Hauraki Gulf
& ISLANDS
Hauraki gulF.
The Hauraki Gulf is home to over a million
hectares of sheltered, sparkling blue waters
and is dotted with beautiful emerald islands.
Waiheke and Great Barrier are the largest
islands, while other islands range from tiny,
uninhabited rocks to wildlife sanctuaries and
volcanoes. All share the bond of the sea.
Island-hopping is a favourite pastime for
Auckland ‘boaties’ and ‘yachties’. Moor-up in
a sheltered bay, have a swim, catch a snapper
for lunch or picnic on a deserted beach - it’s
the lifestyle Aucklanders are envied for.
Charter a boat or hire a kayak and you can
experience it for yourself. Many island
adventures are just a ferry ride away: Kawau
with its historic Mansion House, Tiritiri
Matangi’s wildlife sanctuary and the dormant
volcano of Rangitoto, Auckland’s most iconic
natural landmark.
And keep your eyes open for little blue
penguins popping to the surface between feeds.
