Structured Financial Messaging System The Structured Financial Messaging System (SFMS) is a secure and common messaging platform for intra-bank and inter-bank applications. A SWIFT-like system to fulfill the needs of domestic financial messaging, the SFMS can be used for all purposes of secure communication within and between banks. The SFMS is a modularised and web enabled software, with a flexible architecture facilitating centralised or distributed deployment. The access control is through Smart Card based user access and messages are secured by means of standard encryption and authentication services conforming to ISO standards (PKI). Special features like Secure File Transfer, useful for transferring any data/information in a secure manner and easy-to-use Application Programming Interfaces to integrate with other applications, are exclusive to the SFMS. Various RBI applications like Real Time Gross Settlement (RTGS), Integrated Accounting System (IAS), Currency Chest Operations, and Government Transactions have interface with the SFMS for messaging. Moreover, use of SFMS is not restricted only to computerised or partially computerised branches. Mail Messaging System IDRBT's Mail Messaging System (IMMS) is another major industry-level initiative that provides the best option for easy and secure communication within the bank and between banks with seamless integration to the Internet with appropriate and adequate security. The IMMS provides a unique corporate e-mail facility to the Banks that enables the users to have a single, permanent e-mail address, like designation@bankname.co.in or username@bankname.co.in. The designation-based official e-mail addresses provide instant access to the new incumbent and the user-name-based demi-official e- mail address provides instant access to a particular person, wherever s/he goes, without the need for changing the e-mail address. WALKING THE TALK: Dr. Bimal Jalan, arriving at the Institute for presenting the IDRBT Banking Technology Awards With over 20,000 mails passing through the system on weekdays and 20 Public Sector Banks, including the Reserve Bank of India making use of it, the IMMS is one of the largest Messaging Systems in the country. Banking Technology Awards In order to infuse a spirit of healthy competition among the Public Sector Banks of the country, IDRBT instituted the Banking Technology Awards in the year 2001. These Awards are meant to act as catalysts by recognising and rewarding the efforts of banks aimed at better use of technology, greater levels of technology absorption and improved levels of customer service and satisfaction. The Awards are given away in five categories: Best Bank Award - Delivery Channels Best Bank Award - Business Computerisation Best Bank Award - Back Office Applications Best Branch Award - Techno-Savvy and Customer-Friendly Branch Special Branch - Techno-Savvy and Award Customer-Friendly Branch
These Awards, the best indicators of the rate of technology implementation and absorption in the Public Sector Banks, are presented at the Annual Conference of Chairman and Managing Directors (CMDs) and Executive Directors (EDs) of all Public Sector Banks in India, held at IDRBT, Hyderabad. Counselling the Captains The Institute organises the IDRBT Annual Conference to focus the personal attention of the CEOs of banks on the important issues in technology upgradation and innovation in the Sector. This conference, provides a forum for the captains of public sector banks, to share their experiences and concerns on various matters relating to technology adoption and absorption. It is addressed by the Governor of Reserve Bank of India, Secretaries from the Union Ministry of Communication and Information Technology, renowned Academicians and eminent leaders from the Industry. IDRBT also organises workshops, seminars and conferences for the benefit of IT Chiefs of Banks regularly. These meets focus on the entire gamut of economic and managerial issues in implementing technology initiatives in banks. Focussed presentations, debates and deliberations on crucial applications like Core Banking, ATM Services and Messaging Solutions form the basic agenda for these meets. Academic Initiatives Research and Development The Research and Development activities of the Institute are aimed at expanding the frontiers of knowledge to meet the specific needs of the Banking and Financial Sector. While addressing the immediate concerns of the Banking Sector, the Research at the Institute is focused towards anticipating the future needs and requirements of the sector and developing technologies to address them. Presently, the Focal Research Areas of the Institute, are: HIT THE TARGET: Shri Vepa Kamesam, Chairman, IDRBT, stressing on the need to technologise the sector at the earliest during the IDRBT Annual Conference Financial Networks and Applications Electronic Payments and Settlement Systems Security Technologies for the Financial Sector Technology Based Education, Training and Development Financial Information Systems and Business Intelligence A galaxy of focused Research Projects, which include long-term basic, developmental, application-oriented and industry-oriented projects form the crust of our Research activities. The Institute has already completed quite a few Research Projects and the results of this Research are being implemented in the Indian Banking and Financial Sector. IDRBT is also involved in nationally important Research Projects in association with the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology, Government of India; Reserve Bank of India; and other reputed organisations.
