My fellow anglers and friends,
This month has been really quite exciting with the world cup
fever hitting hard on many of us. The zombie apocalypse can
be seen with many fellow football fans walking around with
little sleep. Maybe, that could be the reason why the flu virus
went into high gear afflicting so many. Lack of sleep also equals lower immune systems.
Last month was the month of the Angling And Outdoor Recreation Fair 2014 in Shah
Alam. It was an event that brough anglers from all over to one meeting point and I met
and caught up with lots of long unseen freinds. There were lots to see as fishing tackle
distributors showed off their capabilities and future launches. 2015 will be a very exciting
year for fishing with crazy gears to play with.
A big chunk of this issue is dedicated to the above mentioned fair sharing with you
what we saw, what we liked, what we did, and what we thought to be interesting. If only
the more big names took part, this fair would have been a super blast.
As parents that fish I am sure you would like your kids to share your hobby. I certainly
do as fishing is not only a healthy sport but a sport where knowledge about nature, the
environment, etc. is gained.
We at The Asian Angler encourage you to take your kids fishing and we have started a
section dedicated to junior anglers. Read what our junior angler and reporter shared in
this issue. We will do what we can to get more kids hooked on fishing.
Enjoy this month’s issue and Salam Ramadhan dan Selamat Berpuasa to all our
muslim friends.
Thank you anf happy fishing.
Cheers,
New Abu Garcia Horne
By Philemon Foo

25
t Stinger
The Abu Garcia Hornet Stinger series
has been one of my favourites since
I first bought one some 6 years ago. I
loved how it performed and it was one
of those rods that went with me on
almost all my fishing trips. When I was
asked to test the latest Hornet Stinger
rods, I was more than delighted to.

27
Sporty
Good
Looker
While the older Hornet Stingers came
in black with green lines, colours resembling
very much to that of the
Green Hornet (not sure to call him a
superhero or not); this new one is a lot
better looking. I would say by more
than a mile.

29
Carbon
Fibre
X-Wrap
This new Hornet Stinger is sporty looking
with carbon fibre wrap and carbon
fibre X wrap at the butt section while
the tip is old school Hornet Stinger of
which was the action that many anglers
fell in love with. This configuration
gives the new Hornet Stinger a solid
and stiffer butt section while the tip
remains as good as the old one.

31
Low Resin
Blank
Construction
To further reduce weight, Abu Garcia
uses a low resin blank for the Hornet
Stinger. This not only reduces further
the weight of the rod, it also helps improve
sensitivity with a more evened
out power to the rod.

33
CORK
+
EVA
The new Hornet Stinger comes with
mix handles being cork handle at the
reel with a carbon fibre screw lock and
an EVA rear handle. To give it some
extra “bling” Abu Garcia added metal
rings to it and sealed the EVA in with
a rubber piece that shows off the Royal
Swedish Crest.

35
Better
Sensitivity
With Cork
Cork being the chosen material for
the handle at the reel seat area (where
the rod is held) adds to performance.
Natural sork gives better sensitivity if
compared to EVA, synthetic cork, and
/ or rubber. It is also lighter. The drawback
is that it is prone to damage due
to insects and also dryness. But for the
Hornet Stinger, they hit it right.

37
Rubber
Is Good
Using a rubber right at the rear end
makes a lot of sense. Anglers tend to
stand their rods on its butt. Cork is
slippery and it damages easier. Plastic
would be ugly as hell and slippery.
Metal will dent and / or scratch, and
not to mention... is slippery. Rubber
makes so much sense being not slippery
and being able to withstand damage
better.

39
Quality
Fuji
Components
The new Hornet Stinger comes with
Fuji’s New Concept guides with Alconite
rings and in SMG or Semi Micro
Guide formats. This further saves on
weight and at the same time improves
performance of lines (Alconite disperses
heat fast) ensuring lesser line
damage, and is tough. There is also the
improvement of casting accuracy with
these guides.
* There are also models with the MGS
guides (Micro Guide System).

41
Fuji Reel
Seat
Another Fuji component is the reel
seat of which is the ECS reel seat on
the casting rod that I tested. One thing
good about these reel seats is that they
hold on the reels well is size is right.
Another good thing is that there is an
opening beneath where one’s finger is
in constant contact with the blank giving
better sensitivity.

43
Pressure
Test
The new Hornet Stinger for this test is
a medium action rated 6-14lb rod. To
see if it will stand up to what is claimed
on the rod we brought it to our lab and
gave it the pressure test. It passed the
test at about 15.2lb although somewhat
unwillingly (with popping sounds).
Anyhow, it did not break and we gave it
the thumbs up.

45
Field
Test
We took the new Hornet Stinger to a
few commercial ponds including our
usual one and invited testers as well as
other anglers fishing there to give the
Hornet Stinger a try. We had a blast of
a time and we caught some fish too.

47
Casting
Ability
The new Hornet Stinger cast pretty well
just like its older sibling and baits were
sent far into the distance. Of course the
well maintained reel played a part as
well but the rod is a good caster. It has
a tip that is forgiving enough to bend
and with good recoil to shoot the baits
(and lures) out.

49
Fighting
Ability
While we caught a good number of fish
one in particular stood out. We handed
the rod to angler who was fishing with
us to play with. Being not used to fishing
a right hand crank baitcasting reel,
we could see him struggling a bit.

51
Landed
Finally
After a while the fish was landed and
he was somewhat exhausted having
to fight the fish with his left hand.
After regaining composure he gave
his thumbs up to the rod and looked
impressed with it. The new Hornet
Stinger does have power in its blank of
which helps with the fight.

Verdict
All who tested the new Abu Garcia
Hornet Stinger loved the rod and had
only good things to say. The only lesser
of a good remark we got was from one
angler who wished that the rod would
have been priced much lower but he
too agrees that for the Hornet Stinger
to be within his budget it will be a totally
different rod. All in all a very good
rod.
Penn Pursuit II
The Unassuming Beast
By Philemon Foo

When we talk about cars;
Porsches, Ferraris, Lamborghinis,
Aston Martins, and a few other
speed machines always get the
oohs and the aaaahhhhs... No one
drools over boring looking sedans
or hatchbacks that look like
cars made for the sole purpose
lowering someone’s self esteem.
55

57
Unassuming
By
Design
But there are unassuming and
boring looking cars that were
made to beat the living daylights
out of these fast sexy supercars
and a good example is the Audi
RS4, an unassuming and somewhat
boring looking car made
for the sole purpose of eating
Porsches and spitting them out
during its hay days. This too is
the case of the Penn Pursuit II.

59
Plain
Jane
Design wise, the Pursuit II, to
me at least, looks like it was designed
by some guy who used to
design Volvos about 20 odd years
ago. It comes in matt black with
bits of chrome here and there,
and an aluminium handle in, well,
aluminium colour.

61
Black On
Black
Looking all about the Pursuit II, I
just cannot find any part of its design
interesting enough to make
me jump up and dance. Black coloured
painted spool with shiny silver.
Black coloured bail arms and
wires. No unique design features
and no special cut outs or anything
that would stand it out from
a crowd. The Pursuit II makes plain
ol’ Jane look sassy.

63
Power
Unleashed
While the colours and design
cues are unassuming and somewhat...yaawwwwnnnn....
it is
when one turns the handle that
this reel turns into a beast. Just
like the Audi RS4, the Penn Pursuit
II unleashes its power and
shows off it performance.

65
Smooth
Performance
Turn the handle and the feeling of
smooth gearing is instantly felt.
While the smoothness felt is unlike
what you get in more expensive
reels, sometimes to the point
where the reels feel hollow and
out of touch, it is smoother that
quite a few reels within its price
range.

67
Techno
Balanced
The rotor is made of graphite
and it flexes to somewhat. However
the flex is not felt during the
heavy loads. It is also well balanced
will minimal feel of wobbliness.
The Pursuit II uses a Techno
Balanced rotor that is said
to give it extra smooth winding
even under heavy loads of pressure.

69
Tough
Body
The Pursuit II comes with a tough
graphite body that hardly flexes
even at the stem. It feels really
solid and tough. Using graphite
instead of metal has a few benefits
such as weight saving and
corrosion resistance.

Drag
Smoothness
Test
Back at our lab we put it through
some torture to see how well it
holds up. We had in our hands
the size 3000 reel (PURII3000) the
smallest in its stable with a max
drag rating of 10lb of which is fair
for a saltwater reel. The reel drag
remained smooth up to almost
9lb.

73
Max Drag
Test
Further tightening the drag we
got it to a maxed out 11.6lb. Not
bad for a small sized reel. What
sits inside the Pursuit II’s drag
system uses oil felt drag washers
giving it the smoothness and
drag pressure needed when one
is punching out with a fish.

Field
Test
To put this beast to the test we
booked ourselves a boat and shot
straight for Pekan (a coastal town
on the east coast of the Malaysian
peninsular). There we did some
light jigging for some heavy fighters.

77
Small
Powerhouse
Diamond trevallies were the order
of the day and we caught a lot
of them. The Pursuit II was certainly
at home. Being one of the
smallest reels on this trip it did
exceptionally well. The unassuming
beast lashed out and beat the
heck out of quite a few diamond
trevallies ranging from about
5kg to 9kg. The reel performed
smoothly without glitch.

uit-II
Verdict
The Penn Pursuit II is a tough
unassuming reel of which is not
too expensive making it a value
for money reel to any angler who
wants a strong performer but on
a low budget. What I like about
reels of such is that they look like
any normal reel but they kick ass.
Oh yes! The Audi RS4 is one of
my favourite cars.
Viper Spike Fast Drop
By Philemon Foo

81
Jigs
Light
Jigging
Craze
Light jigging has been the craze lately
and there are more and more anglers
hopping onto this band wagon of metal
anglers. I was talking to a “young
uncle” who doesn’t fish but likes to eat
fish. He says that we waste good food
like prawns and squid using them as
bait. I said, no. The fishes that I catch
eat metal, plastic, and rubber. Then I
showed in a jig which got him cracked
up.

83
Field
Testing
Yes, jigging is indeed a wonderful sport
and I had the opportunity recently to
“test drive” some jigs. One of them is
the Viper Spike jigs. We took them to
the waters of Pulau Pemanggil where
we field tested them out to see how effective
these jigs are.

85
Looks
Famous
Jiggers the term now shared with the
alcoholic industry, but in this sense,
a more sporting outlook on people
who fish; I am sure know of the IMA
Ganpeki Gun jigs, one of the deadly
jigs around. Well, this is a lookalike of
which simply means similar but not all
the same, but it works.

87
Fast
Droppers
What I like about them is that they
drop rather fast. A release of the spool
sends the Viper Spike riding solo
downwards and before long starts a
slow rhythm of jigging to the beat of
old rock ballads. Heavy metal kicks in
when the rod dips and you are on to a
fish.

89
Tantalizing
Colours
The Viper Spike jigs come in tantalizing
colors. Of which includes rainbow
coloured, green and brown tiger coloured,
yellow and silver, laser blue,
laser silver, and black silver. My favourite
is the one in laser silver with three
green luminous stripes. This is great
especially for deeper waters.

Queens
Like Them
The first fish to hit this silver laser of a
jig was a hard fighting queenfish. I allowed
the jig to drop to the bottom.
Raised it up about three feet and started
jigging. It was on one of the drops
that sent the rod tip bowing and me
holding on and striking.

These Jigs
Really Work
Even our boatman the every entertaining
Mat Rompin loves this silver flasher.
He too caught numerous fishes on
it. Amongst the fishes that like flashing
laser silver with green luminous glow
are queenfish, diamond trevallies, sagai
(bumpnose trevally), groupers, and
mackerels (we lost a lot of jigs). Well,
some of them just love shiny things.

95
Good Field
Test Trip
We had lots of hits including those
with other colours like the rainbow laser
coloured jigs and the blue jigs making
this jigging trip a very successful
one.

97
Verdict
The Viper Spike jigs work and they
have proven themselves on this trip.
They dive fast so that you do not need
too much patience waiting for your jig
to touch the bottom, and they work
great, being a close relative to the famous
IMA Ganpeki Gun jigs, and they
don’t cost that much. No brainer really...
I just love them.

Test Drives
Okamoto A-EX Lead
By Philemon Foo

101
er
Leader lines are very important as
they are tied directly to hooks or lures
and they must be able to take a beating
from the fish as well as what’s in their
mouth (teeth). One of the many leader
lines that we have tested is the soft
yet strong Okamoto A-EX Super Soft
Leader lines.

103
No Frills,
Pocket Easy
The Okamoto A-EX Super Soft Leader
lines are no frills low budget leader
lines or rather low priced leader lines
that are available in the market. They
are as the name implies, soft of which is
softer than most monofilament leaders
available in the market. Soft also means
better manageability.
The Okamoto A-EX Super Soft Leader
lines claims to be made in Japan and
perhaps is made in Japan as there are
a lot of soft lines that are coming out
of Japan. Most of these lines are thinner
and softer with some not achieving
their specified break strengths.
The A-EX leader line is also thinner in
diameter as compared to many of the
lines that are available in the market
that are of the same poundage. This
lead me to think that perhaps the A-EX
too is not really to specs.

Straight Line
Break Test
To test this I took the line we had and
ran though our line break test meter.
First a straight line test followed by
a knot strength test. We did 5 break
tests for each category using a 15lb line
sample and for the straight line test the
average result is at 15.6lb of which is
above the 15lb specified.

105

Knot Strength
Break Test
The knot strength on the other hand
came in at an average of 11.3lb. This
was done based on a blood knot and
the broken points were at the knots.
Like a lot of lines out of Japan, the
Okamoto A-EX I believe is rated based
on straight line tests and not based on
knot strength.

107

Field
Testing
We tested the A-EX leader at a pond
in Perak casting lures for toman (giant
snakehead). Being a soft leader, lure
management was also easier. I was using
a variety of lures from poppers, to
walkers, and to crank baits and I used a
25lb A-EX leader. They all did well and
I hooked up a few tomans.
Being soft lines they have one other
weak point and that is abrasion. The
A-EX can handle some abrasion but
not as much as stiffer thicker leaders
can.

109

Verdict
The Okamoto A-EX Super Soft Leader
lines are for the budget conscious. They
are manageable lines being softer leaders.
Its weakness is its knot strength.
It is not bad a leader for the price but
do remember I would discount the
poundage on the package by about
20%. Either that or use FG knots where
the mono leader is not knotted thus
eliminating this weakness.

THE MONSTER
* Super smooth
* Sinks faster than mono
* Almost invisible under
Introducin’
VFOX Accessory
By Philemon Foo

115
Bag
When it comes to fishing and outdoor
bags, VFOX has got quite a lot to offer
and one of them is an accessory bag
made of an EVA / hypalon like material
called the VFOX Accessory Bag model
VD-911. I have seen these types of bags
used for spectacles and sunglasses, as
well as compact cameras.

117
Shock
Absorption
The VFOX Accessory Bag is a
case built using EVA or hypalon
type material which gives some
amounts of shock absorption.
As with some of the compact
camera cases available in the
market, it offers protection to
whatever is kept in it from dings
and scratches and certain forces
of impact.

119
Floats
Here is one very good advantage
of using this bag. It floats.
However, do note that it is not
water proof. Just that it is made
using materials that are buoyant
and is created in a way where air
is trapped within allowing the
bag or case to float for a certain
amount of time. Water will seep
in slowly via the zip and cloth
areas where the zip is located.

121
Reel/Fishing
Case
Having such qualities the VFOX
Accessory Bag or case is ideal
to be used as a reel case. It gives
ample protection especially on
trips where the terrain is rugged
and injuring reels tend to be
common. I am sure as anglers we
want to keep our fishing tackle
in the best possible condition.
The VFOX Accessory Bag can
certainly be used as a fishing
case on trips where one does not
use a lot of large lures and terminal
tackle. Small tackle boxes,
pony spool lines, other terminal
tackles and accessories can be
kept in it. The bag comes with a
carabineer that can be clipped to
one’s belt.

Verdict
Personally I will use the VFOX
Accessory Bag VD-911 as a reel
case as it offers really good protection
and I really love my reels.
I will also use it to keep certain
items that are important like my
wallet, car keys, phone, etc. (first
kept in a water proof plastic bag)
and secure it to me especially on
river fishing trips.
The reason I will use it is that in
case my canoe overturn (and it
has on a number of occasions)
I will not lose these items as the
case floats. Yes there are waterproof
pouches of which makes
better sense but if you need an
extra case, this works.
Special Report
Angling And Outdoor Recreation
By Philemon Foo

125
Fair 2014
The Angling And Outdoor Recreational
Fair 2014 was recently held in
Shah Alam, Malaysia on the 20th to the
22nd June 2014, where fishing tackle
brands and various “outdoor” related
companies came together to show off
some of their products both current as
well as those coming.
I made it there on the 20th of June and
it felt like a reunion of kids at a candy
store. The array of fishing tackle on
display brought out the kid in me and
I went gallivanting about the exhibition
hall like an adventurer seeking out
tools for a mission.
The Angling And Outdoor Recreational
Fair brought together anglers from
all over the country and some from faraway
lands and I had the opportunity
to catch up with old angling buddies,
some of which I have not met for some
time, and also made some new friends.

127
What’s On
The Table...
The organizers of the Angling And
Outdoor Recreational Fair had a variety
of activities to entertain visitors.
Some of these activities are coloring
contests for children, casting competitions,
quizzes, demonstrations and
talks by experts such as Hajime Murata
doing a casting demo on stage in this
picture.

so many new products on show. Some
of them are already available in stores
and some you will have to wait with
caught my eye.

137
Sang Lin
Tackle Sdn.
Bhd.
I like Quantum reels since laying hands
on the Quantum EXO reels some time
ago. Sang Lin Tackle Sdn. Bhd. the
distributor of Quantum reels here in
Malaysia showcased some of their reels
such as the Iron PT, Energy PT, Accurist
PT, Catalyst PT, Tour KVD (Kevin
VanDam) signature series, Team
KVD Reels, Vibe, Five-0, Fire, etc.
The ones that caught my attention are
Tour KVD reels, Team KVD reels, and
Accurist reels.

Being a fan of Kevin VanDam the KVD
look good both in action as well as in a
glass case but who buys these reels and
Try Breaking
This...
Sang Lin Tackle featured a few rods
during the show. Some of these rods
are really impressive such as the Orange
Fight jigging rods, Hearty Rise
rods, Samurai rods, Evolution rods,
Sitenkiba rods, etc. They feature a multi
modulus blank of which is light weight,
strong, balanced, and has a nice curve.
While looking at these rods I was invited
to a “sensible rod power test” with
the promise that if the rod breaks I will
not be held accountable. Obviously I
cannot let go of such an offer. So I held
on to the rod and tried to break it sensibly...
I failed.

ot
Sitenkiba
Rod
One of the rods they highlighted is the
Sitenkiba rod of which is a jigging rod
that handles up to 19kg weights. So if
you’re in the market for crazy heavy jig
rods, the Sitenkiba is indeed one you
should look at.
Bratos Reel
Accessories
Sang Lin Tackle also featured a line of
reel accessories of which are mainly
reel handles with Japanese whacky and
sporty designs. They most certainly
look cool but what’s more important
is that they are light. These accessories
are made of aluminium and carbon
Lures
Factory
Here is another eye candy. Lures Factory
in Thailand makes some really awesome
lures and Sang Lin Tackle showcased
a bunch of them. They come in
various designs with very good artwork
and finishing.

Crazy By
Design
I like crazy. In fact I embrace crazy. So
naturally I like these lures. With names
like Big Bob, Snake Lure, Monkey, Caiman
Popper, and Sushi Lures you know
that the designer(s) of these lures have
no box to think in.

Pick Of The L

153
ot
Monkey
Lure
I am not sure if a lure that looks like a
caiman, a monkey, a bird, or a snake
will catch you any fish (perhaps the
monkey eating tapah, scientifically
called the Wallago attu) but what I do
know is that for a lure to catch a fish
first it must catch the angler. These are
sure to catch lots of anglers.

Pick Of The L

155
ot
Mini
Those that I feel will catch you a fish
or two or even more would be those
that look like real fishes such as the
ones that look like juvenile giant snakeheads,
of course those that look like
frogs, and juvenile arowanas. Who
knows?

Pick Of The L

157
ot
Yozuri
Lures
Apart from the crazy designs of Lure
Factory, Sang Lin Tackle also showcased
Yozuri lures which are more normal
and proven. The new designs for
2015 that were featured during the fair
comes with new designs, more realistic
3D effects, and they already look delicious.
I just look the prawn lures. They look
really tasty. I can’t wait to get my hands
on some of them.

Other products by Sang Lin Tackle
include Bossna reels and Bossna rods,
Lecaro rods for electric reel users,
161
Perfect
Fishing
Perfect Fishing Sdn. Bhd. brought in
some of awesome products to whet the
appetite of anglers. With brands like
Waterland
Perfect Fishing showcased some products
from Waterland as well, mainly
lures and a few rods. Waterland is
owned by the legendary Hajime Murata.
Will his lures catch fish? Well, the
only way to find out is to use them but
the person himself will surely catch lots
of anglers.

Here is another showcased by Perfect
Fishing, An Lure. What makes them
special is that these lures are made
100% of teak wood. They are handmade
and they feel great. While more
lure brands move towards plastic, An
Lure for some reason decided to go
with teak of which is solid wood. I
need to test them out to see how they
perform. For now I already like the
concept.
Shimano
(Singapore)
Shimano is the biggest brand in this
year’s fair with a wide range of products
That is a whole lot of fishing tackle.

Stella
So I decided to look at the new Stella
reels of course since it is like the Rolls
Royce of the fishing world. What can
I say? I obviously want one. But I feel
their most important showcase is not
their rods or their reels but their Technology.

Techology

193
Spiral X
Construction
This technology is built within some
of the rods that Shimano makes. It is
basically in the construction of the
blank where the carbon tape used in
the blank runs in opposite or different
directions creating and X pattern. This
gives better power and a more even out
strength.

Techology

195
X Ship
This here is a gear technology offering
better durability, smoother cranking,
and improved casting performance.
What Shimano has done is to support
both ends of the pinion gear with bearings
allowing the pinion gear to maintain
precise alignment with the drive
gear.

Techology

197
G Free
Body
This technology moves the centre of
gravity closer to the rod by moving the
worm shaft oscillation mechanism towards
the top (Shimano says 19mm).
This is said to reduce fatigue while providing
the angler with better comfort.

Techology

199
Core
Protect
Core Protect simply means protection
to certain core sections of the reel of
which are the drag areas, certain body
sections, and line rollers. Protection
here simply means water resistance
of which translates to easier or lower
maintenance.

Techology

201
Magnum Lite
Rotor
This refers to a stronger lighter material
used to construct its rotors of which
is said to provide low start-up inertia
and reducing the rotor’s momentum
at the end of the cast giving complete
fishing control to anglers.
Other featured technologies include
X-Rigid Handle, X- Rigid Gear, Wave
Coil Springs, Micromodule Gear, Giga
Max Motor, and Muteki Motor.

fishing on land and in an air-conditioned
Coarse Fishing
Malaysia
Coarse Fishing Malaysia is a group of
Introducin’
Hulu Langat Fishing Pon
By Philemon Foo
We usually get invitations to test
fishing tackle products but this time
we were invited to test out a new
fishing pond that is targeted to be
launched on the 15th of July 2014.
This pond is the Hulu Langat Fishing
Pond of which is situated in
Hulu Langat, a town off Kuala Lumpur
city.

241
Pond In The
Making
The Hulu Langat Fishing Pond
started coming to life some three
years ago. Chan who is one of
the owners has been stocking the
place up with fishes of which consists
mainly of Mekong catfishes
also known as plabuk in Thailand.

Chalets
Being Built
When I first visited the place there
was a hive of activity going on in
the form of construction. Concrete
huts with platforms were being
built, the restaurant was being built,
there were no doors, no fences,
and even the toilets didn’t look
much like toilets, but the pond was
ready to be tested.

243

The
Preparation
With so much racket happening all
about I was wondering if we would
be catching anything. It was also
really hot that afternoon and I remembered
having to make my way
to one of the make shift toilets to
take a cool water bath. Still we did
some fishing and we caught some
fish. Chan was then still trying to
get the bait formula right...

245

247
Ready For
Launching
Recently we returned to the pond
and I was quite surprise at how fast
it took them to complete the place.
Now it looks like a fishing resort minus
the rooms for guest to stay in.
The place has all the comforts an
angler would need and more. Even
the softest of anglers will feel pampered
here.

Area
Configuration
The Hulu Langat Fishing Pond is a
rectangular pond (I can’t make out
the size) with fishing spots at both
the longer sections of the pond. It
is like a huge swimming pool slopping
in at the sides and then flattening
out at the bottom.

249

251
Common
Fishing Area
Upon entering the entrance to the
pond there is a very neat, tiled, and
open common fishing area. This
area is covered and will give you
ample protection from the elements
of which would be mainly rain and
heat from the sun.

253
Cool And
Comfortable
This area has lots of fans to keep
you cool, lots of taps to keep your
hand clean, and toilets to when the
need arises. There are also fishing
guides stationed here to help you
net or bring up your catch and do
what fishing guides normally do.

255
Private Huts
Or Chalets
I am not sure if these should be
called huts or chalets. What I do
know is that they are well built and
they look really nice with glass door
and windows. Each hut also has
a fishing platform without stilts or
stands at the bottom. This means
that if fish swims beneath the platform
and they do, your lines will not
get snagged. Each hut or chalet
will be assigned a guide.

257
Fishing From
The Platform
If you are wondering whether these
platforms can take the weight of
anglers (I did), I was given the
assurance that it will take up to
1000kg and that we are safe. Well,
I have fished there together with
a few other people and we didn’t
break any platforms.

259
A Sink And A
Place To Sit
At these platforms there is a place
to sit giving you additional comfort
while you fish be it under the hot,
hot sun, or the cool dark nights, as
well as a sink and a tap to wash
your hands and freshen up or cool
down.

261
Comfortable
Place To Chill
Within the walls of the chalets /huts
is a glass table and a few chairs
for anglers to kick back and relax.
Food can be ordered and the
restaurant will deliver of which is
great. I am hoping that they will air
condition the hut or chalets. Not
sure what their plans are as yet
other than installing fans.

263
Two Larger
Huts/Chalets
Amongst the huts/chalets there
are two larger units. Apart from being
larger in size they also come
with private toilets. Oh yes, the
other huts/chalets do not have built
in toilets and common toilets are
available at both ends of the row of
huts/chalets.

265
A Restaurant
As mentioned, there is a restaurant
by the pond that looks like a restaurant
one would expect to see at
a resort and not so much a fishing
pond. It looks great. During my last
visit the restaurant was ready but
the table and chairs have not been
set up. Well, I can’t wait to try out
the food.

267
Fishes
We have caught tilapias, haruans
(Channa striata), peacock bass, and
lots of Mekong catfishes. The highlight
of this pond is the Mekong catfish and
there are lots of them in the pond to
the tune of 8,000 during our time of
fishing and 12,000 pieces being prepared
for the launch. Average size is
said to be about 30kg although those
that we landed were around the 8kg to
15kg.

269
Big Fishes
Apart from those that we have caught
there are also red tail or Amazon catfish,
peacock bass (temensis), alligator
gar, and Chan may also put in some
arapaima gigas. With these in the pond
fishing there will certainly be exciting.

271
Fishing There
We’ve fished there during both day and
night times and we have caught a lot of
fish especially on my last trip. The construction
had stopped and it was quiet.
Fishes were not as spooked as they
were on my earlier trip. There seems to
be an eating pattern there.

273
Good Sizes
When we started fishing at about 9pm
(night fishing on the last trip) we had
lots of hits for about an hour. Then the
hit rate dropped. About an hour and
half later the feeding frenzy started
again for about an hour. In total we
caught and landed over 40 Mekong
catfishes, two haruans, and a few pieces
of tilapias.

275
Bait Formula
Found
Chan has indeed found the right bait
recipe for his pond and they are a hit
with the Mekong catfishes and tilapias.
What’s more interesting is that the bait
mix of which is powder, does not need
water to hold them together. Merely
squishing the mix (powder) together
forms a solid bait. Best of all, they do
not smell and they do not linger.

277
Recommended
Tackle
The Hulu Langat Fishing Pond will
supply you with the needed tackle but
should you want to bring your own,
my recommendation will be to bring at
least a medium heavy action rod, 20lb
lines, bait spring, and float; for fishing
the Mekong catfishes. Lighter tackle
works too but if there are lots of anglers
fishing, you may be pissing off a
lot of people.

279
Pricing And
Charges
The Hulu Langat Fishing Pond charges
are:
RM120.00 per rod per angler for four
hours of fishing. This is at the common
fishing area. With 4 paying anglers of
RM120.00 each, you can opt to fish at
the private huts/chalets. Of course if
you are alone but want to fish at the
private huts/chalets you can as long as
you are willing to pay the price of four
anglers.

Verdict
While there are a lot of commercial
fishing ponds out there offering
Mekong Catfish as one of the attractions,
the Hulu Langat Fishing
Pond is one of the most comfortable,
cleanest, and nicest places I
have fished in. Although it does not
look natural, it is certainly a resort
like fishing pond that will attract
many a city angler.
Knowledge Wise
Understanding Fishing Rods Part 14
Rod Handles - Hypalon
By Philemon Foo
I initially decided not to do an article on
Hypalon grips as they are quite similar
to EVA grips with the exception of a few
different characteristics, also they are being
used a lot less these days. However,
a friend suggested that it will be good to
make known the differences.

283

Hypalon
Hypalon and EVA may look similar
but they are different in terms
of composition. EVA is Ethylene
vinyl acetate of which is a copolymer
of ethylene and vinyl acetate
and is actually foam type
of material where as Hypalon of
which is actually chlorosulfonated
polyethylene is synthetic rubber.

285

287
Rubbery
Feel
Hypalon is synthetic rubber and
it feels rubbery. These handles
can be solid and compact or
soft and mushy. I do have a few
boat rods some with the soft and
mushy ones (older boat road)
and mostly compact solid ones
of which I prefer the feel to.

289
Heavier
Material
Hypalon is one of the heavier
materials used for making rod
handles. They are heavier than
EVA and cork, two of the more
commonly used materials for rod
grips. This is one of the reasons
why you do not see a lot of modern
casting and spinning rods
with them as anglers prefer lighter
rods.
Close up view of a Hypalon handle.

291
Soaks Up
Water
Yes, Hypalon soaks up water
and can get really mushy especially
the softer grips and when
in contact with slime from baits
and also fishes caught. This also
adds on weight especially when
you’re out fishing in the rain or
on a boat where water splashes
are quite common.

293
Low
Sensitivity
Being synthetic rubber Hypalon
is less sensitive as compared
to EVA. It dampens any vibrations
that try to make its way up
to your hands. This makes them
unsuitable for casting type luring
rods, finesse type rods, and
drop-shot type rods where sensitivity
is well needed.

295
Tough &
Durable
One good thing about Hypalon
is that they are amongst the
more durable materials used for
rod handles. This makes them
ideal for big game and boat rods
where the rods are left in a rod
holder most of the time and can
take the pressure and abuse
from the rod holder when a giant
of a fish takes the bait.
Thus these days you see Hypalon
mainly used on heavy boat
rods or big game rods and almost
unseen on bass or snakehead,
etc. casting rods. They are
more suited to rods where feel
and weight are less important
such as the above as well as bottom
fishing rods that sits in a rod
holder while the anglers waits for
the fish to bite.

297
Easy To
Clean
Hypalon handles are easier to
clean. As anglers we hold fish
and other slimy stuffs and slime
get transferred onto our rod handles.
Fish slime and other gooey
things can be washed out easily
with some soap and a brush.

Conclusion
Hypalon handles may be long
lasting and durable but because
of their other disadvantageous
they are seldom used these
days. There are rod builders who
use them mainly for heavier boat
rods or big game rods. They are
best used for such rods that take
a beating from rod holders.
Skill Enhancers
Coarse Fishing Basics
-Feeder Mania-
By Tengku Izzudin ‘The Guvnor’
The recent heightened interest
in coarse fishing has got me all
excited, a lot of anglers are asking
about feeder fishing and now
with a couple of local tackle shops
selling rods for feeder fishing together
with swimfeeders more and
more anglers can try their hand at
it.
Feeder fishing can be kept simpler
as compared to pole or waggler
fishing with the float, hence,
it will appeal well to newcomers to
coarse fishing. The simple rigs are
really effective and quick to learn
and use.
A groundbait cage feeder. This one is
handmade by Kevin Leach

301

303
Typical feeder rods are 10-13ft, the extra
length helps in casting longer distances
and many of the blanks are very
forgiving so that you may use lighter
line. The rods can come in 2 or 3 piece
sections with a shorter topmost section
called the quivertip. The main function
of the quivertip is to detect bites. The
bites are often registered when the tip
gets pulled round or dropped back.
Often, rod manufacturers will supply 2
or 3 different quivertips of different test
curves, this is to cater for weather conditions,
casting weight and the fish that
we are after. The lighter tips are good
to detect sensitive bites, but if the wind
and water tow are giving false indications
its best to move up to a heavier
tip.
An open-end swimfeeder. Available locally
from Hasya Joran at a really good price

305
So what exactly is a swimfeeder? The
basic shape is a weighted hollow tube
with at least one large opening to put
bait or groundbait in, and several
smaller openings or holes, to let bait or
groundbait out.
The concept of the feeder are as follows:
- groundbait or bait can be filled
into the swimfeeder that can then be
cast out to the area that we are fishing.
A method feeder with its mould. This
is fast becoming a local favourite.

307
- casting repeatedly builds up our
fishing area with a carpet of free food
for the fish to confidently feed in, and
one of the bait will have our hook in it
- the swimfeeder also acts as a
weight to help in casting out to our required
distance, sink our bait and with
the right setup, also acts as a self hooking
rig.
The weight is shown on the feeder

309
The swimfeeder is a pretty accurate
way to get bait to your catching area
/ swim. It is the ideal feeding method
when your swim is too far to feed by
hand or catapult. Once the swim has
been primed with groundbait and
loose free offerings of bait, usually a
shoal of fish will come and feed confidently
so all we need to do is wait for
that bite!
Get Your Kids Fish
Junior Anglers
An Initiative By The Asian Angler Magazine
Fishing is a very healthy sport.
As anglers we enjoy fresh air, we
experience nature, we improve
our analytical skills, we absorb
vitamins from the sun, we expend
our minds, we learn about the
environment, etc.
There are so many benefits to
fishing and we should reduce our
kids addiction to video games,
computer games, playing with
mobile devices, etc. We should get
them to interact more with our
environment and teach them a
thing or two about life and living
life.
With this in mind we hope to
encourage you to take your kid(s)
fishing and have dedicated a section
of our magazine to Junior
Fishing Is A Great
By Amirul Irfan
Fishing is a great sport.I started
fishing when I was 3,and I am
16 and still fishing.Once you
get hooked you are going to get
hooked for life.Fishing has been a
huge part of my life, and I will tell
you why.

Sport
317

My dad has been taking me fishing
since I was a kid.Fishing is
how I spend quality time with my
family and friends.

319

I have made lots of new friends
from fishing. I met some of them
on the water and the rest online.
It is great because we can share
our knowledge, and talk about
each other’s country.

321

Some friends post impressive
catches online. It motivates me
to fish harder and pursue my
dreams. Takatoshi Murase, a
Japanese angler has inspired me
through his “Passion Makes No
Borders” fishing tours around the
globe.

323

Fishing has taught me to respect and appreciate
nature. I choose to spend most
of my time fishing rather than hanging
out at a shopping mall with friends or
playing video games all the time. One of
the best benefits I gained from fishing
was it helped me in class in subjects like
geography and science.

325

Fishing has taken me to some places I’ve
never expected to be at. From the calm
waters of Kenyir Lake all the way to the
vast blue waters of the South China Sea.
This is why fishing helps me in class. I
have travelled to many places with my
family while searching for a nice place
to fish at.

327

As a junior angler, I think fishing has shaped me in
a positive way. With anglers from every corner of
the globe sharing their experiences and giving advice,
it drives me to do the same. Taking my friends
and cousins fishing is really fun. Seeing the smile
when they hook their first fish is the best. Fishing
also cuts off the immense pressure I feel as a student.

329

Some angling friends have even
sent some lures to me. When I grow
up I will do the same. Inspire the
next generation of anglers because
they are the future of fishing.

331

If you want to take your kid fishing,
starting off with a simple setup will
be good. The size of the catch won’t
matter when your kid hooks a fish.
Big or small, it will be a memorable
catch.

333

Teach your kids to catch and release. I know
it will hurt sometimes to see your prized
catch swimming away after you spend hours
of working hard to hook it. I felt that as a kid,
but now I understand why my dad encourages
me to practice catch and release.

335

Safety is important too. Always keep an eye
out on your kids, especially if you are taking
them on a boat-fishing trip. I’m 16 and my
dad still reminds me of safety every single
time before I head out fishing. I hope you
make a good choice for your kids. Fishing
is a positive activity and it can help in many
ways

Happenings
Coarse Fishing Malaysia Masterclass
By Tengku Izzudin

343
Calling out to all budding coarse anglers
out there!
Steve Lockett will join us again on 17th
and 24th August 2014 for an exclusive
masterclass on coarse fishing.
This is a continuation of an earlier coarse
fishing clinic in January which gathered
a huge response and being the first of its
kind in Malaysia, where Steve elaborated
on the basics of feeder, waggler and pole
fishing.

345
Lately there’s been some enthusiastic
interest in this angling style,
so we hope to continue the momentum,
as many have already discovered
that coarse fishing techniques
are really productive on our waters.
And for those who attended the first
There will be matches held on both
at our fishing. Something like a
hands-on personal coaching to finetune
our techniques. Plus it’s the
only way to ensure he doesn’t win
the match again! Steve has also
generously offered a feeder rod and
reel set as the main prize!

Tentatively, the masterclass and
matches will start at 830am and will
be held at Fish Valley, Semenyih.
