More Than Music with
Jerome Godboo
Anyone who has seen Jerome Godboo’s live
performance surely has an indelible image of
the experience in their mind. The signature lowslung
leather belt of harmonica’s, mischievous
grin and high energy performances. Yet, there
is a tenderness and vulnerability as well. Since
fronting the 1980’s blues rock band, The Phantoms,
Jerome continues his personal journey of musical
and spiritual growth. Here, in the new millennium,
with his newest recording “Rooting Out My
Devils” he remains true to that path.
“Anything you want to get good at involves
hard work. For me, that work is meditation.
To become more compassionate you have to
notice how uncompassionate you are at times.
Meditating helps me to get to know myself so I
can trust my motives.” Jerome said. “When I’m
doing business it’s healthy to be aware of the
subtext of why I do things.”
Jerome’s interest in meditation began when he
was 12 years of age while watching the TV series,
Kung Fu. He noticed, through the characters,
how the practice of meditation was able to bring
calm and kindness into meeting the challenges of
everyday life.
“After I had my first child I was still acting
pretty rock’n roll and while with my band One
Monkey, I came across a pamphlet on Vipassana
Meditation and felt this was it! It's been a dozen
years that I attend annual 10 day silent retreats.
There is no communication or eye contact with
other students while you’re on a course. This
makes it easier to observe your physical sensations
while maintaining equanimity of mind and
utilizing those tools to transform negativity.”
Through his daily meditation practice Jerome’s
music has been enhanced as he claims that
previously unconscious attitudes and beliefs come
to the surface daily.
“It’s helped me to get over myself. The blues
travel through me. I appreciate my bands and the
possibilities the music provides. I’m grateful to
have been shown a good path, that with effort,
will bring understanding into my life and more
harmony with those around me. Metta.” *
* With loving kindness.
Monkey
Junk
On June 21, Ottawa’s MonkeyJunk released
their sophomore CD, To Behold, the first in a
three-record deal with their new label, Stony Plain
Records and a follow-up to their successful debut
Tiger in Your Tank (released independently, then
on Vizztone).
Not your usual blues ‘power trio’, MonkeyJunk
has accomplished much in three years. But like all
blues ‘overnight sensations’, there’s lots of history
and slogging it out in the trenches behind their
success. Their combined experience (almost 60
years) and their long-term friendship contributes
to the chemistry that merges Tony D’s guitar
virtuosity, Matt Sobb’s solid drumbeat (and
assorted other percussion) with Steve Marriner’s
passionate vocals, his award-winning harmonica
and his skill on a host of other instruments,
including baritone guitar, guitar and keyboards.
And there’s no bass!
They’re always asked where the name came
from. Their response: “A chance remark Son
House made. ‘I’m talkin’ ‘bout the blues. I ain’t
talkin’ about monkey junk,’ he said. We love Mr.
House, and we get his point, but the word stuck
with us. And we use it as one word: MonkeyJunk,
with a capital J in the middle.”
Less than a year after their Sunday evening
gigs at Ottawa’s Irene’s Pub evolved into a band,
they were on the “Road to Memphis” as the
Ottawa Blues Society’s representative at the 2009
International Blues Challenge, where they placed
third out of nearly 100 bands! In the fall of 2009,
they became one of a handful of Canadians to be
nominated for a Blues Music Award. In January
2010, they were nominated for six MapleBlues
Awards and won five, and they followed up
with a Best Blues Artist award at the Canadian
Independent Music Awards in March of that year.
Their winning ways continued in May when Blues
Foundation member/voters made them the 2 nd
Canadian band ever to win a Blues Music Award
– MonkeyJunk’s “Tiger In Your Tank” was voted
Best New Artist Debut. And they started 2011 off
with three more MapleBlues Awards.
They call their music “Swamp R&B. Soul
boogie. Deep blues … and bedroom funk.” What
does it sound like? A beat that won’t let you sit
still, melodic harmonica, eloquent guitar solos
alternating with tasty rhythm, keyboards for a
change of pace … the closest you come to bass is
the baritone guitar. And what does it look like?
A full dance floor!
While “To Behold” is more eclectic than the
cont’d on page 7
Congratulations to the 2011
TBS Talent Search Finalists
The Distillery • Nicole Christian • Bradleyboy Mac Arthur •
Richard Henderson • Fraser Melvin Blues Band • Ken Yoshioka
The six finalists, (clockwise, The Distillery, Nicole Christian, Bradleyboy Mac Arthur, Richard Henderson,
Fraser Melvin Blues Band and Ken Yoshioka) will perform before a panel of judges at Nathan Phillips Square
on Thursday August 18, noon-2pm during City of Toronto’s “Tasty Thursdays” series.
The Distillery is a hot young blues trio that
can appear to be deceptively mellow at times.
Please don’t relax too much as Neil, Myrrhine and
Jordan bring out the sabre tooth tiger when you
least expect it. Check out their intoxicating brand
of original blues based on real life experiences
that we all share. “What You Told Me” is the first
in an exciting series of blues recordings by The
Distillery and is being released at The Gladstone
Hotel on Thurs July 28.
For the past several years Nicole Christian has
performed and produced music events in Toronto
at venues such as Hugh’s Room, The Silver Dollar
and The Supermarket, Grafitti's and The Black
Swan. Nicole has recently been featured in The
Toronto Star, as well as on Newstalk 1010 and
CBC Radio, where she has played her song “Barn
Dance” (co-written with Stephen King) live on air.
Nicole recently played a North American tour with
Hamilton guitar player Alfie Smith. Run Rabbit
Run was just voted The Best Debut Roots and
Blues Album of 2010 award by the Underground
Blues Network.
In 2004, after playing in bands for the better
part of 25 years, Bradleyboy MacArthur started
doing things his own way. He’s been developing
his one-man band approach while mixing blues,
bluegrass, rockabilly, and punk at his home studio,
the Red Room, in Orono, Ontario. MacArthur’s
new album, Salt Gun, was released on June 7th.
Richard Henderson was named
Instrumentalist of the Year for 2010 at the
Durham Region Music Awards and was invited
to showcase at the 2011 Blues Summit in Toronto.
As a journeyman of Toronto’s dynamic bar scene,
Richard has developed a characteristic edgy style
based on the uncompromising essence of the blues
and other elemental roots music.
The Fraser Melvin Blues Band was formed
in 2003 by friends Fraser Melvin (Guitar &
Vocals) and Alex Furlott (Bass). With a revolving
door of other musicians, the current lineup consists
of Jon Hyde (Drums), Josh Cavan (Keys), and
Andrew Moljgun (Saxes). All enrolled in Humber
College's music program, this quintet plays a
mixture of music, fusing blues, jazz, and soul.
The Fraser Melvin Blues Band is an exciting and
entertaining band - definitely one to keep your
ears open for.
Originally from Kamakura,Japan. Ken
Yoshioka came to Toronto in 1994. He started
to go to blues jams at bars such as Chicago's,
Gladstone Hotel, Silver Dollar's, Grossman's
where he picked up lots of musical skills and
experiences thanks to the mid 90's live music
resurgence in Toronto. He has been giging and
recording with Julian Fauth, Jay Clark & The
Jones, Mike O'Grady, Bo Basiuk, Billy Heffernan
ansd was also the subject of a documentary called
"Harmonica Man From Japan" by a Japanese
Director Eiko Watanabe. Ken recently did 9
shows in Tokyo and Kanagawa gaining lots of
nation al press
The winner will recieve a professional
development package that includes a showcase
opportunity at the Blues Summit Six in January
2013, a showcase opportunity at this year’s South
Side Shuffle Festival, a photo shoot with Bill King,
mentoring sessions with industry professionals,
band’s debut, it focuses on original material with
themes ranging from the traditional – love sought,
found and lost – to a call for social responsibility
in ‘Mother’s Cry’, and the finale is a five-minute
harmonica-driven instrumental, aptly titled ‘The
On The Side with...
Vince Maccarone
Hailing from the mining town of Sudbury,
Ontario, drummer / percussionist Vince
Maccarone, has been holding down the beat for
three years with the Juno nominated, Johnny Max
Band. Most recently, the band was recognized as
winner of the International Songwriting Contest
for blues song of the year titled, “Daddy’s Little
Girl.”
Vince’s early musical influences were, by
chance, all the records his siblings left behind
when they left home.
“I always knew I wanted to be a professional
drummer. I began listening mostly to classic rock
and blues. John Bonham of Led Zeppelin was
a prominent influence. Playing the hi-hat on all
the up beats and swinging the bass drum is from
him. I played along with rock bands such as ZZ
Top Genesis and Deep Purple and later Howlin’
Wolf and other blues artists. A South African friend
introduced me to Bob Marley and that turned my
musical paradigm upside down and began my
interest in World Music.”
In fact, Vince is best known for his unique
“world music” approach and is well versed in
all styles of music including Jazz and Caribbean.
His live performances display an unbreakable
link between traditional music and cutting edge
contemporary.
His first band, Black Cat Bone was with
Dennis Gaumond from Guelph, then came Hot
Tamales Band from Toronto which played New
Orleans / Zydeco Funk. In 1994, Vince became
drummer for The Sidemen fronted by Paul
Reddick. This is when his touring experience
began with The Sidemen traversing Canada from
coast to coast.
He has received many Maple Blues
nominations for Drummer of the Year and was
part of The Sidemen when, in 2001, they received
Maple Blues Awards for Electric Act of the Year
and Recording of the Year for “Rattlebag.”
MACCARONE cont’d from p 7
Throughout the years, Vince has shared the
stage backing up artists such as BB King,
Buddy Guy, Koko Taylor, Junior Wells,
Joe Louis Walker, James Cotton and has
played festivals throughout North America
and Europe.
It was during his tenure with The
Sidemen that Vince became a barefoot
drummer and has been so for more than a
decade.
“When we were playing outdoor festivals
it felt like the right thing to do and as it turns
out, I’m more connected to the drums.”
He is a sought after musician on both
drum set and hand percussion and conducts
master classes and workshops with his
company Rhythm Works, which focuses on
corporate team building.
“The idea came from California in the
1990’s when drum circles became popular.
I decided to start workshops in Toronto. We
use drumming as a metaphor for listening,
communicating and working well together
and after the workshops people then
transfer those skills back into their work
environment.”
Vince’s, 2Music Company focuses on
original compositions for television, film
and web. His drumming and compositions
have been featured on many commercials,
television shows and corporate videos for
Canadian Fortune 500 companies.
He is currently earning a four year
combined York University / Humber College
under-graduate music degree. During this
time he arranged and composed music for
his first concert, “Los Variants”, highlighting
his love of world music with some of his
favourite musicians from Toronto. You can
see an excerpt of this concert on his website
vincemaccarone.com Further to this, he
is planning to obtain a Master’s degree in
Ethnomusicology.
For now, school is out and Vince
Maccarone has a lot to look forward to
with this summer’s festivals.
“I’m looking forward to a summer of
playing with really great artists,” he said.
“The Johnny Max Bigger Band has a variety
of festivals this summer and in the Fall, we
will be traveling to France and Denmark. In
July, I’ll be working with Jerome Godboo
in Mt. Tremblant and then on August 20th
with Chris Whiteley and Diana Braithwaite
in New York City at the Hudson River Blues
Festival !”
That’s quite a feat for those bare feet,
and another lovely ballad on a disc full of good
songs. “The Marrinator” is a harp instrumental that
ends the program in fine fashion and I especially
like the title – puns that work on several levels are
hard to come by. Marriner takes all the lead vocals
and he has never sounded better. That’s not to take
is still working its magic. The official launch was
provided the inspiration for the concluding Procol
Harum song “Whiskey Train”, a tour de force of
Gogo soloing some of which uses his Soul-Bender
FX pedal. The fact that he decided to use that as
the album’s title gives you an indication of how
dominant his guitar playing is these days. As you
can gather from these songs, his reach is far more
broad than most but the blues thread is the glue that
makes it work. Look for him on tour with Johnny
Winter in August.
MonkeyJunk To Behold Stony Plain/
Warner
A more meteoric rise for a new band would
be hard to imagine. The buzz had already been
building but after their third place finish at the
International Blues Challenge in Memphis in
2009, things got much hotter. Winning five Maple
Blues Awards in 2010, fueled by their first CD
and enthusiastic fan support, took everyone by
surprise. Their shows at festivals across Canada
& Europe proved to many more that this trio had
the chemistry & the talent and they took home
three more MBAs in January. What to do for the
follow up album? Well, Steve Marriner, Tony
D & Matt Sobb headed for a quiet, rural studio
outside home base Ottawa with some new songs
and some 60 years of combined experience. They
open flat out, with a scorching lament for the dead
in natural and man-made disasters, “…from New
Orleans to Iraq”. It’s called “Mother’s Crying” and
a more effective lament would be hard to imagine.
It starts out acoustically but these three players
soon show how much sound they can put out.
Most of the disc is contemporary electric blues
but they do show their love of more traditional
sounds with a stunning acoustic version of Hank
Williams’ “You’re Gonna Change (Or I’m Gonna
Leave)”. The heavy rocker “Right Now” brings
the electricity back up before some soul blues
takes over. “Let Her Down” is a B3-based slow
blues on a not-unusual topic but as in other songs
here, imaginative & honest lyrics make all the
difference. Most of the songs here are credited
to all three but “With These Hands” is credited
to Marriner alone and it’s a straight soul effort,
complete with chorus. “You Don’t Know” rocks
out with a vengeance, a diatribe directed at an
unnamed person, with some fine harp & guitar.
“While You Are Mine” seems to be a fine ballad
but the song is actually an ultimatum: don’t even
try to change me – the third of three on this theme.
Fine song, though. “Running In The Rain” is
David Gogo Soul-Bender Cordova Bay/
Universal
Already in stores is album number twelve
for Nanaimo’s favourite son. Soul-Bender has
some new originals and some surprising covers
that show an artist continuing to find new side
roads on his journey with the blues. A visit with
Johnny Winter led him to record an actual slide
guitar song, Elmore James’ “Please Find My
Baby” and it makes for a roaring disc opener. The
ubiquitous Steve Marriner adds harp & piano.
“Slow It Down” goes back to the early days of
power trios like Cream & Jimi Hendrix, a Gogo
guitar showcase. “Was It Love” is by Wickham
Porteous and puts some Little Walter & Slim
Harpo licks into a Southern Gospel blender. A
lovely minor key blues follows that reflects on
his getting older and it’s not the only time here.
“Time Is Killing Me” has a most effective guitar
solo over Fender Rhodes and real strings. He
writes that he most often plays Lonnie Mack’s
version of “I Found A Love” but decided here
to go back to the Wilson Pickett original & its
wonderful Robert Ward tremolo guitar part.
The song gets every bit of the impassioned vocal
it calls for. “The Changeling” is a Doors song,
from L.A. Woman, reminding everyone how
much of their sound was based in blues. “Gettin’
Old” is an original that takes on that subject with
bit of humour and a rocking good tune. Michael
Jackson’s “The Way You Make Me Feel” gets
a blues treatment - if Mel Brown can do “Billie
Kenny “Blues Boss” Wayne An Old Rock
On A Roll Stony Plain/Warner
After three recent albums for Electro-Fi, all
three making the final 5 for the Blues JUNO
and Let It Loose a winner, Kenny “Blues Boss”
Wayne heads for Stony Plain and a match up
with a backing band that is a ‘no-brainer’. Duke
Robillard plays in a wide variety of styles but
his heart has always been in the R&B of the late
‘40’s & early ‘50’s. Wayne’s roots are simply of
a narrower focus: the music of Amos Milburn,
a slightly lesser known star of that era. Milburn
was a rollicking boogie piano player who scored
hits with songs that extolled the pleasures of
drinking. He played other kinds of songs as
well but those were the hits. And Kenny plays
those too or rather, variations on those. The
songs here are all original but songs like “Wild
Turkey 101 Proof” and “Rocking Boogie Party”
have obvious antecedents. Wayne does other
styles as well, the title song for instance is a
much more contemporary one about aging and
a statement of purpose: that he isn’t about to
stop performing. Another highlight is “Heaven,
Send Me An Angel”, in it he asks for a special
woman who will help end his troubles, and his
drinking – an excellent composition. Most of the
time, though, we associate Kenny with rocking,
good time piano and this we get lots of here.
Wayne has been nominated for the prestigious
Living Blues magazine’s Most Outstanding
Musician (Keyboard) Award and it’s obvious
in listening here why. With Duke & his band on
(on Radio 2 Saturday at 6:00pm),
Bill Bourne & The Free Radio Band
Bluesland True North/Linus/Universal
Bill Bourne is a veteran Edmonton roots
musician & a founding member of the supergroup
Tri-Continental, along with Madagascar Slim
& Lester Quitzau. Bourne’s Bluesland is a
big tent, with room for lots of styles. The Free
Radio Band includes son Pat on lead guitar
and daughter Emily who painted the original
artwork; Pa Jo, from African Guitar Summit
is on guitar, Moses Gregg, from The Swiftys on
bass and Miguel Ferrer, from Santiago, Chile,
on drums. You can tell from that line up that this
might not be your average blues album. Bourne
kicks in most of the songs on his acoustic guitar
and the full electric band soon joins in. It has that
first take, ‘live off the floor’ feel. “Daily Bread”
heads the list of highlights, a one-chord plea for
justice and freedom, a request to be allowed to
simply provide for his family. The opening “Deep
Dark Woods” and “Forever Truly Bound” bring
to mind the music of Bob Dylan and, indeed, the
CD concludes with a country blues of “Maggie’s
Farm”. “Forever Truly Bound” especially blends
old time country & electric blues in a way that
segues beautifully with Jimmy Davis’ “Columbus
Stockade Blues”. Since his recording debut in
1982, Bourne has assimilated folk music from
around the world. That experience shines through
in these eight songs. Mr. Bourne has assembled
an excellent band and I think you’ll enjoy his
journey through Bluesland. He was just here as
a solo performer but looks to be back with the
Free Radio Band in the fall. Until then, this disc
will do just fine. Check out the web site, www.
Various Artists Chicago Blues: A Living
History-The (R)evolution Continues Raisin’
Music
These double disc sets are the handiwork
of helmsman Larry Skoller, whose brother,
harpman Matthew you may know better and
who also plays in the band. Volume One was
nominated for a Grammy Award and two Blues
Music Awards – not a normal occurrence for a
European production. It became a natural choice
for last year’s Chicago Blues Festival and the
evening’s show began with a reception hosted by
the town of Aulnay-sous-Bois in France whose
Festival was the site of its first performances and
where the record company makes its home. The
recording sessions for Volume Two began the
next week. Added to the stellar line up of that
first set were Buddy Guy, Zora Young, James
Cotton & Magic Slim. As before, the purpose
was to provide an overview of ‘40’s, ‘50’s &
‘60’s blues in Chicago by re-creating those styles
with active players who learned from the masters
and who had no interest in simply copying them.
Billy Boy Arnold, John Primer, Billy Branch
& Lurrie Bell continue in their roles as curators
of the blues legends in this living museum and
two of the guests get to re-create their own songs:
Buddy Guy recorded “First Time I Met The
Blues” for Chess in 1960. He has not forgotten
it, but it is a lot longer, a patented dynamic solo is
faded at six minutes. James Cotton was there for
that seminal recording of “Rocket 88” in 1951 and
he & Branch share harmonica solos with Branch
taking the Jackie Brenston vocal – a rousing
performance. Sunnyland Slim did not make the
list last time but his student, Zora Young, re-visits
“Be Careful How You Vote” in fine fashion.
Johnny Iguana is back and does Sunnyland
proud on the 88s. Magic Slim is re-united with
John Primer for Chuck Willis’ “Keep A Drivin’” –
vintage Slim. Ronnie Baker Brooks pays tribute
to his father with a new version of “Don’t Take
Advantage Of Me”. If you love Chicago blues,
you will love this set. If you don’t already have
the first one, get that too. The web site is www.
