NOVEMBER 2013
THANKSGIVING
Being grateful is said to be the key for an abundant
life. This month we celebrate a tradition dating back to
the early settlers of our country. It is a time when all
immigrants and natives alike can show appreciation for
the chance to live in a country founded on principles of
opportunity and freedom. Sure, it’s a great time to get
together with family and friends or to watch football while
getting ready for the holidays. This year, Chanukah begins
the night before Thanksgiving and it appears the holiday
season is well under way.
Speaking of holidays, our feature story this month
has some great gift giving ideas. Kavita Channe is our
extraordinary cover girl, showing off some fabulous
jewels and clothes for the naughty and nice. Kavita is also
a fan favorite on the sidelines as well. Check her out on
facebook or follow her on twitter.
Another holiday I encourage everyone to remember is
Veterans Day on the 19th. If there is one group deserving
of our gratitude, it is those who serve, served or paid the
ultimate price for our freedom. Too many times we take
for granted our ability to celebrate every occasion without
concern for our security. So, find some way to show your
appreciation and respect for the men and women who
served our nation.
A friend recently started a website to honor vets one last
time. Here is the site, should you be inclined to support
the cause. www.honorflightsouthfl.org.
Lastly, it will be fifty years since the John F. Kennedy
assassination on the 22nd. JFK was a President whose
ideals transcended time, regardless of party affiliation, and
his inspiration took us beyond our imagination as a nation.
It is my hope those in Washington will rekindle his spirit
and work together to keep our country great and drive us
to limitless opportunities.
Asteroid Ancestry
Fort Lauderdale astronomer cracks a 200-year-old puzzle
It may not be the most life-altering discovery, but Fort Lauderdale astronomer
Clifford Cunningham has uncovered the true creator of the word ‘asteroid.’
Cunningham’s research revealed that William Herschel,
the famed court astronomer for King George III,
did not coin the term as our science textbooks
claim. Rather it was the son of a poet friend
of Herschel’s—Greek scholar Charles Burney
Jr.—who invented the word.
Asteroid actually means “star-like” in
Greek. Cunningham, a world authority on
asteroids, uncovered two letters at Yale University
that indisputably proved that Burney Jr. came up with
the term. Cunningham’s findings will affect future science
textbooks and is already being reviewed by the editors of
Encyclopaedia Britannica. “We have a big revision of our
asteroid article in the works,” says Erik Gregersen, senior
editor for astronomy and space exploration at the
Encyclopedia. “To be accurate, the etymology of the
word might have to credit this other fellow.”
School for Thought
HCA and NSU announce a new kind of health center
In what he called “a transformational day in our university’s history,” Nova
Southeastern University president George Hanbury recently announced
the anchor tenant for the school’s new Academical Village: A “Jeffersonian
concept” of scholars and students living and working closely together to
combine theory and practice.
The anchor tenant for this educational Utopia will be a 100-bed HCA
teaching hospital, which
will operate in conjunction
with Nova’s medical school.
It will be the foundation for
NSU’s Academical Village,
which will ultimately
include more than 3 million
square feet of space. The
teaching hospital will tie in
“the research and academic
component into our scope
of care to patients,” says
Michael Joseph, President
and CEO of HCA East
Florida, which operates 14
South Florida hospitals.
A Hero’s
Home
Standard Pacific Homes
and Helping-a-Hero reward
an Army veteran
When Army Staff Sgt. Brian Mast
decided to settle in Broward County
after returning home, he did so because
of happy memories from childhood
vacations in Fort Lauderdale. He
also did not want to deal with the icy
surfaces up north, having lost both
legs in Afghanistan.
Coming to the rescue was national
non-profit Helping-A-Hero and
Standard Pacific Homes, which broke
ground last month on a $450,000
home in their Watercrest community
in Parkland. For a $50,000 mortgage,
Sgt. Mast will be given the home,
customized for his special needs.
Helping-a-Hero donated $100,000,
a ‘specially adapted’ federal housing
grant covered $67,000, and Standard
Pacific Homes donated the land. The
rest comes from in-kind donations by
Standard’s suppliers and vendors.
“When we started talking to the
vendors about this, they were all
excited to help,” says Dan Grosswald,
president of the South Florida division
of Standard Pacific. “I met [Sgt. Mast
and his wife] and they were very
thankful. But we should be thanking
them, not the other way around. This
has been very rewarding for everyone
participating.”
Helping a Hero (HelpingaHero.org)
has funded 90 homes in 21 states
for veterans so far, says National
Chairman Meredith Iler. Two more
homes in Florida will be awarded this
month at the organization’s national
gala in Houston Nov. 12.

Keeping
PACE
with the
Eco Times
County adopts a new
energy-saving program
Fewer
Puppies?
New permit puts breeders on a short leash
Broward is raining cats and dogs these days, spawning not only too many
abandoned pets, but numerous adoption agencies as well. To stem the tide, the
county commission has passed a new law requiring anyone who wants to breed to
purchase a permit from the county. Among other restrictions, breeding rights will
be denied to those known to have abused animals.
There is some debate over the new regulations in the local breeding community.
The law, meant to restrict irresponsible reproduction, may end up just penalizing
those who breed conscientiously. Those intended to be punished—operators of socalled
puppy mills—will probably skirt the new law. Nor does it necessarily protect
our four-legged chums from irresponsible pet owners who still abandon animals
when it suits them. Still, one paw at a time.
Shorter Voting Lines?
Broward to spend $8 million on voting gear
Anyone who had to endure the excruciating lines during the last presidential
election knows why Broward was ridiculed nationwide. In some cases, voters had
to wait four, five and even six hours to
cast their ballots. Not a good way to run
a democracy.
The good news is that county elections
supervisor Brenda Snipes recently
disclosed a plan to spend $8 million on
new voting equipment. The original
proposal called for $16.8 million, but the
county balked at the price, having already
spent millions on touch-screen voting
machines—only to have to return to paper
ballots amid controversy over the accuracy
of the machines.
This time, Snipes negotiated with the
county and cut her request in half, with
plans to use part of the money on 600 new
DS-200 ballot scanners, 2,000 new voting
booths and 38 ballot printers to be used in the early voting sites. Voters will see a
difference, says Snipes. Last year, many filed into packed polling places only to find
a single ballot scanner servicing the entire crowd.
The problem with installing
energy efficient devices is that they
take so long to pay for themselves.
A new national program has been
crafted to solve that problem for
homeowners.
Broward County has now
approved the so-called PACE
program (Property Assessed Clean
Energy). This allows property
owners to install energy efficient
improvements such as insulation,
solar panels and high-efficiency
air conditioners, and incorporate
the cost into their yearly property
taxes. The program relies on
private companies to provide the
financing—i.e. your mortgage
holder—while the county is
responsible for collecting and
repaying the money.
The only glitch is that it may
make it harder to sell your house,
since the new owners will have
to continue paying for your new
appliances with their ongoing
property taxes. Mortgage holders
aren’t thrilled, either. As an
alternative funding source, the
county will work with Energy Fund
Florida and EcoCity Partners.
Urban
Kayaking
Deep in the heart of urban Broward
County lies adventure on The Middle River
By Ivette Figueroa
The day wouldn’t be called pleasant by any
beach-goer: Overcast skies and a steady
breeze. But it was perfect for paddling around
Wilton Manors, where I arrived with a group
of friends to rent watercraft from the Atlantic Coast
Kayak Company.
Wilton Manors, located between Fort Lauderdale
and Oakland Park, is known as the “Island City” since
it is surrounded by a 7-mile loop of the Middle River.
Although the river can look more like a canal running
through a middle class neighborhood, there are mild
tidal currents and a winding course that let you know
it’s the real thing.
Atlantic Coast operates from a wooden dock at
Richardson Historic Park, where you can rent kayaks
for a 90-minute ‘loop’ journey. It seemed like just long
enough for a bunch of first-timers. Proprietor Kenny
Myers, an avid fisherman and outdoorsman, offers
tours of the natural life on the Middle River. We opted instead for a solo journey, with a
crash course on the basics of kayaking and a laminated
map of the route.
Almost immediately we took a wrong turn and had
to double back, laughing at our inability
to read a simple, non-iPhone map. As
my paddling became less choppy, we
started to look for the critters that
Kenny told us about.
Much of the trip borders on parkland
with towering mangroves that cage in
sections of the water with their tangled
roots. Fish teemed in the brackish waters,
breaking the surface every so often.
Ospreys and herons patrolled the grassy
banks and cormorants sunned their dark
feathers on branches of low-hanging trees. As we paddled on, we played a
game of who could spot the most iguanas. Dozens of these vibrantly colored
reptiles stalked the edges of the river.
About halfway through the 7-mile loop we stopped at Island City Park Preserve
for a picnic lunch—and to feed some ducks that followed us from the river. Keen
to reach a hidden lagoon Kenny told us about, we set off again with renewed vigor.
Our passageway to this enclave was narrow, crowded with knotted mangrove
roots and glistening spider webs. We had already ducked under bridges and
railroad tracks, but this was something else—a limbo under the metal pipes of a
bridge that sealed off the area. But we made it, true adventurers, rs, to our own slice of
secret Broward!
Atlantic Coast Kayak
Company, at Richardson
Historic Park and Nature
Preserve in Wilton
Manors (1937 Wilton
Drive). Rentals for kayaks
and paddleboards
start at $16 per person.
Open weekends 9 a.m.-
appointment.
Hugh Courtenay - One of
Florida’s Emerging Leaders
Hugh Courtenay, Founder & Chief Executive, Private Jet Charter, on the
allure of stone crabs, superior service and Alliance success.
Successful leaders take a decidedly passionate view of their lives and
world. Discover what drives the soaring success of Hugh Courtenay.
South Florida pleasures:
“The abundance of good eating houses! I especially like the stone crabs
when in season, the weather, the waterways and in particular the people
who are generally always friendly and helpful.”
Why aviation hooked me:
“Every day is different. We love the challenge that brings, in terms of
ensuring the professional attitude and unbeatable service that lets us win
deals from our competition!”
What keeps us on our toes:
“It’s all about being smarter than the competition: it’s become a real
cutthroat marketplace and that makes us even more determined to win.”
What fuels our leadership success:
“I think I am the same as most business owners: failure is not an option.
I want to succeed.”
The rewards of my Alliance membership:
“Apart from the weather, the food and the great looking people? From
a business perspective, there are great tax advantages. Quite a few
successful people reside in Florida, many of whom are Alliance members.
And many of whom are our clients.”
Fashion
in store style
It’s mix and match for the season at L&L on
Sunrise
By Denise Stirk
Photography By Matt Lagrotte
When it comes to fashion in South Florida, it’s a bit of a
jungle out there. Luckily, Michelle DiMarco and Kelli
Krystynak navigate the emerging trends, bringing the
best of the best into their unassuming Fort Lauderdale
shop: Lilac and Lilies.
Neither messes around when it comes to fashion. DiMarco is a FIT
grad and celebrity stylist, while Krystynak has her degree in Fashion
Merchandising from Kent State University. From Krystynak’s House
of Harlow chunky gold accessories to DiMarco’s dazzling Parker
shirt, it’s apparent why the pair’s keen eye for style has blossomed
L&L into a hot local boutique. Before the duo hopped a flight to
Vegas for market week (where the chicest stores go to find the
coolest threads), they gave a few tips for staying cool while living in
some of the hottest zip codes.
Are there any trends you’re obsessed with this season?
M I’m a big fan of wearing a tailored blazer, so I’m obsessing over
tuxedo inspired dressing.
K I am loving the trend of mixing and matching patterns together
in one outfit. It looks amazing. I’ve also been seeing a lot of skirts—
all different lengths and styles, so lady like.
On Krystynak (left): Dress by Parker | On DiMarco (right): Shirt by
Parker | Jeans by Flying Monkey | Accessories her own
Looking for designer
fashion at every price
point? Stop at Lilac and
Lilies, 2541 East Sunrise
Blvd., Ft. Lauderdale
Which fad will you never give in to?
M Crocs!!!!
I never say never.
K
What’s your favorite item at Lilac and Lilies right now?
M Love anything by Mara Hoffman. Her tribal prints are
amazing! She really knows how to construct a garment so that it’s
complimentary to the female shape.
Home Rise
Single-family home prices in South Florida
continue to improve, even though interests are on the
rise as well. And there’s more to come.
By Darcie Lunsford
Mortgage interest rates keep going up * ….
But so do median housing prices in South Florida… **
Single-family homes
Interest Rates
Median Housing Prices
300000
Home sales in South Florida—and across the state—are
becoming the economic version of the Man of Steel. Not
even interest rates moving faster than a speeding bullet
seem able to put a chink in their armor.
August marked the 20th consecutive month that the price of
a single-family home was higher than it was the same month the
previous year. The median price for a single-family home in South
Florida jumped 21 percent year-over-year to hit $254,000, according
to Florida Realtors data. Prices on condos and townhomes in August
told a similar story of resilience and rebound, rising 35 percent to
$139,000.
But August also marked the seventh consecutive month that
interest rates on the all-important 30-year fixed mortgage jogged up.
In fact, as of August, interest rates had soared more than a
percentage point since January, fueled largely by Ben Bernanke and
other Fed officials hemming and hawing that the Fed could—and
eventually will have to—stop its $85 billion a month bond-buying
program.
When the Fed does stop snapping up mortgage-backed and
Treasury securities, bond values will fall and interest rates will rise
some more. In today’s post-traumatic-recession environment just
the mere mention that the Fed may taper these asset purchases is
enough to send the Dow toppling and mortgage rates surging.
In South Florida, meanwhile, the housing market continues to
shine, far below the daunting macro-economic storm clouds.
“It is still a very good time to buy,” says Doug Leever, mortgage
sales manager of Miramar-based Tropical Financial Credit Union.
“People who have their finances in order are ready to buy.”
Demand for new mortgages at Tropical Financial has nearly
doubled since last year, Leever says. And he doesn’t see that stopping
even though he does expect, “rates to continue to trickle up.”
Sustained demand despite more expensive borrowing costs? It
makes sense when you put today’s market in context.
Rates and home values are still well below where they were at the
market peak in 2006. In 2006, for instance, the average mortgage rate
was 6.4 percent and the median price of single-family home in South
Florida was hovering around $400,000. Today, rates and home prices
remain about a third lower.
“I think some buyers are feeling like they missed the boat,” says
Joanne McKeage, an agent with Coldwell Banker in Fort Lauderdale.
“But home prices are still under-valued and prices are going to go
up. Interest rates are still historically low.”
Successful leaders take a decidedly passionate view of their lives and world.
South Florida pleasures:
“In three words: sports, golf, the beach. I’m a native of Las Olas Boulevard
and spend a great deal of time shopping and dining there.”
Why transit hooked me:
“I was raised using the transit system. In college, I found my way around
Tampa using transit and became an employee of the Hillsborough Area
Regional Transit Authority. I took the job because I understood its value as
a transit user.”
My climb up the career ladder:
“I came up the ranks through the industry association called Advancing
Women In Transportation (WTS), which is all about transforming the
transit system through the advancement of women. I graduated from
their leadership program and became a national board member. It
formed my future.”
My couldn’t-miss opportunity:
“I was hired by a 30-year-old Fort Lauderdale company called Limousines of
South Florida because of my experience in the business. They needed help
restructuring the company for possible acquisition. Keolis Transit, based in
France, chose us to make its first foray into the U.S. market in 2011 and the
rest is history.”
The rewards of my Alliance membership:
“I can honestly say that after speaking with the Alliance, I recognized it was
the organization that would be the key to our success in having an impact
on the transit system in Broward County. “
Keolis Transit America operates the bus service for Fort Lauderdale-
Community
Urban
farming
Neighbors meet nature in Ft. Lauderdale’s new
community garden
By Ivette Figueroa
TThe concept of urban agriculture has already sprouted in
cities like New York, Los Angeles and even Miami Beach,
where citizens can grow their own food in neighborhood
plots. In Broward County, however, the idea has not taken
root, perhaps because we haven’t had the kind of urban density that
robs residents of green space.
That has now changed, with the launching of a new urban garden
on a small plot of church land in the heart of Fort Lauderdale’s
Flagler Village. The brainchild of community organizer Chad Scott,
The Flagler Community Garden now has a home on Northeast 3rd
Avenue between 4th and 5th streets.
The idea for the garden began in 2009, when a coalition of
Flagler Village residents received permission from a local developer
to cultivate a vacant lot. In early 2011, however, the land was
foreclosed on and cleared.
“I was inspired by that and was thinking how I could restart
that garden,” says Chad, president of the nonprofit Flagler Garden
Project. “I was an auditor for seven years, but I wanted to do
something fun and new. So I went into real estate so that everything
I did could also benefit the community,” says the Broward native
who also lives in Flagler Village.
Long before the Garden Project, Chad was a champion of civic
duty, participating in neighborhood cleanups and city events.
He used local connections to find a new home for the garden. “I
connected with churches—one of which told me they had a vacant
house with a plot of land.” That was the First Evangelical Lutheran
Rows of potted plants line the entrance to Flagler Garden.
Chad Scott, President of the
Flagler Garden Project
Church of Fort Lauderdale and Pastor Paul Pfadenhauer.
Chad gathered volunteers and sponsors, and hosted
charity events such as The Night Owl Market in June—a
craft fair co-sponsored by the Flagler Garden and FAT
Village Artwalk. With additional funds donated by Whole
Foods and other local businesses, the project broke
ground in September.
When finished, the garden will incorporate 79 4x4-foot
raised garden plots, along with paths, compost bins, rain
barrels and hanging garden areas. A refurbished building
on the plot will offer events and workshops.
“Even though we have a very small plot (65,000sq ft.),
the space is maximized,” says Chad. “Some people don’t
have backyards and this is another way to get outdoors
and connect with your neighbors and nature.” Of the
79 plots, 10 will be earmarked for nearby schools and
colleges for gardening and environmental classes.
“We hope that our continued support of Flagler Garden
will provide the residents of Fort Lauderdale with a space
of their own to relax and know their neighbors, while
also educating the children of the city on the beauty of
seeing food grow and eating healthier,” says Whole Foods
spokesperson Marcea Cazel.
The Art
of Museum
Making
Twenty-seven years ago, Mindy Shrago decided
she wanted to create an art museum for the
children of Broward County, especially those who
lived in the west. It is now considered one of the
top few—if not the best—of its kind in the nation.
By JULIE KAY
It’s a Sunday morning at the Young at Art Children’s
Museum, and a string of parents bearing gifts starts
streaming in the door for the bevy of birthday parties
that will ensue all day.
Mindy Shrago, the creator, founder and CEO of the
museum, is there to greet them all with her ever-present
smile. With seemingly boundless energy she flies from room
to room, chatting up employees and student volunteers
while giving visitors a tour of the 55,000-square foot
museum she created from dust starting 27 years ago.
After a magazine photo shoot, Shrago meets a potential
well-heeled donor—the cousin of U.S. Sen. Debbie
Wasserman-Schultz—to give his family a personal
pottery lesson. Then she’s off to a lunch with the head
of the Association of Children’s Museums, who’s in town
for a tour of local institutions.
It may be hard for visitors to believe a self-described
young hippie artist and her mother dreamed up the
vision for a unique museum that draws visitors from
around the country—and then singlehandedly raised
the $26 million of funding, donor by donor. But Shrago
is nonchalant about that. She steers all conversations
back to the museum, and her life’s passion: Art.
“We never had a strategic plan,” shrugs Shrago,
60. “We just shot from the hip. We believe arts are
involved in every aspect of your life.”
Shrago was a successful Fort Lauderdale
pottery artist when she and her mother, Esther
Shrago, hatched the idea for a children’s museum
dedicated to the arts. The Miami native had
won best of show at the prestigious Las Olas
Art Festival and was an acclaimed artist in the
1970s and 1980s. But she wanted to do more.
She, along with her mother, wanted to instill her
passion for art in children, and to spread the gospel of the
healing nature of art to disadvantaged youths.
In the mid 1980s, mother and daughter traveled the
country visiting childrens’ museums, only to discover
there were none that focused solely on art. So in 1987 the
two incorporated Young
at Art and two years later
opened their first museum
in a 3,500-square-foot
storefront donated by The
Fountains shopping center
in Plantation.
For Shrago, a Hollywood
resident, it was important
to locate her museum in
suburban west Broward,
home to tens of thousands
of families but short on
culture. Married to then
Broward Circuit Judge Jay
Spechler, Shrago had some
powerful friends in Broward
County, which helped. She
had served as her husband’s
campaign manager when he
ran for state representative
in 1974, and found she had
a gift for fundraising.
“We had political ties,”
she acknowledges. “We
were able to get a lot of
in-kind donations. I love
fundraising... talking about
my passion.”
Says Spechler: “I’ve
always been involved in
politics and she has as well. She’s known and met everyone
in the community and has been a part of Broward County
her whole life along with me. We’ve integrated art and
politics.”
Shrago’s first fundraising success was cold-calling
Plantation-based American Express. She secured a check
for $10,000. At the time, the arts were being slashed in
public schools. Shrago began to feel it was her mission to
replace whatever arts the children were losing in school
with her museum.
“Arts are what teach you about every subject matter,” she
says. “They integrate math, science, history. Kids can learn
about measurements from a sculpture.”
Shrago was also an early advocate of recycling and ecology.
She made sure to incorporate lessons on these topics in
her museum, always in a fun way. Another steadfast goal
was to focus on teaching art to the kids, not just showing
it. By 1991, the museum began offering studio art classes
for children, taught by professional artists. Scholarships,
underwritten by corporate and foundation partners, were
offered to children in need.
A key early supporter of Shrago’s mission was Broward
County Property Appraiser Lori Parrish. “Basically, Mindy
46 NOVEMBER 2013 | LMGFL.COM
Mindy Shargo is the creator, founder and CEO of the
Young At Art Museum—voted the “Best Children’s Art
Museum in the Nation” by Child Magazine.
and her mom created the concept of Young at Art at Mindy’s
kitchen table,” recalls Parrish. “I think it just evolved from
there. Mindy is a free-spirited liberal soul and she’s always
been interested in helping children from lower socioeconomic
backgrounds become exposed to the arts. I
just think Mindy wanted
everyone to love art like
she did.”
Parrish said it took a
while for corporate donors
to warm up to Shrago.
Parrish encouraged her to
start a “Women of Vision”
fundraising auxiliary,
asking 100 women to give
$1,000 a year, with Shrago
matching the donation
four-fold. The Women of
Vision auxiliary was formed
in 1995 and was highly
successful. Parrish would
also nudge corporations
like Wheelabrator and
Broward philanthropists
like Maya Ezratti, Director
of Community Relations
at GL Homes, to become
donors.
In 1998, with a grant
from the Broward County
Cultural Division, Young
at Art moved to its second
location—a 23,000-square
foot storefront in west
Davie. In keeping with the
mission of encouraging kids
to create art themselves, the museum featured lots of handson
arts and crafts projects. In one area, kids could learn
about various countries like Japan by seeing a short film,
sitting in a pagoda, and then creating their own morikami
art. In another area, kids would become archaelogists and
dig for relics in the sands of Egypt with tiny shovels. They
would get their “passports” stamped in each country.
The museum started garnering national attention. In
2002, Young At Art was named “Best Children’s Art Museum
in the Nation” by Child magazine. It was also about this time
that Shrago embarked on her mission to bring what she
sees as ‘healing art’ to disadvantaged youths. She began an
“artreach” program where artists would teach art to kids
at a homeless shelter every day after school. Now, a new
“Arthouse” is under construction in a low-income duplex
in the Sistrunk neighborhood of Fort Lauderdale. “We want
to make sure we’re touching every community member,”
Shrago says. “It takes a village, remember.”
But Shrago still wasn’t satisfied. She wanted a permanent
home for Young at Art, an utterly “green” building designed
by her and a hand-picked architect, one that would
incorporate generous space for exhibits, artist studios,
pottery rooms and outdoor kiln, a computer animation lab,

ecording studio and computer lab for
graphic design and gaming, birthday
party rooms, a volunteer lounge area
and a cafe and gift shop.
The solution came in 2006 when
Shrago signed a partnership with
Broward County to build a Young
at Art Museum that also housed a
Broward County Library Children’s
Reading Center. An exhaustive capital
campaign raised more than half of the
$21 million needed, while Broward
County contributed $5 million. The
Knights Foundation Arts Challenge
awarded Shrago a $500,000 grant.
The 11-acre building opened at
State Road 84 and Northwest 121st
Avenue in Davie in 2012. Mindy’s
mother retired shortly afterwards.
“The partnership with Broward
County Libraries created a synergy
that merged literacy with art,” Shrago
says. “And the library is open seven
days a week, so there is no dead space
on weekends.”
Shrago used her charm to persuade
experts from some of the nation’s
finest museums, including The Getty,
Museum of Modern Art in New York,
Noguchi Museum, Museum for African
Art, Chicago Children’s Museum and
Brooklyn Museum of Art, to convene in
a symposium to help cook up a master
plan of exhibits for the museum. Janet
Rice Elman, executive director of the
Association of Children’s Museums,
called the efforts of Shrago and her
mother “simply astounding.”
The Young at Art Museum features the finest, state-of-the-art studios for ceramics,
printmaking, cartooning, photography, mixed media, drawing and painting.
“To have founders who opened a
museum—and this is now the third
location—and see it through three
different capital campaigns is very
unusual,” says Elman. “I cannot
think of another example in the field
of founders who founded and refounded
a museum. I think these
two women had sheer determination
and unbelievable vision and drive to
push this forward.” After touring the
newest incarnation of the museum
recently, Elman called it “fantastic…
I love the way the library is nestled in
the middle of the museum. Libraries
are traditionally community gathering
places, so it all makes sense.”
If there is one person not surprised
by Shrago’s accomplishments, it’s her
husband who is now a mediator. “Art
has always been Mindy’s passion,”
says Spechler. “She eats, drinks and
sleeps Young at Art. I supported her
100 percent.”
Indeed, the entire family is
passionate about art; the couple’s
two children, Ali and Zack, are both
artists. Shrago and her husband
have a sizeable art collection in their
Hollywood Lakes house as well as in
their Manhattan home.
A workaholic who wakes up at 5:30
a.m. daily, Shrago has few interests
outside of art. She recently vacationed
in Italy with her husband, where she
viewed plenty of artwork, and spends
her days off at art museums. She
recently visited the Norton Museum
of Art in West Palm Beach. A friend
texted her to see where she was.
“I’m at a museum,” she responded.
“Art heals.”
DINING
Food like art is subjective. But
I know when I experience fare
prepared by a true artisan
chef. And this is clearly the
case with Executive Chef Joshua
Hedquist believes in more than just
commitment to providing guests
with quality, naturally-sustainable
and locally-farmed food is part
of a movement of conscientious
restaurateurs and chefs offering a
responsible and high quality product.
Few restaurants can make the claim
that the meat and poultry served are
antibiotic- and hormone-free, and
humanely raised on a vegetarian
diet. In layman’s terms, this means
that the food is ‘natural’ in the most
basic sense, raised free of anything
artificial. The seafood is likewise wildcaught
and locally sourced, while the
produce is grown pesticide-free on
Florida farms. The Butcher Block
mozzarella appetizer. It’s fun to watch
and worth the 90 seconds from prep
to plate. The server starts with the
cheese curd, adds 190-degree water
and hand pulls the mozzarella until a
velvety texture is reached. I’ve never
seen this anywhere else in my travels.
Yellow and red heirloom tomatoes,
micro basil, organic olive oil and vin
cotto (translated as “cooked wine”)
make a mozzarella-lover want to keep
this plate all to themselves. Share it
though, and order the super lump
crab cake as well. The crust on the
outside is weightless and the crab is
select.
The meat choices are plentiful.
Sizes and cuts range from a twelveounce
New York Strip to a twenty-four
ounce cowboy Rib-Eye. For those
with an appetite there’s a thirty-two
ounce Porterhouse steak, and if you
enjoy filet mignon, a six and ten ounce
center cut is available. All steaks are
served with red wine demi (sauce),
hand cut malt vinegar steak fries (of
course) and butcher butter (a rich
butter made from the trimmings of
the steak); the chef loves to use as
much of the animal as possible, and
the butcher butter compliments the
outstanding flavor of the meat. You
will leave nothing on your plate. It is
first-class all the way.
The Veal Tomahawk Chop had me
from the moment
I set eyes on the
plate. The large
onion ring wrapped
around the bone is
accompanied with
grilled asparagus,
roasted garlic asiago
mashed potatoes
(divine!) and touched
with saltimbocca
sauce. This first cut
of the loin chop was
juicy and tender, and
the taste astonishing.
And I refused to share
the crispy onion ring
even though it could
have served three.
candy. The scrumptious taste is
enhanced by heirloom tomato butter
sauce, fresh thyme and shallots, and
augmented by roasted fingerlings and
asparagus. The texture was smooth
but firm. The local snapper served
is also worthy, with sweet corn,
heirloom bean succotash, corn nage
and saffron oil elevating this dish. (In
case you aren’t familiar with the term
“nage,” it is a flavored liquid usually
made for poaching delicate foods.)
Still looking for something really
natural? How about some Goat
Cheesecake? Made from scratch like
everything else and
served with fresh
berries. Distinctively
special! If you love
strawberries, the
shortcake is just the
right amount of sweet
to end an ideal meal.
And if you are looking
for something sexy,
the chocolate lava
cake is just the thing.
I’m still dreaming of
the Heath nut brittle
topping.
The interior
of Butcher
Block is pretty
straightforward, with
modern designer furniture and a little
bit too much noise for our taste. But
there is plenty of seating outside with
a view of the fountains, and even if
rain drives you indoors, the food will
soothe any discomfort.
South Florida public relations,
advertising and social media
marketing fi rms know a few simple
rules for website engagement:
Content must be constant, current
and on topic.
What does this mean? If you want
your blog to get indexed by the search
engines (a process called search
engine optimization, or SEO) and
then found and read by prospective
clients, your content must be…
• Constant. You must blog or
refresh your content areas all the time.
Blogging and website management
don’t exist under some “set it and
forget it” marketing practice. Once
a week is the minimum to keep the
search engines happy. Twice a week
or more is even better.
• Current. It should be up to date
with the latest news relevant to
your industry. If you notice that the
news is reporting that people are
searching for a popular new line of
purple peaches, then your boutique
specialty food market had better be
blogging about purple peaches, and
then sharing those posts on your
Facebook, Twitter and other social
media.
• On topic. On the other hand, if
you run a South Florida law fi rm or
a national accounting practice, or
an upscale shopping mall, then your
audience likely isn’t coming to your
site to learn about purple peaches.
But they will be coming to your site
– or one like it – for information on
legal or accounting issues, or for
news, trends or inquiries about the
latest fashions.
One of the high-level fi ndings of a
recent Google Benchmarking Report
noted that content is vital to customer
engagement online. According to one
report, it’s important to “Focus on
compelling content. When it comes
to creating content for your site,
what’s the cardinal rule? Don’t be
boring. Whatever business you and
your clients are in, there are always
inventive ways to make the topics
more interesting,’ the report’s author
noted. Use your imagination. Get
creative. Use stories and personal
anecdotes to make content come
alive.”
At Boardroom Communications,
our clients have the power of
“engagement” of social media.
Those companies that handle their
own social media also know the
importance of the three rules –
creating content that is constant,
current and on topic.
Adhere to them, and Google – and
your customers – will notice, and
return.
Browsing the internet you may
have noticed links or ads offering
information about “how to save
money on auto Insurance”. If you are
like me you may have followed these
links only to fi nd that there is in fact
no information about buying auto
insurance simply the offer to quote
your coverage. My clients have often
asked me this same question. After
20 years of working with hundreds
carriers here are the secrets about
buying auto insurance.
First let’s discuss the most commonly
known rate factor in Auto Insurance,
driving history. Accidents and Tickets
will effect your rates whether points are
assessed or not. I always recommend
the use of Ticket Attorneys or Driving
School, these are easy ways to keep
violations off of your record. Accidents
are a bit more diffi cult. Insurance
companies use very sophisticated
systems to access what is called your
CLU Report. If you have an accident,
whether you receive a ticket or not, the
insurance company will fi nd it on your
CLU report. Any and all Insurance
claims activity is reported to CLU.
HOW TO SAVE
MONEY ON AUTO
INSURANCE
Always weigh the consequences of
reporting small accidents, speak with
your agent fi rst (the agent is your
representative) as these claims follow
you for up to 5 years.
Another common but uncontrollable
rate factor is age. From the ages of
16 to 21 drivers will pay nearly double
the rates they will pay when they are
30 to 60. When drivers begin to
reach their later years 60+ the rates
will quickly creep back up.
Finally, credit score makes up a
large portion of every clients rate.
Within the past 20 to 30 years the
importance of credit has grown. The
stability of the high credit client has
made them the most sought after
segment. Although most carriers
place a different amount of weight on
credit all major brands use it. Clients
with good credit, high prior coverage
limits and clean driving records are
the most sought after group and when
competition is high rates are low.
So back to the Question “how do
you save money on auto Insurance”?
Try to become the client that
Insurance companies are fi ghting to
reach. This Client has Good Credit, is
age 40-60, has a clean driving record,
carries high liability limits, stays with
their carrier for 3 to 5 years at a time
and bundles products with one agent.
I always suggest that clients use
the services of an Independent agent
that represents many carriers and
can offer bundling services such as
Auto, Home, Umbrella and Marine
Insurance to maximize discounts. Also
remember that the agent represents
you in contrast to in house call center
employees like those used by internet
sales carriers.
A COUNTDOWN
FOR A SUCCESSFUL
MERGER
Getting two companies together is
often like trying to arrange a marriage.
There are often post merger issues
that undermine the original intent and
goals. Those issues can be fatal to the
merger, but when mergers work, they
can work brilliantly.
I don’t have to go far to outline
a great merger. Three years ago,
Transworld Business Brokers and
United Franchise Group merged
Franchisemart/Biz One Brokers and
Transworld into Transworld Business
Advisors. Since that time, Transworld
Business Advisors has grown to over
80 units across the United States,
and has set up franchised offi ces
in Canada, Central America and
the Middle East. We are ranked us
as one of America’s Top Franchise
Opportunities for the last three years,
and as one of the Top Fastest-Growing
Franchises in the world for the last two
years by Entrepreneur Magazine.
Transworld Business Advisors is
now a company that is a leader in:
• Business Brokerage – selling
existing companies
• Franchise Consulting – helping
people choose and buy a franchise
(we have over 200 available)
• Franchise Development –
helping successful companies
franchise their concept.
Why is our merger working?
7. Complementary Strengths –
Transworld Business Brokers was
a leader in business brokerage with
over 30 years of experience. United
Franchise Group was a franchising
giant for over 25 years, growing brands
like Signarama and Embroidme.
Together we are the experts at both
brokerage and franchising.
6. Humble Leadership – Yes,
perhaps Ray Titus and I have pretty
big egos, but we both have the ability
to listen, admit when we are wrong,
and communicate effectively, honestly,
and with respect. We have clearly
defined leadership roles in our merged
fi rms that are working extremely well.
5. Individualized Systems – We
recognize not all economies of scale
can be realized, and trying to force
some of the companies’ individual
departments and systems together
can cause chaos. Some of Transworld
Business Advisor’s systems will
remain independent of some of the
systems at United Franchise Group
due to our differing services.
4. Harmonious Employees – The
staffs of both companies “get it.” It isn’t
always easy bringing two groups of
employees together. The philosophy
of “it was better before the merger,”
or “the old (or OUR) system was
more effective and easier” creeps
ups often. However, with continued
education, strong leadership, positive
reinforcement, and addressing the
concerns, it leads to an eventual “buy
in.”
3. Acceptance – Accepting that
nothing is perfect and there will be
bumps and bruises along the way is
very important. Integration is never
smooth or rarely goes exactly
as planned. By focusing on the
positives, and having an eye on
the merged company’s strategic
goals can get any merger through
anything that transpires.
2. Profitability! – Any merger
is going to be easier to manage
if there are not cash fl ow issues.
Transworld Business Advisors
Offices Nationwide
954-772-1122
www.tworld.com
ac@tworld.com
has been profi table from day one.
The fact that both companies have
conservative money philosophies has
clearly worked well for us.
1. Our Idea and Plan Worked –
We are a much better company after
the merger. We absolutely could not
have achieved this level of success as
quickly without each other’s expertise
and resources. Our franchise system
has proven to be successful and we
look forward to watching our franchise
and franchisees fl ourish across the
world.
Being an entrepreneurial company
requires taking risks. Mergers are
risky, but if you minimize the downside
though great legal advice, proper
paperwork and acquisition guidance
from qualifi ed professionals (like the
ones at Transworld Business Advisors),
the upside is well worth pursuing!
This gorgeous setting has been the choice
of many newlywed couples and provides
the perfect backdrop for the romance and
luxury that couples have come to expect
when on their honeymoon. With its own
shade of blue water, complimented by the
whitest beach sand, no honeymooner has
ever been disappointed by the magic that is
the Maldives.
From the first moment your eyes see the
trademark stilted water villas to your last
evening of unimaginably tasty cuisine, you
the Maldives is done via Asia or Europe,
therefore can be a lengthy trip. But don’t let
this put you off; a day spent in the company of
the resident marine life will assure you that
you have made the right choice. Manta Rays,
dolphins and barracudas are abundant in
the waters surrounding these islands. With
coral reefs, caves and caverns there is no
shortage of places to explore with a mask
and snorkel. If you are more experienced,
the diving in the Maldives is among the best in
the world. For the adventurous traveler you
may want try your hand at kite-boarding,
windsurfing or banana boat riding. Whatever
your choice, you are sure to find the Maldives
has something to “float your boat!”
We have access to some of the most
exclusive and beautiful island resorts that
resonate with intimate luxury. Whether you
mothers, sisters, daughters and granddaughters sharing a day of fashion and
shopping together while supporting TBO’s Sisterhood.
THE CAUSE Sisterhood uses the proceeds from the Fashion Show and
Boutique to support the Temple’s general fund and projects that the Temple
participates in. It also supports the projects of its national umbrella organization,
Women of Reform Judaism. Sisterhood funds support the families in our religious
school, Early Childhood Center and Life Long Learning opportunities, which
are open to the community. TBO also participates in and has hosted the Unity
Service of Coral Springs. One of the most important projects of the Temple is the
Rabbi Gross Food Closet, which for the last 27 years, has distributed bags of food
to needy residents of the community. Sisterhood and the Temple also support
and participate in Pink Week and Relay for Life, as well as conducting drives for
Kids in Distress, JAFCO and Family Central.
Temple Beth Orr is a dynamic Reform congregation warmly welcoming, seniors,
singles and families of all ages including interfaith families. It is located at 2151
Riverside Drive in Coral Springs.
“During the day my energy level was so low I couldn’t
stay awake. After having a sleep study at Broward
Health Coral Springs’ Sleep Disorders Center, the
experts found that my breathing stopped periodically
preventing me from getting a restful night’s sleep.
Since my treatment, I now sleep soundly through
the night, thanks to the specialized team of medical
professionals. Today I have enough energy to not
only keep up with my two Boxers, I lead the pack!”
-Greg Bolinsky
Make your dreams come true by finding a sleep
solution with our experienced and specialized
medical team. The Sleep Disorders Center offers
a comprehensive program that is dedicated to the
There’s no excuse to ignore your health.
Especially since our surgery options fit your life.
Excuses are a dime a dozen. Solutions, however, are rare. That’s why your Broward County HCA
hospitals are the rarest of the rare — healthcare providers that fit into your life instead of vice
versa. For general surgery, we offer the latest techniques, including procedures with the da Vinci®
robotic surgery system (for smaller scars, less pain and quicker recovery) — all scheduled when
it’s convenient for you. Don’t make excuses. Make a call to 954-724-6349 or visit us online to find
out why you should have your surgery at the HCA Hospitals of Broward County.
