Artistic director doug Wilson
Tapped To Lead Gay Chorus
all-male choral group selects prominent leader in
choral music as its new artistic director.
douglas Wilson, an award-winning and well-known musician,
specializing in choral music and music education, has been named
new artistic director of the palm springs Gay Men’s chorus.
His first objective will be to audition new and returning members with
the goal of creating a 100-voice auditioned male chorus—comprised
of gay- and gay-supportive men from the palm springs, california,
metropolitan area. the chorus will perform concerts in December and
april, and a cabaret event next august.
“i am honored to direct this dedicated group of singers, and work with
their support team, as we kick off our 15th season. in the past few
years, the chorus has developed into a “chorus like no other”. i look
forward to working with these fine musicians.
Wilson is a psGMc singer, vocal coach and section leader. He also
directs the children’s choir and Hand Bell choir at Hope Lutheran
church, palm Desert, california. Before moving to palm springs, he
was accompanist and associate director of vocal groups and church
choirs in Michigan and nevada. Doug is a retired administrator of
the clark county school District (Las Vegas, nevada). He was also
organist and choir director for the community Lutheran church in
Las Vegas. Wilson received his Bachelor of Music from Michigan
state University and his Master of Music, organ performance from
arizona state University. He resides full time in rancho Mirage with
his husband.
“We are thrilled that Doug has accepted the position,” said david
sanchez, psGMc board chairman. “there are few individuals in our
valley with his talent, skills set and track record. He will bring not only
his depth of experience, but also his passion and professionalism.”
founded in 1999 as caballeros, the original chorus of 24 men selforganized
after discussing the need for palm springs to have a gay
chorus for men’s voices. the group is part of the Gay and Lesbian
association of choruses (GaLa). GaLa leads the LGBt choral
movement and cultivates artistic development of 8,000 singers from
more than 170 choruses around the globe
the chorus has performed at the steven chase awards Banquet:
evening Under the stars; and at one night only. Guest performers
have included opera singer Janet Hopkins; dance company tango
nacional argentina; and Florence Henderson.

Cinema diverse: The Palm springs Gay and Lesbian Film Festival
opens Thursday, sept. 19th, and runs through sunday, sept. 22nd
september 1, 2013, Palm springs, CA – if you’ve ever found
yourself in a complex, and sometimes challenging relationship,
you’re going to love LeATHer and CArL(A) - the two feature films
playing at 4pm, and 4:30pm, respectively, on Friday, september
20th at the sixth Annual edition of Cinema diverse: The Palm
springs Gay and Lesbian Film Festival.
the first, patrick McGuinn’s latest feature film, LeatHer, takes
audiences not to a leather bar, as one might expect, but rather to new
York’s picturesque catskills, where we meet mountain man, Birch.
Birch lives with his mentor, Walter, an older man whose estranged
son, andrew, was Birch’s childhood friend. When Walter dies, andrew
returns to his childhood home with his boyfriend, Kyle, to settle his
father’s estate, but when they arrive, they discover that Birch has been
living there, and has no plans to leave. thus begins a series of conflicts
and confrontations (with the past, and the present), that will change all
their lives forever....
the second film, carL(a), also takes audiences to new York (the
city, this time), but in an entirely different direction, when it comes
to relationships. carla, a pre-op transexual, struggles mightily with
her parents, who cannot accept her transition, and her brother, who
is so bothered by it that he resorts to violence. only her grandfather
understands and supports her decision to transition, and provides
much-needed family support. then carla meets sam, a great great guy
who really likes her. trouble is, sam likes carla the way she is, so when
she finds herself with the cash she needs to complete her transition,
sam begins to rethink the relationship, and carla is faced with a tough
dilemma. if she transitions she loses sam. But if she doesn’t, she may
lose herself. carL(a) is filmmaker/director eli Hershko’s first feature
film, and stars joslyn Defreece, Laverne cox, Gregg Bello, and Mark
Margolis
New Kid on the El Paseo Block
While a 53-year-old may not be a “kid”, Max Lightbender looks at the
world with the awe of any 7 year old. max works in the digital world
at his eponymous studio, Lightbender Art studios, located at 73-255
Max Lightbender, born Mark William Blackford, is
self-taught. He admits to knowing “nothing about art”
but has a sense of how art can be if conventions
are tossed aside. His work can be oddly mystic and
serene, or jarringly disturbing.
With a faint tinge of his Memphis boyhood lingering
in his speech, Max grew up in the world of the Gray
flannel suit. His father, an ivy League graduate
worked as a metals broker for alcoa aluminum
company. His mother was the perfect spouse to
a midlevel executive. Max seemed on the same
suburban trajectory. He dreamed of being a
commercial airline pilot but a serious motorcycle
accident left Max with a retinal vascular inclusion in
his left eye and color blindness in both eyes. With
flying no longer an option, Max enrolled in a hotel
management program. While working for the ritz
carlton hotels, Max was stricken by illness.
Unable to continue his employ with ritz carlton, Max
embarked on a five year quest to find meaning to his
life. Learning he was attention Deficit Disorder (aDD)
seemed to pull it all together for Max. He began to
see that his urge to explore and create was a part of the
aDD diagnosis that was the driving artistic force within him.
Max began exploring the alchemy of photography and digital software to create pixilated
distortions of nature, fantasy and Hollywood. “ i purchased a printer. i downloaded digital
software and from the moment i started experimenting with photo-manipulation as art. i was
smitten,” says Max. “i had no idea what i was doing, yet it felt so good and gave me such a
high, sometimes i would work straight for days and nights almost non-stop, forgetting to eat
or sleep. i couldn’t slow down. it was compulsive. My hunger to create art—even though i
was hesitant to call it that—was insatiable. others first had to identify me as an artist before i
believed it myself.”
Max’s entrée may seem incongruous to the el paseo art scene but art, like Max, is meant to
shake the established.
american Documentary film festival to present
“The Trials of muhammad Ali”
special one-Time-only screening scheduled for
Thursday, september 12, 2013 at Camelot Theatres in Palm springs
www.showclix.com/event/3774831
on Thursday, september 12th, The American
documentary Film Festival plans to present a very
special film - The Trials of muhammad Ali. The screening,
which begins at 7:30pm, will take place at the Camelot
Theatres in Palm springs
“this is one of the first films to receive an amDocs film fund
award,” said amDocs festival Director, ted Grouya. “our film fund
industry panel of judges, consisting of three different generations
of filmmakers, saw the potential of the film, and the passion with
which director Bill siegel approached the project, and decided to
commit funds to the film. now, having screened it myself, i know we
made the right choice, and i believe the film will be in the running
for the oscars.”
the trials of Muhammad ali is in limited release at this time, so
this will be the only chance for coachella Valley audiences to see it
until it goes into general release. the film has been receiving rave
reviews, and was actually described by one reviewer as “the best
documentary ever made about the most famous draft-resister in
human history.”
Directed by academy award–nominated director Bill siegel, the
trials of Muhammad ali, successfully chronicles olympic Gold
Medalist and World Heavyweight champion boxer, cassius
clay’s conversion to islam, his decision to change his name to
Muhammad ali, and his subsequent refusal to serve in the Viet
nam war. it looks at ali’s life, not so much as a boxer, but rather as
a man on a spiritual quest that took him from being one of the most
sought after men on earth, to being a social pariah, a convicted
felon, and a political and religious target. then, in a series of events
that surprised not only the world, but at times, ali himself, he was
cleared of criminal charges by the Us supreme court, became the
first and only three-time lineal World Heavyweight champion, and,
eventually, the recipient of the presidential Medal of freedom.
the trials of Muhammad ali includes never-before-seen historical
footage of ali, his family, friends and fans, his enemies and
detractors, as well as interviews shot exclusively for the film, with
ali’s brother, rahaman; his second wife, Khalilah camacho-ali;
new York times writer, robert Lipsyte; and nation of islam leader,
Louis farrakhan. What emerges is a mostly hidden history of
Muhammad ali, an opportunity for people all over the world to
see how his journey toward a full spiritual embrace of islam and
through his humanitarian work around the world, challenges each
of us to overcome today’s struggles with power, race, faith and
identity.
the trials of Muhammad ali is an amazing look at a man who
is an integral part of america. a man who speaks his mind, and
challenges convention with conviction. that man is Muhammad ali.
much panic around aiDs. We panic when we find out we have HiV. We
panic because friends test positive. We panic when blood tests come
back. But panic causes depression that contributes to illness. We need
to try to replace panic with confidence.
Hope expects health.
it’s easier to choose confidence and avoid panic if we listen more to
positive , hopeful people and less to negative, fearful people. if our
doctors and friends are giving us panic-causing messages, we need to
ask them to change their attitude, or we need to find new doctors and
new friends.
our healers and the people who love and support us can support us can
help us fight panic and depression. together, we can choose confidence
and hope.
and here is something for you to ponder. there is no reason to panic. i
am held in the hands of God. i am confident and hopeful. i surround
myself with confident , hopeful people.
please go out and have the most faBULoUs day!
Diverse:
The Palm Springs Gay and
Lesbian Film Festival
opens Thursday, Sept. 19th, and
runs through Sunday, Sept. 22nd
on Friday, September 20, 2013, Cinema Diverse: The Palm Springs Gay
and Lesbian Film Festival, will screen two very different documentaries,
both of which involve the State of israel. The first, which screens at 1pm,
is documentary filmmaker, adult-film entrepreneur and political columnist
Michael Lucas’ new film, UNDrESSiNG iSrAEL (GAY MEN iN THE ProMiSED
LAND). This amazing documentary examines a side of israel that is too often
overlooked: its thriving gay community, and features interviews with a
diverse range of local men, including a gay member of israel’s parliament, a
trainer who served openly in the army, a young Arab-israeli journalist, and a
pair of dads raising their kids.
The second documentary, which screens at 1:30pm, is lesbian filmmaker
Leora Eisenstein’s CHiCKEN SoUP WiTH KNiVES (Merak of im Sakinim).
This powerful film chronicles her journey with her sister and a private
detective to Lvov, Ukraine, her family’s hometown before World War ii.
There, she embarks on a search for her roots and lost family property
taken during the Holocaust, as well as a sense of justice. Her journey
seems straight-forward, but in reality, it encompasses a variety of personal
reflections and troubling family confrontations.
Both of these “must-see” documentaries are sure to both inform, and
surprise audiences. Each is accompanied by a short feature, and CHiCKEN
SoUP WiTH KNiVES will include a special Q&A with writer/director Leora
Eisenstein.
bRENDA LYNN mARTIN
Brenda grew up in rural santa rosa california
with her mom and dad and two brothers. after
high school she was a home health nurse
for 22 years and dabbled in the real estate
market. in her spare time she would come
down to palm springs in a motor home where
she owned a lot in outdoor resorts. she
liked her visits so much and met many new
friends. she told them some day she would
live in palm springs full time. now she has
lived here for four years. Brenda decided on
a new vocation, which was not easy to do in a
new city.
“it’s been a long, hard journey and i feel for the first time i
can now step back and take a deep breath. My hard work
of giving numerous hours to charity work, rescuing dogs,
and helping friends before taking care of my needs has
made the difference. i believe it has helped to build my
reputation of loyalty and respect both in the community
and with friends and business associates”. Branda said.
“i have had many different jobs in the last four years to
pay expenses such as appearing in some tV and reality
shows such as ncis-La, Hollywood treasure, Bruce Lee
challenge, etc. prior to doing what i do now. i have worked
hard with local charites such as child Help, my personal
online dog rescue efforts and with pet rescuers Blutopia
rescue, save a pet charity, etc. i have written articles for
“LiVe Magazine (pet column) and the Desert star to help
educate the public on dog care, rescue and personal pet
safety and care.”
Working with these charities has led Brenda to her main
passion and source of income. she formed a business
named BBZ petcare. she dog sits/boards all breeds in a
cage free environment at her my home.
“You can contact me on facebook at BBZ petcare, or my
other profession event planning, www.blackdiamonddiva.
starsofhollywoodnetwork.com . i have created a
dog fashion line of collars, bowls, leashes etc can be
purchased at cosmopawlitan cafe on el paseo in palm
Desert.
Brenda works with LiVe Magazine as a photographer for
special events. she is also the publisist for cochella Valley
artist Lon Michels, and the Lon Michels Gallery run by his
partner todd olson (also an artist).
“Believe it or not at 54, i am still modeling, thanks to
nerium a new product with a business opportunity
(contact renae Madore at 760-799-8172) and organizing
groups of models for events. for example, Lon Michels
is showcasing his one of a kind gowns, wearable fine art,
like the one i’m wearing on this cover of LiVe Magazine.
also i model for odessa christiana Designs modeling
her hand painted silks. i want to thank my wonderful
photographer and friend, skip jensen for the great shots!
He is considered one of the best photographers in the
Desert.”
i am the event planner with David Gray for an event on
october 5th at copley’s benefiting the desert Bindness &
Handicapped Association, as well as events catered by
Booker t Hall. i am also working on the Grand opening
event of the Lon Michels Gallery on october 26th, 2013,
at 1610 n. palm canyon Drive in palm springs. the
public is welcome to come in and meet artists Lon and
todd who regularly work live at the gallery. please check
out their gallery and invest in the famous Lon Michels.
indterestingly, as “noted by Academia”, Lon is one of
few painting maestro’s in the valley.
family is very important to Brenda. Her brothers, Mike and
tony, and niece, erica, and nephew Max are her focus on
life.
“i am especially thankful to my parents, Michael and judy
Martin, for all the help and support they have provided
to make it easier to fulfill my dreams.” said Brenda. “one
more special person i would like to mention, is Mr.Gary
Valbuena. Without him i wouldnt be where i am at right
now. He is also a buyer of Lon Michels’ and todd olson’s
art, which has now tripled in value!”
Charlie hunnam
Dakota Johnson
to star in
‘Fifty shades of Grey’
www.imdb.com/name/nm0402271/?ref_=fn_al_nm_1
It may have been one
of the most eagerly anticipated
casting choices
of the year, and we now
know the leads in the
film adaptation of “Fifty
Shades of Grey.”
The novel’s author, E.L. James,
tweeted on monday that actor Charlie
Hunnam will portray Christian
Grey, and actress Dakota Johnson
has been cast as Anastasia Steele.
The highly successful erotic novel
was released in 2011, and fans
have been speculating about who
might portray the two main characters
since plans for a film were
announced last year. A psychology
lecturer at the University of Central
Lancashire even put a face to the
character of billionaire Grey, who has
had readers all aflame.
Now, the fantasy will come to life in
the form of Hunnam, who is one of
the stars of the film “Pacific Rim” and
the television series “Sons of Anarchy.”
Johnson is the daughter of actors
Melanie Griffith and Don Johnson
and has appeared in the films “The
Five-Year Engagement” and “21
Jump Street.”
ailey Chase as Deputy branch Connally in Longmire
As Oklahoma City police detective butch Ada in the popular TNT
crime drama Saving Grace, bailey Chase helped solve brutal
homicide cases as part of the city’s major Crimes unit. Given the
actor’s good looks and talent, it is no surprise that he grabbed
the viewers’ attention with his performance. When that series
ended after three seasons, Chase booked a recurring role on another
hit show, FX’s Damages. While working on that series, the
opportunity came up for a more permanent gig playing Deputy
branch Connally in A&E’s Longmire.
“I had a really nice time being back in New York and working on
Damages with some wonderful actresses in Rose byrne and, of
course, the amazing Glenn Close,” says Chase. “Then the pilot
for Longmire came along, and originally I was up for the part of
Walt Longmire. I loved the character and was excited about the
prospect of having my own series, especially as its producers
[Greer Shephard and michael m. Robin] had a great track record
with [another TNT series] The Closer.
“So I read for them when I was back in Los Angeles during one
of my breaks from Damages and everything seemed to go really
well, but when they called my agent, they said that they wanted
me for the branch role. If you watched the pilot, you saw that
branch wasn’t quite the man he is today, or that I like to think he
is. So I had a side conversation with Greer Shephard, our show
runner, who basically told me, ‘You’re perfect for this role. We
want an equal adversary for Walt; that’s what will make this show
interesting. We’ll treat the pilot script a little bit with regard to
your role.’
“They then gave me a huge gift with the writing over the course
of season one. You see branch’s evolution all the way through
to the season finale where he has the fight with Walt. So that’s
how I became involved in Longmire, and I just feel so blessed.
Sometimes ego can get in the way and you’re like, no, I want my
own show, but then you’re offered a supporting character that
they [the producers/writers] really deliver on in the end. That’s
what happened for me with Longmire, and I’m having a blast,”
enthuses the actor.
From the master songwriter of our time, Stephen Sondheim, comes
a timely exploration of love, loneliness, marriage and relationships.
Using a treasure trove of songs originally written for Follies, A Little
Night Music, Company and other Sondheim favorites, the musical
tells the story of two lonely young people who dream and ponder
their lives in and out of love.
As our community embraces and celebrates marriage equality for
all, this is the perfect time for Diversionary to explore relationships
from different perspectives. Our production will present the show in
repertory with the story told from the alternating perspectives of two
men, two women, and a man and a woman.
This 90 minute energetic show starring Las Vegas’ longest
running headliner Frank Marino as comic icon Joan
Rivers features an all star cast of superstar female impersonators
who not only recreate but almost uncannily
duplicate the likenesses of stars ranging from Britney
Spears to Cher, Diana Ross to Beyonce, and even Madonna
and Dolly Parton have been known to stop by.
Recently added was Pop’s newest sensation’s Lady Gaga
and Rihanna as well as 6 of Sin City’s hottest male dancers
which help make this one of Las Vegas’ most spectacular
production shows. Meanwhile, Marino in his role as
the show’s emcee and star changes between every act
bringing an international whirlwind of couture to the stage
with each spectacular entrance.
