“DOGGIES IN THE WINDOW”<br />
A SUITE MAKEOVER<br />
Marc Russell Interiors and Mark DeCastro of MDC Contractors gifted the Palm<br />
Springs Animal Shelter (PSAS) with a makeover last Tuesday. The duo renovated<br />
Canine Suites One & Two, true to the unique, contemporary design Russell is<br />
known for. Modern wall coverings, bright furniture, and a dog-sized flat screen<br />
TV, give the suites and dogs, the signature Marc Russell look of “home”.<br />
DeCastro and Marc Russell Interiors said they donated the project to help the<br />
animals get adopted and to get people into the shelter, “creating a space that<br />
looks like an actual home, will hopefully inspire adopters to take home a new<br />
pet.”<br />
Board member Stephen Boyd says, “ We could not be more thrilled, the new<br />
spaces really gives our animals an opportunity to shine. The new design<br />
accentuates how easily a shelter pet can fit into your family. We are very<br />
grateful.”<br />
PSAS will host a ribbon cutting ceremony to celebrate the gift and thank the<br />
designers in the upcoming weeks. In the meantime, visitors are invited to<br />
stop by the shelter to see the new space, and perhaps adopt a “doggie in the<br />

The Possible When Art and Idea Collide<br />
ARTBar began over coffee in July 2013. Artist Eric Nash and myself<br />
had both been working on an Art Salon. We when we realized we<br />
were moving along the same path, it made sense to join forces.<br />
We envisioned a place for people interested in art to gather. The<br />
free exchange of ideas is powerful. The free exchange of ideas<br />
among creative individuals is always exciting. To bring in artists was<br />
appealing. Reggie Cameron brought BAR to the mix. Soon three<br />
minds were working together to create a “happening”. Molly and<br />
Donovan Funkey and BAR joined. The rest is great!<br />
In August 2013 we held the first ARTBar with avant-garde filmmaker,<br />
JB Ghuman. Invites were sent. Facebook event page created. Twitter<br />
tweeted. Colliding Worlds Radio chatted about it. No free wine. No<br />
free cheese. We wondered what would happen.<br />

That night 80 joined us. The discussion was lively, interesting and<br />
engaging. People saw JB’s work. People met each other. Ideas and<br />
business cards changed hands. ARTBar was born.<br />
In the past 12 months ARTBar has hosted: J.B Ghuman, Jesika<br />
VonRabbit, Terry Hastings, Danny Heller, Jaime Kowal, Kenny Irwin,<br />
Aaron Hanson, Ron Cameron, J. Everett Perry, Angelina Christina,<br />
Chad Stephens and Susanna Schulten. Each month people gathered<br />
to share the world of art. Little did we know that ARTBar would be<br />
featured on the local news, in The Desert Sun and The New York<br />
Times.<br />
What have we learned? That Art does matter. That the free<br />
exchange of artistic thought benefits artists, patrons and observers<br />
alike. That the art scene of the Coachella Valley is more than the<br />
sum of its parts.<br />
As Co-Founder Eric Nash points out, “Palm Springs is rapidly<br />
becoming a true creative and artistic center for the West Coast. Art<br />
+ cocktails is a natural here. I am amazed at the diversity and quality<br />
of talent that calls our valley home. When the Mid-century craze<br />
wanes, we will still have a vital creative and artistic community to<br />
keep Palm Springs contemporary and alive. ARTBar will continue to<br />
help pave the way by introducing the community to new and fresh<br />
talent.”<br />
“Artists and Creatives have always found social spaces to gather,<br />
share ideals, craft memories, inspire one another... we wanted to<br />
foster that space here. We are in the midst of a commercial and<br />
cultural renaissance. We are thrilled to be a part of that progress, “<br />

For me, watching ARTBar take root has been wonderful. We three<br />
believe in the power of art. It is gratifying to know that others<br />

We just came back from a very successful show, in<br />
Milwaukee WI, at the Tory Folliard Gallery. The show<br />
is titled “Summer In Wisconsin”. These images pictured are<br />
just but 2 examples of the work we displayed in this show. On our trip<br />
we were also very grateful to visit our lovely Mothers Darlene and<br />
Shirley. We sure are glad to be back in the desert though, known now<br />
as the “Valley Of The Arts”, heat and all. Also a huge shout out to<br />
Juli Ragsdale and Levvy Carriker the Publishers of <strong>LIVE</strong> Magazine<br />
for their support of the arts here. When ever we travel we are most<br />
happy when we are able to return to our beautiful home, and the Lon<br />
Michels Gallery, here in Palm Springs. This summer Lon is working<br />
on beautiful paintings of the Joshua Tree National Park and Todd is<br />
working on his pool paintings series of Palm Springs Pools. Please<br />

Last week before we left Palm Springs, we spent a lovely afternoon<br />
with Sean and Lindy. These two wonderful directors have also fallen in<br />
love with our beautiful desert. They have spent great efforts in creating<br />
a movie which truly showcases the splendor and glamour of Palm<br />
Springs.This Indy film titled “Palm Swings” should be released in the<br />
next year, and we know all of Palm Springs will be excited to see it.<br />
Our featured artist of this issue is Juan-Manual Alonso. Juan is<br />
represented at the Jorge Mendez Gallery in the lower part of the<br />
Uptown Design District. Juan is a Cuban born artist,with many<br />
beautiful stories of growing up as a young child in Cuba. Juan-<br />
Manual’s work is bold and beautiful. He paints from his heart, and<br />
his work always makes us smile. Imagine a modern day Miro with<br />
a Gaudi twist. One of the things we love about Juan, other than his<br />
fabulous long hair, is his kindness. Juan is a nice person, funny,<br />
and a pleasure to be around. We also recently spent time with him<br />
while filming “Palm Swings”, and it was his laughter, and joy at 3 am<br />
at glam, fab, Trio Restaurant that made the experience even more<br />
exciting. So please look for Juan and many other locals including us,<br />
in the upcoming full length film. It has been said that most artists look<br />
like their work, and this is true of Juan. He has an incredible flare for<br />
fashion and transforms his great style and talent from everyday life to<br />
his canvasses. If you are in the Uptown Design District be sure to see<br />
his work and many other Latin American artists as well , in the Jorge<br />
Mendez Gallery. This man stands 6’ 3” tall and his heart is as big as he<br />
is. He is an incredible addition to the “Valley Of The Arts” and we are<br />

In closing an unusual phenomenon was experienced in the desert this<br />
past week. Residents describe strange liquid in droplet form falling<br />
from the sky. Scientists and researchers were baffled, even claiming<br />
it could be excretions from extra terrestrials. There were also loud<br />
bursts of thundering noises and bright white lights, zooming across the<br />
sky. Thank the heavens that our lovely friend Bianca Rae, CBS Local<br />
2 Anchor and Eye On the Desert entertainment reporter, informed us<br />
that these droplets were something unfamiliar to us here in the desert,<br />
are called rain. Keep the prayers coming for more rain, this will give<br />
us a beautiful desert in bloom, and water for all of God’s creations big<br />
and small to thrive and enjoy. Stay cool and hydrated we are past the<br />
hump of heat of dog days of summer.<br />

four-part harmony when the San Diego Chorus of Sweet Adelines<br />
International presents its “3rd Soledad Presbyterian Church on<br />
Saturday, September 13, <strong>2014</strong>. The reception starts at 6pm and the<br />
performance begins at 7pm.<br />
This entertaining, high-energy song and dance production includes<br />
songs performed by the fifth ranked Sweet Adelines chorus in the<br />
world! Audience members will be treated to the chorus performing<br />
favorites performed by the group at international competition last year<br />
as well as some numbers from the chorus’s fall 2015 international<br />
competition show package.<br />
“This performance offers something for everyone even if you aren’t a<br />
wine drinker,” said Director of San Diego Chorus Kim Vaughn. “First,<br />
the location atop Mount Soledad offers breathtaking San Diego views<br />
which guests can enjoy during the indoor-outdoor reception.”<br />
"3rd Annual Wine, Women and Song” offers not only phenomenal<br />
San Diego views, great bites, drinks and an exciting silent auction,<br />
attendees will also enjoy live music performed by over 70 attractive<br />
and talented women of all ages and witness rhythm, dancing and<br />
harmony come together on stage! Some of the featured musical<br />

Cityfest turns 30!<br />
Save the date and meet us under the Hillcrest sign on 5th and<br />
University for Hillcrest’s beloved street fair -- August 10, <strong>2014</strong>.<br />
It all began 30 years ago in the summer of 1984 when the Hillcrest<br />
community gathered on University and Fifth to celebrate<br />
the relighting of the Hillcrest sign for the first ever Cityfest.<br />
Today Hillcrest Cityfest is a huge celebration of community<br />
spirit through music, arts, crafts, and food. This event attracts<br />
150,000+ attendees each year from across the west coast.<br />

THOUSANDS CELEBRATE AS SAN DIEGO<br />
GAY PRIDE PROUDLY MARKS 40 YEARS:<br />
This year marked the 40th year of Pride in San Diego. Many remember how<br />
it all started and we have three Pioneers to thank for what we have today:<br />
Nicole Muarry Ramirez, Homann, and Jessop. It was not an easy task for<br />
them back in the early 70's. The city would not issue a permit to march,<br />
but these trailblazers, along with about 200 gay and lesbian San Diegans,<br />
marched down Broadway without a permit. Four decades later, here we<br />
stand, San Diego's popular Pride celebration that attracts approximately<br />
300,000 spectators. They say a picture is worth a thousands words so here<br />
are some from this year's Pride. Our San Diego LGBT Pride Center is already<br />
hard at work on 2015 happening in less then 350 days. See you all back here<br />
in July under the Pride flag-- our true colors.<br />

On the first day of school children are excited about going back to school and<br />
seeing their friends. They may forget about caution and safety. We all need<br />
to remember to stay focused and watch for them out on the road! Let's all<br />
drive safely...<br />
Many organizations are having their backpack and school supply events<br />
helping children of all cultures go back to school with confidence and PRIDE.<br />
I'm happy to say that TIGERS PICTIONARY event is just one of the events to<br />
kick off the Back to School effort, with me and my faculty. TIGER has teamed<br />
up with this worth while cause. Join us all at #1 on Fifth Avenue, at 3845<br />
Fifth Ave, in the heart of Hillcrest on August 13th, <strong>2014</strong>, 7:30 pm. Backpacks<br />
and school supplies will be collected that evening and the donations of<br />
Pictionary will benefit Family Matters, at the San Diego LGBT Center. Always<br />
remember, Tiger's Pictionary is every Wednesday night at #1 on Fifth.<br />
Tiger and her cubs are always giving back to this wonderful community. It<br />

DEL MAR RACE TRACK:<br />
Summer Racing at Del Mar is Thursday, July 17th through Wednesday<br />
September 3, <strong>2014</strong>. Opening day was well attended with Hats Hats and more<br />
Hats! Located at Del Mar Fairgrounds, <strong>22</strong>60 Jimmy Durante Boulevard, Del<br />
Mar, Ca. 9<strong>2014</strong>. If you're into the thoroughbred racing scene, this is the place<br />
to be. However, the Turf is not just for horses! For those who also enjoy<br />
wiener dog racing as much as horse racing, the Del Mar track will also host<br />
the Wienerschnitzel Wiener Dog Nationals on Aug 30th. The sixteen fastest<br />
pups will compete for the title of Top Dog in San Diego County. The winner<br />
advances to the National Finals. Just an FYI, the Del Mar track opened 77<br />
years ago on July 3, 1937. On Aug. 12, 1938, the track was put on the map<br />
with Seabiscuit’s historic win of a match race.<br />
