Cinema diverse: The Palm springs Gay and Lesbian Film Festival
opens Thursday, sept. 19th, and runs through sunday, sept. 22nd
september 1, 2013, Palm springs, CA – if you’ve ever found
yourself in a complex, and sometimes challenging relationship,
you’re going to love LeATHer and CArL(A) - the two feature films
playing at 4pm, and 4:30pm, respectively, on Friday, september
20th at the sixth Annual edition of Cinema diverse: The Palm
springs Gay and Lesbian Film Festival.
the first, patrick McGuinn’s latest feature film, LeatHer, takes
audiences not to a leather bar, as one might expect, but rather to new
York’s picturesque catskills, where we meet mountain man, Birch.
Birch lives with his mentor, Walter, an older man whose estranged
son, andrew, was Birch’s childhood friend. When Walter dies, andrew
returns to his childhood home with his boyfriend, Kyle, to settle his
father’s estate, but when they arrive, they discover that Birch has been
living there, and has no plans to leave. thus begins a series of conflicts
and confrontations (with the past, and the present), that will change all
their lives forever....
the second film, carL(a), also takes audiences to new York (the
city, this time), but in an entirely different direction, when it comes
to relationships. carla, a pre-op transexual, struggles mightily with
her parents, who cannot accept her transition, and her brother, who
is so bothered by it that he resorts to violence. only her grandfather
understands and supports her decision to transition, and provides
much-needed family support. then carla meets sam, a great great guy
who really likes her. trouble is, sam likes carla the way she is, so when
she finds herself with the cash she needs to complete her transition,
sam begins to rethink the relationship, and carla is faced with a tough
dilemma. if she transitions she loses sam. But if she doesn’t, she may
lose herself. carL(a) is filmmaker/director eli Hershko’s first feature
film, and stars joslyn Defreece, Laverne cox, Gregg Bello, and Mark
