. Η κα Αθηνά έχει αναλάβει όλα τα διοικητικά πράγματα που έκανε ο Πατέρας, όπως την
ιστοσελίδα, τα ημερολόγια google, τις υπηρεσίες email μέσω constant contact, τις εκδόσεις You-Tube και τις
υπηρεσίες ζωντανής ροής και τις επικοινωνίες Face Book και πολλά άλλα από τα διοικητικά του καθήκοντα.
Δεδομένου ότι είναι άπταιστη στα ελληνικά, θα βοηθήσει επίσης στη μετάφραση στα ελληνικά όλων των κειμένων
που βγαίνουν έξω από το γραφείο και με τις εκτεταμένες δεξιότητες τήρησης βιβλίων της θα αναλάβει πολλά από τα
πράγματα που κάνει η Cookie στο γραφείο. Τις λίγες εβδομάδες που η Αθηνά είναι μαζί μας, έχουμε δει τεράστιες
δυνατότητες όπου η κοινότητά μας μπορεί να πάει διοικητικά.
Καθώς το έργο ανακαίνισης ξεκινά, και η συγκέντρωση χρημάτων αυξάνεται, θα καταγράφει επίσης όλες τις
δωρεές κ.λπ. που σχετίζονται με το έργο. Τώρα που έχουμε μεταβεί πλήρως στην οικονομική επιστασία, θα αναλάβει
όλα όσα σχετίζονται με αυτήν τη λειτουργία. Πιστεύω πραγματικά ότι θα είναι ένα μεγάλο πλεονέκτημα για αυτήν την
κοινότητα και θα μας φέρει στο επόμενο επίπεδο επαγγελματισμού.
Κλείνοντας, θέλω να ευχαριστήσω το Ενοριακό Συμβούλιο για όλη τη συνεχή υποστήριξή τους και τα
Διακονίες για όλη τη σκληρή δουλειά τους. Ευχαριστώ όλους τους ενορίτες που συνεχίζουν να υποστηρίζουν την
εκκλησία με τη γενναιοδωρία τους. Τέλος, αλλά όχι λιγότερο σημαντικό, τον π. Αντώνιο για όλη τη σκληρή δουλειά
και προσπάθεια που συνεχίζει να ασκεί τη διακονία του στην Εκκλησία μας. Εγώ, μαζί με τον πατέρα Aντώνιο και το
ενοριακό συμβούλιο προσπαθούμε να κάνουμε το καλύτερο για την εκκλησία μας. Πείτε μας πώς πάμε και
ενημερώστε μας σε ποιους τομείς θέλετε να βελτιωθούμε. Όπως πάντα
χρειαζόμαστε συνεχώς τη βοήθεια σας. Σκεφτείτε να αφιερώσετε το χρόνο, το
ταλέντο και τον θησαυρό σας!

Dear Parishioners:
Our Philoptochos began the year with our Vasilopita Day on Sunday, January 10. Thank you
to the parishioners in attendance for their generous donations, which we forwarded to the National
Philoptochos Society for their Vasilopita - Saint Basil Academy Commitment.
In a combined effort with the Dormition Family Table we purchased one hundred $20 Market Basket
gift cards totaling $2000 for the Somerville needy families at the Clarendon Hill Towers. The gift cards
were presented to Mrs. Katjana Ballantyne, Councilor Ward 7, Somerville, after the liturgy on February 28 for the
COVID-19 - # Neighbors Helping Neighbors Program.
Our Easter 2021 Bake Sale was a wonderful success. We greatly appreciate the enormous help and generosity
of all the women and men who helped to prepare our baked goods, decorate and assemble the Easter baskets,
and who purchased the tsourekia, chocolate tsourekia, koulourakia, and Easter baskets. We sold out of everything
this year. Thank you very much.
On Saturday, May 15, 2021, at noon, we had our Annual General Assembly/Kokkino Avgo at our Church. This
year is an election year for our next St. Catherine's Philoptochos Society Board for the 2021 - 2023 term. All Orthodox
women, 18 years old and older, are welcomed to become members of our Philoptochos.
The current 2019 - 2021 Board members and I would like to thank the St. Catherine's Philoptochos members,
the parishioners, and everyone in the community who have helped and supported us in so many ways. We would like
to, especially, thank Father Anthony for his spiritual guidance, his assistance, and his blessings. It has been our
pleasure to serve our Philoptochos, our Church, and our extended
community these past 2 years.

H Φιλόπτωχος μας ξεκίνησε τη χρονιά
με την Ημέρα Βασιλόπιτας την Κυριακή 10
Ιανουαρίου. Ευχαριστούμε τους ενορίτες που
παρευρέθηκαν, για τις γενναιόδωρες δωρεές
τους, τις οποίες προωθήσαμε στην Εθνική
Φιλόπτωχο για τη δέσμευση τους για την Βασιλόπιτα - Ακαδημία Αγίου Βασιλείου.
Σε μια συνδυασμένη προσπάθεια με το οικογενειακό τραπέζι αγοράσαμε εκατό, $20 αξίας κάρτες δώρων του
Market Basket, συνολικού ύψους $2000 για τις οικογένειες που χρειάζονται βοήθεια στο Clarendon Hill Towers. Οι
κάρτες δώρων παρουσιάστηκαν στην κα Katjana Ballantyne, Σύμβουλος του Ward 7, Somerville, μετά τη λειτουργία
στις 28 Φεβρουαρίου για το πρόγραμμα COVID-19 - # Γείτονες Βοηθώντας τους Γείτονες.
Η Πασχαλινή μας πώληση ζαχαροπλαστικής του 2021 ήταν μια υπέροχη επιτυχία. Εκτιμούμε πολύ την
τεράστια βοήθεια και τη γενναιοδωρία όλων των γυναικών και ανδρών που βοήθησαν στην προετοιμασία των
ψημένων προϊόντων μας, τη διακόσμηση και τη συναρμολόγηση των Πασχαλινών καλαθιών και που αγόρασαν τα
τσουρέκια, τσουρέκια με σοκολάτα, κουλουράκια και τα πασχαλινά καλάθια. Πουλήσαμε τα πάντα φέτος. Ευχαριστώ
πολύ.
Το Σάββατο 15 Μαΐου 2021, το μεσημέρι, είχαμε την Ετήσια Γενική Συνέλευση / Κόκκινο Αυγό στην Εκκλησία
μας. Φέτος είναι έτος εκλογής για το επόμενο συμβούλιο της Αγίας Αικατερίνης για το χρονικό διάστημα 2021-2023.
Όλες οι Ορθόδοξες γυναίκες, 18 ετών και άνω, είναι ευπρόσδεκτες να γίνουν μέλη. Τα τρέχοντα μέλη του
Διοικητικού Συμβουλίου 2019-2021 και θα ήθελα να ευχαριστήσουν τα μέλη της Φιλοπτώχου της Αγίας Αικατερίνης,
τους ενορίτες και όλους όσους στην κοινότητα που μας βοήθησαν και υποστήριξαν με πολλούς τρόπους. Θα θέλαμε,

ιδιαίτερα, να ευχαριστήσουμε τον πατέρα Αντόνιο για την πνευματική του καθοδήγηση,

Coffee hours do not have to be only in memory of deceased loved ones. Two or more
families could also join together and sponsor a coffee hour.
You might want to consider hosting a coffee hour in honor of a family member’s birthday, name day, wedding, anniversary,
graduation, promotion, retirement, and beginning of fall, end of the winter, an early spring … or “just because!”
If you want the Parish Council to prepare the coffee hour for you, please contact the Church Office for the different
rates that are applicable depending upon what you would like served.

PTO REPORT
We thank you for allowing our children to come together for a wonderful Saturday of Lazarus
kids event. Once again, the sun
was shining bright! The kids had a wonderful time decorating their mosaic
crosses
creating their steppingstones, baking their Lazarakia and learning about Lazarus through story-time
on the lawn with Father Anthony. Thank you to all the parents, children and Goyans that helped make it a
perfect day.
On your next visit to church, be sure you take a stroll toward the upper lawn, just by the classroom windows
to view the beautiful Steppingstone made by the super cute and creative children of our Dormition church.
Finally, thank you for supporting the PTO through your donations and participating in our various Fundraisers. Your
support enables us to continue to offer programs and enrichment to the children of our community. Seeing their
smiles and hearing their laughter brings our church to life.

Σας ευχαριστούμε που επιτρέψατε στα παιδιά μας να έρθουν μαζί για ένα υπέροχο
Σάββατο γιά την παιδική εκδήλωση του Λάζαρου. Για άλλη μια φορά, ο

έλαμπε! Τα παιδιά διασκέδασαν υπέροχα διακοσμώντας τους μωσαϊκούς
σταυρούς τους δημιουργώντας τα λίθινα μονοπάτια τους, ψήνοντας
τα Λαζαράκια τους και μαθαίνοντας για τον Λάζαρο μέσω της ιστορίας στό γρασίδι με
τον πατέρα Αντώνιο. Ευχαριστώ όλους τους γονείς, τα παιδιά και τους Goyan’s που
βοήθησαν να γίνει μια τέλεια ημέρα.
Στην επόμενη επίσκεψή σας στην εκκλησία, φροντίστε να κάνετε μια βόλτα προς το πάνω ακριβώς δίπλα απο
τα παράθυρα της τάξης για να δείτε τα όμορφα μονοπάτια που έφτιαξαν τα σούπερ χαριτωμένα και δημιουργικά
παιδιά της εκκλησίας της Κοίμησης της Θεοτόκου.
Τέλος, σας ευχαριστούμε πού υποστηρίξατε το PTO μέσω των δωρεών σας και τη συμμετοχή σας στους διάφορους
εράνους μας. Η υποστήριξή σας μας δίνει τη δυνατότητα να συνεχίσουμε να προσφέρουμε προγράμματα και εμπλου-

Dear Parishiners,
I would like to say a big thank you to our teachers, Markela Hatzakis, Anna Mercina Stefanou and Kate
Makrigiannis who was with us this fall and also thanks to Presvytera for her help each week. We were
blessed to be able to have in person classes as well as Zoom for the students who joined from their
homes. We continued to enjoy Story-Time with Father each Sunday morning and kids and their parents
were able to join via Zoom. You can view taped Story-Times on the church’s web page.
We have three graduating seniors this year, Anna Mercina Stefanou who is graduating from Medford High
School and will be attending Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences in Boston, Peter Dres who is
graduating from Boston College High School and will be attending Syracuse University in the fall, and our altar boy
Pashalis Galbadis who is graduating from Swampscott High School and will be attending Suffolk University. Congratulations
to you all!!
If you would like to join the Sunday School ministry as a teacher or an aide we are always looking for more
hands. Μore hands make for lighter work. I’m always amazed by how much I learn each week when preparing my
lessons. You will get back so much more by helping our youth
learn about our faith. Please consider becoming a part of our
ministry.

Αγαπητοί Ενορίτες,
Θα ήθελα να πω ένα μεγάλο ευχαριστώ στους
δασκάλους μας, την Μαρκέλα Χατζάκη, την Άννα
Μερσίνα Στεφάνου και την Κεϊτ Μακρυγιάννη που
ήταν μαζί μας αυτό το φθινόπωρο αλλά και ευχαριστώ στην
Πρεβυτέρα για τη βοήθειά της κάθε εβδομάδα. Ήμασταν
ευλογημένοι πού μπορούσαμε να έχουμε προσωπικά μαθήματα,
καθώς και διαδικτυακά μαθήματα Zoom για τους μαθητές που
εντάχθηκαν από τα σπίτια τους. Συνεχίσαμε να απολαμβάνουμε την ώρα της ιστορίας με τον πάτερ Αντώνιο κάθε
Κυριακή πρωί και τα παιδιά και οι γονείς τους ήταν σε θέση να συμμετάσχουν μέσω του Zoom. Μπορείτε να δείτε
μαγνητοσκοπημένες ιστορίες στην ιστοσελίδα της εκκλησίας.
Έχουμε τρείς τελειόφοιτους φέτος, την Άννα Μερσίνα Στεφάνου που θά αποφοιτήσει από το Medford High
School και θα παρακολουθήσει μαθήματα στο Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences στη Βοστώνη
τον Παναγιώτη Ντρές που θά αποφοιτήσει από το Boston College High School και θα παρακολουθήσει μαθήματα στό
Syracuse University το φθινόπωρο καί το παπαδοπαίδι μας Πασχάλης Γαλβάδης που θα αποφοιτήσει από το Swampscott
High School και θα παρακολουθήσει μαθήματα στο Suffolk University. Συγχαρητήρια σε όλους σας!!
Αν θέλετε να γίνετε μέλος στη διακονία του Κατηχητικού Σχολείου ως δάσκαλος ή βοηθός, αναζητούμε πάντα
περισσότερα χέρια. Περισσότερα χέρια κάνουν ελαφρύτερη εργασία.

Πάντα μέ εκπλήσσει τα πόσα μαθαίνω κάθε εβδομάδα όταν προετοιμάζω τά μαθήματά μου. Θα πάρετε πίσω πολύ

GOYA REPORT
Dear parishioners,
Christ is Risen! We hope everybody had a blessed and wonderful
Pascha! Over Great Lent, our GOYA has been working hard thinking of ideas
for fundraisers and events that they could do. Members of our ministry
have also been helping the youth of our church! We have come to PTO
events to help the children with fun activities and crafts.
GOYAns on Holy Thursday and Good Friday helped the young girls
of our parish dress up as myrrh bearers. All throughout Great Lent, our
GOYA MOVIE NIGHT GOYAns have also been helping out the younger children in the altar. A big
thank you to all of our GOYAns for all your hard work and for always being
there as leaders to the younger children of our parish! The GOYA will be doing more fundraisers and collections in
the near future as we wrap up our GOYA year, so be on the lookout for announcements from us soon in the weekly
bulletins!

GOYA MOVIE NIGHT
Η ΓΚΟΓΙΑ τήν Μεγάλη Πέμπτη και τήν Μεγάλη Παρασκευή
βοηθήσαν τα νεαρά κορίτσια της ενορίας μας να ντυθούν ως μυροφόρες.
Καθόλη τη διάρκεια της Μεγάλης Σαρακοστής, τα παιδιά της ΓΚΟΓΙΑ μας βοήθησαν τα μικρότερα παιδιά μέσα στο
Ιερό. Ένα μεγάλο ευχαριστώ σε όλη την ΓΚΟΓΙΑ για την σκληρή δουλειά σας και για το ότι είστε πάντα εκεί ως ηγέτες
στα μικρότερα παιδιά της ενορίας μας! Η GOYA θα κάνει περισσότερους έρανους και συλλογές στο εγγύς μέλλον

Louise Lambrukos has been a steward of the Dormition of the Virgin
Mary Church, since she married her husband Phillip Lambrukos. Louise
converted to the Greek Orthodox faith prior to getting married to her husband
of 42 years until he passed away in 2013. She has two children, a
daughter, Katherine, who is married to Jason Hanley and a son, Phillip.
She is the proud grandmother of three grandchildren – Julie, Ava and Joel.
She has been serving the parish, since the early 1970’s at various
capacities. She joined the Parish Council in the early 70’s for the first time
and became a council member serving under the leadership of President,
James Bremis. In 1976, she moved from Medford, Ma to Framingham
Ma, as her husband bought a restaurant in Framingham, which he ran for
15 years until his retirement. Since Framingham was too far to travel to
Somerville, they became stewards of the St. Demetrios Church in Weston,
Ma but, they always returned to Somerville for many church events.
She was a Human Resource Department Manager for Verizon until her retirement in 1995. Once she
retired, they moved back to Medford, Ma in 1995 and rejoined the Dormition Church, in Somerville. Louise
again became active and joined ministries where her children were involved, such as the PTO and GOYA.
When her children grew older she became a member of the St. Catherine’s Philoptochos Society and
held positions as a Secretary, Treasurer, and President for 6 years, prior to her husband’s lengthy illness. During
her tenure on the Philoptochos, along with the other members she ran many functions, including New
Year’s Eve parties, cooked and worked during the Festival weekends, but during those years they were best
remembered for the comical plays they put on after the Spaghetti Luncheons every February right before Lent,
written and directed by the late Toula Dres. She currently serves on the Philoptochos Board as Vice President.
In 2014, she returned to the Parish Council member and served until 2020, where she served as a secretary
for the last 4 years of her service. She worked on many functions to help support the church and
cooked and served many times for the Dormition Table, which serves the less fortunate in the City of Somerville
and beyond.
